In the story Oedipus the King, the main character Oedipus, is given away by his parents because of the bad prophecies that were given by the oracles. In the story Oedipus takes the kingdom of Thebes after he solves the Sphinx's riddle. Throughout Oedipus's rule, he is in constant search of his parents and who they are. Oedipus will stop at nothing to find out who his parents are even if it ruins his life. The purpose of this essay is to discuss the "blindness and sight", that the author Sophocles has put in this story through his characters.

About halfway through the story Oedipus sends messengers out to get a person who supposedly can see the visions of Apollo. When Theresias comes in, Oedipus is taken aback by that fact that Theresias is physically blinded. However the chorus says that he is still wise, and sees the visions of Apollo. Oedipus becomes very angry at Theresias after he starts accusing Oedipus of killing King Laius. Oedipus then remarks back at him and says that Theresias is not only blind in the eyes but in the mind and ears as well.

Oedipus is determined to find who his parents are, despite the advice from everyone, the chorus, Queen Jocasta, and Theresias. Oedipus's tragic flaw, is the fact that he is ignorant and very pompous. He doesn't believe anything that he hears, and thinks that nothing can go wrong. He's the King of Thebes, he saved the city from the Sphinx hoe can anything go wrong. In these ways does it make Oedipus blind. He is completely oblivious that he actually killed his own father at the crossroads and that he did in fact marry Queen Jocasta whose his mother/wife.

Sophocles uses symbolism in Oedipus the Ling. Whereas the blindness as we know it someone cannot physically see, with Oedipus it means that he is mentally blind. The only time where Oedipus is physically blind is when he gouges out his own eyes after he sees Queen Jocasta dead, and after he finally realizes that he killed his father and marry his mother. The whole time through the story, he had to keep going no matter what anyone said, and when he got close to knowing and more and more people were telling him to stop, he wouldn't. Theresias on the other hand was blind he could not see the people in front of him, yet he could see the things that Oedipus could not. Theresias could se Apollo's visions, and he knew the whole time that Oedipus was the killer of Laius. He tried to warn Oedipus that it would cause him misery, and that's what Theresias saw, he saw what it would do to Oedipus if he found out who his parents were.

In this essay I have discussed the symbolism of "blindness and sight" of Theresias and Oedipus. By reading this essay you the reader should be able recognize that theres not only one form of blindness, people can be blinded by many facts of like that they don't want to hear. People can block out the reality and making there own stuff up, this is a form of blindness. This causes the downfall of our character Oedipus, when he doensn't realize what the consequences will be of finding his parents. Eventually Oedipus becomes physically blind because of his mental blindness. Oedipus must now come to grips with reality, and deal with his new self-inflicted handicap.

"The Goal" by Dr. Eliyahu Goldratt and Jeff Cox analyzes the problems that go on in operations management. In specific, it discusses a number of problems such as decrease in cash flows, production, high work volumes, high inventory, lack of adequate materials, late orders, no efficiencies, and under staff. The company discussed is Unico, a manufacturing plant, one of three in the UselessWare Division. Unico is faces with Alex Rogo is the newly employed manager who has been given three months to turn this company around.

Eliyahu M. Goldratt and Jeff Cox devised the Theory of Constraints, further popularizing their assumptions through real-world embellishments in their business novel The Goal nearly 0 years ago. I've suspected for some time that theory and reality application, if you will is best met in fusible form by such an approach. To this end, I suspect they have achieved somewhat of a wonder. It appears as if the primary contention is the "transferability" of not only the "theory of constraints" but also the novel's key drivers ThroughputèInventoryèOperating Expense to a point where they can be applied toward the "goal" of a company's profitability, specifically, mine. In a reference text, I try to select out concepts and put them in summary form; however, with something that is narrative, such things as characterizations and comments can qualify an understanding of any writing. It was apparent that the characters of Alex and Jonah defined the environment of another failing company (Uniware) by having assigned roles whose tenants were novelty and inquiry, respectively.

Imagine that you are sitting in a room, not knowing what to expect or even if to expect anything at all. It is dark and there is a mystical smoke visible in the air around you. All that you know is what you can deduct by the atmosphere that is around you. You are sitting in a seat on the isle in the second row. Around you see scattered bodies occupying seats sporadically behind you, as well as completely in the row in front of you. Straight ahead of you is a flat black stage with an aurous fog misting within close proximity. To the right of you is a rather impromptu lobby that people enter and exchange a ticket for a program. Behind, glowing in a soft hue of crimson is a backdrop. Above you are randomly scattered white lights that light up solitude bodies amongst the crowd. Looking around you see that they are a majority female. Come to think of it you can gather up all the gentlemen and count them upon one hand. Looking back amongst the mass of occupants you gather that it is about half African American in decent. The other half is mixed amongst various nationalities. The majority was around college age with a few who were reaching upon their later years. They are briefly talking to one another and then returning to solitude. All of the sudden there is a change in music from a casual beat to an obvious culturally entranced beat. Two heads pop in and out from behind different curtains on the stage. Within minutes they are dancing around and interacting with the crowd. One of them came up and toyed with me a little by gesturing me to reach in her bag. She pulled back a couple of times and then reached in herself and grabbed some candy and gave it to me. What a way to get your attention quickly.

I an over all summery I absolutely loved this production because it was a random set of lively dancing with a solemn cultural glimpse. S/BAD was an awesome performing company and given the chance I would attend it again. Although the Dance Space Theater in the CSUS campus gave a distinctive and different approach to the concert, it's lack of a separated lobby detracted from the center of attention upon the stage. However, the company and their indulging styles of dance covered up this distraction.

The first act took a jazz approach with two dancers that didn't seem to have a set dance, but rather attended to the audience and brought their attention into the piece. It took the solemn setting of the environment and broke it into a fun and enlightening little spark of life. Each dancer went off and did their own personal little routine to a common rhythm. This was rather pleasing because it showed a variable of different moves that could be done in one style of dance.

The second act took on a solemn approach. Its style escapes me because I do not have a base of knowledge to tell the differences between each style of dance. I know that its slow movements showed power and solitude. I liked this performance because it was one person's struggles in life. It seemed to show how life could twist you and contort the body into uncomfortable and unpleasing positions. The dancer seemed to tell the audience that they needed to take time to come back to their original positions and center themselves again, before they let life contort them into another difficult position.

From this came a change to a man and a woman in their pursuit of life together. It was appealing to see because it showed a couple entranced in themselves and making every movement smoothly glide with each other's motions. This style complemented the previous one because it had those solemn movements but them gave the idea of a calm chase to hold love in close proximity to the body.

The following act had a sort of Broadway hint to the music. What I liked about it was that the dancers made the music attain to the needs of their cultural dance. They did not take their own style of dance and try to put it into the confines of a typical old-fashioned Broadway production. They did it with heart and enthusiasm in their own cultural roots. There were about five dancers that played the stage and set a lively direction to the stage right before intermission.

After the intermission the stage took life with three different groups dancing in a jazz style to one set of music simultaneously. One group seemed to have a soft style of rhythmatic dance. The second seemed to have a livelier version of the same dance style. And the third style was purely cultural. This was the best style to watch. The first style, although in sync with the act, did not seem to belong with the other two more lively styles. It did however show a mixture of dance styles that without it probably would have looked like a battle between the two remaining styles for the attention of the audience.

The next act seemed to be a demonstration of smooth continuous arts of cultural self-defense. Each group seemed to be followed by a hunter of sorts, which was rather appealing to see that these two different actions were intermingled together to tell a story about a chase and how to elude the hunter. The ending that occurred with the hunted being on stage for a prolonged amount of time performing finished off the number on a rather excitable note. The final solemn hunter crossing the stage showed the hunter that it was over and that the hunted seemed to be escaping from the grasps of the hunter.

The final act started with one vocalist with five performers around her. She sang elegantly through the plight of the African American and then proceeded through to the uplifting of the community to an even playing field. I think that the five performers detracted from this part because they took the attention away from the vocalist. The act then proceeded on to a lively dancing finale that pursued some cultural dancing and ended on a pleasing note.

Overall this performance was one that was memorable and entertaining. I will be coming to view the productions next year of S/BAD. Their cultural show of diversity enthralled the audience while making it known that they were in fact teaching us about a culture that they belong to. An awesome production and one that I am glad that I did not miss

The Best Way to Live

In high school I made some friends who will forever be in my life. I believe that it

is quite hard for one to live without friends. Therefore, the best way to live is to grow

and spend time with those special individuals. Friends are always there for each other, in

sadness and in joy.

I often think about how important my close friends are to me. It is not until

college though that I truly appreciate the blessing of having friends, because when they

are not there, I feel like there is no one to turn to. Friends are great to have in times of

joy. Who is better to share memorable times with than with friends? I would have to say

no one. For example, I went to Six Flags Great Adventure this past summer with about

ten of my closest friends. Just sitting next to Cam or Doug or Pete on the Scream

Machine is an amazing time. If I were to be next to a stranger I do not think the ride

would be such a "scream."

Although I would like to think that all my time spent with my friends is joyous, it

is not. This past winter a close friend of mine named Scott A. Sloane died in a tragic car

accident on the way to school one wet morning. Although this incident was absolutely

devastating, somehow my friends made the best of the situation. I never before had cried

in another man's shoulder before that day. And what better a shoulder to cry on than a

friend who loves me. It seems as though a friend who has passed away brought the rest of

My friends have always been there for me, whether a joyous or sad time. And I

truly have spent the memorable moments of my life with them. Living with friends is not only the best way but the only way to live.

Classical Management theorists

The advent of mass production, in the period during and following the Industrial Revolution in Europe and the United States, brought novel approaches and ideas as to how organisations were best managed.

The Classical School of management is thought to have originated around the turn of the century and dominated management thinking into the 10s. It focused on the efficiency of the particular work process, and has been divided into three schools of thought. These include Bureaucratic management that focuses on rules and procedures, Scientific management which concentrates on the 'best' way in which a job can be done and Administrative management which has emphasised the need for the flow of information within the organisation.

Classical theorists considered workers and their needs as being secondary to the needs of the organisation and hence it has become an outdated form of management. Despite being outdated classical management theory remains of interest as it introduced management as a subject for analysis and provided ideas for the future development of management theory.

In this analysis Bureaucratic, Scientific and Administrative management theory will be evaluated and their contribution to our understanding of today's organisations discussed.

· Bureaucratic Management

Max Weber (1864-10) was a German sociologist who first used the word bureaucracy to describe a particular form of management structure. He proposed a structure that was to provide maximal efficiency and stability. The six key elements of this were

1. A hierarchical structure that has a clear chain of command with the higher positions having control over the lower positions. (Hierarchy)

. Each employee was to have the expertise to complete a particular task. Labour available was divided and there was specialisation of skills. (Division of Labour)

. All decisions and situations that could arise were to be governed by a complete and binding set of rules. (Formalisation)

4. The relationships between management and employees were to be impersonal. (Impersonality)

5. The recruitment and selection process was to be based around the applicants' technical competence for the particular job or task he is to perform. (Selection)

6. Managers were to be viewed as having professional careers rather than being just owners in the company. (Career Orientation)

Bureaucracy became the accepted form of management structure in large public organisations, many semi state bodies and the civil service. The hierarchical structure allowed the development of a chain of command. The idea of a management career meant that the company gained continuity, efficiency was increased by the strict rules applied, a formal selection process gave recognition to merit and the division of labour also increased efficiency as expertise increase with repetition.

Disadvantages of this model include the lack of flexibility that it is able to tolerate. This clearly discourages individual initiative and innovation. The rigid rules and procedures make the organisation inflexible and slow to respond to changes in market forces. An emphasis on impersonal relations within an organisation leads to discontentment in a workforce and a policy of strict division of labour leads to a unmotivated and bored workforce. Overemphasis on rules and procedures may be made so important that the underlying objectives of the organisation may become secondary to the strict adherence to procedure.

In today's world the remnants of bureaucratic structure remains in many organisations. This is a reflection of the strength of Weber's suggestions. It remains of particular relevance to organisations that operate in particularly stable and secure environments, where change occurs infrequently and flexibility is less important than structure.

· Scientific Management

The father of scientific management theory is Frederick Taylor (1856-117). The theory of scientific management is concerned with the development of one best way to perform a task through the application of a scientific method. Taylor felt that management should ensure maximum prosperity for employer that should be coupled with the prosperity of the employee. Jobs were to be well designed so that each employee had a well-defined and controlled task, for which he was to follow specific procedures and methods. Prosperity was to be achieved through the scientific analysis of the one best method of performing a task to ensure that each employee was operating at his highest level.

Analysis of a workers task was shown to maximise output and benefit both organisation and individual employee during his work with the Bethlehem Steel Works Company. Here through the introduction of piece-rate pay system and scientific analysis of the tasks performed he showed that both productivity and workers salaries could be improved in a mutually beneficial manner.

His work developed four principles of scientific management

1. Development of a true science of work.

Unofficial rules and assumptions regarding a task should be replaced with a scientific approach. This was to be a scientific assessment of tasks to be performed by employees and breaking them down into their specific components to determine the best way to perform them. Clarity would be provided to the employee of what the expectations of the job were and he would be paid a fair wage for his work. An employee could expect an improved wage for his work, however if he under performed he would lose income.

. Scientific selection and development of workers.

The best person to perform the task would be selected by managers and they were to ensure that the best training was given. Utilising a piece to rate system of pay, both workers and managers would be rewarded by increased productivity.

. Co-operation of management and workers.

Taylor advised co-operation between managers and their workers. He felt that this would ensure that the best person for a job did it using the best available methodology.

4. Division of work.

The worker was to be responsible only for the performance of the task in hand. Responsibility for the method was to lie with the manager. Managers were to direct operations and assign tasks and the workers were to simply carry them out.

Famously Henry Ford adopted this style of management in his car factory. The piece and rate pay system that this concept of management instigated gained much recognition as it linked effort to final reward. Whilst this strategy gained much acceptance and did lead in many instances to increased efficiency and productivity, it became evident over time that there were significant flaws with it. The assignment of workers to a repetitive task and the piece-rate system of pay assumed that the sole concern of the employee was wage related. This ignored other psychological needs of the worker, and the routine of repetitive task performance in a set and standardised manner lead to boredom and apathy amongst staff over longer periods of time.

Trade unions concerns, with this style of management, centred on the possible exploitation of the workforce under a piece-rate payment scheme. It was feared that jobs would be lost as a result of employees not meeting the targets set. Scientific management also concentrates on the functional tasks within an organisation and largely ignores the need to relate to an external dynamic environment.

Despite being largely outdated in today's management process, scientific management established the principle of management being a specialised career. Solving the problems of efficiency and productivity has its roots in this original work. Today all organisations continue to have as their ultimate goal increased productivity and efficiency. This leads to an increased overall profit, from which both management and workforce may mutually benefit.

· Administrative Management

Henry Fayol (1841-15) was a French industrialist and one of the most influential early management thinkers. He spent his entire life working with one mining company where he rose from an apprentice to General Manager.

In contrast to Taylor, Fayol concentrated on the senior management of an organisation and concluded that there were 6 essential business activities. These areas were- technical, commercial, financial, security, accounting and managerial. This gave recognition to management as a separate and distinct business activity. Administrative management suggested there were universal principles for senior managers that could be applied by them to solve all situations.

A managers five main activities he described as planning, organisation, command, co-ordination and control.

He also identified 14 basic principles of management based on his life times experience -

1. Division of labour.

. Authority

. Discipline

4. Unity of command

5. Unity of direction

6. Subordination of individual interest to general

7. Remuneration

8. Scalar chain

. Order

10. Equity

11. Stability of Tenure

1. Initiative

1. Espirit de Corps

14. Centralisation

Rigid application of a set of rules and procedures was not part of his concept of management, rather he recognised the requirement of flexibility. These principles included room for individual initiative, efficiency, teamwork, clarity in command, the flow of information with good communication, and the idea that the general interest had to supersede the individual interest.

The five principles of management that Fayol recognised are closely related to the modern day principles of management. Modern teaching of management theory recognises the key management functions as being planning, organising, staffing, leading and controlling. Fayols ideas have endured the test of time more than other early management theorists and remain relevant in today's organisation.

Macbeth

Content Questions

Act I, Scene i

1. The play commences in the midst of thunder and lightning, a common pathetic fallacy used to represent evilness and impiety. The witches further promote the theme of sin and immorality by their mere presence. They help to establish an eerie atmosphere by their paradox verses such as "Fair is foul, and foul is fair…" (Kortes ). Hence the setting is very creepy and uncanny due to supernatural presence of the witches and the gloomy surroundings.

Custom Essays on Macbeth's deterioration of conscious

. The witches convey important information about the outcome of the civil war and where and how they plan to encounter Macbeth. This information also informs the reader of the power the witches possess and how their minds function.

Macbeth is described as an honorable hero who has saved his King various times from the mouth of danger. He is portrayed as a strong, virtuous man possessing both the determination and confidence needed to defeat his enemies. The soldier in simple terms depicted Macbeth as being invincible; a force that was too powerful for traitors such as Macdonwald and the Thane of Cawdor to face. "…but all's too weak; …Till he faced the slave;" (Kortes 1)

It is quite evident that Duncan is a very trusting, generous and grateful man. This is obvious as he does not view Macbeth's bravery as an act that must be bestowed upon the king but on the contrary he sees it as an act of loyalty that Macbeth chose to do. He is thus very grateful and generous in his praise. He also seems to be a fair ruler as he rewards both his generals for their loyalty.

Banquo views the witches' prophecies skeptically as he does not trust their authority and senses the evil that revolves around them. He does not appreciate the witches' paradox and is dissatisfied with their account of his future. This is perhaps another reason for his cynical beliefs. On the other hand, Macbeth is greatly influenced by what the witches have to say perhaps due to the fact he wants so badly for the prophecies to be true. His greed and ambition persuade him to trust the Weird Sisters and he is further convinced by the fulfillment of the first two prophecies.

When Macbeth is told of his future as King, his conscience immediately starts to break down as he thinks of murdering Duncan right away. This proves that he is in a state of confusion as he struggles with what is right and what is wrong, and the consequences of his actions. The reader realizes that though Macbeth may be very strong on the outside, in reality his character is very weak to temptation. Even at this point, Macbeth seems to be a good man as he is horrified by his own ideas.

Macbeth's asides reveals a side to his character that even he is not familiar with. He faces the conflict of man vs. self as he struggles to realize how far he is willing to go to achieve his ambitions. In the end, he ends up being so confused that he decides to leave his future to fate.

Memory is used to store both programs and data instructions. Program instructions are coded data which tell the computer to do something, represented by the binary code (1's and 0's). Data is simply information to be used by the program, i.e. two numbers to be added together. A central processing unit (CPU) gets instructions and/or data from memory, decodes the instructions, and performs a sequence of programmed tasks. We need something to decode the memory and determine what represents instructions and what represents data; this is the CPU's purpose. The CPU acts as the brain of the computer. It can not think on its own though, it can only perform tasks programmed on the computer.

First the computer must fetch the instructions from the memory. Then it has to decode the instruction. Finally it performs the indicated operations. These tasks can be performed by using input and output devices. Example of input devices are Keyboards, Mouses, and Software. An example of an output device is a printer.

A Central Processing Unit has a Control Unit, Arithmetic Logic Unit, and Registers. The control unit decodes the programmed instructions, has a program counter which contains the location of the next instruction to be executed, and has a status register which monitors the execution of instructions and keeps track of overflows, carries, borrows, etc. A Reduced Instruction Set Machine or RISC, executes a simple set of instructions very fast. A Complex Instruction Set or CISC has a powerful set of instructions which allows many complex operations to be represented as a single instruction.

The Arithmetic Logic Unit carries out the instructions decoded by the control unit. Older microprocessors had special registers called accumulators which had to be used for math calculations. Modern microprocessors such as the 68000 have general-purpose registers and do not have accumulators.

Buy cheap How memory is stored on a computer term paper

There are two types of ways you can store memory, ROM and RAM. ROM or Read Only Memory is non-volatile, meaning all bits can be read, but no bits can be changed; does not erase when the computer is turned off. RAM or Random Access Memory is volatile, which means all bits can be read and or written; usually erases when your computer is turned off.

Computers use the binary number system to store data. The binary code is a two number system. The reason computers use the base- system is because it makes it a lot easier to implement them with current electronic technology. You could wire up and build computers that operate in base-10, but they would be fiendishly expensive right now. On the other hand, base- computers are relatively cheap. So computers use binary numbers, and therefore use binary digits in place of decimal digits. The word bit is a shortening of the words Binary digit. Whereas decimal digits have 10 possible values ranging from 0 to , bits have only two possible values 0 and 1. 8 bits equal one byte.

Memorandum

To Blockbuster Executive Management

CC John Antioco, Chairman of the Board

From Directors Audit Committee

Date 1/10/00

Re Expectation of Roles, Duties and or, Responsibilities

The now famous Enron collapse entered the public eye almost one year ago. If it were a case in which Enron were alone in their dealings and this was purely a tail on one corporation's greed, the buzz would surely have died down. The discussion has not died down and there has been a huge reverberative effect on the economy not only from those involved and subsequently effected by Enron and it's partners deceptive practices, but from many other corporations that have now been put under the same regulatory microscope. It is estimated that the Enron collapse cost investors approximately 60 billion. In addition, jobs have been lost, businesses closed or damaged, and most importantly, consumer confidence has been destroyed. Some or our largest, strongest and most trusted corporations, like Citicorp, Chase, and Arthur Anderson, have not merely made mistakes but apparently set out to conspire with Enron to knowingly deceive investors. JP Morgan Chase is said to have developed the structure of the transactions with what Enron called "Special Purpose Entities", which merely amounted to shell companies, and for their deceptive scheme they were paid 5.5 million. Deceptive tax strategies, buying and selling of businesses, questionable loans, were all part of the plan and there were many outsiders along the way warning of the risks and many insiders taking the risks to make huge amounts of money and maintain their lucrative relationship with Enron. I would venture to say that if the Board of Directors, and the investors in any of the above named companies were to be asked now if they think their dealings with Enron were worth the gain, the answer would surely be no.

Blockbuster Inc. is publicly traded and that should mean something. The equities market exists to build companies, provide jobs, provide goods and services, and provide financial gain for all that invest not just a select few. As the Directors audit committee, we do not have the ability to single handedly change the investors minds and instantly instill confidence in the US equities markets. However, we can play a large part in making sure Blockbuster Inc. remains a viable, ethical and profitable as long as investors choose to trust Blockbuster Inc. with their investment dollars. With that in mind, we have set out to outline our expectations of the roles, duties, and responsibilities of senior management and our outside auditors in relation to the certification of the company's financial condition and results of operations. In addition, we have outlined those same expectations when it comes to our roles as the directors audit committee.

Senior Management

Senior Management is responsible for taking ownership of projects as well as preparing briefings on business changes and providing guidance on risk management. These managers must set the pace for the overall business strategy. This should be implemented by initially describing the short term and long term direction of the business. Accordingly, Senior management must define the business vision, strategic themes and incorporate avenues for changes or enhancements to current programs and project contributions. Due to the fact that there will be changes in the business environment, Senior management must be prepared to monitor and update areas when necessary. They should anticipate future needs as well as current business requirements. In a recent speech by SEC Commissioner, Roel C. Campos he stated, "senior management should make it clear to employees through their words and conduct that ethics matter. Senior management should establish practices that acknowledge and commend acts of honesty and ethical behavior." (Campos pg.1) Senior management must be fair, honest and demonstrate to both employees and shareholders that an ethical culture is a privilege and not a sacrifice. In order for a business to truly be successful, senior management must be honest and trustworthy. There must be a constant focus on ensuring that there are adequate standards and procedures in place to meet goals. Senior managers should focus on, "advising the auditing department of all matters affecting the fulfillment of their responsibilities, including the distribution of new approved policies and procedures within the respective units." (McPhilimy pg. 1) By utilizing training and communication initiatives along with monitoring and auditing systems, Senior management will be able to maintain a better grasp of day to day operations.

Outside Auditors

The outside auditors role is to ensure that Blockbuster is operated more efficiently by ensuring that its public records are maintained accurately and taxes are paid properly and on time. The auditors are to perform these roles by offering an array of business and accounting services.

Their specific duties should vary widely among the four major fields of accounting. Public accounting will perform a board range of accounting, auditing, tax, and consulting activates. Management accounting will record and analyze the financial information of Blockbusters' ethical work. Government accounting will maintain and examine the records of government agencies and audit Blockbusters' activities that are subject to government regulations. They should also specialize in internal auditing this is to verify the accuracy of Blockbusters' records and check for mismanagement, waste, or fraud.

The duties and/or responsibilities of the outside auditors will be to annually inspect reports of Blockbuster. The auditors will have been empowered to investigate and discipline Blockbusters' accounting procedures. Some of the other responsibilities will include

· Offer advice in areas of compensation and employee healthcare benefits.

· Evaluate the design of the accounting and data processing systems.

· Review the controls to safeguard assets.

· Investigate and interpret bankruptcies and various complex financial transactions.

· Analyze and interpret the financial information for corporate executives need to make sound decisions.

· Prepare financial reports for stockholders, creditors, regulatory agencies, and tax authorities.

· Review Company operations- evaluating their efficiency wants compliance with corporate policies and procedures.

Qualifications for outside auditor's personnel

· Auditors are required to test compliance with securities laws and regulations related to accurate records to describe and significant defects in issuer's of inter control and any material noncompliance of which the auditor should know based on the audit testing.

· The lead auditor and concurring auditors for the audit team should be replaced every three years.

· The current Chief Executive Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Controller Chief Accounting Officer can not have pervious work history with the audit firm, or any other affiliation with Blockbuster.

The outsider auditors are to retain work papers of audits for at least seven years in sufficient detail to support the conclusion of all audit findings. All in all the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires every publicly held company to issue an annual financial statement and the outside auditors are to ensure the Board of Directors the report is filed.

Directors Audit Committee

Shareholders rely on the audit committee to embrace the new rules and provide independent and effective supervision of the financial reporting process. What is also important are the expectations the audit committee places on other players in the financial reporting process. This committee is largely expected to provide advice and counsel to the staff and especially to the senior management team. The primary objective of this committee is to assist the board in fulfilling its responsibilities in respect of the accounting and reporting policies, in addition to providing an unbiased and detailed scrutiny of all financial reports to be reported to the Board of Directors.

This audit committee expects help from senior management team in understanding the key elements of the company's internal controls over the financials, yet we will also seek outside independent advice in the review and interpretations of those controls and their effectiveness. Since we are the overall guardians of the financial integrity for Blockbuster Video shareholders, we will request that appropriate financial capital is allocated to the company's financial reporting process. We also expect this committee and the senior management team should have unlimited access to one another. An open and candid dialogue is very imperative in order for each party to meet the other's expectations.

Conclusion

As noted above in regards to the Enron scandal, it was a collaborative effort that caused the collapse of the corporation and subsequent loss of jobs, money, and businesses by many whom had no control. What we have outlined above is a collaborate effort to ensure that that does not happen at Blockbuster. The individual profit motive and pressure to meet analyst expectations is a healthy motivator in all publicly traded organization, yet this same motivator can cause people to make bad decisions as well. We must utilize an effective and evolving system of checks and balances to make sure that special interests and individual motives are kept in check. Our plan above outlines the roles and responsibilities as they relate to certifying our financial condition and operations results. It is our entire ongoing obligation to the shareholders to always look to improve the systems that are designed to protect and preserve Blockbuster Inc. as a long term thriving and growing asset.

High School Heartaches

It seems like today whenever I read about public schools I see the same exact questions or statements. ?What exactly are our children learning in school?? ?Are public schools the right answer?? Finally, the ever popular, ?Low test scores in public schools.? Well I guess you can add two more writers to the list. Casey Banas and Mary Sherry have both written stories about our high schools and the education they provide to their students. Banas wrote an article called, ?Why Are Students Turned Off?? This article is mainly about a woman named Ellen Glanz who became a student for a little while to see how it is like in a high school class. Glanz later reported to Banas on her experience. The other writer, Sherry, entitled her essay ?In Praise of the F Word.? This is mainly about how teachers should start failing students if they do not deserve to pass the course they are enrolled in. The arguments that these two writers bring to the table are interesting, and do need to be taken into some consideration. The two essays agree on three arguments. These arguments consist of problems with the educational system, teachers who need to get the students? attention and the students? future after high school.

First and foremost, both essays agree that the educational system has problems. According to Glanz, a high school social studies teacher posing as a student, students did not do that much in order to pass classes or get good grades on tests. Also she found many classes dull and assignments were avoidable. One example on how to maneuver around assignments that Glanz gave was to give an excuse to the teacher for not doing homework assignments and the teacher accepted the excuse with no questions asked. The only option Glanz saw when returning back to work was to expect and demand more out of her students. Glanz is now preaching, ?You are responsible for learning,? (p. 660) to her students. In Sherry?s essay she talks about how high school students were ?cheated? by their teachers. According to Sherry many students that she has had in the past were upset at the educational system because they were passed to the next grade even though they did not learn the course fully. As you can see Sherry has found a weakness in the armor of our educational system, but she does have a cure for this weakness, she suggests failing the student. If the student does not learn what they need to know to succeed in the next step of their educational career, then they should not take that next step in their educational career.

Also, Banas and Sherry agree that teachers need to get the attention of their students. One of Glanz disappointments while posing as a student was how boring classes were. Once again Banas had Glanz comment on this problem, and she many suggestions for the teachers to make their classes more active for the students. She suggests that teachers need to find the best and easiest way to present a new topic. Also, to know whom to ask for answers and whom to try to keep silent, when to be comical and when to let the students know that it?s business time. So she is saying that teachers need to be clear cut on the subject, and be well informed but at the same time entertaining to the students in order to get their attention. Sherry once again points to that horrible letter ?F?. The most feared letter for any student, this letter can destroy an entire grade point average, and Sherry says that it can be used as a shell shock to some students who are going through the motions in order to pass. Sherry tells a very compelling story about her son slacking off in class, then the teacher threaten to fail him, and of course he straightened up and was a ?straight arrow?, concentrating very hard on this subject and ending up with an ?A?. There is no doubt about it, hearing that I am going to fail something will grab my attention very quickly. So maybe Sherry is right about having a rude awakening for all those slackers out there and just speak the truth to them, lay it all out on the table and tell the truth. If they are not going to pass tell them that they are going to fail. A shock like that will grab attention from the student.

Custom Essays on High School Heart Ache

Finally, both writers worry about the students? futures after leaving high school. Banas says that certain students are infatuated on getting those good grades in order to get into that dream college of theirs, but the students blame the teachers for not teaching a certain course well enough. Glanz is worried about the high school students? future since many admit to cheating on tests or on papers and feel that they have done nothing wrong. If students graduate thinking that they can skate through life by leeching off another person, then they are going to learn a quick lesson when they graduate high school. Sadly many students believe that being honest and doing what is right plays second fiddle to getting the higher grader in the class. Sherry believes in the same thing as Banas, but Sherry takes it a step further by saying that employers of the graduates are going to suffer due to lack of actual education of the employee.

Once again both Banas and Sherry make good points on how we can change our schools for the better, but I must digress for a moment and say something about failing as an eye opener for students. It is pure ignorance to think that just because you tell someone that they are going to fail they will wake up and succeed without any motivation from anyone else. Everyone, not just students, needs someone behind them to encourage them to complete that last obstacle whether it is that extra mile to run, that one more question for the quiz, or writing that last sentence in an essay.

Stage 1 the tool bar/banner

The first thing I did was to open up FrontPage and create a new WebPage. With FrontPage, I can edit the html as well as creating the page with images etc. similar to word, but easier to use with all the html web effects being incorporated into the design screen making it very easy.

My WebPage has a toolbar down the side and to make it look better, I decided to get the measurements and create the side tool bar in Adobe PhotoShop, which I could then add some effects but not too many as it needs to be easy to see and use.

The sidebar is a lightish shade of blue, with a little bit of shadow on the sides just to give it a good look. The shadow was done in PhotoShop by selecting the image and then effects. Also, I divided the tool bar into sections where the different web pages will be hyperlinked from to the other pages. gradient overlay which flows into a slightly darker blue, mainly so it doesn't all look the same and look uninteresting. The text inside the banner is simple at the moment to see how it looks with the rest, but I may change the text from times new roman to something a bit more interesting, but not strange and unreadable. The text is with shadow, but no other effects, as it has to be readable and neat. The banner was also made in adobe PhotoShop, but then copied and pasted into FrontPage where I then edited it into my WebPages.

Now I've just about sorted out the toolbar and banner, apart from any changes I may make when I see what the rest of the page looks like, I now needed to put the garden centre logo in the top corner. This was easy, as it was a simple copy and paste into the top corner, but I also had to hyperlink it to the main page every time it is clicked. This is the same for each page, so whoever is viewing the webpage can easily get back to the main page with the click of a button.

The Most Democratic Voting System

I personally believe the most democratic voting system is in fact not the system of the "most democratic" United States but the majority vote we use in Canada. The United States voting system goes by an electoral vote which is not necessarily the majority vote. This does not always mean that the person with the most votes gets elected. The Presidential election is decided by the combined results of 51 State elections and not one nation wide vote. The individual citizen's vote is important to the outcome of each state election but not the election of the president since you vote only helps decide which candidate receives your state's electoral vote. In this case of the 000 presidential election, with Bush versus Gore, Bush was elected President despite the fact that the majority of voters did not vote for Bush but instead a third party Nader won in the state of Florida. If Nader had not run in Florida Gore would have won in Florida and thus would have won Presidency. Nadar is known as a spoiler. Spoilers are a frequent problem in the Electoral College because most states use a plurality voting system where the candidate with the most votes wins the electoral vote. as you can see this voting system was very un democratic since the candidate who was really most popular lost because of a spoiler. Situations like this convince me that the American system of voting although it seems democratic really does not represent a democratic system, since the candidate the majority of the people liked was not elected.

This information leads to my conclusion that the Canadian system of voting is the most democratic although it does not represent each province individually it represents the majority. It is true that if the majority of people in Ontario vote for candidate "X" and no one votes for candidate "x" in Newfound land, it is more likely that candidate "X" will be elected since Ontario's population is much larger than the population of Newfoundland. This doesn't seem fair to the Newfoundlanders who were voting for a candidate based on their personal needs. This system is indeed fair since the seats of the House of Commons are delegated by the population in each province; this ensures that a place like Newfoundland will have representatives for their point of view. The seats in the House of Commons insure that the concerns of smaller provinces such as Newfound Land are heard by the Prime Minister. It is fair that a larger province with a larger population will have more representatives than a smaller province since the since the concerns coming from these seats in the house represent a larger body of people. I believe that any way you break it down each citizen of the country should have one vote that counts equally among all people of all provinces. This way everyone has an equal say as to who will become the prime minister; and a true majority vote is used. I believe that because of this the Canadian voting system is most democratic.

Media played an important role, in my sexual socialization. It seemed as if everyone had sex by the time they were eighteen years old and if not, they were a loser. Sex was suppose to make us cool. One of my girlfriends even pledged that if she did not lose her virginity by the age of eighteen, she was going to commit suicide. I got my first image of how I wanted my first time to be from the show General Hospital. It was two young adults, Lucky and Liz whom both wanted to lose their virginity to each other. It was done very tastefully and romantically, with the two pledging their love for one another and then having sex in a secluded cottage. Soft music played and flowers were placed everywhere. It seemed like the first time having sexual intercourse was going to be just as amazing. However, the media misinformed me. I soon learned that the first time is nothing like that. Instead it's filled with tons of unknowns and insecurities.

I think the media needs to portray more sexual intercourse more realistically. That is for example, with the female feeling pressured by the male to have it or the male being scared and so on. I know no one talked to me and so I learned the hard way. For instance, the nervousness of putting a condom on a male for the first time. In addition, I think schools should also educate their students about sex.

As I am taking this class overall, I am learning about how much I really don't know about my body and about sex. It is really shocking. For instance I am a female that has been menstruating for about five years and still was not really aware what occurs during my monthly cycle. I think this class is a true eye opener to us, young adults, whom think we know it all.

Childhood obesity levels are increasing at disturbing rates in Australia and many other countries. Childhood and adolescent obesity occurs when a child has too much body fat. Obesity is usually caused by eating too much and not getting enough exercise whatever the genetic background. It is almost always blamed on the child's genes but genes are responsible for 5 to 40 percent of all cases of obesity. The rest is chiefly influenced by environmental factors. The Body mass index (BMI) can determine if a child is obese

Growth charts, such as weight-for-age and weight-for-height, are most commonly used to find out if children are overweight or obese. The BMI can be calculated by dividing a child or adolescents weight (kilograms) by their height (m). The suggested international cut-off points for when a child is considered obese are

years and over - 0.0 for boys and 1.81 for girls

5 years - 1.0 for boys and 1.17 for girls

Cheap University Papers on Obesity in Children Living within Australia

10 years - 4.00 for boys and 4.11 for girls

15 years - 8.0 for boys and .11 for girls

18 years and over - 0 for both males and females.

Overweight or obese children are most likely to remain obese as adolescents than slimmer children. Adolescence appears to be a particularly sensitive period for the development of obesity. About 80 per cent of obese adolescents will become obese adults. This is why we need to target the problem while they are young.

Potential problems for obese children include; Respiratory disorders such as upper airway obstruction and chest wall restriction, along with worsening of asthma; Cardiomyopathy; Pancreatitis; and Orthopaedic (bone) disorders. These that I have mentioned are more of a problem to the severely obese and are not common. Although The increasing problem of asthma is definitely an exception.

In adolescents, obesity can multiply cardiovascular risks, abnormal glucose tolerance (leading to diabetes), hypertension, and cholesterol abnormalities.

The most immediate consequences of being overweight during childhood and adolescence are psychosocial. Obese children have low self-esteem due to teasing and name calling from other children of a healthier weight. Due to this it has been found that obese children are more likely to

Not do very well in school,

Have poor job prospects, and

Be socially isolated.

Obesity is usually caused by

Overeating - many obese children overeat, mainly from boredom and depression. The food they eat tends to be high in dietary fat. Most of this fat is stored in the body rather than being used for energy because they aren't active. Weight gain will occur if excess energy is consumed as fat, protein or carbohydrate.

Binge eating - some overweight people eat normally and healthily most of the time but binge eat now and then. This means that they eat a lot of food in a very short period of time.

Low activity levels - children are much less active these days. This is probably because of the number of hours they spend watching television, playing on the computer and other electronic-based sedentary activities. Children who watch more than 10 hours of television a week are more likely to be overweight. Many reports have found that most young people aged seven and above were inactive and that girls were even less active than boys. This needs to be cut down, and more outdoor sports and leisure needs to be encouraged.

Many social factors such as low income, and a low level of education have also been linked to obesity. Binge eating is common in people who are dealing with emotional stress. A prime example of binge eating due to emotional stress is the following case; You just get dumped by your boyfriend and you feel like the world is crumbling around you. What do you do? What else except reach for the spoon and the huge tub of chocky ice-cream in the freezer and eat till your hearts content (or at least till its empty and you have to go to the store and buy another).

So how are we going to manage the problem? Children with obesity should be given nutrition advice and most importantly encouraged to increase their activity levels. Some helpful things are the following

Nutritional advice - weight loss programs or diets are not effective amongst children. Instead, they should be given nutritional advice and they need help to change their behaviour patterns towards food. However, this is not effective unless combined with exercise. Restricting food intake, in particular fat, is not suggested for young children as they need it because it is an important part in their growth. Snacking often makes up half of a childs energy intake, it may delay or prevent extreme hunger and possible binge eating. The important thing is to make sure that snacks are not always junk foods.

Increased activity - children should be encouraged to choose physical activities over inactive activities. Low intensity exercise such as walking is good but vigorous activity is desirable and should be encouraged where possible. Strengthening exercises can regulate and enhance the bodys metabolism by building muscle.

Geography, Kobe Assessment

In January 15 a road connecting Kobe with Osaka collapsed during the most deadly earthquake to hit Japan since 1. The quake ignited firestorms and caused massive destruction in Kobe.5,000+people were killed and hundreds of thousands were left homeless. Kobe was at risk from an Earthquake because buildings in central Kobe were structured with computer control and they were made to adjust to the earth's movement. The Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake was not only powerful (magnitude 6. ), but with the epicentre only 0km southwest of the city, it resulted in massive damage to property and loss of life.

When the earthquake had finished the full extent of the damage was shown. Many buildings in Kobe were older and had heavy tile roofs that collapsed on the occupants. Soil and foundation condition, mainly fault and type of structural system were major decisive factors in the performance of structures.

Kobe is a largely populated area, the earthquake subsequently caused a lot of death and damage. In Kobe there are a lot of factories, which export many varied things including fruit, vegetables, tea, electrical equipment and textiles. Most of the factories that exported these items were either damaged or destroyed. This also made the export rate to go down. The earthquake also caused a lot of damage because is was a very strong earthquake measuring on the Richter scale at 6..

The damage risks can be reduced if people live in an earthquake proof house. This reduces the scale of mass destruction caused in January 15. The risks can be reduced in more investigations into the preventing earthquakes from happening also more research in warning devices so people can prepare for the earthquake and go and find safety. Build an earthquake shelter similar to Air-raid shelter.

A Warning siren.

Marie Forsa (Maria Lynn) was the greatest erotic actress. She was a cute little blonde Swedish thing, slender and pert, but with subtle dark rings under her eyes that give her a vaguely doomed look she looked for all the world like Helen Slaters little sister. She was not an accomplished dramatic actress, but for simulating sex (or simulating emotion during real sex) she was peerless.

Forsa starred in many XXX films, yet there is (almost) no hardcore footage of her anywhere, which has led to much controversy and misinformation about her career, so lets get to the bottom of it.

Forsas career closely followed that of Christina Lindberg, who was Swedens reigning nudie queen during Forsas early career. Lindberg didnt go all the way in any of her films, and doing hardcore sex would have been a career killer it still is. Always leave em wanting more. Sex film fanciers are faced with a paradoxthey always want more, but are more entertained when given less. The most precious commodity in adult film is the sense that you are seeing something special or precious.

Forsas contract with the producer of most of her films stipulated that she was NEVER to have sex on camera, or have any clear genital shots. Her public image was limited to about what was shown in Playboy magazine in the mid-170s. Was this prudery or clever career management? Either way, it worked brilliantly. Forsa was the top-billed star in numerous XXX films and yet there isnt a single really explicit shot of her having sex, or even a genital close-up.

Or is there?

Forsa was an unusually uninhibited young woman, and there is no doubt at all that she often engaged in real sex on camera. Though her contract stipulated that she do only softcore work, the real concern was her public image, not her personal virtue. In fact, she seems to have done something very rareshe had sexual intercourse with her co-stars on camera that she knew would just be cut out of the final film, because she wanted to have sex with them... even in front of an entire film crew, or perhaps because she was in front of an entire film crew.

She did hardcore acting that was trimmed down to softcore, and frequently then edited back up to hardcore using inserts of other womens bodies. Why would directors work with an actress who exerted such remarkable control over her image, since everyone else in those films simply does whatever is asked of them? Because she was that good.

What mattered (to her career) was the final edit, not what she did on the set. Since she was frequently working hard, Joe Sarno and Mac Ahlberg clearly had some footage in the can that included well lit genital close-ups and hardcore sex (given the way movies are made as a technical process, there is no way around that statement) which could never be released. Thats not unusualimagine how much nude footage is shot of Hollywood actresses to come up with a few seconds of fleeting nudity in the finished film. The most be hours of unused takes of Jennifer Connelly from Mullholland Falls, for instance, but that footage will probably never be released in any form, despite being highly marketable.

The use of inserts of hardcore footage of other actresses makes it all confusing, since Ahlberg and Sarno employed very clever tricks. There are hardcore fellatio scenes in FLOSSIE that are supposed to be Forsa, but are actually a stand-in, where the girls entire face is shown. And it works.

The definition of hardcore has always been a moving target, so what did it mean in Sweden in the 170s? And what did it mean to Forsa? There are lots of stray snippets of film involving Forsa that are hardcore by contemporary American standards. No matter what her contract said, the film is always the best evidence of the film.

So here is our opinion of what Forsa did and didnt do.

BUTTERFLIES Perhaps the hottest sex scene ever filmed -- the bedroom scene with Eric Edwards towards the beginning of BUTTERFLIES, is actual Forsa hardcore. There was an XXX edit of BUTTERFLIES, but the original softcore edit isnt softcore; merely tasteful hardcore. Marie Forsa did NOT do any of the added close-up inserts in BUTERFLIES XXX, but everything in the original BUTTERFLIES is her. These comments are about the Seduction Cinema original edit that we currently carry. In the Eric Edwards scene there are many clear hardcore shots of she and Edwards having sex -- tasteful and subtle, but still undeniably Forsa and undeniably hardcore. So whats up with that? The evidence is so plain that the only reason anyone would even consider that they arent just flat-out doing it is that the original release of BUTTERFLIES is supposed to be softcore. Perhaps we can shed some light... here is what Eric Edwards had to say

My first European movie was for Joe Sarno. In Butterflies I starred with Harry Reems and Maria Forsa. I found it a great joy to be flown to Europe, put up in a hotel and get paid to have sex also. Those were soft core films though I couldnt help myself with Maria. I did it hard anyway. Maria and I had a fling. It was wonderful. She was just my style. Whenever Id go back to Europe, we couldnt help ourselves. We screwed everywhere - out in the bushes, in the Jacuzzi, anywhere we could, even in dangerous places where you could get caught such as in a public pool where people could walk in any time. Wed do it five or six times a day. Those were my good ol days.

This helps clear things up, and the state of affairs was as we deduced -- she was an uninhibited woman who had sex on camera, but pretended she didnt for career reasons. Every shot of her having intercourse suggests a possible way the shot could be faked, even though the were NOT faked. During the Watergate scandals, this was called plausible deniability. The more you look at her films, the more amazing the charade becomes. There is never a single frame of film that shows her face, and shows an undeniable hardcore element. Forsas latter sex scenes with Harry Reems in BUTTERFLIES are also hardcore, and also full of plausible deniability.

Edwards comments also explain why that scene in BUTTERFLIES is so incredibly erotic. Keep in mind, soft core has had a thousand different definitions over time and geography. BUTTERFLIES is a hardcore film by American definitions, but was a soft core film by the regional definition Sarno was working with in 175 Sweden. It is so rare for an actress to have an unfeigned sexual response on film... how ironic that one of those few instances may be in a soft core film!

BEL AMI Forsa was the female lead in this lovely XXX movie, but doesnt have the most screen time. She was a star! Harry Reems has sex with the entire cast, and its all hardcore except the scenes with Forsa. We are confident that she and Reems were really having sex in BEL AMI, though. They seem to be, and she had intercourse with Reems filming BUTTERFLIES, so why not in BEL AMI?

MOLLY Ms. Forsas tongue is on another womans labia during one of the lesbian scenes. No way around that. In 170s Europe reticent Sapphic oralism probably wasnt considered a big deal. Hiding the penis has always been the biggest distinction, with many surprisingly anatomically explicit scenes of girls (like in some German sex comedies) that dont even show one second of even a flacid penis.

FLOSSIE The body doubling in Flossie is the most audacious in cinematic history. In the fellatio close-ups in the first sex scene, you see the girls entire face at times, and how could that be fake? Well, it is! Notice the shape of where the mouth meets the cheek... now, towards the beginning of the first decadent orgy scene, there is a shot of a girl reclining on her right side (her head to the left of the frame), and that is her mouth. No doubt. So Ahlberg had the bravado to cut in FACIAL close-ups of a porn extra that looked a little like Forsa.

The girl-girl masturbation scene poses a problem the hand doing the close-up masturbating seems to be Forsas hand, so is that her blonde vulva? Tough to say, since the same distinctive vulva seems to show up in a hard-core close-up later in that film. So if the masturbation close-up is real, then Forsa did her own XXX insert work for FLOSSIE. Did she? Probably not, but it is a damn good match for her build and coloration... The vagina double for Forsa in Flossie was probably the girl in the blind-folded boyfriend scene that the guy eventually has intercourse with. Again, a girl that looks a lot like Forsa, and not the same girl as the fellatio double.

But maybe Forsa did some of her own vulval close-ups in FLOSSIE... the plausible deniability is in full effect. During the masturbation scene there is no shot that shows Forsas face, and any vulval detail at the same time, and the close-ups are obviously inserts. But are they her? We used to be certain they were not, but now we can only say its probably not, because of...

IMMORAL TALES Walerian Borowczyks IMMORAL TALES may be the best narrowly erotic film of them all, and its fitting that Forsa has a cameo. During the Countess Bathory story Forsa appears (un-credited) for a few seconds as one of a mob of 0 girls attacking the Countess. The countesses pearl necklace is ripped off. Forsa puts some of the pearls in her mouth. She spits the pearls into her left hand, takes one large pearl with her right hand, and presses it against her private parts in close-up. Since she is little more than an extra, theres no compelling reason to use a body double, and its impossible to imagine Borowczyk wasting his time with games like that... he considered himself an artist, not a pornographer.

Still, theres always room for paranoia in any Forsa scene. Is it really her? In IMMORAL TALES, it sure is. Though the sequence is divided into three shots, you see her spit the pearl into her hand, and the pinkie on her right hand has a tiny mark or mole below the second knuckle, and its the same hand as in the following close-up. (DVD to the rescue) So since we know there is a genital close-up in IMMORAL TALES, is it the same vulva as in the FLOSSIE masturbation scene?

Like we said... 50-50. The hand looks right, and theres no visual evidence that it isnt. It could be. Its awfully close. If FLOSSIE is ever released on DVD, it should be possible to say for sure.

From the onset of Gullivers Travels, Swift creates for us a seemingly competent character and narrator in Gulliver. In his account we learn how his adventures have changed him and his perception of people, for the central theme of this story is how human nature and reason reflect society.

On the whole, Gulliver is a very frustrating character to deal with for a number of reasons. For example, hes not steady; this unsteadiness as a narrator leads us to question the validity of what Gulliver tells us. This means that we have to be on our guard against what he says, and even though hes our guide, we cant follow him everywhere, which is just what Swift wanted. Gulliver makes many apologies for himself and his actions and puts us the reader emotionally involved in the story. Gulliver seems to direct a good deal of hostility toward us, creating a tinge of hostility back at him. Ultimately, Gulliver works as a narrator because we can relate to him and as a result find him engaging. We too can jump from emotion to emotion, but in the long run, Swift is not attempting to create an Everyman. This Gulliver is not, by any means a wholly allegorical character, but as much an individual as the next person. In certain ways, Gulliver proves to be more resilient than the average man by managing to survive the disaster shipwrecks and people so foreign they might as well be aliens. Still in other ways Gulliver is a naïve person, bereft of decency and consideration.

Gulliver is an entirely credible and probable person at the same time that he is precisely the person to be the instrument for Swifts satire. In his incredible circumstances, Gulliver shows himself to be very resourceful and observant of his surroundings. With that he changes in relation to the places he visits and the events that befall him as he voyages. As a traveler in Lilliput, hes careful in his observations and complete in his descriptions. Occupied as he is with the surface of things, we see Gullivers problem of not seeing with eyes wide open. Gulliver wanes in his judgment of character as he becomes more and more narrow-minded as the story progresses. So do we still see him as a good, all-around type of guy?

Lest we forget that he does get knocked around while hes traveling, a primary reason for his shift in attitude. In Lilliput he seems to be eminently fair-minded compared to the cunning, vindictive, petty Lilliputians. Literally a giant in their land, Gulliver never takes unfair advantage of his size in his dealing with them. Though theyre violent with him, he never retaliates. However in Brobdingnag, Gulliver appears Lilliputian in more ways than one. Still, his size is a dire problem. He is frequently injured, as the kings dwarf takes out his frustrations on Gulliver, but the latter is an improvement from his job as a freak at village fairs.

Order Custom Essay on gullivers travels

Ultimately, Gulliver has a hard time keeping it together under the strain of repeated attacks on his ego, and in his dealings with the Brobdingnagian king, Gulliver appears as nasty and cruel as the Lilliputians themselves. This is his tone when he returns to England, an angry man who thinks himself more a Brobdingnagian than anything else.
