Label your tubes as instructed (1-8 or all 8 one number). Ask your teacher!

Prepare a lysozyme and salt solution for "Experiment Station."

You will dissolve the lysozyme in the acetate buffer.

1. Bring tour team's Erlenmeyer flask or medicine portion cup to the stock station.

Buy cheap science expierement term paper

. While one teammate is getting the buffer another teammate can be setting up the array tubes numbering them 1 through 8 near the top of the tube.

. Measure out exactly 10 ml of the buffer to 15-ml conical tube. Use a dropper pipette to remove and excess volume. Put the excess volume in the waste beaker (Marked).

4. Pour the 10ml of buffer solution from the measuring tube into the Erlenmeyer flask and return with the flask to your experiment station.

5. Place a clean, dry powder funnel in the Erlenmeyer flask.

6. To add lysozyme (0.4), hold a gelatin capsule vertically and tap gently to get most of the powder to bottom carefully pull off the cap (it helps to turn or twist the cap first) and pour the lysozyme into the funnel. Tap the capsule and funnel then recap the capsule. Take care not to create or inhale and lysozyme dust.

7. To dissolve the lysozyme let it sit on the surface of the solution. (The less lysozyme on the glass, the better.) It may help to tap the flask on a padded surface to start the dissolving process. After the lysozyme has dissolved (5-10 min.) roll or swirl the flask to incorporate any clinging powder. Now that the lysozyme has been added it is important to avoid creating bubbles unnecessarily. Bubbles that form in protein solutions denature the protein (not desirable.). Now you have a buffer solution supersaturated with lysozyme at a level of 40mg/ml. It will take several minutes for proteins to dissolve.

Add the salt to the dissolved lysozyme in buffer

8. Tap down the salt crystals in the snap-cap tube.

. Carefully, open the snap-cap tube

10. Very slowly add the salt to the Erlenmeyer flask while swirling the flask but avoid splashing the liquid. Do this by tapping several salt crystals each time. Stop adding salt it begins to accumulate on the bottom of the flask but keep swirling.

11. Continue slowly adding salt after the accumulation has dissolved. This is to keep the concentration from becoming too strong in a local area of the solution. Too much salt could cause the liquid to turn cloudy; meaning protein is quickly coming out of solution.

Ever since the early 180's, anyone who did some analysis of what the situation was in the Soviet Union, could easily see that the U.S.S.R. was going to face serious economic, political, population and other problems, during the 10's going into the new the millennium. Even people in the Soviet Union were coming up with the same type of analysis. Mikhail Gorbachev also felt that Soviet Union needed economical and political reforms in order to be able to compete with the United States. Hypothesis can be made that Gorbachev was an instrument to social change in a Soviet Union.

Social movement theory is based on the model, where some kind of strain or disturbance in the social environment, such as an economic depression creates disruptive psychological states in individuals, such as anxiety, and individuals then direct their energy into a social movement in order to relieve their emotional difficulties. Gorbachev led people to believe that changes were needed and started to make reforms that people were not ready for. The only person who knew that U.S.S.R. was really in trouble was Karl Marx. He predicted the first revolution that occurred in 117. Unfortunately government officials did not learn from this example, because second revolution happened only a couple of decades later. The ideas of Marx were not used in Soviet Union, or any other communist countries. Marx felt that workers should be more in control of the government, but communist governments were too strict. Also, government officials censored the press before it was printed out. Journalists were not allowed to print news stories that criticized the government. And people who did write or say something against the Soviet Union government were punished, be being killed or put to jail. And that is the type of government that people in Soviet Union lived.

Marx felt that in order to get to communism, there must be proper steps taken, starting with primitivism, and than going to agriculturism, then going to slavery, and feudalism, then to capitalism, then to socialism and only then to communism. However Soviet Union jumped from feudalism all the way to communism. That was a big change for people that they were not ready for, that caused the second revolution. People were not ready for that change mentally, physically, or economically. People of the Soviet Union were still living an old fashion life style, so a big change was too much for them to handle.

So for about 8 decades people lived in communism, where they did not have a freedom of speech, where government decides where people work, and also people were not allowed to own private businesses. People did not enjoy this life, but that is what they were used to, because their parents lived this life, their grandparents lived that life and they thought that their kids will live that same type of life. However, everything was about to change.

Order College Papers on Gorbachev's Revolution – Perestroika

After the death of Konstantin Chernenko, in 185, Mikhail Gorbachev was selected as a general secretary of the party, even though he was the youngest member of the politburo. Even before he came into power he has reached to the conclusion that things needed to change dramatically in his country, otherwise his country will be hitting the bottom very soon. Soviet Union was already in a very bad situation due to the economic problems. The only income in the Soviet Union was natural resources, and everyone knew that there would be an end to that source soon.

Gorbachev started on a complete program of political, economic and social liberalization by using big words like glasnost (openness), perestroika (restructuring), demokratizatsiya (democratization), and novaya myshleniya (new way of thinking). Through glasnost, Gorbachev initiated a strategy that allowed citizens of the Soviet Union to criticize, question and challenge its leadership. It was something that Soviet citizens never had, and were not used to. By giving people 'voice' it allowed Gorbachev to put pressure on the people whom he knew would oppose his economic and political reforms, which he was planning to undertake. Glasnost was a part of Gorbachev's strategy to initiate a revolution for people of the Soviet Union, and also he wanted to put under pressure nomenklatura (party elite) and apparatchiks (party leaders), because they were strongly opposing his coming up reforms.

Perestroika was Gorbachev's program of cooperatives, management reform and economic accountability. Through perestroika, Gorbachev was encouraging decentralization and private initiative in the economic sector. This program did not become successful right away, because Soviet people lived in communism for a long time. For almost 8 decades they saw their parents working nine to five at the same job throughout their entire life. So the idea of privatization and becoming an owner of a house was unusual to them. Through Perestroika Gorbachev wanted to transform inefficient command economy of the Soviet Union into a decentralized market-oriented economy. Gorbachev also introduced political democracy, where people would get to vote for the president. Before the Congress of People's Deputies were to choose the president and now Gorbachev has given people voice and promised an election that people have not seen since the fall of 117, which was the last democratic election that people of the Soviet Union have witnessed.

The main idea behind open elections that Gorbachev promised to the people was to democratize the Communist party. And the last strategy that Gorbachev introduced was novaya myshleniya, through which Gorbachev wanted to address foreign policy. In a way he was introducing a different way of thinking. While all the changes that Gorbachev has introduced were great; and it was something that people wanted, but were too afraid to say anything about; it was something that people did not know how to deal with. People who were taking advantage of those changes that Gorbachev made, were in a way engaging in collective behavior. Collective behavior is any event during which groups of people engage in unusual behavior. Even though the new type of behavior introduced by Gorbachev was legal, people felt that it was unusual due to the fact that it was wrong for most of their lives.

After the great amount of changes that people in the Soviet Union seen in a very short time, nuclear disaster at Chernobyl that occurred in 186, forced Gorbachev to allow even greater freedom of expression. Changes were so extreme, that government officials started to release political prisoners, who were in prison most of the time because they were against communist party; also emigration was becoming legal, people started to attacked corruption and it also encouraged the critical reexamination of the Soviet history. All of these things were allowed now, however before Gorbachev came in power, Soviet people were killed or put to jail if they were to commit any of those things that I have just listed.

Giving people more freedom was not the only good thing that Gorbachev did, he also worked on improving relationship between the Soviet Union and the United States. In a series of summit talks, which occurred from 185 to 188, Gorbachev started to develop positive relationship with U.S. President Ronald Reagan, with whom he signed and Intermediate Nuclear forces arms limitation treaty of 187, also know as INF. Gorbachev also brought back all the troops from Afghanistan, and put an end of the Soviet occupation of Afghanistan at the end of 18. Gorbachev was also awarded the 10 Nobel Peace Prize for his contribution to reducing the East-West tensions. However, by the end of 10, perestroika has failed to bring significant improvement in the economy that he has promised to the public. In addition the elimination of political and social control in the Baltic States allowed for leaders of Armenia, Georgia, Ukraine and Moldova to meet up and discuss the decisions that were made by Gorbachev. Those four republics, were joined by Yeltsin, organized a meeting and they have decided to chose a president for each republic, which made Yeltsin president of Russian Republic. Even though Yeltsin became president of Russian Republic, he was still run by Gorbachev, who was a president of the Soviet Union. Gorbachev was not pleased with that meeting, and since then there were always conflicts between Gorbachev and Yeltsin.

When it came time for reelection, Gorbachev who promised democratic elections, was elected as an executive president in March of 10, by a newly created in 18 congress of People's Deputies. He was did not let people elect him because of fear of loosing. And this is where in my opinion Gorbachev made his biggest mistake. Instead of letting people choosing him as a president, Congress of People's Deputies have chosen him. People expected a different election, and since Gorbachev has given people freedom of speech, now they could openly talk about it. Also, Gorbachev's perestroika was not showing much changes in Soviet Union's economy, which even further frustrated people. And angry people were not his only problem. People, who used to be part of the government before Gorbachev came along, were also unhappy.

Member of politburo, where Gorbachev was once a member of, were joined by heads of the Soviet military and the security services to form an organization called 'Committee of the State of Emergency'. They were extremely unhappy with all of the changes that Gorbachev has been making. During communism, all of the people who worked for the government were doing really well financially, and also Soviet people were taught to live by the rules that government made. And since Gorbachev came along, it was nothing but a headache for government officials, because they started loosing power, people who used to obey by the rules started questioning every move that a government official made and they were also unhappy about the relationship that Gorbachev was building with the United States, calling Gorbachev a trader and even were trying to start a conspiracy by suggesting that United States has paid Gorbachev to make the changes the he worked on throughout his years of presidency.

During 10 and 11, the members of politburo who could not get over all the changes that were made by Gorbachev held up the reform drive. Gorbachev was attempting to make peace with member of politburo, who were angry over what they called deterioration of the Soviet empire. Although Gorbachev has tried to make peace with them, his attempts were unsuccessful. So the day before signing ceremony for a new union treaty for the Union of Soviet Socialist Republic, Committee of the State of Emergency, has broken up the Congress of People's deputies, and went on to detain President Gorbachev at his villa in Crimea. Committee of the State of Emergency, claimed that Gorbachev had been removed from his position as president due to unsuspected illness. The leaders of the Committee of the State of Emergency formed an eight-man leader group, and attempted to assume control of the government. However their assumptions did not take into consideration Boris Yeltsin and the people of the Soviet Union.

Boris Yeltsin, who was a leader of parliamentarians expected for something like this to happen, and was trying to take advantage of it, that is why he had a meeting with leaders of Armenia, Gerogia, Ukraine and Moldova. Boris Yeltsin, and Russian Parliamentarians led popular resistance to the Committee's leadership. So Committee of the State of Emergency, on August 18th, sent tanks and soldiers to arrest Yeltsin. To their surprise, they found Russian Parliament building surrounded by both armed and unarmed civilians, supporting Boris Yeltsin. The soldiers did not know what to do, because they did not expect any resistance. So some of them went back, others went home, and others joined Yeltsin and his group. Many junior offices and officials in the Moscow ministries, as well as the leadership of the Soviet Union constituent republics, denounced the new leadership. The Committee of the State of Emergency collapsed, not only because they did not have legitimate authority, but also because they were trying to change things back the way they were before Gorbachev came along. Even though people were not ready to accept all of the changes that Gorbachev wanted to implement upon them, they knew one thing for sure; they did not want to go back to communism. While most of the changes that Gorbachev brought upon the Soviet people were hard to get used to, Soviet people really quickly adapted to freedom that was given to them, which allowed them to express their opinions about political and economic status of their country. And even though being able to talk about political problems have not changed things for better, now people could freely analyze things.

Second Revolution shows the development of collective behavior and how it proceeds from one stage to another. It started out with structural conduciveness, where physical and social conditions allow for development of collective behavior. Development of collective behavior was allowed because Gorbachev has given people new rules to live by, and although they were legal, due to the fact that people lived differently for over 8 decades, even when freedom was legal, it felt unusual to people. The second stage is structural strain, where sufficient number of people experience social strain. People of the Soviet Union lived their lives experiencing strain, because the government has always been really strict. The third step, is where participants accept similar beliefs which justify unusual behavior. Throughout Gorbachev's presidency people started to justify unusual behavior, because their president was telling them that it was normal to do so. So slowly people were getting used to the changes, although not quiet accepting yet.

The next step of collective behavior is mobilization of participants, where sufficient number of participants receives the necessary information. And that's when people of the Soviet Union received information that Gorbachev was not a president anymore and that things were going back to the way they were before Gorbachev came along. It caused people to get really angry; because they did not want to go back to they way it was before. People already were getting used to the freedom and being able to own a business. And that's where the last step in development of collective behavior takes place. The last step is social control, where social control agents fail or do not attempt to diffuse structural strain. And this is when Committee of the State of Emergency sent tanks and soldiers to arrest Yeltsin, however they run into hundredths of thousands of people who were not going to let them arrest Yeltsin. And control agents did not really do anything to stop those people, some of the agents even joined the people, who were protecting Yeltsin. So after completion of these five steps collective behavior is inevitable and will occur, which put an end to Committee of the State of Emergency and soon after that it put an end to the Soviet Union. The mistake that Committee made, was that they underestimated the power of people when they form a group.

Gorbachev was released after August Coup ended on August nd, 11. It only lasted four days, but it was enough to be remembered forever. However, when he came back to Moscow, Yeltsin was already in power. Yeltsin used the failure of the Committee of the State of Emergency to eliminate the political power of the Communist party of the Soviet Union. The August Coup shifted greater authority to the Russian Republic's president Boris Yeltsin. Gorbachev was trying to do everything he could in order to stay the president; he even dissolved the Communist party, granted the Baltic States independence and proposed a much looser, chiefly economic federation among the remaining republics. Unfortunately Gorbachev was too late. Even though his proposition sounded good, it could not compete with the other options that those republics had, if Yeltsin were to take over. The other problem that Gorbachev was facing is that he did not have anyone behind him for support. Since people did not elect him as a president, he had to get support from those who did elect him, but Congress of People's Deputies was broken up, meaning that Gorbachev did not have any support.

On December 8th, 11 a treaty signed at Minsk, Belarus established Community of Independent Nations by heads of the state of Russia, Belarus and Ukraine. And between December 8th and 1st, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan joined original signatories. Some other republics have joined later, however, they are still partially in control by Russia. So since December 1st, one country Soviet Union turned into 1 different countries. And Gorbachev was left as a president of Soviet Union, which did not even exist anymore. He did not have a government behind him, which made him just a regular person instead of a president. On December 5th, finally realizing that his position as a president did not have any support and simply did not exist anymore, he resigned. Since 1 Gorbachev headed international organizations, written several books and had an unsuccessful run for the President of Russian Republic.

In conclusion, this social movement has started due to the economical problems, to the lack of industrialization, political problems, which Gorbachev has tried to fix with perestroika. Gorbachev was supported by the Congress of People's Depute, not by people, and that is in my mind the biggest mistake he has made, because he did not risk to have a democratic election. Through his slogans of glasnost, novoya mishlenia, and democratie his was trying to start his reforms. Even though his slogans have helped him to start the reforms, they did not help him succeed. This social movement was supported by most of the countries; the only countries that did not support this were communist countries. This movement got people really interested in the idea of freedom and in the idea of being able to own a business, however people were not ready for a complete change. So the social movement failed. It failed for the same reasons that it started problems with economy, problems with politicians who could not accept the change and also because people could not completely change. Another reason why it ended was due to the fact that Gorbachev did not really know what he wanted himself. Although he realized that changes must be made soon, he kept going back and force trying to figure out what is it he really wants, whether he wanted to completely change to democracy or whether he wanted communism to succeed, those questions are still unanswered today. Since Gorbachev left his role as the President of the Soviet Union, things has only gotten worst. Yeltsin, who was a communist his whole life, all of the sudden wanted democracy. He never really understood what democracy meant, and throughout his presidency, he took his country through a lot of embarrassment.

Essay â€" Catcher in the Rye (#7)

Holden Caulfield is a disturbed sixteen-year-old boy. Following his beloved brother Allie’s death, his life has been going downhill. He fails school after school and his personal thoughts are extremely cynical. He doesn’t show interest in anything (or â€like anything as his sister Phoebe would say). However, he does care for a certain group of people children. He hates to see kids lose their innocence by entering the corrupted world of adults.

Holden’s love for kids is shown when he tells Phoebe his strange fantasy. He â€kept picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobodys around- nobody big… Im standing on the edge of some crazy cliff… I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff- I mean if theyre running and they dont look where theyre going I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. Id just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know its crazy, but thats the only thing Id really like to be. In other words, Holden wants to stop children from â€falling and losing their innocence. He wants to prevent the maturation of children.

Another example of Holden’s love for children is shown when he erases an obscene phrase from the walls of Phoebe’s elementary school. While I was sitting down, I saw something that drove me crazy. Somebodyd written … on the wall. It drove me damn near crazy. I thought how Phoebe and all the other little kids would see it…I kept wanting to kill whoeverd written it. I figured it was some perverty bum thatd sneaked in the school late at night to take a leak or something and then wrote it on the wall. Holden’s deep desire for the preservation of childhood innocence is illuminated in this incident.

In conclusion, it is safe to say Holden struggles with the fact that everyone has to grow up. His glorification of children, excessive love for Phoebe, extreme veneration for his deceased brother Allie and the feeling of elation he gets from reminiscing of his own childhood play major roles in his obsession of youth and innocence. When he realized that could not save children from â€falling, he has a nervous breakdown. Nevertheless, it is an inevitable fact that children have to grow up.

So it's about 0 in the morning, a good chunk of the rest of the world is grinding away with their REM's, but your face is awash in the icy, electronic gleam of a computer monitor. A sweet chill of friskiness seductively squirms its way down your midsection. Sex, as you know it, bores the living hell out of you. It was ecstasy-inducing and invigorating back in your teen years, when it was still bright, shiny, and new.

But since then the luster has dimmed. And you need an extra jolt of pizzazz, a nice kick in the pants (perhaps in more ways than one) to your sex life. It's time to explore your own sexual quirkiness, and venture head on into the uncharted recesses of your sexual appetite. You decide an apt starting point would be the informational well offered by the internet, and you search "festishes" on Yahoo, surprised by the sub-categories under "fetishes," each pointing you do to developed subcultures concerning their respective fetish. There's fetishes that apply sexual connotation to everything from robots (and particularly "fembots," which much like male fantasies over lesbians, most likely lends itself to revealing the commonly held desire among men for women to function as sexual service droids), to macrophilia, which on the male-aimed side of the spectrum presents impossibly gigantic women (disbelief suspended by clever angling and splicing of other pictures of proportionally minute men), aptly called giantesses, in a pretty unique blend of women worship and stomp-happy sadomasochism. With fetishes applied to things as ostensibly mundane as headphones, there's hope for you yet, you fetish hunting swashbuckler! Which immediately opens up a question why would anyone be turned on by wearing diapers??

Kink can be infused into anything that can be classified as a "household object," or really, just "object." Cited in Valerie Steele's Fetish Fashion, Sex and Power, the Cornell professor's examination of impact the fetish dented in both pop culture and social systems, is nineteenth century sexologist Richard Von Krafft-Ebing's textbook definition of fetishism as "The Association of Lust with the Idea of Certain Portions of the Female Person, or with Certain Articles of Female Attire." Ebing continues, declaring that the pathologizing of a fetish occurs when the object or body part becomes the focus of the sexual attraction, instead of the person. Steele updates this notion, spreading it across a four-level continuum (from a slight preference for the object or body part, to a strong preference for the object or body part, to the necessity of "specific stimuli" in order to perform sexually, and finally, at the highest level, the stimuli replaces the sex partner).

Cheap Custom Essays on Fembots! Furs! And Feet! Oh, Why?: Fetishes and What Might Lie Behind Them

Having been observing reams of pornography, Steele finds it "amazing what turns people on everything from Amputee Times to Wanda Whips Wall Street." And her research tells her that "neither 'pathological' fetishism nor 'normal' fetishizing is typical of women." So men, predominantly, are the ones masturbating over fur pieces or organically sewn afghans. In pondering the origins of fetishes within males, Steele references Freud's standpoint on fetishes. Freud contested that in order to deal with crushing blow that their mothers were aphallic, phallic substitutes, like the heels in high heel shoes, become sexually relevant to the child. While, taking in consideration that Freud's theory might very well have hit the nail on the head, Steele considers its fallibility just as much, offering other sociologically or biologically slanted points of origin, humbly restraining herself from claiming to know, fully, the origin of fetishes.

Although certainly informative, objective, literate, and humanistic, an academic text like Steele's might not be the greatest launching pad for learning about a topic like fetishism, that has such a loaded capacity to alienate people. Anita Phillips's Defense of Masochism is a plea to automatically associate those with masochistic personalities (hypersensitivity, frequently fantasizes about being raped or beaten, etc.) with the collective S&M torture chamber perceptions, carved by Venus in Furs and Marquis de Sade, and popularized by Lou Reed and European leather fashion, and assumed to be perverse. Phillip's asserts that S&M is a "binary dualism," that appears to be attractively user friendly, when it comes to linking one person whose temperament causes them to want to cause pain, and another who's temperament yeans to receive it. "You might seek out somebody to embody all the things that seem bigger than you, that seem worth worshipping," Phillip writes, in explaining possible motivations behind masochistic tendencies. "You might have a wish to sense, from time to time, how small and insignificant you are," drawing parallels between masochism and the aforementioned macrophilia, and even nudging the existential, the quasi-religious, and the mystical.

Even more…working class, I suppose, is the FAQ of usenet group Alt.sex.fetish.feet, where those who get off from the ankle down have a cyber-community, in which they maintain a common sexual ground where one could relate to others when it comes to their fetish and explore their sexuality on a deeper, more interactive level, a benefit foot-fetishists, having a highly specific fetish, don't expect to reap very often. In answering "What 'causes' someone to be a foot fetishist?" the FAQ, presumably written by a foot-fetishist, to be "personally not sure" on what the direct impeteus is for the fetish's nascence, if there is even an impetus at all. Although, behavioral approach to psychology appeals to him as the most feasible, given that he noticed his fetish emerge around the age of 4.

As far as viewpoints that are less-than warm towards fetishes, many organizations, namely the Family Research Council, an organization of the religious right dedicated to sniffing out the heretical to keep the pious and pure of heart well informed,

often lump fetishistic activities like sadomasochism with homosexuality, but only to shroud same-gender sexuality in a cartoonily forbidding and deviant murkiness. Not many sources are available concerning the religious right's attitude on fetishes. Although, keeping in mind their crusades against the corrupting spiritual infestation of actually being honest about homosexual desires, the expected response from the religious right concerning some of the fetishes discussed in this essay would probably range from subconscious imagery of a to full-fledged apocalyptic visions.

Just being a citizen in present day America validates the observation that fetishism, in its quirkiest, oddest manifestations, is probably not something most non-fetishistic people would welcome with open arms. It can seem disturbing and alienating, as a display of stark, honest-to-goodness humanity such as fetishes, might shatter the fragile, ideal images one had of his species. And although we may never fully unearth the hidden gem of information that points to the truth of fetishistic origins, facing the mystery square in the eyes is all we really need to do right now.

Personal Interest Paper

"Life with Autism"

Toinette Thibodaux-Matthews

Autism is a mental disorder that I experience and explore on a daily basis. There are variety of symptoms and causes, which made it extremely hard to determine if this was truly a factor in my son's developmental delay. For the first two to three years, no noticeable signs in my son's behavior or social abilities lead me to believe something was wrong. In the later years, speech delay is what initiated the first visit to neurologist.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Autism

Neurologists are one of the health care professionals who use a rating scale that observes and evaluates the child's language and social behavior between the ages of five and seven. They perform interviews with concern parents who believe their child may have some form of autism. Both the doctor and parents discuss early childhood development buy viewing home videos and photo albums. This helps determine how and when the possible developmental delay began.

Autism, a developmental disability that affects verbal and non-verbal communication and social interaction, generally shows symptoms before age three that adversely affects educational performance. Other characteristics often associated with autism are engagement with repetitive activities, stereotype movements, and resistance to environmental change. This life long disorder interferes with the ability to understand what is hearing, seen and touched. The degree of impairment varies from each individual. There is a full spectrum of symptom ranging from mild to serve. Some of the more profound problems with social interactions are the most common symptoms of autism. They tend to avoid eye contact and show a disinterest in physical contact such as resistance to being cuddled, rising of arms, rhythmic rocking, flapping of arms, and crying without tears. Sensory problems are also associated with this mental disorder.

Autistic children may ignore objects or become obsessed with them, continually watching the object or the movement of their fingers over it. Language can be another obstacle, some children may not speak at all, and however those that do often speak in single word and may endlessly repeat words or phrases. Contrary to popular belief, many children with autism pose very little of the most serve symptoms. They show affection, smile, laugh, and demonstrate a variety of emotions. Like many other children they respond to their environment in both positive and negative ways. Autism may affect the child's range of responses and make it somewhat difficult to control body movement and the way their minds react. But every child with autism is an individual and all have a unique personality and combination of characteristics. They process and respond to information in different ways. Their abilities fluctuate from day to day depending on the amount of anxiety and processing of information. They may learn one day and not the next. Also they may have extraordinary abilities in one or more areas. Such children are known as idiot savants and are considered to be geniuses.

There are alternative treatments and effective approaches to help children with autism to reach their fullest potential. Due to the fact, there are no single medications yet proven highly effective, there are various educational resources, vitamins, enrich drugs, and exercises available.

While the prognosis is not clear because there is no cure, many children can eventually become more responsive as they learn to understand the world around them. Prevention is not possible until the cause of autism is discovered.

There are several litigations currently in process involving the ever so popular vaccine (MMR). Thimerosal was used as a preservative in this vaccine to prevent bacteria and fungal contamination. Thimerosal contains mercury, a toxic metal that can cause sensory, immune, neurological, motor and behavioral dysfunctions, including autism. Autism is now the third most common child developmental disorder. The link between thimersal and autism are currently the subject of researchers.

Although my son has been diagnosis as not having classical autism, he exhibits signs and is considered to have clinical features of autism. Overall my son and I have our good and bad days. Unfortunately, we don't communicate verbally, but truly understand each other. This learning disability can be quite emotional in both the parent and child's life, but I will continue my quest in providing the very best environment and treatment for my son's development.

The Eye

Most animals have light sensitive organs of some description these are generally classed as eyes. The eye takes many forms ranging from the simplest ones which are commonly found in invertebrates, which only consist of light sensitive cells on the surface of the body, to compound eyes which can see movement and finally to the most complex, the human eye, capable of forming complex images continuously.

The human eye consists of three main layers

The scelera and cornea-the outer protective white coating of the eye

Cheap Custom Essays on The Human Eye

The uveal tract and choroid-the middle layer, which contains blood vessels that nourish the eye. It also contains the iris and the ciliray body.

And The Retina the inner layer, which contains the nerves responsible for transmitting visual information to the brain for seeing.

The sclera and cornea give the eye protection and strength. The sclera covers five-sixths the eye and the cornea covers the rest. The scelera is the white part of the eye. It has the feel and strength of soft leather. The cornea is a transparent film that lays over the coloured part of the eye. This layer as a whole does not contain any blood vessels. The lens bends light into the retina

The uveal tract is the middle part of the eye. It has parts (from front to back these are) the iris, the ciliray body and the choroid.

The iris is the coloured disk that lies behind the cornea. Its colour comes from melanin, the substance that gives skin it's colour, for example blue eyes have less melanin than brown eyes. Melanin also absorbs some light that would otherwise cause blurred vision. The pupil is the centre of the iris, by using two muscles, the dialater and the sphincter; the pupil becomes larger to lets more light in when it's dark and smaller when it is bright. This enables us to see in a range of brightness's.

The ciliray body is mainly in charge of focusing. The ciliary body works in conjunction with the lens to bend light into the retina. It relaxes the lens to look at distant objects and contracts to see close up objects. This method changes the way the light rays are bent so as the light rays are always coming to a point on the retina. This is because close objects will project light at extreme angles and far objects rays come onto the eye near parallel.

The choriod is in charge of nourishment of the eye. It contains the bulk of the blood vessels that oxygenate the eye. It also includes the anterior chamber, which contains aqueous humor, which nourishes the lens and maintains the correct eyeball pressure. The back of the eye is filled with vitreous humor a transparent gel that assists ray bending and pressure maintenance.

The retina is the inner most layer of the eye. It contains two types of light sensitive cells, cones and rods. Cones are responsible for sharp vision while rods are responsible for night vision and peripheral vision. Rods contain a pigment called rhodopsin or visual purple; this pigment enables us to see shades of grey and to see in dim light, it is very sensitive to light. Cones contain three pigments, cyanol Abe, which absorbs blue light, chloral Abe, which absorbs green light and finally erythrol Abe, which absorbs red light. These pigments enable us to distinguish more than 00 colours.

The centre of the retina contains only cones. This area is referred to as the macula and it gives the most defined and clear vision possible, especially in bright light. The rest of the retina is for peripheral vision. At night time you may be able to see objects better out of the side of your eye than direct as the side has rods which are much more sensitive to light.

Animal eyes are basically the same design as human eyes but in general much simpler.

Eyespots, such as those belonging to flatworms, consist of nothing but a clump of rods surrounded by a lens and protective liquids, flatworms can only see changes in light and dark and they commonly cannot move their eyes, they are fixed to a spot.

A compound eye, such as those of praying mantises, is not all that different to the vision that the human eye gives. Unlike the compound eyes shown, the images all form one. Each "eye" of the compound eye has it's own cornea and cones in this instance the cone actually helps to act as a lens. Each one of these small eyes are only capable of seeing one image. All these images are then merged into one in the brain to give the complete image. The advantage of the compound eye is that it usually gives a much larger field of vision than that of a human, for example a crab can see 180 degrees around it.

Light spots are very much like eyespots except simpler, only containing very few rods, they can only see very intense lights. The simplicity of the eye gives it the advantage of reacting extremely fast to light.

Theme

Setting

Style The novel is written from a 1st person perspective this is done because the writer of this novel tries to go into as much detail as possible of the characters actions and situations .The story is only seen from two characters perspectives Dr Frankenstein and his creation the choice of which of these characters the story is being told from doesn't make to much of a difference but it was good to see the story from the creations point of view even though he learned to understand human language very quickly from just observing them talk and read etc.

This novel is mostly prose but also contains a series of letters

I think this novel

Summary I didn't really like this novel because it used lots of "complicated" words which even though I understood most of them I found to be really annoying as there are words which could be used instead and would make much more sense and wouldn't take you as long to read. I also didn't like this novel because it was sort of a auto biography which was pretty boring at some parts especially at the start it's very slow to get going anywhere the book is always mentioning, in extreme detail, irrelevant objects or purposeless actions of the characters. For instance; they are walking awkwardly. After reading scores of pages like this, the reader gets bored out of his/her brains .Also, only twice during the entire book is the story even somewhat suspenseful. And only once is there any action, and that didnt come until late in the story .However the words were probably as they are because of the time period of which this book was originally written. I would recommend this novel to older people probably age 18+ as I don't really think that it would appeal to younger people. I would give this novel a rating of 7.5/10.

Why Men Pee Standing Up

Seems God was just about done with creating the universe but he had two extra things left over in his bag so he decided to split them between Adam and Eve.

He told them that one of the things he had left was a thing that would allow the owner to pee while standing up. Its a very handy thing, God told them, and I was wondering if either one of you would like that.

Well, Adam jumped up and down and begged Oh, give that to me! Id love to be able to do that. It seems just the sort of thing a man should be able to do. Please. Please! Pleeease! Give it to me. On and on he went like an excited little boy.

So Eve just smiled and told God that if Adam really wanted it so badly, he should have it. So God gave Adam the thing that allowed him to pee while standing up and he was so excited. He whizzed on the bark of a tree and then went off to write his name in the sand, laughing with delight all the while.

God and Eve watched him for a moment and then God said to Eve, Well, heres the other thing and I guess you can have it. Whats it called? Eve asked.

Brains, God said.

Write my Essay on Emily Grierson

Emily Grierson

Faulkner¡¯s A Rose for Emily is told from the viewpoint of a resident of Jefferson. The story portraits Emily, the daughter of a south Grierson family as a cruel, and revengeful lady. Emily is a character living in the transitional period of the south .£¨Daniel£On the one hand; she refuses to acknowledge her loved one¡¯s death and holds on her tax exempt status. Yet, as a victim of the old patriarchy, she ignores the old social norms by falling in love with a Yankee. Her attempt to retain Homer while living in the past world is the reflection of such a contradictory character. However, Emilys love with Homer is doomed to be a failure because her body and soul are full of dust while Homer is such a candid, unfettered and uncultivated person. Her inability to reconcile these conflicts of her character eventually leads to the murder of Homer and her retreat to the world of past.

Emily is the advocator of the old system. She refuses to acknowledge her loved one¡¯s death and holds on her tax exempt status. After her fathers death, people come to offer aid and condolence(Faulkner 41). However, Emily is not in a grief(Faulkner 41). She told them that her father was not dead. She did that for three days¡ (Faulkner 41). Her refusal to accept the reality of her fathers death is an example of Emilys fear of the pass of time. For Emily, her father means everything. He is the only company in her lonely world. He turns away every suitor of hers, leaving nothing except the big house to her after his death. Emilys strong dependence on her father may be the reason why she would cling to that which had robbed her(Faulkner 41). For her lover Homer, Emily sleeps with his corpse for forty years. ¡°The scene of decay in Homers ¡®tomb¡¯ is a symbol of Emilys refusal to move on¡±. (Symbolism in¡± A Rose for Emily¡±, http//www.essaybank.co.uk/) Besides, she declares that she had no taxes in Jefferson, basing on an agreement made with Colonel Sartoris, who had been dead for ten years. (Celia Rodriguez, An analysis of A Rose for Emily, www.cwrl.utexas,edu/ )Just as Emily refuses to acknowledge the death of her father, she refuses to recognize the death of Colonel Sartoris.

Nevertheless, dominated by her father¡¯s rule, Emily has the courage to fight against the old patriarchy and ignores the traditional marriage virtues by openly falling in love with a Yankee, Homer Barron. During his lifetime, Emilys father treats her as a horse(Faulkner 41). In a picture, Emily is an innocent girl with a slender figure in white in the background(Faulkner 41) while her father a spraddled silhouette in the foreground clutched a horsewhip¡± (Faulkner 41). Her father controls her life. Not surprisingly, Emily found a boyfriend-a Yankee immediately after her fathers death. However, in the southerners¡¯ eyes, Emily is fallen(Faulkner 4), because she sets a bad example to the young people(Faulkner 4). They want her to conform to their vision of the last Grierson(Faulkner 4), thus the Baptist minister is sent to persuade Emily. When it fails, the ministers wife writes to Emilys relations in Alabama, asking them to interfere (Faulkner 4). Despite her townspeople accusation, Emily doesnt yield to them. She carried her head high enough(Faulkner 4).She goes out with Homer in a yellow-wheeled buggy on Sunday afternoon; she buys jewelry and mans toilet set, (Faulkner 4), preparing to marry him. Thwarted her womans life(Faulkner 4) by her father, she is determined to justify her love.

Emilys contradictory character is also hinted in her hostile attitudes towards the new city authorities and the druggist. When the deputation come to her for taxes, she answers them in a dry and cold voice (Faulkner ), Perhaps he considers himself the sheriff¡I have no taxes in Jefferson(Faulkner ). In her mind, Colonel Sartoris is still her sheriff despite his death for ten year. This again reflects her unwillingness to acknowledge the changing of time. (Liu 116)However, inside her, she has contempt of old laws and orders. When she buys drugs, she does not want to explain for what purpose she wants arsenic.¡but the law requires you to tell what you are going to use it for (Faulkner 4). Emily just stared at him, her head tilted back in order to look him eye for eye, until he looked away and went and got the arsenic and wrapped it up.(Faulkner 4) She ignores the laws, convincing the druggist to sell the poison without asking more additional questions.

Emilys attempt to retain Homer while living in the world of past is the reflection of her contradictory character. In her townspeople eyes, as the last Grierson, Emily should not degrade herself to be in love with such an uncultivated Yankee (Liu 118), who cocked a cigar in his teeth, reins and whip in a yellow glove.(Faulkner 4) Homer has succeeded in seducing Emily. However, he might actually have been a homosexual. (Jonathan Love, A Rose for Emily or something more?,www.essaymill.com ) Homer himself had remarked- he liked men, and it was known that he drank with the younger men in the Elks Club - that was not a marrying man(Faulkner 4). When she is threatened with ¡°desertion and disgrace¡± (Celia Rodriguez, An analysis of A Rose for Emily, www.cwrl.utexas,edu/), she kills him in order to remain together with Homer as if they were a married couple. Emilys concept is deeply rooted in the old aristocratic society. She demanded more than ever the recognition of her dignity as the last Grieson(Faulkner 4) she expects the townspeople to respect her love. If she had allowed homer to leave her, the town would pity her even more, which is the most unwanted. (Liu 10) She tries to maintain her dignity and social status in the old society, at the same time, she wants Homers love. These conflicts reflect the contradictory of her character.

Emilys love with Homer is doomed to a failure because her house, her body and soul are full of dust while Homer is such a candid, unfettered and uncultivated person. Emilys house is a big, squarish frame one with the style of the seventies, it lifts its stubborn and coquettish decay above the cotton wagons and the gasoline pumps--an eyesore among eyesores (Faulkner 8), which represents Emilys conformism. Moreover, her house smells of dust and has a dank smell. The leather of her furniture was cracked(Faulkner 8) and the faint dust rose sluggishly, spinning with slow motes(Faulkner 8). Her body seems unhealthy. She looked bloated like a body long submerged in motionless water and of that palled hue(Faulkner ) she is obesity(Faulkner ). Her pale face seems lacking of sunlight. For forty years, she confines herself in the houses. Her mind is vacant except the past memory. Different from her, Homer is such an energetic, candid, unfettered person. He cusses (Faulkner 41) the nigger in a big voice(Faulkner 41), he is in the center of people whenever you heard a lot of laughing, (Faulkner 41) He drives Emily in a yellow-wheeled buggy and he cocks his hat, reins and whips in a yellow glove with a cigar in his teeth.(Faulkner 4). The conservative of Emily and the liberal of Homer eventually results in the failure of their love.

Emilys inability to reconcile these conflicts of her character leads to the murder of Homer and her retreat to the world of past. For the townspeople, Emily is an object of gossip, her love with Homer is usually of their concern. Homer fills a vacancy at her soul, but he betrays her. (Liu 1) ¡°When she was threatened with desertion and disgrace, she took Homer with her in the only manner possible--death. (Celia Rodriguez, An analysis of A Rose for Emily, www.cwrl.utexas,edu/) Then she slept with his corpse for forty years. When people break into her locked room, ¡°they find Homer¡¯s skeletal body on a sumptuous bed, with Emilys iron-gray hair lying on the pillow beside his head.¡± (Karen Bernardo, William Faulkners A Rose For Emily, http//www.storybites.com/index.html) The conflict of her affection for Homer, his disgrace to her love and her attempt to maintain her dignity cause her to commit the murder. Then she retreated into her rose-tinted(Faulkner 45) world of the past and seldom went out. For Emily, death takes away her father, the sole protector of her lonely world, which is already a big shock. Homer¡¯s disgrace to her love makes her become despair to life. Finally, she cuts her tie with the society, retreats to her little world and regardless any changes in the society.

Emily is a monument (Faulkner 8) of the south. She characterizes the whole of southern society at that time. Her ideas and values are deeply rooted in the past, which symbolize the denying changes of customs and the passing of time in the south.(Liu ) Whereas, Emilys pursuing of free love, the introduction of machinery for road construction marked the transition of the south from the conservative to the liberal. (Daniel). However, in the end, ¡°death conquers all¡± (Celia). This indicates that the adherence to outdated world will have no way out.

Shell in Nigeria Critique

The Ogoni Situation of the Shell in Nigeria case is the one aspect of the joint venture that thoroughly intrigued me. Taking into consideration Ogoniland is only a small part of Nigeria as a whole; shell should have implemented a program from the beginning to help the Ogoni natives economically and physically. Instead of Ogoni people starting the Movement for the survival of Ogoni people (MOSOP), Shell should have started the program, which I think would have caused the company to be viewed as a company for the people of Ogoniland and not their natural resources. The implementation of a program may have prevented some of the destruction from Ogoni natives on Shell Company. In business there is an acronym NYMBY that stands for Not In My Back Yard. Before allowing business to occur in Nigeria, Shell should have researched and determined the best place to obtain oil without disrupting the people of the land. Since oil is a natural resource that is ascribed to the land certain areas of Nigeria were not accessible to obtain oil and thus were not considered as possible oil land field locations.

The organizer of MOSOP, Saro Wiwa was doing somewhat of a justice for his people. Although he promoted violence as a cure to the injustices bestowed upon the Ogoni people he was fighting for the better good of Ogoniland. The overall message of Wiwa is worth noting because his intentions were to allow Ogoni people compensation for the many problems associated with retracting oil from the native land. The violence Wiwa inhibited on shell is by no means understandable as a method to cure the problem, however the government should not have killed him. Perhaps this is a direct representation of the different culture norms prescribed in our country and Nigeria. Just as the text says, if Shell had a more active role in pleading for the lives of Wiwa and his associates they would not have been killed. I do believe that Shell has an loud voice in terms of determining the land used for oil retraction and should thus speak loud when certain acts arise. Shell plays a major part in the actions positive and negative placed upon their company therefore they should seek to maximize happiness from both sides of the people and government.
