Nachtwey never received any formal training in the field of photography; rather, he taught himself the skill while working on ships in the Merchant Marine. He also was an apprentice news film editor and a truck driver, where he furthered his knowledge of photography. His first job in the field came in 176, when Nachtwey moved to New Mexico to begin work as a newspaper photographer. After becoming well acquainted with the world of photography, Nachtwey headed for the Big Apple in 180. In New York, he was hired as a freelance magazine photographer, where he was sent to photograph the conflict in Northern Ireland, which was going on during the early 180's. Since 181, Nacthwey has also covered events in South Korea, Thailand, Sri Lanka, South Africa, El Salvador, Lebanon, Indonesia, Nicaragua, Brazil, the West Bank and Gaza, and Afghanistan. He has spent lots of time in recent years in those last two places, documenting the ongoing conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis, as well as the War in Afghanistan following September 11.

In addition to his numerous awards, Nachtwey is a member of the Royal Photographic Society and retains an Honorary Doctorate of Fine Arts, courtesy of the Massachusetts College of Arts. And, in March of 00, Nachtwey was awarded the Dan David Prize for Present Time Dimension/Print & Electronic Media, an honor he shared with Frederick Wiseman. The annual award gives $1 million to someone who has made an outstanding scientific, technological, cultural, or social impact on our world. Each year fields are chosen within Three Dimensions Past, Present, and Future.

Along with "Inferno," Nachtwey published Deeds of War, which is now out of print, in 18, and his photo essays for Time are regularly make headlines, especially the essay that was put together compiled of photos from September 11. Nachtwey was also the subject of the film War Photographer with Christian Frei in 00.

CHAPTER XI A YEAR PASSED. The seasons came & went, the short animal lives fled by. A time when no one remembered the old days before the rebellion, except Clover, Benjamin, Moses the raven and a number of pigs. One day in early summer, the animals woke to the sound of a loud explosion from the Truman Farm. Which, in the past Napoleon, had forbid the animals to have any contact with. The animals ran out to see what had happened, there was a big black cloud looming above the farmhouse, it was on fire, the animals were all wondering what had happened. Napoleon appeared, raising his trotter for silence, he said we have been woken an hour early, with all this commotion we will have no chance of more rest, so we will start working now. I will get dressed then I will go to the Truman Farm to determine what has happened. The animals were scared, Napoleon and Squealer had always cautioned them about the Truman Farm, and they did not know why they were not to go there, they just knew they shouldnt, but the reason couldnt be too serious because the farm had only been built about a year ago. Clover said What is happening Benjamin, what is that smoke? And what is Napoleon going to do? No one has ever ventured to the Truman Farm before. Benjamin replied, that is a Great Fire Clover, the animals will not be safe there. Fortunately, we have not had the anguish of a Great Fire in our life times. Squealer once told us Great Fires travel to farms where the animals do not do enough work, they kill everything that gets in their way, and they wreck the crops and barns as well. There was a Great Fire right here at the Manor Farm about two years before I was born. And as for Napoleon, he is the leader he does what he wants, when he wants. Squealer ordered the animals to work straight away. Napoleon returned wearing a suit, a top hat and carrying a cane. He was so fat he could scarcely walk. He walked out of the Manor Farm gate, slowly making his way to the Truman Farm. It was only two hundred metres down the road, but it took Napoleon ten minutes to get there, after all pigs arent quite familiarized to bipedal walking. On arrival, Napoleon inspected the blazing buildings from the gate; he decided it was too risky to enter through the front gate, so he trekked to the side gate. As he was entering something caught his eye. It was the farmer rounding up the animals, shooting his gun at the ground next to them. He finally got most of the animals into a small fenced in area, then he ran to the hose and tried to control the fire. He was not doing much good though. Napoleon approached the farmer, you should wet the ground and crops around the barn, and the fire will then burn out. The farmer looked around he was stunned, youre…youre a pig, yes, Napoleon replied. But your wearing clothes, and your walking, and, and, and talking, Napoleon reminded the farmer about the fire; quick wet the ground before the fire spreads. The farmer did as Napoleon said. When the fire finally burnt out the farmer proceeded towards Napoleon. Where are you from?, Napoleon explained that he was from down the road, at the Manor Farm and also about what had happened with Mr. Jones. I am now the owner of the farm, the other animals abide by my rules and work the crops. I teach the younger pigs and do all the farms paper work. The farmer was astonished, he had never seen a pig walk, let alone speak with such intelligence. Napoleon asked if he could see the animals, the farmer took him towards the fenced in area, where the scared animals were waiting. Napoleon talked to the animals, and to the farmers disbelief his animals talked back. Napoleon noticed one pig in particular who was extremely intellectual. The farmer invited Napoleon inside for coffee; they talked for hours about the revolution. He asked many questions, so he could establish exactly what happened. Napoleon finally arrived back at the Manor Farm, all the animals rushed to the gate to greet him. They were all asking what happened, and what it was like at the Truman Farm. All Napoleon said was all restrictions on having no contact with the Truman Farm have been lifted. As he walked towards the farmhouse, Squealer yelled, Ok, back to work. The next day, Napoleon sent a group of animals over to the Truman farm, they were to stay there for a week to help rebuild the barn. Muriel, Clover and Benjamin were among those who went. A week passed the barn had been rebuilt and the animals returned home and started their normal work again. After a long day of work the animals finally came into the barn to collect their rations, each of the smaller animals received a quarter of an ear of corn and a tiny portion of grain. The larger animals received half an ear of corn and half an apple. The pigs on the other hand received an ear of corn, an apple, some grain and a glass of beer. Muriel said to Squealer and the other animals Im certain we used to get more food than this, and we also used to work shorter hours when Mr. Jones was around. There was uproar Dont mention that name ever again said Napoleon, who then left to eat his dinner in the comfort of the farmhouse. Squealer rose in front of the crowd of animals, We do receive as much food as we used to, we just have to work a little bit harder for a while then we will probably be able to stop work altogether. Muriel said, When we were at the Truman Farm we worked shorter hours and received more food, Squealer tried to make an excuse for the animals receiving less food than they used to, Ok, we dont get as much food as we used to, but that is because we are trying to save money so we can get new machinery, so in the future we only have to work from eight till three instead of five until six. Wait a minute you said we wouldnt have to work ever again, if we ate less for a while. YOU LIAR said Benjamin. All the animals started to shout at Squealer. Dont yell at me its Napoleons fault yelped Squealer. The next night, all the animals apart from Squealer and Napoleon, where called for a secret meeting in the barn at midnight. Benjamin and Clover addressed the crowd of animals, COMRADES, NAPOLEON IS A LIAR. Dear Comrades, our leader Napoleon has turned against us, we are working more and more and eating less and less. Im sorry to say this, but comrade Napoleon is turning into another Mr. Jones. He is controlling our lives, ordering us around not abiding to the rules; Napoleon changed the rules at his leisure, when it suited him. Comrade Napoleon is not alone in this he has an assistant, Squealer. Squealer has been telling us lies ever since Napoleon has been leader. They are working us hard so they can reap the benefits. We have to get rid of them, but this time we will be fair. Once again All Animals will be EQUAL. We will not have a single leader we will have a committee of representatives, Any Questions? When will we take over? ask the sheep, Tomorrow afternoon just before dinner, so we must stay up and plan tonight. What will we gain out of this; ask the pigs Clover Replied, All animals will be equal! Every animal will get his say, we will get more food, and have shorter working hours where every one helps and does their fair share. All the animals cheered, the whole night was spent planning The Battle of the Cowshed, Again. The next morning the animals rose as usual, Napoleon said everyone to work at once. They were all uneasy, you could smell fear in the air, though Napoleon did not notice anything unusual. When the working day was over, the animals had five minutes until dinner, and they assembled in their positions. Napoleon and Squealer strolled towards the barn at 6 right on time as usual. The moment came, the signal went, first the pigeons flew above Napoleon and Squealer and dropped their dung, they swooped to and fro, while this was happening the ducks and geese ran out and pecked fiercely at them, the other pigs charged at them, then all the sheep, goats and cows head butted them. To finish things off, the horses came out kicking, powerful kicks with their hind legs. Squealer got a fatal kick to the head. Napoleon was using his last ounce of strength to break free, when Benjamin grabbed Joness shotgun and fired it. The first bullet hit Napoleon in the side, he fell to the floor, Motionless, the animals gathered round and scorned at Napoleon. They did not know whether to let him die in pain or put him out of his misery, one of the sheep bleated four legs good, two legs bad. BANG, the bullet hit Napoleon right between the eyes. The Animals gathered in the barn, Benjamin, said we are now Free, the animals cheered, even the pigs. We will now vote for our committee of representatives. There shall be one representative for each species of animal. The votes had been counted and the representatives chosen, the Board of Representatives was having its first official meeting. Everyone was so happy with how the, Battle of the Cowshed, Again had turned out they had a huge party. At the party Benjamin made a speech, I remember every detail of my long life, I thought things never had been, nor ever could be much better. Hunger, hardship, and disappointment. That I thought, was the unalterable law of life, as it turns out my whole life, I have been

¡°Those who survived into the decade of the 10¡¯s perceived their lives as being neatly divided into a before, a during, and an after categories most of them equated with the stages of life known as youth, young manhood, and maturity¡± (Wohl). Whenever people read and hear about World War I, they hear of the struggles and triumphs of the nations and the other Allies except Germany. However, All Quiet on the Western Front gives the reader a look at a group of German soldiers who are fighting in the war and how they become the lost generation. Paul and his friends also enter the war at that time. They want peace and they want to return home to their normal lives but they have no idea of what to do when the war is over. They have to disconnect themselves from their feelings in order to survive. As they go through the war, they are totally changed from innocent boys into men. Finally they become the lost generation. Throughout Erich Maria Remarque¡¯s All Quiet on the Western Front, Paul and his comrades define the lost generation through their lives, thoughts, and emotions.

The war affects their lives and damages their humanity. As Paul says, ¡°We are cut off front activity from striving from progress. We believe in such things no longer. We believe in the war¡± (Remarque 88). Paul becomes unable to imagine a future without the war and unable to remember how he felt in the past. They cannot believe in anything except the war. It is because they have no experiences as adults, so they have no plan for the future which requires hope; trench warfare does not allow them to have hope for anything other than survival. ¡°There are hundred and twenty wounded men lying somewhere or other; it is a damnable business, but what was it to do with us now- we live¡± (Remarque 1). They are forced to deal with the frequent deaths of their close friends and comrades. But they no longer pause to mourn dead friends and comrades. Because as they go through the war, they lose such humanity. The only way for soldiers to survive is to accept the conditions of their lives.

Paul and his comrades cannot think of anything other than the war. When Paul arrives at home he murmurs, ¡°You are at home, you are at home. But a sense of strangeness will not leave me. I cannot feel at home amongst these things.¡± (Remarque 160). Although he is at home, he feels uncomfortable and even regrets having come home. He cannot bear the gap between him and his family. His identity as a soldier is the only thing to care about because he cannot belong to this society anymore. His home is the front. Paul regrets by saying, ¡°Why do they never tell us that you are poor devils like us, that your mothers are just as anxious as ours, and that we have the same fear of death, and the same dying and the same agony- forgive my comrade, how could you be my enemy?¡± (Remarque ). When an enemy soldier jumps into the shell hole with Paul, Paul quickly stabs him. After a while, he realizes that the enemy soldier is not his enemy anymore because they are the same poor men under the similar conditions. He feels so guilty for taking the French soldier¡¯s life. Because it is the first time that Paul kills someone in hand-to-hand combat, he is in pure agony. But he decides not to be sentimental for his survival. It is kill or be killed.

The emotional disconnection has a destructive impact on the soldiers humanity. Tjaden yelled out with delight, ¡°What a bean-feast! That¡¯s all for us! Each man gets--wait a bit--yes, practically two issues.¡± (Remarque 5). Eight men out of one hundred and fifty-five returned to the front. The cook¡¯s main concern is whether he should serve out the rations for the remaining survivors. Also, These survivors are more concerned with whether they will receive enough food than with the death of their friends. As the reader can see, they become apathetic, which is the result of the war. They are just happy about getting twice as much food and rations. Paul says, ¡°My mother has always been sickly; and though she has only gone to the hospital when she has been compelled to. It had cost a great deal of money and my father¡¯s life has been practically given up to it.¡± (Remarque 16). Paul is not sad about his mom¡¯s cancer but he is more concerned with money. Paul is not even afraid of her death because he knows that everyone dies someday. Paul just considers his mom¡¯s death as one of these cases. The war makes him so indifferent and impossible for him to confront his feelings of fear and grief about everything.

As they grow up on the front, their thoughts are limited to war. They are not allow to feel and believe in anything at all besides the war. This novel focuses on the effects of war on the humanity of soldiers, the horror of war and the fear of death through the characters¡® living. SIVMED's estimated weighted average cost of capital includes the following capital components cost of debt (kd), cost of common stock (kcs) and cost of preferred stock (kps). In computation of WACC the values should be after-tax because for instance the interest paid to obtain debt is tax deductible. For a firm that encountered losses the tax rate is zero, so the after-tax cost of debt equals the interest rate.

New (marginal) values should be used in computation of WACC because in financial management the WACC s used primarily to make investment decisions, and these decisions hinge on projects' returns vs. the cost of new capital. The historical cost is important to a certain extent the average cost of all capital raised in the past and still outstanding is used by regulators when they determine the rate of return a public utility should be allowed to earn, however the relevant cost is the marginal cost of new debt to be raised.

.

a) The cost of debt (kd) is 6.6% as calculated below.

First, we have calculated Yield to Maturity by using a financial calculator and the YTM is 11% (5.5% semiannually)

Before-tax cost of debt is 11%

The tax rate is 40%

After-tax cost of debt is 11(1-.4) = 6.6%

b) Typically, when calculating the cost of debt, the flotation cost which is the cost incurred to sell new bonds, is disregarded. And this is, in a large content, due to the fact that the vast majority of debt is privately placed and hence has no flotation cost associated with issuing new bonds. Also, the adjustment for flotation costs usually has a very small effect on the cost of debt. There are some situations when the flotation cost should be considered in the after-tax cost of debt. First is when the floatation costs are a large percentage of the cost debt. The second situation is when the bond's life is short.

c) The nominal cost of debt should be used, which is 11%. The effective annual rate implies the following formula

(1+0.11/)-1= 11.%

Most companies use the nominal rate for all component costs because WACC is used to discount the capital budgeting cash flows. The capital budgeting cash flows are considered to occur at the end of the year. Using the nominal rate keeps the timing consistent for both the cash flows and the discount rate.

d) The 11% cost of debt (before tax) based on the current 15 years bonds is a fare estimate of a 0 years bonds. If the 15 years bonds would not be a good estimate of the new 0-year bonds, we could use the yield curve to further estimate the future interest rates on the 0-year bonds. The formula to calculate the yield curve is kd = krf + IP + DRP + LP + MRP. We based our consideration that the 15 years bonds is good a estimate for a 0 years bond on the fact that SIVMED's bonds are BBB rated and should bear a higher interest rate, due to the default risk premium, than long-term T-bonds or an average A rated bond. SIVMED's bonds bear 11% interest, T-bonds bear 8% interest and an average A-rated bond bears 10% interest.

e) In the case in which the SIVMED's outstanding debt has not been recently traded, there are other methods to estimate the cost of debt. One of these is the publicly traded debt of a similar firm that could be used as a reasonable estimate. The other method would be to contact an investment banker to evaluate the firm's debt and render an opinion on its cost.

f) Yes, it would matter if the bonds were callable. Callable bonds are redeemable by the issuing company before the maturity date. So, if market interest rates decrease, the company can call its bonds and reissue them at a lower interest. The yield to call interest rate should be used to estimate kd for callable bonds.

.

a) The estimated cost of preferred stock (Kps) is .8% and is calculated below.

Kps = Dps/(Pn F)

= ($.5 x 4) / ($104.00-$.00) = .8%

Where

D- dividends

P-price

F-flotation cost

b) Companies like to own preferred stock because 70% of the received dividends are tax deductible. On the other hand the companies that raise capital through debt benefit from tax deductions on the interest paid. So, the cost of debt before-tax is higher then the cost of preferred stock. When the firm that issues the bonds receives the after-tax benefits of the deductible interest payments the after-tax cost of debt is lower than the cost of preferred stock.

c) If the preferred stock is redeemed in 5 years at a cost of $110.00, then the cost of preferred stock will be Kps=10.48%. We calculated this using a financial calculator and the following values N=0, PMT=$.50, PV= $104.00, FV=$110.00.

Silicon Valley Medical Technologies Cost of Capital

4.a. The cost associated with retained earning is the stockholders' opportunity costs. If all retained earnings are distributed to shareholders, they can reinvest the money in stock, bonds, real estate and so on. So, the earning retained by the company must earn at least as much as the investor's next best alternative forgone (of the same risk level) to satisfy the investors.

4.b. Using the CAPM approach, SIVMED's estimated cost of retained earnings (kre) is 15.%

kre = krf + ( RPm ) bi = .08 + (.06 1.) = 15.%

Here the market risk free rate krf = 8.0% (long-term T-bond rate)

The market risk premium RPm =6.0% (according to the investment-banking firm's estimates)

The firm's historical beta is 1..

4.c. There are three major reasons for using the T-bond rate as the risk free rate than the T-bill rate. First, most stockholders invest for a long-term basis. The inflation expectations of the T-bonds more accurately reflect the long-term expectations of the bondholders better than the expectations of the T-Bills. Second, Treasure bill rates are more volatile than are Treasure bond rates. Third, the CAMP is supposed to measure the expected return over a particular holding period (life of the project). Since most of the projects have long lives, therefore, the long-term T-bonds rate is a better choice for the risk-free rate.

If a project with a shortterm life or the market is more volatile and it's hard to predict, d the T-bill rates might be better estimate for risk-free rate.

4.d. Historical betas compare a company's stock returns against the market returns using historical data. Both the adjusted beta and the fundamental beta include adjustments to the historical beta to more accurately estimate the risk perceptions of the marginal investor. Adjusted betas correct a possible statistical bias in the historical beta by adjusting it to make it closer to the average beta of 1.0. A fundamental beta incorporates information about the company such as changes in product lines and capital structure.

SIVMED's historical beta is probably a worse measure of its future market risk than the historical beta for an average NYSE company would be for its future market risk. There are several reasons. First, SIVMED's has only three years of stock returns to compare against the market returns. On average most NYSE companies would have more years of data to compare that would yield a more accurate beta. Secondly, it has been stated that recently competition has become stiffer with many large biotech firms such as Genentech, Amgen, and Bristol-Myers realizing the opportunities available in SIVMED's market. As competition increases in the market, SIVMED may have a difficult time maintaining its market share and returns.

4.e. SIVMED can obtain a market risk premium for use in a CAPM cost of equity calculation through either in-house calculations or through external sources. If an external source is used, the company could consult a financial research firm or investment banker to estimate its market risk premium. If the estimate is created in-house there are two approaches that can be used historical or forward looking. Ibbotson Associates' historical risk premium study can be used to create the market risk premium using the historical approach. For the forward looking approach, there are several financial research firms that estimate the expected rate of return of the market based on discounted cash flows. These firms include Value Line, Zacks, and Institutional Brokers Estimate System (IBES). If the current T-bond rate is subtracted from this estimate, the result is a good estimate for the market risk premium.

5.a. Using the discounted cash flow (DCF) method, the estimate of SIVMED's cost of retain earning is 14.8 percent

kre = ( D1 / P0 ) + expected g

= ($1.0 1.10) / $5.00 + .10

= 14.8%

.

5.b. Under the assumption that average return on equity is 14% and that 5% of retained earnings have been paid out as dividends, we can calculate g using the formula g = b (r).

g = .14 ( 1-.5)= 10.5%

Using this g to estimate ks would be 15. percent.

5.c. Historical dividend growth under the point-to-point method = 0.0

Historical dividend growth using linear regression = 0.0

6. Using the bond-yield-plus-risk-premium method, we get the estimate of SIVMED's cost of retained earning is 15.0 percent

kre = bond yield + risk premium

= 11.0 + 4.0 = 15.0%

The bond yield is calculated to be 11.0 in question number ;

The risk premium for the bond-yield-plus-risk-premium method is a judgmental estimate in the range of to 5 percentage points. We have used 4.0% as the risk premium.

Ethical Decision-Making

In today's business and personal world, ethical decisions are made on a daily basis. Most of these decisions are based on company ground rules. The others are based on personal ground rules. All decisions can have a number of ground rules that help us determine whether our decision is ethical or unethical. Each decision whether it is based on company or personal ground rules will have its own set of implications.

Discussion

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, ethics is a system of accepted beliefs that control behavior, and it is the study of what is morally right and wrong, or a set of beliefs about what is morally right and wrong. (Cambridge Dictionary). I work in a hospital so an example of an ethical situation would be; suppose I am up in the Emergency Room and a family member of my best friend comes in through the ambulance. This person is seriously injured, and you overhear the nurses say that they will probably not make it. You know that your best friend and this family member are extremely close, and it will devastate them not to be there when they past away. The ethical question here is do I break company policy and call my friend or say nothing and just acted shocked when my friend tells me about their relative. The ground rules for my company are detailed when it comes to patient information. Since I work in the Information Systems department, we are not allowed to speak to anyone about the situation. We can comment in general among fellow coworkers but not to anyone outside the company. A general comment would be saying, "There was a serious accident that just came into the Emergency Room". Anything else is considered unethical and violating patient rights and will result in immediate termination. My personal set of ethics tells me to call my best friend and tell her what happen, so she can spend the last moments with her relative. I would not be harming the patient or releasing any sensitive data to the general public, just her relative. I would have such a guilty conscience if I just stood by and acted like the situation never happened. But on the other hand, I do not want to loose my job. I have been with the hospital for 1 years and I love my job. So in order to keep my job and help me keep a clear conscience, I could speak to the nurse in charge. I would let her know that I know a close relative of this patient and I could then tell her my friend's phone number so they could contact her. This conclusion allows me to obey the ethical practices of the hospital and maintain patient confidentiality. It also relieves me of feeling guilty about not doing anything about the situation. This type of situation is not spelled out in our company handbook, but I had to make a decision how to satisfy both sets of ethical ground rules. Ethical decisions are not always in black and white, sometimes you have to work in the gray area.

Custom writing service can write essays on ethics

Another example of this type could result in a totally different outcome. For example suppose I am in the Emergency Room working on a computer and the doctor leaves a diagnostic screen up. While I am closing windows to prepare to reboot the computer, I see a name that I recognize. It is the name of my best friends relative and they are diagnosed with a fatal disease and they are not given a long time to live. Your ethical dilemma is, do you call your friend and inform her of your current findings or do you just keep what you have learned to yourself. The company ground rules are you do not speak about what you have saw to anyone. You are not even allowed to mention it to coworkers. When you begin your employment at the hospital, you sign a document stating that anything you see will not be a topic of conversation. My personal set of ethics tells me to call my friend and tell her the bad news. But in these case I would be hurting the patient, her relative might want to let people know in their own time. The relative also might want to keep this information from all the family. This would also open the hospital up for a lawsuit if my friend would tell how she found out about the diagnoses. So I would not only be fired but I could possibility be sued for damages. I would have a guilty conscience, especially if the relative kept this information to themselves. I would not want to see anyone not have a support group around them knowing that they will die soon. This conclusion only allows for one decision, and that is to act like I never saw the diagnose. This is the only solution that allows me to obey the practices of the hospital and the confidentiality of the patient. I will have a guiltily conscience and feel bad for my friend especially if the relative keeps it a secret. But in this example there is no other scenario, I must respect the patient's wishes. When a patient comes to the hospital, they expect that all of their personal information will be kept in confidence. This ethical decision is in black and white, but the two example are similar in nature.

When making a ethical decision a person needs to ask themselves what are the ground rules, both professional and personal. Sometimes, these ground rules match but usually there is difference. You have to carefully analyze both set of ground rules and make a decision. This entails listing all the professional and personal ground rules and see it there is a gray area. If not you will have to make a decision that could have a impact on your job and the way people view your character.

Richard had many reasons on why he wanted to move to Chicago. However, he also had motives that caused him to move. All the experiences he went through caused him to leave the South. Once he was in the big city, a variety of things happened to him which made a big effect on his lifestyle.

Being a young black but living in the South, Richard was faced with the many obstacles of segregation and mistreatment of the black people. Most likely the main reason for Richard wanting to move to Chicago is the problems he is having fitting into the white population. At an early age, he hears rumors about a white man beating a black boy and that fills his mind with questions about relations between white and black people. At this point, Richard is still to young and ignorant to understand what is going and nobody in his house will talk to him about racism and their feelings about it.

When Richard becomes a little older, he takes a few jobs that really opened his eyes towards seeing how blacks are treated. His second job, working for his illiterate neighbor, lets him experience the isolation of Southern black sharecroppers. After seeing them, Richard feels like a civilized man from a big city. However, the next job he takes, in an optical lens-making store, makes him feel the opposite way as the pervious. Pease and Reynolds, his white coworkers, make Richards time at the shop a nightmare. Trying to make him feel useless and plotting tricks against him, Pease and Reynolds drive Richard out of the store, making him quit. With this job, Richard experiences total demoralization and feels very violated by the white people that he becomes ashamed.

Richard drifts from job to job and ends up at a hotel where he witnesses a white security guard fondling a black maid. As he steps forward to help her out, the guard threatens him with a gun. After this happened, Richard realizes that racism encourages theft, so that the black people can get back at the whites for taking advantage of the black maid. He leaves his job at the hotel and takes one at a movie theater. Here, he helps his coworkers steal two hundred dollars which makes him yearn to leave the South and move to Chicago. He then steals a gun from a neighbor and pawns it for money. While working other various jobs, Richard makes enough money and moves to Chicago.

When Richard arrives in Chicago, he still sees signs of racism and segregation. The best example of this is when he takes the job as an orderly at a medical research institute. Here, he notices the segregation of labor the health professionals are all white and the menial workers are all black. Contrary to what Richard thought, Chicago still has its problems but gives blacks more freedom.

Poverty is another reason of Richard wanting to move to Chicago. Not long after the Wrights move to Memphis, Tennessee, Richard's father, Nathan, abandons the family to live with a younger woman. Now without his financial support, Richard and his family are constantly left hungry. Richard often begs his mother, Ella, for food but only gets told he has no father, which causes Richard to have a bitter feeling about his father. Even when Ella sues Nathan for child support, Nathan convinces the judge that he has already given them all the support he can. This causes Ella to put her two sons in an orphanage for a month. Here, Richard gets to eat two meals a day and pulls grass by hand.

Ella finally retrieves her sons from the orphanage and moves them to Elanie, Arkansas, where her sister Maggie lives. Richard learns that Aunt Maggie has a great amount of food. However, after living so long without food, Richard tends to hoard the food because he fears that the food will run out. Soon after their arrival, Maggie's husband is murdered causing the family to move to Helena, Arkansas. Once again the family faces hunger. To make a few dollars, Richard tries to sell a dog named Betsy, but the dog is hit by a buggy and dies. For Christmas that year, Richard gets an orange because there is no money to spend on gifts.

When Ella becomes sick after suffering a stroke, Richard is forced to work a bunch of jobs to help pay rent and have food to eat. Not being able to make much money, Richards's family decides to separate him and his brother to make it easier. Eventually they become reunited and move to Jackson. As Richard grows older, he works many more jobs to make money and after a few years he finally makes enough money to move to Chicago where he believes he will thrive in the working world.

Although Richard had a plethora of jobs, he never found one in which he felt welcomed or comfortable at. Weather he was being made fun of for wanting to be a writer or being discriminated against as a black boy, Richard still had positive hopes on finding a job that would pay his way to Chicago. He has always heard that blacks and whites were treated as equals there, so he takes the opportunity to save enough money and try his luck in a new place. Richard is also hopeful that he will be treated as an equal in looking for a job in Chicago because he wants to make money and bring his family to come and live with him. In looking forward to all the job opportunities that await for him, Richard can not wait to move to Chicago.

Richard knows that he must tell people a lie about moving to Chicago because the Southern white people do not like when blacks move to the North because it implies that the blacks do not like the way they are treated in the South. He ends up telling everyone that he wants to move up North to be close to his mother. Upon arriving in Chicago, Richard is scared of the city and feels himself becoming depressed about being a failure.

Doing My Laundry

There is nothing quite like having clean clothes. The feel of clean cotton on your

skin and the smell of Bounty in the air makes you feel "good allover". It is the worst

feeling in the world to wake up in the morning and have nothing to wear except dirty

Buy cheap Doing Laundry term paper

and wrinkled clothes. To have your laundry done gives you a feeling of control in your

life, not to mention a definite plus in your hygiene. Doing the laundry is not an activity

that I look forward to, but I must admit that I am relieved when my closet and drawers

are full of clean clothes.

The first step to doing laundry is sorting the clothes. There are four piles that you

have to have towels, lights, whites and darks. The reason for this separation is because

if you mix different colored clothes in the washing machine, there is a possibility that the

darker colors will bleed into the water and stain the lighter colored clothes. Usually I

separate my towels from my clothes because they tend to leave lint on my clothing.

Sorting is a very key part of doing laundry. Without it, your clothes might come out of the

washer or dryer different than the way that you put them in.

After you sort your clothes, you can go ahead and put them in the washing

machine. The key is to get in as many clothes as you can without exceeding the limit

that it recommended and without cramming the clothes. After the clothes are in

the washer, you must measure out the right amount of soap and pour it over the

clothes. Close the lid, adjust the settings according to the amount of clothes that you put

in, and press start. After the washing is done, you take out the clothes and then

proceed to put them in the dryer. You must check the lint trap to make sure that there is

no lint in it. If there is, remove it, and put the trap back into the machine. Also, don't

forget to put a dryer sheet in with your clothes to help reduce static cling. Adjust the

settings and press start.

The last part of doing laundry, which is the part I dread, is the most

important part of the whole process. Getting the clothes from the dryer into drawers

and/or closet is the last step. After the clothes are dry they need to be immediately

taken out from the dryer and either hung up or folded. The reason for this is that if you

procrastinate, your clothes will become wrinkled. If you let up on this part, you may

have defeated the whole purpose. If you don't put them away immediately and lay then

on the floor until you get around to it, they may get scattered around your floor and you

won't be able to tell what's dirty and what's clean.

Even though doing laundry seems like an everyday chore, I think that it is a very

important one. I think that it is a very rewarding process that leaves you feeling very

invigorated when you are through. Wearing clean and unwrinkled clothes makes you

feel more confident and refreshed throughout your whole entire day.

Please note that this sample paper on Doing Laundry is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Lincoln Electric built their business on a reputation of delivering a continuously better product to their customers at the best price in the industry. They were able to perpetuate this mission by their use of a unique compensation plan for their workers. Their compensation plan paid workers for production of units, and added to their compensation with generous bonuses based on the success of the company. This compensation plan was the hallmark of Lincoln Electric and has not significantly changed in the over 0-year history of their company. Their compensation system paid workers for production and allowed the workers to make decisions on how best to allocate their time and resources. Their system also determined bonus distribution based on specific measures like dependability, output, cooperation and quality, they made these measures public by giving every employee a rating. Lincoln Electric's business flourished and the company expanded their operation worldwide using all the same methods that had made them so successful in the United States. However, their operations abroad did not succeed as expected, and their company suffered greatly by the burden of the failing operations. Lincoln Electric made several mistakes in implementing their expansion plans and in key assumptions they made about the applicability of their compensation plan worldwide. Furthermore, when the problems arose they were not well equipped to handle the new challenges.

The success of the Lincoln Electric compensation plan in the United States was that there were no caps on the earning potential of a worker. The more the worker produced the more they could make. This system created in effect, many independent sub-contractors, who were free to make their own decisions about their production. The system fostered a particular type of worker, very independent, tough minded and self-motivated. The management of Lincoln Electric was convinced that their system would work anywhere it was implemented, so when they expanded to foreign countries they assumed easy adoption of their system by foreign laborers. However, many of the foreign workers did not share the same values as the American workers that had made the Lincoln system so successful. The piecework system is not as effective if the workers are not motivated by strictly monetary compensation, and Lincoln Electric found foreign workers valued other compensation like sick leave and vacation more than their domestic workers. Moreover, many foreign governments had laws that made the full adoption of the key element of Lincoln's piecework system illegal. The Lincoln system was not the same when all pieces of the system were not in place. In addition to the lack of full implementation, the system hinged on a substantial bonus based on the productivity of the company. When the company struggled to make a profit, the bonus was small and the motivation of the workers was lessened. Lastly, the Lincoln Electric core management group was visible on the factory floor in Cleveland and workers felt as if they had a direct connection with the upper management of the company. Foreign workers, of which many of them were obtained through acquisition, lacked that sense of closeness and direct ownership of the organization.

Separate from the difficulty in implementing the foundation of the Lincoln compensation system, the company was hit with misfortune in their expansion. One of the keys to their expansion in Europe was the European Union's elimination of tariffs between European nations. This tariff elimination would allow each European plant to produce specified products and transfer them cheaply to the different European countries. This tariff elimination never happened and Lincoln was stuck with several plants that would have to continue to produce the entire breath of their product lines which never allowed them the economies of scale and scope they were counting on. Even more damaging was the recession that hit economies in Europe and in Japan during the years directly following their most aggressive expansion.

These problems that Lincoln Electric faced were devastating and when it became clear that their expansion plans were failing, Lincoln was slow to take action and unfamiliar with what the appropriate actions were. The underlying root cause of Lincoln's struggles was their 0+ year corporate culture that was founded on an ideology of letting people figure things out. In other words, Lincoln's culture was so ingrained in de-centralized decision rights that when fast action was needed by corporate direction, the corporate management was unable to recognize the need for intervention and assumed the International operations would figure out their own problems. Moreover, all of the Lincoln executives were hired from within. None of them had the knowledge of how to deal with International business problems. In addition to these fundamental root-problems, the successful US operations were the home of the corporate decision makers these execs were highly visible on the factory floor. It is reasonable to assume that, because of these close proximities, corporate executives had a much better feel for the domestic operations and could quickly recognize a problem locally more so than in the International operations. All of these fundamental and cultural foundations at Lincoln Electric were the root cause of the struggles of the operations in foreign countries.

Knute Rockne - Coach and Legend of Notre Dame

Knute Kenneth Rockne was born on March 4, 1888 in Voss, Norway. He

first moved to Chicago at the age of 5. Nobody liked him there, and he was

in many fights. Before football or even baseball, Knute discovered skiing.

He loved it, and went skiing every chance he got during the winter. Knute

was a natural athlete, and excelled in all of the sports he tried. He

excelled in track, making a name for himself later on.

Although he was always one of the shortest guys around, Knute was

one of the toughest. The only protective gear he ever wore was adhesive

tape that he stuck to his ears to prevent them from being torn off. Knute

often said Show me a good and gracious loser and Ill show you a

failure.

Knute discovered the great game of football at the age of 7. He

played in games against other teams his age. The team he played on was

called the Tricky Tigers. All of the teams were sandlot teams. Knute

could not get enough of the sport. He praticed every chance he got. In

fact, the other boys thought him crazy for practicing so much. This

obsession almost got him an education. Knute never made the starting team

until he was a senior, so he played on the scrubs team.

At the same time, Knute tried playing many other sports. His

school attendance slipped and his grades became mediocre. Persistence paid

off, and after years on the scrubs, Knute finally made it to the

starting football team. After this successful senior football season, it

was time for him to leave high school. It was a wonder that he got into

Notre Dame with his high school record.

At the age of , Rockne decided that he wanted to fulfill a

dream. That dream was to become a pharmacist and to eventually own his own

drug store. Two of Knutes friends gained acceptance to a small college in

South Bend, Indiana called Notre Dame. Knute decided to try to get into

this same school, although his high school grades were dismal. He was

accepted, but his parents were not fond of the idea of him going to a

Catholic school, as they themselves were practicing Lutherans. However,

they did not forbid him to go. Interestingly, Notre Dame was not Rockneys

first college choice. For years he had saved and planned to go to the

University of Illinois. Knute had not even planned on playing football in

college. That decision would have resulted in a very different future for

Knute. Basically, Knutes decision to go to Notre Dame was an economic

one; it was much cheaper than U.I.

While working during college to earn his way, Knute got a course

in memory training, which would later become a valuable asset in his

coaching career. A

picture at this time revealed a cocky young man whose sparse hair made him

appear more like a young professor than a college freshman. Knute made

friends with the future quarter back Gus Dorais. They would be roommates

through all 4 years of college, and took vacations together during school

breaks.

Rockne didnt make the varsity squad until his third year. There

were many theories about why this was. Some said he was too short and

caused too many turnovers as a freshman. Whatever the reason, Knute palyed

on the scrubs for two years. A new coach entered the picture by his junior

year and gave Knute a chance at the end position. Everyone knows what he

did from there. (If you dont already, you will!) In his career at Notre

Dame, Knute averaged a grade point average. In his senior year of

college, he was still determined to become a pharmacist. He had no

intention of becoming a coach!

Rockne did not invent the forward pass - he revolutionized it!

During a summer break form school, Gus and Knute decided to fool around

with The forward pass. Knute got an idea telling Gus What if you hold the

football closer to this end? Gus tried it and was astonished by the

outcome. He could actually control the speed and accuracy of the ball!

After that, Gus discovered something he wanted Knute to do. Instead of

letting the ball come to him and hit him in the chest, he instructed Knute

to catch it with his hands in full stride. Gus then proceeded to deliver

the ball to Knute in this fashion, and the idea worked. Sure enough, Knute

caught the ball without missing a step. Knute Rockne had perfected the art

of relaxing your hands to catch the ball. He also invented pass patterns.

Notre Dame brought this new arsenal to their playbook in the biggest

game of the year against Army. Army was heavily favored in this game. The

fighting Irish came out with their usual ground attack for 7 plays, with

Rockne out with a leg injury. Rockne came out to the huddle and told Gus

it was time. Rockne went in, hitting the OB and ran a beautiful pattern.

Gus delivered the ball right on target and Rockne scored on a 5 yard

toss. Everyone was awed by this sequence of events. Notre Dame went into

halftime leading 14-1. They came out in the nd half and boom, boom, one

pass after another they marched down the field like a steam roller. Seven

completions went to Knute. The Irish trounced Army with a 5-1 victory,

in what would become known as the game that revolutionized football. In

his autobiography, Rockne said that this victory inspired the development

of Notre Dame spirit.

After the game, Gus and Knute held clinics to teach the forward

pass, and many came to learn a spectacular art form. Football was no

longer a sport of physical being, but more of a science which anyone could

master. After the victory against Army, Knute decided to stay at N.D. and

become a teacher. This was because he loved all the people so much. He

would not stay long though, for he still grasps on dream of becoming a

pharmacist. In Rocknes deal he would be teaching chemistry and take the

job of assistant coach of the football team. His salary was $,400 per

year.

From the first practice Rockne displayed a skill as a strategist.

He found many new ways to run plays and confuse the opposition. When

Harper(the head coach) retired, Rockne took the prestigious job of head

coach of ND. His salary was increased to $5,000 a year. It was at this

time that he loosened his grip on becoming a pharmacist and decided to

devote his life to football.

From day one Rocknes goal was to establish ND as a national

sports power. Rockne once said about coaching, We can all be geniuses,

because one definition of genius is the infinite capacity for taking

pains. Perfection in petty detail is most essential.

George Gipp was a freshman thinking of dropping out of school.

Rockne foud him drop-kicking 5 yard field goals on the campuss practice

grounds. Knute invited him to tryout for the team. In his first season the

Gipper kicked a 6 yard field goal, scored three game clinching

touchdowns, and had a total of 480 yards in one game versus Army. He was

considered to be the best player that Rockne had ever recruited. Gipp was

a notorious fellow for gambling and cutting class. Still, the team team

and Knute immortilized him. Gipp died of complications from pneumonia

during the 10 season. In his final game, althuogh very ill, he

remarkably threw two touchdowns versus NW.

Eight years later, as the Irish battled a seemingly invincible

Army team, Rockne shook his team with quiet locker room speech that was

immortalized by sport writer Grantland Rice. Ive got to go, Rock, said

Rockne, Imitating the dying mans gestures. Its alright. Im not afraid.

Sometimes, Rock, when things are wrong and the breaks are beating the

boys, tell them to go in there with all theyve got and win one just for

the Gipper. I dont know where Ill be then, Rock, but Ill know about it.

And Ill be happy.

The Irish ran out of the room and played hardnosed football. The

final score was 1-6 in Notre Dames favor, and the New York daily News

ran perhaps its most famous headline Gipps Ghost Beat Army.

He never used the same speech twice on his lads. He had a

showmans instinct for when to say what to get his troops fired up. His

motto was Practice, Practice, Practice! Practice makes perfect and

perfect practice makes a winning team.

One of his most innovative ideas was the Notre Dame Shift. This

was when the entire backfield would move all to oneside of the ball before

the ball was snapped. This really screwed up the defenders and it worked a

lot for ND.

Knute was the most innovative and charismic coaches of his era.

The Cleavland Press called him the Buffalo Bill of his

generation. In his last game as coach he defied his doctors orders and

went to the field. The players looked on in horror when the man they

thought might die in front of them told them to win or watch him die.

Rockne ended his career with the greatest all time % of .881 105 wins,1

losses, 5 ties, 6 national championships and 5 undefeated seasons. Rokne

tragically died in a plane crash a the age of 4. Studebaker named a car

after him and the U.S. government named a ship after him. Will Rogers put

it best when he said, It takes a big calamity to shock a country all at

once, but Knute, you did it. You died one of our national heroes. Notre

Dame was your address, but every gridiron in america was your home.(needs

to be proofread)

A Frightening Incident

A special forest was shrouded with a narrow zigzagged path which went into the darkness. In the forest was stood old mansion with weeds. The trees were tall and surrounded the mansion. Untrimmed bushes surrounded the house and everything was covered with a thin smoke that curled the chimney lazily. No life seemed to appear and low, rumbling thunder gave a warning that a storm was on its way. Girl Scout troop 7746 sought shelter in an old, gusty great house. Wind came from the window and violently slammed the door. Light in the mansion was dim and tittered through the hallway. Girl Scouts shrieked and wailed wildly when they saw a ugly face that appeared over the staircase. The girls were bewildered and terrified. They gaped towards a door along the wall. Girls searched for a door know and when they found it they gave it a twist. When they opened the door surprised filled the air. Cool air struck faces in the room. English essay Wuthering heights

'I got the sexton to remove the earth off her coffin-lid and I opened it.' This is a quotation taken from the novel Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte. The quote is spoken by the character Heathcliff. This is a brilliant example of how the author, Emily Bronte uses a technique of writing called Gothic Tradition. This style of writing is used to impart fear, mysterious behaviour, and a sense of danger. This in turn can make the reader more eager to carry on reading to find out the out come. This technique of writing is also very common in novels such as The Hound of the Baskervilles, written by Conan Doyle and Frankenstein written by Mary Shelly. This quote is also a very good example of the relationship between the characters Heathcliff and Cathy. Emily Bronte wrote this novel, at a time when class, status and money mattered such a lot, in their everyday lives. This was also a time when death came very early, and religion played a big part in everybody's lives. I believe, that all these things appertaining to the social and historical influences, had a lot to do with the way that Emily Bronte wrote her novels, this one in particular. The characters, Cathy and Heathcliff had a very difficult relationship, they were deeply in love, but class and status would always prevent them being together.

Emily Bronte describes Heathcliff as a dark evil man, for example 'A half civilised ferocity lurked, yet in the depressed brows and eyes full of black fire it was subdued.' This gives you the feeling that he is an evil, and an untrustworthy person. I think Bronte puts this image across because it adds to the Gothic Horror theme, and if you didn't have him in the story described as he is, then the story would not have the tension and suspense that this character creates. Bronte describes him this way to make the reader really get in to the book, to really feel something about the character. The reader could possibly feel sorry for him, or develop a strong dislike for him; it is this form of writing that gets people engrossed, making it almost impossible to put the book down.

In the quotation, Heathcliff seems closer to his main goal in life, and almost happier. This is because for once he is in control, and he has possession of her, she is also, not with Edgar. He is like this because nothing matters to him anymore, because Cathy is gone, and he is left with this huge void which can only be filled with revenge. I think Heathcliff became this evil and untrustworthy person was because of the way he was brought up at the Heights. Earnshaw treated him kindly, as if he was a member of their family; meanwhile Hindley was bulling him appallingly. When Earnshaw died, Hindley took over and made Heathcliff a servant and was still bulling him even when he was a grown man. This made him bitter and twisted, as described by Bronte, for example "a half civilised ferocity lurked, yet in the depressed brows and eyes full of black fire, it was subdued". I think if Heathcliff's upbringing had been better, he would have had a better temperament and perhaps would have become a much nicer person.

Cathy was a very lively girl who was very, greedy, stubborn and in lots of ways very wicked. She hates it when she doesn't get her own way, and this makes her very selfish. All she cares about really is her status, money and to be "the greatest lady in the land". She denied the true feelings in her heart, for her status, class and money, for example "My love for Linton is like the foliage in the woods, time will change it" This shows that she only has feelings for Linton because he is rich and it would make her very important if she was to marry him. Then she went on to say "My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath, a source of visible delight, but necessary". This she was telling to Nellie, also that she was to marry Linton. Then she went on to say "It would de-grade me to marry Heathcliff". This proves all she is concerned about is a good reputation and wealth.

Heathcliff and Cathy shared a very close relationship since they were children; they grew up together having very strong feelings for each other. But class and status got in the way. Cathy could not marry Heathcliff, not only because he was after all, her half brother, but because her brother Hindley, had such a strong dislike of Heathcliff, he treated him very badly even for a servant.

When Cathy decided to marry Edgar, this drove Heathcliff insane, with jealousy. Cathy's relationship with Edgar was very different to her relationship with Heathcliff, she and Heathcliff were they were madly in love, but could not be together. This made Heathcliff very spiteful and the only thing he could feel was revenge. When they were children they spent nearly everyday they had together, on the moors running wild. Heathcliff became very jealous of Edgar at a young age, because he realised, Edgar was in a position to marry her but he could not. For example "If I could knock him down twenty times that would not make him less hansom or me more so". When Cathy spent time at Thrushcroft Grange, Heathcliff got very angry because she was not on the moors with him, he was so angry he killed some baby lapwings because, as he told her later, "There was no point in keeping them alive if you were not to see them".

Heathcliff struggled nearly all the way through the book, trying to fit in to society, a good example of this is when he was going to the Christmas party and he cleaned himself up and he looked presentable, but he was always seen as a servant and he was thrown out of the party, then beaten with a wooden stick, he had literally only just stepped through the door way. This was all at Hindley's Command, "Get that gypsy out of here"

As we get towards the end of the book, when Heathcliff returns, he has become very wealthy and has raised himself up in to society. Just before he went away he said that he would pay Hindley back for all that he had done to him, and this he did when he returned. Hindley had lost himself in drink, following the death of his wife Frances, who died when his child, Hareton was born. Heathcliff went back up to the Heights and Hindley was drunk, as per usual, Heathcliff got Hindley to gamble away, his ownership of the Heights. so now, Heathcliff became the new owner. This was Heathcliff's revenge on Hindley. His next objective was to take the Grange, which was of course, the home of Cathy and Edgar. Cathy was pregnant with Edgar's child. Edgar's sister Isabella became infatuated with Heathcliff, happy with his evil plan, he encouraged her to run away with him. Following their marriage he began to beat her. Cathy, although married herself and with child, was very angry that Heathcliff had married someone else, because she now could never have him.

Cathy, due to self neglect became gravely ill, eventually Heathcliff was allowed to visit her without Edgar's knowledge. She told him "You have killed me-and thriven on it, I think" They blamed each other for their broken hearts, she told him she would not die in peace. Heathcliff said " I forgive what you have done to me. I love my murderer-but yours! How can I?"

Later that night, Cathy gave birth to Catherine, but died shortly afterwards. Heathcliff beside himself was plunged into agonising grief.

Many years later, when Catherine was around the age of eighteen, she met Heathcliff and Linton, his son. Heathcliff then tricked and bullied her in to marring Linton, who was at this time very ill. When she returned to the Grange, her father Edgar died, leaving the Grange to his daughters husband, Linton. Weeks later, Linton died leaving the grange to Heathcliff, just as he had contrived. The only reason Heathcliff had manipulated events to such an extent was to fulfil his desire for revenge.

When Heathcliff sees Cathy's ghost for the first time, I think he felt very excited and terrified all at the same time. When he tells Nellie what he saw, the Ghost of Cathy she thought that he was going mad. In the film it showed Cathy as a little girl and she takes Heathcliff in to a room filled with a bright light, then it showed them walking out on to the moors hand in hand. Nellie was outside and the bedroom door where the ghost of Cathy appeared, the window was banging, because it was left open. Nellie went up to close he window and she found Heathcliff lying on the bed with his eyes open staring up at the ceiling, he was dead. This makes it seem that she was sent to go and take him back with her. I think these also to a lot in contributing to the main theme, Gothic Tradition. At the end of the film it showed the three grave stones, of Cathy Edgar and Heathcliff in a row.
