What makes a building a thing of beauty.

A building can be a thing of beauty to one person but seem awful to another person. Buildings are built for different reasons, entertainment, education, or just to mark a special event. The millennium dome was built to represent the year 000; it was built in a modern way to show how buildings and technology had changed over the years. Does making a building modern, make it a thing of beauty? Should old buildings be knocked down and made into modern buildings? What makes a building a thing of beauty?

Architecture in the twenty first century is a manifestation of technologies, styles and imaginative ideas. Architects have to move with the times so they have to reinterpret new designs to keep up with technology and time. Modernism and post- modernism could influence these architects. There are so many different materials they could use now than there were before so designing a modern building is more scientific. There is thousands of new machinery and devices used in planning a building and the rules for planning are now stricter than ever. You have to get planning permission for things, so its not as easy as it once was but we now have computers that make things easier by helping to draw up plans. Most man made material can be used to produce a building. I looked at Frank Gehry and his work.

He changes materials and reinterprets forms and shapes from his earlier work. He uses post- modernist ideas and was a good influence on other architects. Architects that have responded to him and pushed technology further on buildings are the likes of Norman foster who designed the millennium dome, Renzo Piano and many more… They use more modern techniques now that Gehry did, this is because of the amount of new technology and methods that come about every day. I think buildings that Gehry produced were more eye catching ones and are used to make an impact, instead of a building of importance.

Another artist that wanted to find out more about architecture and materials used for buildings was Frank Lloyd Wright. He used his own home to experiment with light, form, space, materials and furnishings. He turned his home into a studio where he designed over one hundred and fifty structures including, the Robie house, Larkin Building and Unity Temple.

Norman Foster is one of the worlds leading architects and has been awarded for his achievements. He has designed over a hundred buildings in his time, for example, Hong Kong airport, London's city hall, the Clark centre at Stanford University in California and the Reichstag in Berlin. It has been quoted that

' His architecture is universally admired for its conceptual and structural brilliance and 'high-tech' beauty, a special union of technology and aesthetics that has been polished and perfected in his life time.'

But does everyone agree with that? I think that some of Norman Foster's designs are good but although they are modern and that they are in keeping with the time and new technology, they lack character. The older buildings like the ones you can see in York, are part of history and when you go and see them its like you've gone back in time to how it used to be. They have character, they maybe slanted or about to fall down or really close to a building opposite but you will never get a piece of history like that back in our life times. Some people would disagree and say that they are a waste of time and should be pulled down and made into modern buildings that could be more worth while, but if you get rid of all the pieces of history what are we going to look back on to. Buildings like you see in York are a piece of history and should be kept as they are. If you modernised buildings around them it would spoil the town and it wouldn't be in keeping with the town. Nottingham hasn't got many old buildings left like that, which in a way is a shame; they still have an old pub and the lace market. They have tried to bring Nottingham up with the times, by adding the new Corner House in. It hasn't really changed the feel to Nottingham in anyway. It has provided more entertainment for old and young people around Nottingham and it is a feature that people would like to go and see. Unlike York where it is known for its historical buildings Nottingham hasn't got that many historical buildings. It has Robin Hood, the castle and caves that hopefully will remain with Nottingham but I think that a few modern buildings wouldn't spoil anything about it, it would only make it better.

I don't think anyone could define a building as being a thing of beauty, because all buildings are different and people have different points of view. Young people may class modern buildings as a thing of beauty but then older generations may think that they are spoiling a town or city and that they should keep historical buildings, who knows! I personally think that buildings, which have character and are part of history is a thing of beauty but that doesn't mean to say that modern buildings are not. Buildings that give people entertainment are the ones that are a thing of beauty whether it is an old building or a modern building. I would deeply disagree with knocking old buildings down just so that they can build as many houses on that plot as they can. That's not architecture that's just people thinking about money. I also think that you need a bit of both, modern and historical buildings. You need historical buildings because they are a piece of the past, but you also need modern buildings because in time to come people will be classing our modern buildings as old, so them in turn will be a part of history.
