First Snowfall

As the sunny days and crisp cool nights come to an end the winter days slowly creep in as if their grieving for the death of summer. The sky now grey with sadness envelops the trees that once stood lively in their multicolored autumn coats, now bleak and grotesque they stood like they have been twisted up like

against the ashen sky. The last flowers of summer strive to keep the last bit of life, with their weak bodies and limps heads, dreading when the first frost comes and bitterly makes them give up their last will to live. Now brown, brittle mats, that cracked and crunched with every step, replace the once lush, green carpet of grass that lead to every house. Everything so dry, dull and lifeless; not one soul ventures beyond the warmth of their nestled home, nor does one creature wonder far from home. Then quietly almost undetectable snow flaks begin to fall, large and small, fluffy like a feather down they began to float so softly and peaceful with out a fear in the world. The feeling was far from being cold or harsh, the snowfall created a warm, familiar glow. Evoking childhood remembrances of days spent construction snowmen and building sled runs. As the snow continued to intensify and transformer the bleak, harsh landscape it slowly become cloaked in a thick mantle of pure white snow. Like a delicate sheer fabric that draped the grotesque, twisted bare limbs of the trees, transforming them in to graceful ballerinas extended their limbs in a everlasting pose, awaiting a no existing audience only the stately fir tree had resisted the change in seasons standing tall and brilliantly green with bundles of stiff needles. While watching it's strong but rubber like branches withstand the weight of the snow.

All that was ugly, dead and brown lay concealed from view beneath a thick blanket of snow brought down by Mother Nature to protect the land during its long winter sleep. Even the houses had collected their milky nightcaps in preparation for the long winter nights ahead.

Stress is a person's reactions to change. It is a physical and mental response to feelings, situations, other people, or places. Stress is an underestimated problem that most people do not take seriously. Stress is the cause of most problems in peoples lives. The certain things that cause stress are called stressors. Stressors can be internal or external. People can have minor stressors or major stressors depending on the situation they are in. When people are "stressing out", they need to stop and think to themselves that everything will get better instead of going totally crazy. The main parts of stress include the symptoms of stress, what stress does to the body, and how to reduce stress. "The following symptoms are what teens report happen to a person when they are

stressed out they want to be alone, they may fight with brothers and sisters, they might

daydream, they might bite their nails constantly, they may have trouble sleeping at night,

and they may cry more easily than they used to" (Gregson ). "Teens also reported other

symptoms such as losing interest in school and homework and also not being able to fully

concentrate on anything. Therefore, teens that are stressed have very different symptoms

for each problem that they are going through" (Gregson ).

A doctor in in Tennessee states that , "Stress hit's the hardest when teens have depression in their family environment and unexpected events in their lives. A person with depression feels extremely sad, hopeless, or helpless. Those feelings can go for weeks or longer. A person with depression can feel overwhelmed and desperate with even a small amount of stress" (www.helping.apa.org). Ronald Childs, a doctor in Mississippi, says, "Family environment can be a stressor to teens. Some teens live in poverty. Some teens live in a home where there is abuse of alcohol or other drugs. They may live with physical or sexual abuse or other types of violence. They may be removed from their home because of these situations" (www.helping.apa.org). Guidelines for the Case Analysis

The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to apply the material in the course to a real life situation and to give you an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas with your group members. Each group will either write a case analysis or make a class presentation.

Here are some pointers for your case analysis. The following set of guidelines is designed to help you with your assignment. If you make sure and cover the three general areas you are likely to improve your chances of putting together a good analysis. I am here to help you in your efforts to complete an effective analysis (but less likely to help when groups wait until the LAST minute!) Please do use these resources.

A good case analysis consists of these three essential components

I. Description and Identification The analysis should begin with a sharply focused summary of the important issues and problems of the company as you see it. Do not provide a detailed history of the company. Make sure your case analysis report is well organized.

II. Analysis and Evaluation The second part of the presentation consists of analyzing the important issues and problem areas and evaluating their impact on the organization. At this stage, an important task expected of you is to apply some of the concepts, theories and techniques we have discussed in this course to the case. You are expected to conduct outside research on the company to provide input to your analysis. Make sure you note down the citations and remember to mention them in your presentation or report. III. Recommendations and Action Plans Once you have described, analyzed and evaluated the company and its issues, the next step is to present recommendations, action plans and or conclusions depending on the individual case. These recommendations should specifically address the problems or issues that you have identified for the company. Always try to substantiate your recommendations with facts and the knowledge that you have acquired in this course. Make sure that your recommendations follow from your analysis. If what you recommend is different from what the company is currently doing then explain why you believe your recommendations are better. If your recommendations are similar to the actions taken by the company, then explain why other alternatives were not feasible. Finally, you are expected to provide an update on the company and explain what is currently happening.

Written Case Analysis (if applicable)

Written analyses must be 15 pages minimum. Standard MLA, APA, or Chicago Format is required as well as all standard rules of grammar and spelling. Please check with the library for use of referencing and styleguides. Considerable points will be deducted for papers written without proper reference style.

Class Presentation (if applicable)

IMPORTANT

1) Make sure you distribute an outline of your presentation to the class.

) Give me a detailed outline of your presentation (including a list of references you used) before you begin the presentation (10% will be deducted if detailed outline is missing).

• The class presentation should be approximately 0 minutes long. You are expected to lead the class discussion following your presentation. This may include answering questions from the class and/or questions you pose to your audience. This could last anywhere from 10 - 15 minutes.

• Use visual aids and speak clearly and loudly. This is a great opportunity for you to practice and develop the oral presentation and analytical skills that are vital to success in the business world. I encourage you to be creative. Mock interviews, sketches, etc. are fine if they are effective in helping you present your case.

Some points to remember

1. Rehearse your presentation. Remember, you only get one chance to present your case. . Make sure you use overheads and that they can be seen clearly from the back of the room. . Do not read from your notes and do use index cards if necessary. 4. Be on time for your presentation. If you need set up time for your presentation, come to class early and be prepared to begin on time. Delays due to lack of preparation on your part will adversely affect your grade. 5. Let me know at least two weeks in advance if you require special equipment for your presentation.

Time yourself. Have a friend or team member signal when you are running out of time. 6. Speak loudly and clearly. 7. Do empathize with the audience and try to make the presentation as relevant and entertaining as possible. Try to get the class to participate in the discussion. Show enthusiasm for the company that your are dealing with and you are likely to get the attention of the audience. 8. Have a contingency plan! Backup your PowerPoint file! Also, group members need to be familiar with one-anothers presentation segment as a contingency for any members absenteeism the day of the presentation.

Peer Evaluation

Each group member is expected to evaluate himself or herself and every other member of the group. These evaluations need to be turned in on the day of the presentation. You may turn these evaluations directly to the instructor if you are concerned about maintaining confidentiality. You must turn in this evaluation on the day it is due to get a grade for the case analysis. The form for the evaluation is included in your syllabus. Please read the procedure for calculating grades on this form.

The Cambridge International Dictionary of English defines the word true as real or sincere and the word friend as a companion. Put the two together and the result of true friend is a real or sincere companion. True friends are people that come and many different shapes and sizes. There can be true friends like a boyfriend or girlfriend, or just a very close friend that listens and helps, or maybe a family member like a brother or sister or a parent.

In most people's eyes, a true friend is someone who they can trust and rely on. True friends do not go behind others back and talk badly about them or spread rumors about them. True friends are there to stick up for their friends against someone who talks badly about them. True friends are always there for someone when they need them no matter what. They can be there to talk, help, and provide transportation to somewhere or there just to listen. Everybody needs a friend that can listen to his or her problems and be there to help. It is a necessity in life because nobody needs to keep their emotions built up inside of them all the time.

Many people have many different true friends that they can rely on. It is important to have more than one true friend in their life, and many people have at least three or four true friends that they can trust. Having more than one true friend is important because if someone needs a few different views on a situation, they can go to many different friends for advice. However, some people only need one true friend.

Write my Essay on What is a True Friend? for me

True friends can also be people that just like hanging out with each other. Many people have friends that they like to go shopping at the mall with, or someone to just sit at home and watch TV or a movie with. This is important because everyone needs somebody that they can just relax with. Girls are more subject to the going shopping at the mall with friends because that is just what most girls like to do. They like to go out and spend money with their friends and buy unnecessary shoes and clothes. Guys fit more into the sitting at home category. On Sundays, most guys like to sit at home and watch football with friends.

As people get older, some friends move away and others stay. People grow apart from each other and some never talk to each other again. Everyone needs to cherish their friends while they are still there and still close. Thankfully, with the technology the world has today, friends can always stay in touch via email, telephone, or the postal service. Everybody makes new friends as they grow up. Many of them are fellow students at a university, fellow employees at a business, or people that live on the same street. Most will never see each other again after college and some will stay in touch throughout the years only to fade away into obscurity from each other. But true friends will never fade away and will always stay in touch to make sure that that bond between friends will never break.

In conclusion, true friends are hard to come by. If someone has the opportunity to hold on to a true friend, they should not pass it up. True friends form the backbone of who a person is and who a person will become. Without true friends, nobody would know who they are inside and what to do in life.

Please note that this sample paper on What is a True Friend? is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Trifles

Mrs. Peters

Character Analysis

Mrs. Peters is a very instrumental character in the plot of Susan Glaspell's Trifles. Not only does she help to discover the truth about a murder, but also makes the decision to conceal the evidence against the murderer. In the story, men have been called out to investigate the scene of John Wright's murder. The only suspect in the case is his wife, Minnie Foster Wright, who has already been taken in to the county jail. Mrs. Peters is the sheriff's wife. She initially has come along for the trip to help pack up Minnie's things. But when the men go offstage to collect clues, Mrs. Peters is left alone in Minnie's kitchen with Mrs. Hale, the neighbor's wife and it is here that the two women discover the "trifles", which are the clues that lead to understanding John Wright's death.

At first, Mrs. Peters is reserved and overly cautious about what she and Mrs. Hale find. The two ladies come across a quilt that Minnie was knotting before she was taken in to the police department for questioning. Mrs. Hale points out that the stitching is all very neat and even until the last few rows. When Mrs. Hale begins to pull the poor stitching out so she can redo it, Mrs. Hale becomes nervous and tries to stop her. Being the sheriff's wife, she knows not to tamper with evidence of any kind. Mrs. Hale ponders what could have upset Minnie to make her sew so crookedly, but Mrs. Peters tries to stomp that notion out by saying that she herself sometimes "sew(s) awful queer when (she's) just tired." She tries not to make assumptions, because she knows that is a dangerous thing to do in her husband's business. But soon, she begins to understand what really did take place in the house of John and Minnie Wright, and her attitude changes.

Mrs. Peters listens to Mrs. Hale talk about how the house was never cheerful and that was why Minnie's friends had always kept a difference. Mrs. Peters learns that although Mr. Wright was a good enough man, he was very cold and harsh, and almost impossible to live with. She listens to stories about how Minnie used to sing gaily until her husband had shut her up. When the body of a bird belonging to Minnie is found, killed in the same way that John Wright was killed, it becomes obvious to both of the women what has actually taken place. It is here that Mrs. Peters becomes pivotal to the story. If she and Mrs. Hale decide to let the men in on their findings, there will surely be enough evidence to convict Minnie Wright. As a sheriff's wife, she knows that she ought to turn Minnie in, but as a woman, Mrs. Peters feels an obligation to her kind. Mrs. Peters understands what Minnie had to endure during her marriage to John Wright and she and Mrs. Hale feel that that is enough to let her off the hook for murdering him. The women, now concealing vital evidence, decide to go on as if they have found nothing, and save Minnie from imprisonment. This steep of a commitment for the sake of a woman who she has never met, is quite a large undertaking, but it shows us how important having a support system between married women is to Mrs. Peters. Her sense of obligation and duty to her kind overpowers her knowledge of the law and her husband's position within the law.

Please note that this sample paper on Character Analysis:Trifles;Mrs.Peters is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Like any hall of fame, its inductees are the best in whatever

they do, from baseball or football to something like being President.

If you are a member of any hall of fame (including the one for the

Presidents), it means that you have done something special or have a

Buy custom Andrew Jackson term paper

certain quality about yourself that makes you worthy to be in a hall

of fame. My nominee for the Presidents hall of Fame is our seventh

President of the United States, Andrew Jackson. Ill go over his

presidency, focusing on both the highs and the lows of his two terms

in office, from 18-187. The issues that Ill focus on are states

rights, nullification, the tariff, the spoils system, Indian removal

and banking policies; these controversies brought forth strong rivalry

over his years of president. He was known for his iron will and fiery

personality, and strong use of the powers of his office that made his

years of presidency to be known as the Age of Jackson.

Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767, in a settlement on

the border of North and South Carolina. He was orphaned at age 14.

After studying law and becoming a member of the Bar in North Carolina

later he moved to Nashville Tennessee. Their he became a member of a

powerful political faction led by William Blount. He was married in

171 to Rachel Donelson Robards, and later remarried to him due to a

legal mistake in her prior divorce in 174.

Jackson served as delegate to Tenn. in the 176 Constitutional

convention and a congressman for a year (from 176-7). He was elected

senator in 177, but financial problems forced him to resign and

return to Tennessee in less than a year. Later he served as a

Tennessee superior court judge for six years starting in 178. In 1804

he retired from the bench and moved to Nashville and devoted time to

business ventures and his plantation. At this time his political

career looked over.

In 1814 Jackson was a Major General in the Tennessee Militia,

here he was ordered to march against the Creek Indians (who were

pro-British in the war of 181). His goal was achieved at Horseshoe

Bend in March of 1814. Eventually he forced All Indians from the area.

His victorys impressed some people in Washington and Jackson was put

in command of the defense of New Orleans. This show of American

strength made Americans feel proud after a war filled with military

defeats. Jackson was given the nickname Old Hickory, and was treated

as a national hero.

In 1817 he was ordered against the Seminole Indians. He pushed

them back into Spanish Florida and executed two British subjects.

Jackson instead that his actions were with approval of the Monroe

administration. His actions helped to acquire the Florida territory,

and he became a provisional governor of Florida that same year.

In 18 the Tennessee Legislature nominated him for president

and the following year he was elected the U.S. senate. He also nearly

won the presidential campaign of 184 however as a result of the

corrupt bargain with Henry Clay. Over the next four years the

current administration built a strong political machine with

nationalistic policies and a lack of concern of states rights. In 188

through a campaign filled with mud slinging on both sides, Andrew

Jackson became the seventh President to the United States.

Instead of the normal cabinet made up by the president, he

relied more on an informal group of newspaper writers and northern

politicians who had worked for his election. I believe that this made

him more in contact with the people of the United States, more in

contact with the public opinion and feelings toward national issues

President Jackson developed the system of rotation in office. This

was used to protect the American people from a development of a

long-standing political group by removing long-term office holders.

His enemies accused him of corruption of civil service for political

reasons. However, I think that it was used to insure loyalty of the

people in his administration. States rights played an important part

in Jacksons policys as president. In the case of the Cherokee

Indians vs. The State of Georgia, two Supreme Court decisions in 181

and 18 upholding the rights of the Cherokee nation over the State of

Georgia who had wanted to destroy Cherokee jurisdiction on its land

because gold had been found on it, and the state seeing the Indians as

tenants on state land decided to kick them out. Chief Justice John

Marshall ruled that Georgia had no jurisdiction to interfere with the

rights of the Cherokee and removal of them would violate treaties

between them and the U.S. Government. However, Jackson, not liking

these decisions was reported of saying John Marshall has made his

decision, now let him enforce it. It seems to me like a slap in

Justice Marshalls face, that Jackson was and always will be an Indian

fighter. I think he just liked pushing around the Indians because he

new that whatever resistance they had was no match for the U.S. army.

To emphasize his point, in 188 (one year after Jackson left office),

a unite of federal troops rounded up the 15,000 Cherokee who resisted

relocation and remained in Georgia and during the cold and rain of

winter forced them to march to their lands in the west, this was known

as the Trail of Tears since about 5% of the people died in route of

either disease, starvation, and exposure to the cold. Even though

Jackson wasnt in office at the time and is not a part of his

presidency, his effluence still existed through his predecessor,

Martin Van Burin.

The question of the tariff was a major controversy in the

United States around the years of his Presidency and his strong

support for a unified nation oven states rights would hold the country

together in this national crisis. Jackson had promised the south a

reduction in duties to levels established in 188, which were

acceptable to southerners as opposed to the higher rates since then.

In 18 his administration only sliced away a little bit of the

duties, not close to what the south expected he would do. In

retaliation of this insulting lack of concern of the Souths voice in

government, South Carolina acting on the doctrine of Nullification

which stated that the union was made up of the states and that the

states had the right to null or void a law if they didnt agree with

it, declared the federal tariff laws of 188 and 18 invalid and

prohibited collection of tariffs after February first of 18.

Jacksons response to this came on his Nullification Proclamation on

December 10, 18. He declared his intent to enforce the law and was

willing to seek and agreement in a lowering of tariffs. In 18

congress passed a compromise bill which set a new tariff, when the

other southern states accepted the new tariff the threat of S.

Carolina breaking away form the union was brought to a happy end.

The Second Bank of the United States was not made into an

issue of his election in 188 by Jackson. However he decided the bank,

which is not a government bank, but chartered by it in 186, had

failed to provide a stable currency, and had favored the Northern

states, and few loans were granted to the southern and western areas

because they were a larger risk and the bank didnt see it in its

interest to make such a gamble with its money. And in his mind the

bank was in violation on the Constitution. Even though the banks

charter wasnt due to expire until 186, Jacksons political enemies

pushed a bill through congress granting the banks re-charter, Jackson

vetoed the bill. The Bank issue was a major item in his re-election

in 18. In his second term Jackson decided to remove federal deposits

from the bank into pet banks which virtually took away the power

Nicholas Biddles power as president of the Second National Bank,

which left him and anti-Jackson people very upset with what they

called the abuse of his powers. The increase in loans from the state

chartered caused a land boom and gave the federal government a surplus

(which it split up amongst the states), the increase in loans brought

on the use of paper currency that was issued by the state banks,

Jackson prohibited the use of paper money to by federal land or pay

federal debts. This demand for coins called specie led to many bank

failures in the Panic of 187. I dont think he knew what he got

himself into when he did this, and could of handled the situation a

little better, but not all the blame should fall on his shoulders,

because it wasnt his fault the private state-chartered banks issued

the paper money when they didnt have the specie to back it up.

Jacksons foreign policy showed a strong interest in making

the French to pay long-overdue spoliation claims and reopening the

British West Indian Trade. Even thought he personally agreed with the

rebellion of Texas against Mexico. He didnt recognize the Lone Star

republic until the day before he left office in 187, and left the

problem of Texas annexation to Martin Van Buren. Even though Jackson

switched support form his successor Martin Van Buren to James K. Polk

(probably due to Van Burins failed economic policy). Jackson was a

powerful voice in the Democratic party even after retired. He died on

June 8, 1845 on his plantation, the Hermitage, in Nashville Tennessee.

Andrew Jackson was the first peoples president. This comes

from hisyouth in a frontier territory and his people qualities

which helped him to be more touch with the people of the United

States, and therefore the people of the United States took a more

active role in the Government. He even went so far as to call himself

the elected representative of all American people. I think that

Jacksons strengthening of the powers of the presidency are the

biggest influence to this day. He used the power of the veto 1 times

(more times than all of his successors combined). And his use of the

powers of removal and of executive orders made a standard for a modern

American Presidency. I only wish that their was a candidate like that

running for election in 6. The closest to someone like Jackson would

of probably been Colin Powel, unfortunately he decided not to run.

When you gave this project, I though Jackson was a mean tempered

Indian fighter who found his way to office because he took over

Florida and defended New Orleans Successfully. But I grew to learn

that he was really a great president and did a lot for the presidency

of the United States of America.

I have never been a strong student in history but the few things that teachers have drilled into my head throughout my years of education I remember. One of those topics happens to be the American revolution and how it was started. I have always thought that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were the two strong men behind this war. That they were the two men that we should thank for the freedom of our country. I guess since history is so detailed and so many people have contributed to where we are today that teachers tend to leave out some people who may not be as famous, but who are just as important. This book made me realize that the "little" men had a lot to do with the revolution.

Holton does give credit to Washington and Jefferson, but he helps show how the Shawnees, Cherokee and other natives, farmers, along with slaves and colonial governors made Virginia the place it became in 1776. After reading this I believe that the Indians were the main group pushing for independence. The Cherokees and Shawnees came together to trade and help push for independence because it was their land they were defending. Virginia's leaders at the time were desperate men who thought the only way to keep their status of upper class was to declare their independence from Great Britain.

All the groups involved worked for a common goal of freedom. The African Americans were trying to be freed from slavery, the natives were fighting for their land and unity based on a common color. The common folk wanted a greater voice of opinion in public matters and the Virginian Leaders wanted to enforce boycotts. As Holton states on page 1, "Activists of all stripes found that an effective strategy for building political unity was to urge their followers to embrace broader identities." Despite every groups difference, in color, religion and beliefs, they all had common strategies and believed if they stood together with the same goal in mind they stood a better chance of achieving their dream.

In the beginning of the book Holton talks about how the natives do not want to give up their land, and that the British do not want to spend a lot of money to fight the natives for the land. While at the same time the Virginians were angry at the imperial trade policy because it effected their tobacco plantations and owning slaves. Each group showed how they are angry about not having the freedom to do what they want. Then the slaves and farmers seem to frighten the Virginians into declaring their independence because there seemed to be no other way. All of this seemed to go unnoticed in many history classes, because the farmers and slaves never seem to get credit for pushing the Virginians into declaring Independence.

Holton seems to bring reality into play. Did everyone really think that Washington and Jefferson were so heroic? After reading this book I realized that they too were scared, confused and divided as was everyone else in the colonies. Washington and Jefferson did have to face many challenges from the slaves, natives and farmers, so they do deserve credit for the Independence, but also do the slaves, farmers and natives who pushed to be free. This war would have never turned out the same if everyone living in Virginia was not aiming towards the same goal of being free. Everyone did not exactly what they set out to get, but they did get the freedom from Great Britain.

William Sidney Porter, the man who created "O. Henry," the most Famous American pen name (second only to that of Samuel L. Clemens' "Mark Twain") wrote many short stories. O. Henry was born in North Carolina on September 11th, 186. It is an amazing that he wrote many of his first stories while in prison. His first short story ever to be published was, in fact, published while he was being tried before he was sent to the federal penitentiary in Ohio. O. Henry is best remembered for "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Ransom of Red Chief." Henry had a "trademark" in his short stories. He was known for his surprise endings, which would jump at the unsuspecting reader. O. Henry applied this trick by not giving away all the information the reader needed to fully understand what is going on in the story. In "The Enchanted Kiss" it was no different. In "The Enchanted Kiss" Henry made use of all his genius to create a story with a surprise ending that almost seemed unreal to what he had built the reader to believe.

"The Enchanted Kiss," a romance with a twist, a one-sided romance, is the story of a single night in the life of Samuel Tansey. The story begins with Tansey playing billiards with several of his friends. As the clock ticked along he dreamed about the many courage's acts he had so many times accomplished in the realms of his imagination. When the clock struck ten he got up to leave. His friends in playful manner joked with him about his leave at such an early time. They said

"What's you hurry, Tansey?" called one. "Got another engagement?"

"Tansey got an engagement!" echoed another. "Not on you life. Tansy's got to get home at ten by Mother Peek's orders."

"It's no such thing," Chimed in a pale youth, taking a large cigar from his mouth; "Tansey's afraid to be late because Miss Katie might come downstairs to unlock the door, and kiss him in the hall."

But had they only known that he had for some time secretly been in love with that young lady, Miss Katie Peek. The other fellows played an d talked with her freely but Tanseys character always seemed to get in the way. He barely said Good Evening or Good night. He lived his life in love; so secretly in love. Dreaming tortures dreams in silence because he was afraid to show his feelings.

But [that night] to-night the gibes of his associates had stung him to a feeling of forward, lawless mutiny; a defiant, challenging, atavistic recklessness. Spirit of corsair, adventurer, lover, poet, Bohemian, possessed him.

That night he felt her as fare as the stars in the heavens above and not an inch closer. He, more than ever, felt his constant companion, loneliness; that dreaded shadow following his tired steps. He walked and found a tavern and he drank. He never drank, but tonight, tonight it was different. He drank his share then walked by his shadow through the dark streets of his town. He walked aimlessly for some time till he bumped into a dead-end. Then he sat on the footsteps of a door. He fell in to the arms of slumber and remained in them for some time.

Then he woke-up and walked to where he had come from. At the door stood Captain Peek with a carriage. They talked for a few moments…

…then a white-clad figure sprung out of the carriage, and a shrill voice Katies voice- sliced the air Sam! Sam! help me, Sam!

He sprung towards her and saved her. Took her in his arms and kissed her…

-violets! electricity! caramels! champagne! Here was the attainment of a dream that brought no disenchantment.

She told him the men that were taking her wanted to eat her. He did not take her seriously. Why would they want to eat her? As he was wondering, still enthralled by that enchanted kiss, he was struck on the back of his head and fell deep into another sleep.

Again he woke-up, back at the door-steps at the dead-end, and wondered through the streets until he came to the market place. There he stopped and carried a friendly conversation with one of his old comrades, a Mexican. They both talked about everything and nothing, then, the conversation took an unsuspecting turn. Tanseys Mexican friend asked him if he would like to live forever. The Mexican went on to tell Tansey that he had to eat young women with chili in a certain way to obtain that immortal life. Then Tansey remembered Katies words Theyre going to eat me, Sam. Just then a women ran out of the Mexicans tent saying I have released her, you will kill no more. Then there was another scream and there stood Katie with her arms still bound. Once again Tansey rushed and saved her…

…and then, for the second time that night he kissed Katie Peek tasted again the sweetness, the wonder, and the thrill of it, attained once more the maximum of his incessant dreams.

Just then the Mexican struck him with a knife between the shoulders and he knew nothing more of what happened.

Once again he opened hi eyes and found himself at the steps of that door at the dark dead-end.

Each excursion that he had made had led to the one paramount finale to Katie and that kiss, which survived and grew strong and intoxicating in his memory. Clearly, Fate was holding up to him the mirror that night, calling him to observe what awaited him at the end of whichever road he might take. He immediately turned, and hurried homeward.

He was hesitant in his going. He thought the Miss Peek would be waiting for him, and he didnt want her to wait for him, she was. She waited for him trying to seem uninterested. Then he got home and…

-a maid with unkissed, curling, contemptuous lips slowly lifted the lamp chimney and allowing the wick to ignite; then waving a scornful and abjuring hand toward the staircase-

Then the unhappy Tansey went up fro the night without that wonderful enchanted kiss.

The way O Henry placed himself as the narrator greatly contributed to the story. O Henry placed himself in an omniscient position in which he new everything. He could have, from the beginning of the story, given more solid clues as to the outcome of his whole plot but that would have ruined the effect he set the reader up in. O Henry only gave very petit hints as to how the story was going to unravel. Surprise endings were of common nature in his writing and The Enchanted Kiss was going to be no exception.

Please note that this sample paper on The Enchanted Kiss by "O Henry" is for your review only. The movie version of this story and the original written version vary quite a bit. One significant difference was the change in the character of Ethan. I think that Edith Wharton's image of Ethan, which was present in the book, was much different than what was shown in the movie. The movie was good, but it did not depict the events of the book very accurately.

In the movie, Ethan was much more vocal about his feelings compared to in the book. He rarely said a word to Mattie in the novel, but in the movie they were bot garrulous. The kitchen scene in the movie, which in the book showed how they knew each other's feeling without them being said or obviously shown, involved much interaction between the two. From the beginning of the movie, Ethan is never very shy to talk to Mattie unlike in the book where he hardly speaks to her. In this kitchen scene the cat breaks zeenas dish where as in the book, Mattie herself is actually the one who breaks zeenas favorite dish.

Although the beginning and end of the book are told from a narrator's point of view, most of the novel concerns Ethan Frome's actions and view on life. However in the movie, the character of Ethan Frome was not the crux. One scene that caught my attention right away, when watching the movie was the very first scene. In the movie, the narrator comes to starkfield as a Minister and sees Ethan from in the train station, differing from the book where the story begins in a post office when Ethan picks up a package from the post office. The narrator in the book was an engineer, stuck in starkfield because of a strike.

Some of the changes in the book seemed to make an enormous change, some were good and others were bad. The good changes seemed to make the movie take another path that the book had never taken. In the movie the minister sees that the whole town is ostracizing Ethan Frome, but in the book the narrator never even realizes that there is something else going on besides him being crippled that the town people seems to find. This change made the movie more interesting, because it brought the antipathy that existed between Ethan and the people in starkfield.

His communication was not only different with Mattie; it was also different towards the people in Starkfield. Instead of just minding his own business, as he did in the book, he often said things to bystanders who looked upon him with curiosity. There was one scene that was mostly the same from book to novel, though it was not very important to the story line. It was when Ethan asked Mr. Hale for money.

Some of the changes in the book seemed to make an enormous change, some were good and others were bad. The good changes seemed to make the movie take another path that the book had never taken. In the movie the minister sees that the whole town is ostracizing Ethan Frome, but in the book he never even realizes that there is nothing going on besides him being crippled that the town seems to find. This change made the movie more interesting, because it brought the antipathy that existed between Ethan and the people in starkfield. I think both the movie and the book were good because each followed a different path to arrive to the conclusion.

Organizational culture can be defined as a system of shared beliefs and values that develops within an organization and guides the behavior of its members. It includes routine behaviors, norms, dominant values, and a feeling or climate conveyed. The purpose and function of this culture is to help foster internal integration, bring staff members from all levels of the organization much closer together, and enhance their performance.

However, there seems to be a widely held misconception that throughout an organization or within a specific division there is only one uniform culture that exists. This definition does not seem adequate because it fails to recognize that in many organizations there are quite often groups that are unique of the dominant culture. They may have values that are not consistent, or outwardly reject the culture as a whole, yet at the same time they are still able to maintain their position within the firm. In addition, it has been a personal experience that in many organizations strong organizational culture can in fact be negative, and in fact actually damage the performance of their employees. The perception is due to the fact that in many organizations the culture can act as a barrier to the employee to gain status within the organization.

This perception may have also had a lot to due with the nature of the position that was held at the company. This company seemed to fit the criteria and meet the description of a "Fortress Culture? This may have been the result of the fact that it business was in the highly competitive field of financial services. The management was very preoccupied with figures such as sales, growth and earnings, and they treated the staff as a commodity that could easily be replaced. As a contract employee there was little in the way of job security and essential no possibility to be rewarded for good performance. The theory is inadequate because it does not recognize the fact that in many businesses today, firms no longer retain all of their staff on a full-time basis. It simply assumes that many of the individuals are full time staff members and at least have short-term job certainty. It fails to recognize the fact that by having many individuals that are working in organizations as part time or contract staff is not really given the opportunity, or they do not wish to become part of the organizational culture. Hence they elect not to internalize the company's culture and in turn establish their own distinct sub-culture of individuals that share their own beliefs.

Many of the fail points within the organization could be traced directly back to its socialization process. The socialization process is the process by which an organization brings new employees into its culture. The older members of the society transmit to younger members the social skills and knowledge needed to function effectively in the organization. This process of the organization develops the skills and competencies needed to perform the new job. Although the company seemed to be successful in the first two steps the remainder of the process seemed to be inconsistent with this theory.

The company followed the traditional pattern of selecting potential candidates through the use of trained recruiters and a standardized procedure. These recruiters looked for a variety of specific traits in each candidate that they believed would make them suitable for the position at the firm. Those individuals that did not meet these strict criteria were not considered for the position. The organization also had many similarities with the next step in which the successful candidates were placed in many challenging environments, or impossible situations to test their commitment to the position. The theory then suggests that at this point in the process those individuals who are not willing to accept the culture would be removed and all others allowed to proceed. Yet this does not seem to be adequate for two reasons. To begin with the theory does not account for the fact that in reality many individuals to not actual accept the norms and values but they simply give off the appearance that they do in an attempt to retain their position. Quite often individuals never really become part of the dominant culture yet merely they try to give that impression so that they are not dismissed. Secondly, it falls short in the case of many individuals that have been hired as a contract employee. Not having the certainty and job security of a full time staff member makes individuals less open towards the organization's norms and values. By not having the confidence in their future at the firm individuals are likely to be very reluctant to make the effort and try to become part of the team, and eventually the firm's culture.

In addition the candidates did not receive the extensive training that was needed to help develop their skills and perform the routine tasks of this very demanding position. This may have been a result of the fact that the company was unsure whether they would retain the services of the new staff. This in turn made many of the new recruits feel inadequate when compared to their full-time counterparts. Hence they did not feel part of the team and part of the organization. It also had the unintentional effect of reinforcing the feeling among many individuals that the company was not committed to them and that they did not want to make the investment in their training since they were uncertain whether they would keeping them as members of the organization.

There was also the feeling among the staff members that if the company was not committed to them for a specific length of time what importance is there for them to make the effort and try to belong to the company's culture. The socialization theory simply concluded that the staff and the firm would work together in promoting these shared beliefs and the only recourse of this system did not work was to dismiss those individuals that deviated from the norm. It did not recognize that there could be failings within the process that may have required change on the part of the organization.

What may have also been a contributing factor to the failure of the socialization process, and an element that is not discussed in the theory, is how the socialization process works when the field of business is of a very competitive nature. In this case is does not seem that many of the older staff members would be willing to accept the new staff and help them develop their skills. This is due to the fact that if the new members performed the skills of the position better and more efficiently than the older staff it would have the effect of undermining the older staff members job security. It seemed more common that the existing staff would erect barriers for the new staff. They would do this in an attempt to secure the permanence of their position.

In this case if the organization wanted to maintain competition between its staff members what may have been a more appropriate action would be for their socialization process to be much more rapid. This is because it would have had the likely effect of reducing much of the uncertainty, and surrounding the new position. This is especially important for those individuals that were on a contract basis since they believed ahead of time that they were only going to remain at the position for a very short time, and thus there was no reason for them to be very productive.

Much of the uncertainty surrounding the position was also a reflection of the managerial style of the department head. He believe that the organization could maintain its identity and culture by constantly removing employees who deviated from his narrow and rigid opinion of accepted behavior and job performance. He believed that uncertainty in the organizations would make individuals within the workplace be more productive and remain in line with the firm's notion of accepted norms and behaviors. The manager achieved this by regularly relying on firings, fear, and quilt to build the organization. In fact, this attitude had the exact opposite outcome. In prolonging the socialization period and by constantly making the individual feel inadequate the individual never really felt part of the culture. As a result these individuals quite often did not make the effort of buying into the values and norms of the company. This resulted in job dissatisfaction, low work motivation, tension, high turnover, rejection of values (which in many cases resulted in other subcultures), and an overall lack of commitment to the firm.

The company would have been much more successful if the manager were to try and promote the culture in a more positive way. This could be achieved by trying to establish a sense of pride and enthusiasm in the firm rather that requiring each individual to strictly adhere to a narrow and rigid behavior. In doing so the firm would more likely have a much more devote staff since they feel more comfortable about their position in the firm and the future. The staff would be encouraged by the fact that they feel part of the team and hence they would be more proactive, productive and add value to the company.

The theory seems to adequately explain how the organization failed to achieve their goal through the example of sharedness and intensity. Sharedness refers to the degree to which the organizational members have the same core values. The intensity is the level of commitment that the members of the organization make to the core values. Two major factors, orientation and rewards affect the degree of sharedness. In order for people to share the same cultural values they must know what these values are. This can be directly linked to their orientation and training programs. However, it is also significantly affected by rewards. When organizations offer promotions, raises, recognition, to those who adhere to the core values, it helps other individuals within the organization understand what the values are.

The degree of intensity can also be connected to the reward structure. When individuals realize that they will be rewarded for doing things the "Corporate Way?their desire to do so increases dramatically. Therefore, as the theory suggests if individuals, like contract staff or part-timers, did not feel part of the reward structure, because they did not receive the perks of the position or equal pay. In addition, these members of the organization did not also receive any non-financial rewards either.

Family life is the basic unit of our society. For example, how the distribution of roles are spread between the different family members. Apparently there are some similaritites between family life in Australia and Switzerland. For example, in Sitzerland, as in Australia, the family forms a strong union in which every member has to make their contribution. So, a comparison of family life in Australia and Switzerland reveals a lot of similarities but only a few differences.

Firstlyt, the role of the woman in family life in Australia and Switzerland has several similarities. Most Australian women are housewives and do home duties, such as cleaning and cooking, as do Swiss women. Hoever, it is also very common, that housewives in both countries work full or part-time. About 40% of the women in both countries have jobs in addition to their home duties. Although the women are working, they have to find time to look after the children and assist them with their homework and their personal issues. Hoewever, the difference is that Australians start to have children earlier, because they marry when they are around , whereas the Swiss marry when they are around and so they have children late.

Secondly, the mens roles in family life are similar in a number of ways in both countries. Australian men go to work the whole day, as do Swss men. Just a minoritiy of Australians and Swiss stay at home and do the housework and look after the children. However, there is a difference in the number of children. Australinas have about three or four, while the Swiss have one or two.

Thirdly, the childrens roles in family life are very similar too. Aussie kids get a weekly allowance equal to Swiss kids. In both countries the are raised to be independent and self-sufficient early in life and become involved in some household chores. Similarly to Switzerland, the Australian children start to move out of the home at the time the begin their studies or work, and often share an apartment with other students. The relationship between children and partents is very close in both countries and they spend a lot of time together. However, there is a differnce at which time the become adults by law. Swss children become adultws by law on their 18th birthday. In contrast, the Australian children become adults by law on their 1st birthday.

Despite the similarities, there is a great difference in the family homes. Most of the houses in Australia are made of bricks with atile roof. On the other hand, in Switzerland they are made of timber and have a white surface. The outside walls are adorned with window boxes of geraniums and other flowers. Similarly, both of them have fenced yards and look neat and orderly. Most Australians and Swiss live in urban areas. In Switzerland, its very common for families to live in apartments, but in Australia most families live in houses.

In conclusion, the family life in Australia is not very different from the family life in Switzerland. What does New Mexico Architectural Style mean? The early settlers in New Mexico came from Mexico and Spain in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Don Juan de Onate colonized the area above Espanola in 158, one hundred eight years after Columbus came to the Americas. The early settlers of New Mexico were completely familiar with adobe construction methods, which had been developed six to eight thousand years by Moors, who came to Spain in the fifth century and brought the system with them from Egypt and the Middle East.

According to nineteenth-century descriptions Hispanic New Mexican houses are very similar in character to the Mediterranean house. All the rooms opened into the court, and there was a porch or portal running around all four- court walls.

The "Spanish-pueblo" (10s and 10s) is the earliest form and prevalent in Spain at the time of settlement of New Mexico. This is a style where the walls are in adobe from two feet thick to thirty or thirty six inches thick. The relationship between the wall and his thick depend of the height of the wall. The floor of the early houses were in adobe mud smoothes by hand and often were painted with bloom from animals producing a dark, black brown color.

For the roof structure, pine lays across the walls. A layer of straws was laid over this and then about eighteen to twenty-four inches of adobe mud applied. The surface was almost flat,

The territorial style is a combination of several elements. Walls were of adobe with burned brick firewall. Those walls were plastered with lime-sand stucco, which is much better than the cement stucco used today. Windows in the territorial style was set outside face of the wall. The beams were often square with sawn or split boards laid over The burned clay tile roof, typical of modern Spain and Mexico was not found in New Mexico before about 1880.

The New Mexico Architectural Style is rich in details, when artist form other parts of the country invaded the Taos area in the late 1800s and Santa Fe in the 10s a rich creative force as added to the local craft of building.

First, Windows in Pueblo Style were small, barred with wooden gratings and covered with heavy wooden because of the need for defense against Indians and protection from the elements. Sheets of mica were sometimes used between the bars to admit light in the daytime and protection of the wind and cold during the nighttime.

The coming of the railroad brought new architectural styles such as hardware and clear window glass, in that moment window became larger and more decorative. Fancy iron windows became from Mexico in the early 100s. They painted curtains and other design on glass windows. Some churches painted colorful imitation stained glass on windowpanes.

Second, the Spanish colonists for mission churches introduced wooden doors into New Mexico. Before this, blankets or skins were used to keep the cold out of the house. These heavy doors generally lacked metal hinges an arrangement that allowed rotating; they were made from six to eight panels fastened together. Doors in the early days were quite small, only two feet wide and four to five feet high. Most were undecorated

With the arrival of the railroad in the late nineteenth century, New Mexico Architectural began to change drastically. The true frame and panel doors from colonial times were replaced by doors made of strips molding nailed onto milled lumber boards -1/" thick by 4-10 " wide. The native carpenter became to create new and interesting designs. Doors were decorated with elaborated design.

Local carpenter began to construct beautiful doors for adobe farmhouses they elaborated and create old classical styles, using their own variations with sufficient quantities of tools. Actually these doors are known as Penascos doors and the design vary from village to village, and each doors is different from the other.

Finally, The colors used to paint the decorative details on New Mexico's architectural are similar to the colors of the environment such as the intense blue of the sky, the reds found in the sunset, orange in the mountain and the subtler colors in the desert.

Little is known about to paint during the early colonial years, but with few exceptions wood surface were left with protective varnish made from pine resin. The first documented example was in Village Senteros in where they began making retablos (pictures in wood surface) for the churches, using water-soluble pigments, made from different things. In the same way, some furniture and architectural features were painted during this period but after 1880s paints became available.

During the Spanish- Pueblo period of the 10s and 10s was the beginning of the Santa Fe Style, the use of bright colors on architectural details blossomed. However today, most of the gates and doors are not painted; some are left natural, allowed the beauty of the wood and excelling the design to dominate.

Many different kind of paint are used on the architectural features. In exteriors, weather-resistant oil base house paint is popular. In interior is using anything from weathersoluble tempera or an artist oil paint.

In conclusion, New Mexico Architecture Style has a lot of history and one of the way to know about New Mexico State is to know about his architecture because we can see what happened and happen right know. Each part in the architecture has history, windows, doors, and colors are the most important things during the environment in the New Mexico Architectural Style because they show us all the process of our state. While there are many fundamental themes in The Merchant of Venice, only one seems to drive the play to its inevitable conclusion. There is a constant theme of self interest versus love. On the surface, this seems to be the dividing factor between the Christians and the Jew, as Shylock is supposed to only care about money, profits, and such, while the rest of the cast value human relationships more.

Men such as Antonio and Bassiano lend money without interest or even thought at times, and end up taking far more risks for those they care about. "He lends out money gratis, and brings down | The rate of usance here with us in Venice."(1..45) Shylock complains to the audience in an aside. Antonio agrees to Shylock's nasty terms simply because he loves Bassiano that much.

Further on in the play, Shylock reportedly runs through the streets crying "My daughter! O my ducats!" (.8.15). Through this statement he seems to value his money at least as much as his daughter and this suggests that his love balanced with his greed. But as in several of Shakespeare's plays, everything is not always as it seems.

In act three scene one, Shylock laments the loss of a ring, given to him by his deceased wife, which his daughter had stolen and sold for a mere monkey. He doesn't miss the value of the ring but it's sentimental value, vowing "I would not have given it for a wilderness of monkeys." (.1.100) Too, his stubbornness in only accepting a pound of flesh in payment of Antonio's debt, even when offered "thrice thy money", shows that not everything can be measured in ducats to him.

His supposed Christian betters are not any more consistant. Bassiano first seeks to marry Portia, not for love or her beauty, but because her money will get him out of his huge debts. He asks Antonio to lend him money as an investment, though Antonio insists that the money is lent out of love, not business. He even has to go into debt, something he never does, to supply the ducats.

Thou knowst that all my fortunes are at sea;

Neither have I money nor commodity

To raise a present sum; therefore go forth,

Try what my credit can in Venice do;

That shall be rackd, even to the uttermost,

To furnish thee to Belmont to fair Portia.

Go presently inquire, and so will I,

Where money is; and I no question make

To have it of my trust or for my sake. (1.1.0)

Near the end of the play, after both men have been married, they are so careless as to give away one wedding ring and allow the other to be stolen. Though they unwittingly "give" them to their wives, this illustrates their self intrest far more than their love for their wives. If they can so easily give away the symbols of their marriages, then they must value something far more than love.

Perhaps the most famous speech of the play, Shylock says that Jews are as much a human being as a Christian, but other hate them just the same. Antonio and the others do not trust (in this case perhaps rightfully) and revile Shylock simply because he is a Jew.

Shylock refuses to be swayed at the end of the play, to offer mercy to Antonio, because no mercy or kindness was shown to him in the past. The Christian charcters speak of such things as love, mercy, and kindness, but seldom practice these morals outside of their own circles.

Compare the opening sequences of 'Strangers on a train' (151) and Billy Elliot (000).

The two films are set in very different periods and locations from each other, and will vary to a large extent on the acting, the use of dialogue and the direction of the motion picture. The direct impacts that both pieces have in the opening scenes are very diverse in the sense that the cinematography and music are engaged in a very dissimilar manner. However, the opening scenes also are alike in the fact that they introduce the main characters and set the scene for they rest of the film.

The themes in the two films are very different, the issues in the Strangers on a Train being the crisscrossing and the themes of Billy Elliot being the struggle to fight for what you believe in, but more so to stand up to your fears and not be knocked down by what other people think. The only real major theme in strangers on a train is the crisscrossing or double cross. This is referred to near the beginning of the film before the characters meet when quite a long shot from the front of the train is taken of the railway track crossing over many other tracks in the sense that they are crisscrossing. Also Guy Haynes owns a lighter that is focused on quite a lot by the cameras and the photographers, which has a pair of tennis racquets that cross over each other on the face side. The conversation between the two gentlemen nearing Guy Haynes stop where he will get off the train, is also about crisscrossing. However this is not quite as subtle as Bruno talks about wanting to murder his father, and tries to make Guy tell us the name of someone he wants to get shot of. Guy eventually tells him his wife.

Write my Essay on Compare the opening sequences of 'Strangers on a train' (1951) and Billy Elliot (2000). for me

Loose ends

The relationships between the characters in Billy Elliot seem very frayed as he has quite a hard life to lead, whereas in the other film under study the characters Bruno Anthony and Guy Haynes appear to get on quite well. The characters that dont get on well with each other in this film are Guy Haynes and his wife. The location of Billy Elliot is in a poor terrace of houses that is in a city in the north of the country (Newcastle or sommin) and is in modern day, approximately in the 180s. The location of Strangers on a Train in the section we have seen is mostly on a train that stops at a town on its way. The period of the film is around the 150s. Billy leads a very hard life but the film seems very life like and real whereas Strangers on a Train does not have this quality. Whilst there is a constant battle going on outside about the miners strike, which is where Billys dad and brother work (down the mines), there is also a constant conflict inside the house between the family (appears to be). Conflict in Strangers on a Train between Guy Haynes and his wife.
