Marxism and Marxism-Leninism

When people think of Marxism, they relate it to communism, which they then mostly relate with poverty, tyranny and dictatorship. People associate communism with cruel rulers like Stalin or Fidel Castro. The corrupt poverty that enslaves nations into poverty and the rule of one man was not at all what the creator of communism had in mind. In fact, it is the complete opposite.

Karl Marx, a philosopher/political thinker was the man who created Marxism, better known as communism. Marx wrote the "Communist Manifesto" in which he outlines and states his ideas of what is to be expected in the future in relation to government. Marx couldn't get published, though, and was a poor man, so his wealthy supporter and friend who published him was Friedrich Engel. Marx wrote that he believed that all history went through stages, and that all history was created due to the struggles between classes. These stages that Marx believed in refer first to an uprising of the working class. During the times that Marx lived, the working class people were working under harsh conditions and making low pay. Marx said that eventually, this class would rebel against the wealthier upper class. Then he believed that they would take control of the means of production and that everyone would own it equally, creating a socialistic society. Eventually, this society would be so perfect that there would be no need for government. Marx refrained from using the term communism often because he reserved it for the final stage of perfection.

Some people took to these ideals, though Marx died living in poverty. The most famous example was the first group that followed his ideals, the Russian Bolshevik's. Lenin was the leader of the Russian Revolution against the oppressive monarchy. The Bolshevik Party was determined to do good for the people following the standards that Karl Marx had idealized. The only difference is that the Bolshevik's disagreed with Marx's idea that eventually and over time they would achieve the final stage of communism. This is when Marxism-Leninism is created, when the Russian Revolution took place.

Custom writing service can write essays on how you suck

The Bolshevik's adopted Marx's idea but simply "sped up" the process by taking action. They thought that all those stages were a waste of time and took too long to obtain perfection. So their solution to speeding up the road to communism was, in this case, to take arms and get rid of the Russian dynasty. This revolution was a success and Lenin overthrew the monarchy and implemented socialism. Lenin and the Bolshevik's were initially looking out for the interest of the common good, but after a short period of time, the idea of having full control over Russia went straight to Lenin's head and he became a corrupt tyrant. Again Russia was experiencing difficult times when the Soviet Union was created and a lot of people were living in poverty again. The means of production were centralized, but the people of the country saw very little of the revenues the country made.

Due to this corruption that was now ruling in the Soviet Union claiming to be a communist country, people associated communism with the actions Lenin took. Corruption, tyranny, dictatorship, and lawlessness were all things associated with communism.

So in the end, Marx didn't intend to create totalitarian regimes, his ideal was to create a government that would have the best interests of everyone in mind creating a perfect society and no need for government. Then Lenin, being the first to put these ideals into action, turned these ideals into excuses to be absolute dictator of Russia. The ideal of communism that Marx had envisioned was far from achieved. And that is what communism will remain an ideal, not a reality

Leonardo Pisano, or better known as Leonardo Fibonacci, was born in Pisa, Italy around 1170. His father was Guilielmo Bonacci, a secretary of the Republic of Pisa and responsible for directing the trading colony in Bugia, Algeria. It was here that Fibonacci received most of his education.

Some time after 11, Fibonacci moved to Bugia with his father. His father wanted Leonardo to become a merchant there and arranged for his instruction in calculation techniques, especially involving the Hindu-Arabic numerals. Soon, Leonardo was helping his father carry out business for the Pisan republic, and was sent on trips to Egypt, Syria, Greece, Sicily, and Provence. Leonardo took these trips as an opportunity to learn the different mathematical techniques used in these regions. Leonardo ended his travels around the year 100 and returned to Pisa, where, for the next twenty-five years, he worked on his own mathematical compositions. The five main works of this period are the Liber abbaci (10, 18), Practica geometriae (10-11), Flos (15), and the Liber quadratorum. (15) After 18, not much is known about his life, except he has awarded an honor in Pisa for his achievements. He presumably died after 140 in Pisa. During a time when scholarship was not noticed, Fibonacci's sophisticated mathematical achievements made him clearly recognized around the entire world.

Fibonacci's first work, the Liber abbaci, means the book of calculations. In the Liber abbaci, Fibonacci presents an overview of basic arithmetic and algebra. It also examines root extraction (GCF) and a variety of word problems, some which are similar to Egyptian problems. The Liber abbaci also contains many practical problems for merchants, ranging from calculations of interest, to problems concerning currency exchange rates, and profit margins. Also it contained a number of puzzles, including the famous reproduction of rabbits, which led to the Fibonacci sequence. In Fibonacci's second work, Practica geometriae, he drew heavily from the works of ancient Greek masters, including Euclid and Archimedes. Fibonacci focused mainly on quadratic equations, which is undoubtedly his best skill. Included are many instructions given for practical people. Simplified instructions and easily read tables take the place of complicated computations. The work Flos was sent to Emperor Fredrick II as a response to questions set forth by Johannes of Palermo, a member of his court. Fibonacci solved the problems, and concluded that the solution was not a whole number, fraction, or irrational number. But he does go on to provide an approximation for the solution. In the Liber quadatorum, Fibonacci obtain many achievements in the number theory. He finds methods to find Pythagorean triples, and defines a special class of numbers called a congruum.

Some interesting anecdotes Fibonacci were and are compiled in many textbooks. His most famous, the Fibonacci sequence 1,1,,,5,8,1…He found the set of equations 1=1^ , 1+=^ , and suggested the formula 1+ (n-1)= n. Fibonacci showed there is no pair x and y such that x+y and x-y are both perfect squares. He also showed that x4-y4 cannot be square.

The best known of Fibonacci's achievements is definitely the Fibonacci sequence. Fibonacci numbers have applications in modern mathematics, and are often used in modern computer science. Fibonacci was a master of algebra in the east, and scholar in the west. He has been called the first great mathematician of the Christian West. Fibonacci introduced a system of knowledge we still use today, and provided a foundation for the modern number theory and many other useful parts of mathematics.

Night

"Where is God now? (A man behind me asked)…He is hanging here on this gallows…" This is where the Holocaust left young Elie. It left him with a feeling that there is no God, or if there is, he is not as wonderful as everyone has been proclaiming that he is. The story begins in the small town of Sighet near Transylvania were Elie lived with his parents and two little sisters. Elie studied the Talmud during the day and spent his evenings in Synagogue praying. His life revolved around his undying faith and love for God. He loved God and the Jewish faith so much that he often cried while he was praying.

He and his family lived without fear and in happiness until some of the people of Sighet were deported. One of them, Moche the Beadle, returned with stories of Jews being slaughtered and babies being tortured and used as firing practice. The stories were dismissed as crazy and they told themselves that they were all safe. They believed they were in the peaceful hands of God. Unfortunately, in 144 German troops moved into their town. They set up ghettos and controlled their lives with fear. The people of Sighet were forced to leave their homes. They were packed into cattle wagon trains and given buckets of water and bread to eat. They stayed in the train for many days and were not allowed to get out to go to the bathroom so they were condemned to live amidst filth. Some people started going crazy. One old woman screamed almost the entire time about flames and burning flesh. Little did everyone know that what she was yelling about was the fate of everyone in her company. When they finally arrived in Birkenau, they exited the train to the smell of burning flesh and the sight of smoke and flames. When they got into the camp Elie and his father were separated from his mother and two little sisters. They did not realize immediately that they would never see them again. After they were separated they were told to march in a line that was heading directly toward a tremendous hole in the ground in which the charred remains of Jewish corpses could be seen. It is then that Elie begins to wonder why it is that he has been blessing God. The people around him had begun to say a prayer for the dead and for themselves. He wonders why he should bother? No God that he knows would let such evil go on, therefore there must be no God. People around him were asking the same questions. Others told them that God was testing their faith and if they kept themselves strong and survived for as long as they could, God would be pleased and they would be blessed. They continued marching straight up to the edge of the ditch with faith in their hearts and were suddenly told to turn left into barracks. Elie and his father were given tips by men that had been in the camp longer about how the Germans were working and how to survive. They were told what you had to say and how you had to act in order to stay alive longer. All Elie cared about was not being separated from his father. For over a year they were forced to live and work in extreme conditions. They were made to walk miles on little sleep and even less food for continuous hours and days at a time. Men were beaten and killed for their hunger, fear, sickness and exhaustion. They had to endure the stress of selection where they were briefly examined and were selected to be killed because their weakness was a drain on the camp. Elie's father grew very sick and became very weak. One day while he was calling for Elie to help and comfort him guards at their camp beat him. When Elie woke up the next morning his father was gone from his bed, inevitably taken to a crematory. A few weeks after he and many other Jews were set free.

Night is an amazingly thought provoking and touching story. The descriptions of the horrors that Elie faced grab you and make you understand completely what kind of pain he and everyone else faced. This book was written to show how exactly horrendous the Holocaust was. It also shows you how evil can destroy persons belief in something that they hold dear, no matter how precious the belief is to them. I think the book clarifies how much hatred there is in the world. I think that people look simply at what is right in front of their face and take it for its value, forgetting that somewhere else, the hatred is intolerable. I don't think that until many years after the Holocaust, did people start to realize what had happened. I don't understand how powerful nations with common sense in their brains could have let such attrocities take place, especially when one single, solitary man is the cause of all of it. We have all herd stories of the terrible acts that were committed during the Holocaust but I think it is hard to imagine how horrible it really was until you read a novel such as this one.

Do my essay on movies CHEAP !

I would have never thought that people would fight for their lives and their beliefs in such a way. To let themselves go through so much for so long because of their unlimited faith in God is unfathomable. To hear of their hardships and their undying strength gives me a feeling of hope and pride. People should not let their lives be judged by ignorant people. They should fight for as long and hard as they can for what they think is right. An example of this need to live, to keep going as if to see how much one can endure is in chapter six. Here Elie describes the forty-two mile march from Buna to Gleiwitz in the blinding snow. There were thousands of men running as fast as they could, with scarcely any meat left on their bodies or clothes on their backs. If they fell out of ranks or slowed the pace they were shot dead on the spot. "They had orders to fire on any who could not keep up. Their fingers on the triggers, they did not depriver themselves of this pleasure."

I think that this work is very important to the study of culture and society. You begin to understand that the holocaust was an extreme example of the damage that ignorance can lead to. I think that Mr. Wiesel has thoroughly covered and expressed how necessary it is to know about the horrors of the holocaust. He carefully writes the novel with the greatest of detail to stress exactly how terrible their situation was. With his descriptions you are able to picture everything vividly and nearly smell the burning flesh right along with him. Everyday we hear of hate crimes against people of color or varying sexuality. All of this hate is formed in ignorance. Fortunately, I don't believe that in these modern times, any of us will ever see anything as horrible as the holocaust, which is why I think it is important for everyone to read this novel. It helps keep the words and memory of the victims alive in our minds and it may reach someone who has hate in their heart, it may make them realize the extent of pain that hate can cause.

Have you ever thought about pledging a sorority or a fraternity at a college or university? True, pledging a sorority or a fraternity is part of the collegiate experience, but has many disadvantages often not spoke of. One seldom hears about the torture and humiliation the pledges endure during initiation, as well as the tragic incidents that occur. Do Americans believe these initiation pranks are innocent and harmless? Are they all in good fun? While the majority of hazing cases go unreported, there have been several incidents where pledges of sororities and fraternities have been severely injured or even killed. In recent years, hazing by American social groups has caused disastrous and often fatal outcomes.

Richard Swanson, a student at the University of Southern California, was one of the eleven pledges of the Kappa Sigma House instructed to consume quarter-pound slabs of raw liver. Each pledge was ordered to swallow whole, the thick and oily slab of raw liver. Determined to become a member of the fraternity, Swanson tried repeatedly to swallow the oil-soaked meat. As he gagged, the thick meat became lodged in his throat and choked him to death (Cialdini).

Pledge Michael Flynn, at Manhattan College in New York, was abandoned naked on an isolated country road in Putnam Country, New York, on one of the coldest nights of the winter. Although the wind chill factor outside the car was degrees below zero, that didn't stop the fraternity brothers from pouring cold beer on his feet. Flynn cried out that his feet were freezing, but they ignored him and continued to pour the cold beer on his feet. Flynn's feet were severely frostbitten. He was hospitalized for two weeks and suffered permanent health problems (Nuwer).

Although hazing has been prevalent throughout the years, it is misunderstood. One may read these appalling stories and contemplate as to why individuals allow themselves to be subjected to such treatment. One may also read these stories and question why hazing occurs in the first place. "However, the answer is not a simple one. There are many factors that cause this behavior to continue, without the objection of either the members of the group or the pledges themselves. Pledges may feel the need to belong to the in-group, thus subjecting themselves to hazing. One theory suggests that hazing occurs to facilitate strong commitment and loyalty to the group. In addition, these social groups view hazing as a necessary component of their initiation rites" (Sweet).

Write my Essay on Hazing in American sorrorities and Fraternities for me

At Monmouth College in New Jersey, Zeta Beta Tau members ordered five pledges to dig 6-foot "graves" on a sandy beach on the Atlantic Ocean. The five pledges lay down in the graves they dug while the members threw handfuls of sand on top of them. The grave of William E. Flowers Jr. Collapsed, and he began inhaling sand. He died of asphyxiation. A grand jury called the death "accidental," absolving seven Zeta Beta Tau members who had been arrested on charges of manslaughter (Nuwer).

Hazing is NOT innocent and harmless; it is an act of violence by way of irresponsibility and should be ceased. Before pledging a sorority or a fraternity, ask this question; is it worth it? Hazing is an interesting phenomenon that requires more research in order to fully understand its complexities. Although hazing is illegal, hazing is still a wide-spread problem at many American universities today.

Upon graduation from High school, I began attending Mount Saint Marys College in Maryland at age 17 on an academic scholarship. Being away from home for the first time was exhilarating, but my new-found freedom was short-lived. When my first grades arrived, I had fallen short of the grade point average to maintain my scholarship and went on academic probation.

Over the winter recess I re-evaluated the path that I had chosen and began my second semester with a new enthusiasm, only to get mononucleosis shortly thereafter. When I was advised to take an academic leave and begin the following semester healthy, I tried instead to finish the semester to make amends for my previous grades. Instead, I could not recover from my illness, fell hopelessly behind and had to leave school.

This experience was devastating for me. I realized that I had had a complete disregard for my academic responsibilities and exercised poor judgment in life choices. Upon reflection, I am overwhelmed with sadness and remorse with regard to my behavior. However, the experience was not a waste, because I learned a lot about myself and take total responsibility for what occurred. It is a valuable though expensive lesson I will carry through the rest of my life. I now realize that I have to work hard on a daily basis to benefit the most from my education.

One (Chapters 1-)

Every March during the earliest years after the founding of Macondo, a small, isolated village, gypsies arrive with marvelous new inventions magnets, telescopes, and magnifying glasses. The much-respected village founder, Jose Arcadia Buendia, seizes on these inventions as ways to make money and scientific progress. Over the pleadings of his level-headed wife, Ursula Iguaran, he throws himself into countless schemes and plots involving the new inventions. When he becomes friends with Melquiades, the gypsy leader, Jose Arcadia Buendia is inspired to dedicate himself to knowledge and scientific study. He flirts with alchemy and astronomy and becomes increasingly withdrawn from his family and community. His great discovery, that the world is round, causes the whole village to become concerned about his sanity.

Jose Arcadia Buendia was the founder of Macondo and remains its most important citizen‹he oversaw the villages creation and decided how life would be lived there. It was a dreamy, magical place where no one was over the age of thirty and no one died. Therefore Jose Arcadio Buendias obsession with progress affects the whole village. He decides that Macondo must establish contact with the outside world and leads an expedition to find a path to the sea. The men of the village chop through marshes and swamps and discover, among other things, a rusted fifteenth-century suit of armor and a ruined Spanish galleon. But they do not discover the sea, and Jose Arcadio Buendia leads them back home and announces that Macondo is surrounded by water on all sides. Then he decides to move the village to a less isolated place, but Ursula plants opposition among the women of the village and he is forced to abandon that plan.

So he takes an interest in his two sons Jose Arcadio, the eldest, who has his fathers strength but lacks imagination, and the mysterious Aureliano, whose adult name is Colonel Aureliano Buendia. Their father educates them and takes them to the gypsies fair in March, where the three of them see ice for the first time.

The second chapter opens by telling the story of Macondos founding. Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula were cousins in a prosperous village. When they got married, Ursula was fearful that their children would be horribly deformed, as the children of incestuous unions sometimes are. She was particularly afraid because her aunt, married to Jose Arcadio Buendias uncle, had given birth to a miserable son with a pigs tail. So she wore a chastity belt and refused to consummate her marriage while people in the village laughed at Jose Arcadio Buendia. One of these villagers, Prudencio Aguilar, insulted Jose Arcadio Buendia after losing a cock fight. Buendia challenged him to a duel and killed him. Then he went home and told Ursula to remove her chastity belt. After several happy months, Ursula began to see the ghost of Prudencio Aguilar, and soon it became clear that his ghost was haunting them. Overcome with guilt and determined to put Prudencios ghost to rest, Jose Arcadio Buendia decided to leave the village. A small band of hardy souls elected to go with him, and after fourteen months of wandering, they founded Macondo.

Upon seeing the gypsies ice, Jose Arcadio Buendia is inspired to discover the meaning of mirrors, and he delves into study once more, this time with the help of his younger son Aureliano. Meanwhile his oldest son, Jose Arcadio, has turned into an exceptionally well-endowed young man. Pilar Ternera, a local woman astounded by his size, seduces him. They become lovers and, to his horror, she becomes pregnant. But before the child comes, the gypsies return. Jose Arcadio goes to the fair and seduces a young gypsy girl, then runs off with her. Distraught, Ursula tries to follow and winds up abandoning her newborn daughter, Amaranta. It is up to Jose Arcadio Buendia and Aureliano to look after Amaranta and the house until she returns‹which she does, five months later. She has not found her son or the gypsies, but she has discovered the two-day route through the swamp that leads to the outside world.

Analysis

There are many different ways to read One Hundred Years of Solitude and Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote the novel with an eye to multiple interpretations. In this first section, it is important to recognize one of those interpretations‹the Biblical interpretation‹and to make careful note of the narrative strategy Marquez employs towards this end.

Critics have pointed out that Solitude mimics the first books of the Bible, with a particular emphasis on the Book of Genesis. Note that in the first breath of the first chapter, the narrator remarks that the world was so recent that many things lacked names, an obvious reference to the In the Beginning opening of Genesis, wherein the Lord creates first the world, and then the objects that fill it. Similarily, Macondo is described as an Eden-like village where no one grows old and no one dies. The founders of this village, Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula Iguaran are obviously meant to stand in for Adam and Eve. The parallels between the founding couple and Adam and Eve are drawn more sharply in the second chapter when the narrator goes back in time. Like Adam and Eve, Jose Arcadio Buendia and Ursula Iguaran are driven from their homes, to wander in the cruel landscape because of a crime they have committed‹in their case, it was the murder of Prudencio Aguilar. Indeed, the similarities between Genesis and the first chapters of Solitude are so great that they have driven at least one critic, Harold Bloom, to bestow a second title on the novel the Book of Macondo. Also note that Jose Arcadio Buendia has an obsession with knowledge and progress, the very same desires that caused Adam and Eve to be expelled from Eden. As we will see, they bring about the destruction of Jose Arcadio Buendia as well.

Finally, to finish out the Biblical interpretation of the first chapters of the book, a note on the title. Many critics have pulled their hair out attempting to make the one hundred years of the title conform to the events in the book, but critic Regina James has accurately noted that no matter what types of dating are used, the book does not fit neatly into one hundred years. Part of the reason for this, Marquezs purposeful use of hyperbole regarding dates and times, will be discussed later. But one of the most outstanding reasons is that Marquez intends for the one hundred years of the title to stand as a cycle, a numerical symbol in the tradition of the Bible. Just as the Bible uses specific numbers to stand in for concepts and periods of time (the numbers and 7 represent perfection, for example, and many of the numerical figures are not meant to suggest actual, but symboli

Paper #-Art's Impact on My Life

One area of art that has an impact on my life is music. Music is a part of everything in my life. Since I was a little girl, I use music to relax, as a mood changer, and for just about everything else in my life. I think that every person should have music in their life because it is so powerful.

When I was a little girl, I loved music. All of our home videos have me dancing and singing to music. Somehow it has always been able to put me in a good mood. I used to play music and perform for my family like I was a super-star. I never really had any talent in the singing department, so it was never really taken serious; however it was always so much fun. My mom used to always play music when I was going to sleep too. From the time I was a baby, she would play some type of either classical music, trying to make my brain cells work harder, or some type of nursery rhyme that would just put me to sleep.

I can remember in Jr. High School, I was in band for the two years it was available. I played the clarinet and loved it. I loved music and I loved the fact that I could make it. It had always been made fun of that only "nerds" played in the band, but I did not care because I wanted to do this. I seriously doubt that if someone handed me a clarinet today and asked me to play, I would not even know where to begin, but at that time in my life, it was what I needed to be doing.

Music has probably had the most impact on my life during the current times of my life. I incorporate music into everything in my life today. I have a play-list on my computer of music I listen to in the morning when I am getting ready. This music is quite upbeat and fun and it gets me going. I also have music that I listen to when I am studying that is more of the softer tone that helps me to concentrate. Then there is the music I listen to when I am angry or upset at something. This music consists of hard core rock and such to let me get all my anger out in a safe way. When I am going to bed at night, I have a set of songs that are softer and soothing that help me to go to sleep.

For every situation that has occurred in my life, I have found a song that relates to it. If I am in a relationship, and I am extremely happy, there is a song for it. Or if I just broke up with my boyfriend, I can find a song that fits that. Every person that is a singer goes through the same stuff that every other person goes through in their life, and then they write a song about it. Once in a while, you may hear a song that changes your ways for some reason or another. Music is so powerful, some people don't realize the effect it can have on their life.

I personally don't see how a person can live a life with no musical influence. My roommate and I love to just download songs that we like and make a CD to listen to anywhere, anytime. People make fun of us because we will put the most random songs together on a CD. We go from having a sweet country song, to a wild rock song, to a fun pop song, and so on. My mom thinks it's crazy that I can put so much different music together onto one CD. I think it's better to have a little variety as opposed to limiting yourself to one type of music.

In conclusion, music is a form of art that has and still does make a huge impact on my life. From putting me to sleep as a baby, to making shows as a little girl, to helping me deal with my emotions as an adult, and so on. I use music everyday in everything I do. Christina Aguilera, Hoobastank, Garth Brooks, Marilyn Monroe, you name it, I listen to it. I can't image my life without music. Music has had more of an impact on my life than probably any other form of art.

In A Clean, Well Lighted Place, Hemingway communicates, loneliness/depression, which is displayed by the old man who tries to pass the night outside of the bar in a well lighted place after trying to commit suicide the week prior.

Hemingway presents to us a young intolerant waiter that has no compassion for what the old man is going thru and a older waiter that understands for he is just as lonely.

Hemingway makes the comparison between the two waiters when the older waiter tells the younger You have youth, confidence, and a job You have everything

When the younger replies back to the older with What do you lack The older man says Everything but work

His job was all that he had. He was just a lonely man passing the night in a well-lighted place...just on the other side of the bar at least until the bar closed.

The story ends with the older waiter explaining his desire to stay up all night and sleep when day arrives and point the problem to insomnia.

Is it really insomnia? What is the real culprit here?

Mentally or morally

Change could be a good thing. If not, life becomes too ordinary. But then again, change isn't suitable for the ones not willing to take a risk.

This story takes place in India, during the times of the English conquest and settlement. This was a time of great change for the Indians. One of the changes was that the English diploma was more valuable than the Indian one, so Indians now had to attend an English school in order to obtain a successful future. The main characters in this story are Santha, who narrates the story from her flashback point of view, and her older sister, Premila.

The school they're attending is completely English-attended, save a couple of Indian girls. These girls, being in their country are feeling like strangers in the classroom, exiled to the back of the classroom with only Indians to associate with. Well, the first change that the two sisters experience is a name change. Their "difficult-to-pronounce" Indian name is translated into an easier English name. No harm done there, the girls really don't mind.

But at lunchtime when the girls are eating their Indian food and the English kids are having sandwiches, another change is ignited within Premila. Upon her arrival to her house, she tells her mother that sandwiches would, in fact, be easier to handle at school. So the first voluntary change is visible in Premila. Santha has also changed her way of playing tag. These are small changes and seemingly insignificant, but they slowly point to the fact the girls are accepting the culture of the others and slowly replacing their previous one. This all comes to a halt when Premila decides to leave school.

Premila was offended by her teacher when she placed the English kids' seating normally, but the Indians had to sit with a chair in separation of each student because, as the teacher believes, Indians cheat. This brought the idea of the English's prejudice into Premila's mind. So she gave up all of their influence, including the school.

Premila was willing to make a change. She saw no harm in it. But apparently the others wouldn't accept her change. So Premila did take a risk, but I think she will remain with the idea that change is no good, especially for her, tattooed on her mind.

"Man versus Beast"

Grant Wiesner Grade 8 E.L.A. Mr. Wiesner April , 00

"The tribe has spoken. The rat is the winner of "Survivor Man versus Beast'." This sentence is similar to one spoken on the popular television series,Survivor, where people compete against each other to be the final survivor at a tropical locale. What would happen if humans competed against animals? One might think that human intelligence would be victorious against animal instinct. This supposition is incorrect. An animal, no matter what type or size would defeat a human competitor in any life or death struggle if they were allowed to be on equal ground ,without the human comforts of technology. In the story Side Bet, one can prove that the rat was the real survivor against the man, by looking at its cunningness, its physical condition ,and how it won the game against the man.

Custom Essays on Side Bet

One way to prove that an animal would survive if competing against humans is to look at its cunningness and cleverness. Animals have been given an instinct for survival and the mental ability to help them accomplish whatever it takes to survive. For example, ducks and geese know when it is time to leave Canada before winter comes and they know exactly where to fly to reach warmer, southern climates. Dogs know exactly where they buried a bone and can retrieve it when they are hungry. The rat in Side Bet was able to survive because it "was a wise and resourceful ship rat , and had all the cunningness and ferocity of its race" (Jenkins, page 8). The rat's instinct gave it the cunningness to survive against the man. In fact, "it knew exactly what the island offered of sustenance'" (Jenkins, page 8). So, while the man had to ration his small store of food and water, the rat was able to use its knowledge of the land to provide for itself.

Not only are animals more cunning then humans because of their instinct, many animals have much greater mental ability than humans give them credit for. Dogs are able to learn trick, as are other animals. This ability to learn and remember proves that animals have a well developed mental capability. Many animals that are introduced into new situations are able to figure out how to find food and shelter in order to survive. The Chinese baboon lives in an environment where its source of food has spikes on it, and has developed a way of sucking out the inside of the fruit using bamboo as a sort of straw. In Side Bet, the man tries to prevent the rat from eating his biscuits, so he constructs an elaborate contraption that has the food suspended by a string in mid-air. Despite the man's best efforts the rat was able to figure out how to get "the bag ... on the ground" (Jenkins, page 1). The rat was able to outsmart the man, as all animals would do it they were to compete against humans. As one can see, animals are better survivors than humans, because of their superior cunningness.

An animal would be a more successful survivor than a human being, not only through cunningness, but also because of its physical condition. However, in general, have become used to a sedentary lifestyle, and are showing the results of this by becoming more and more overweight. Domestic animals, like cats and dogs are unfortunately, also trapped in this cycle, with some even being forced to go on diets. On the other hand, wild animals, who have to rely on their own abilities to survive , are lean, mean, fighting machines. In Side Bet, a man and a rat are trapped on an island. The man's body has shriveled because of hunger and his energy has been sapped. The rat, on the contrary, had a "smooth body ... unshrunken muscles... sleek fur" (Jenkins, page ), and was able to stay that way from years of fending for itself.

Animals are better able to survive physically than humans because of their physical size and strength. Smaller animals are able to live on less food and water that the bigger bodies of humans. In Side Bet, the man discovered that the rat was able to live on less food and water than he, which enabled it to be fully active, while he was slowly dying. The man found out that the rat drank the dew which formed on the rocks, which "could save a rat, but no human could live that way" (Jenkins, page 1). The rat's size gave it a much better chance of survival than the man had.

Finally, one will see how animals are the ultimate survivors by discovering how when in direct competition with humans, animals win repeatedly. In a footrace, it has been scientifically proven that animals, such as bear, horses, cheetahs, and even ostriches are faster than humans. When it comes to strength and work capability, animals, such as elephants and even dogs, out lift and outwork humans. Proof of how animals are the winners in this competition comes from how power is measure, not in man power but in horsepower. In the story, Side Bet, the man and the rat were playing the game of life and death, where the winner would be the animal to outlive the loser. After a few days on the island, the man knew "that it was the rat which would win the game and the stakes---and the side bet" (Jenkins, page ).

In fact, in a competition of animals versus humans, the only way humans can win is by cheating. Many hunters display the stuffed bodies of their victims throughout their homes, yet all of them would have been murdered by the use of firearms. Never would a human attempt a fair hand-to-hand fight with an animal, because the final result would almost always be on the superior game playing ability of the animal. In Side Bet, the only way the man was able to defeat the rat was by cheating and leaving the island. The man realized this, as well, and attempted to placate his quilt by having his rescuers heave "a great heap of more than fifty kilograms of ships biscuits" (Jenkins, page 5) for the rat to eat. The man said he did this because the rat "won the game from me and I.... don't want to welsh on a bet" (Jenkins, page 5). Life is a game, and animals are the best players when in competition with humans.

As one can see, by using the short story, Side Bet, animals are better survivors than humans. Animals are more cunning than humans as the rat proved by using its instinct to survive and by being able to outwit the man to get food. Animals are better fitted for survival as seen when comparing the rat to man and how its smaller size made survival easier than compared to the larger man. Finally, when in a fair competition, the only way a human can win is by cheating, as the man did by leaving the island, and not ever finishing the competition against the rat. The rat in

Side Bet, proved that animals are the ultimate survivors.

In a wealthy city such as Sydney, wealth is usually very unequally shared. In Australia the top 50% owns 0% of total wealth and the other half of the 50% own 10% of total wealth of Australia. This shows that poverty is a great issue of Australian cities. As people living in poverty increases in Australia, the people working poor have also increased. Some of the most important reasons for the presence of working poor class must be seen to rise from the structure of the money/power flow in Australia and from the unemployment rate.

Research from the National Venture for Social and Economics Modeling show that woman at the top increased their salaries by % where woman at the bottom decreased their salaries by %. (Michelle Gumn June 1 New Class divided that's all in the Family) This shows the structure of the money flow in Australia where the wealthy gains more chance of becoming wealthier and the poor gains more chance of becoming poorer.

The wealthy people own property where benefits/interests from the property/bank increases which make up the extra savings. On the other hand, the poor people would borrow money for a mortgage and pay the interest from bank or pay the house renting fee from monthly income leaving no available savings. Having no savings results the poor people to need for extra money which results in people working poor.

Another factor that makes the class of working poor present can be seen to have come from the power that people have from workforce or from birth. The people with a low salary are usually in a low position at work. This means that they will be the first to be targeted to leave if the company goes through a bad situation. When such a situation happens, the workers would have no extra savings and would be in a situation where they have to work with little income in order to pay for the immediate living/housing.

Write my Essay on Poverty in a wealthy city cheap

Also power and money affects most people from birth. It takes away the chances of opportunities for children from birth. Around1 in 8 of children in Australia live in Poverty, and this continues through generations.

Thus the working poor class is present in Australia's wealthy cities because of the way that the social structure is made. The structure implicates the poverty more and divides Australia into money, class and power that increase the class of working poor.

One of the other reasons for the class of working poor in wealthy cities of Australia can be seen to arise from the issue of unemployment. As most the large wealthy cities have a connection to global market place, the increase in globalization results in 0% of products on shelves being from foreign countries which helps in the unemployment rate.

Another reason for unemployment rate must be seen to rise from various groups of disadvantaged people such as new immigrants, the indigenous, the disabled, sole parent, and from the refugees. Again it is these unemployed people who make up most of the class of working poor, and it is these people who feel pressures from global change. The unemployed goes through poverty and gains poor health from stress, crowded housing and poor nutrition. Sometimes they become homeless.

Therefore, many large, wealthy cities such as Sydney have great unequally shared wealth among the people and have impact from globalization which results in unemployment rate. Thus great cities with wealth are more likely to have a class of working poor as globalization in such cities increases the unemployment rate and such cities carry a structure of the power of wealthy people that enables the wealthy to get wealthier and the poor to get poorer which makes the people of the poor class to work with poor income.

In reading Harrison Bergeron, written by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., I came to the conclusion than in Harrison's society I would be a normal person. I do not think I would need much, because I do not think I require a lot. I would definitely need something to keep me from thinking, because that is all I really ever do. I am always thinking about something, whether it is about homework, music, softball, or guard. I would also probably get into trouble all the time for taking out the earpiece, because I really can not stand loud noises in my ears all the time. I do not think I would be able to deal with that. I would need something for my eyesight, because I have twenty-twenty vision. The eyeglasses making everything all wavy and crazy like would not really bother me, because I get dizzy all the time from getting hit in the head and having a concussion, and it makes everything all crazy and retro looking. My strength, which is really brought out in softball and guard, would need something. I think in the story they said they used bags around the neck filled with lead balls, the amount of balls in the bag were dependent on how strong they are. My bags could vary in weight, but between softball and guard I would hate to find out how heavy they would be. The bags would probably be dragging the ground. My sleeping habits would be a problem, because I am a very heavy sleeper. Every chance I get; I sleep. I guess they do some kind of shocking thing, but I doubt it if it would wake me up. I really do not know what they would do about my huge heart, because I would do anything for anyone. There are a few exceptions; like eating slugs or something gross like that. I cannot think of anything they could do to stop my big heart. I believe that there is no way they could ever find a handicap for everyone's uniqueness. It would take the rest of the earth's life for the handicappers to find everyone's uniqueness. It is just not possible, for anyone.

Around 100 or 10 B.C. (sources unsure) a new leader was born from a family not that high in social status. At that time his family didn't know what their new son would achieve. Most of Rome didn't even know his name but in the upcoming years Julius Caesar would be a name muttered through bitter rivals and hailed through supportive followers. His life was filled with victories, losses, government positions and conspiracies that ultimately lead to death.

Gaius Julius Caesar was born on July 1, 100 or 10 BC. He was from patrician descent and Caesars family had not achieved real depth in the government. His father, also named Gaius Julius Caesar, was the brother-in-law of Gaius Marius and married Aurelia, who was connected with the well-known Aurelii family. He died about 85 BC but reached the consulship before he died. In 84, Caesar married Cornelia, daughter of Mariuss old partner Lucius Cornelius Cinna. When Lucius Cornelius Sulla ordered him to divorce her, he refused and escaped harm through the intervention of such people as his mothers relative, Gaius Aurelius Cotta.

Caesar was then sent to collect a fleet from the Roman ally Nicomedes IV of Bithynia and was honored for conspicuous bravery at the siege of Mytilene. Returning home after Sullas death, he was never able to actually prosecute two Sullans, Gnaeus Cornelius Dolabella and Gaius Antonius Hibrida. He left Rome again for studies in Rhodes but was captured by pirates. He had borrowed money and paid his ransom then he recruited private troops, captured the pirates, and had them executed. As he continued, his studies on Rhodes were interrupted by a renewed break of war with Mithradates VI of Pontus. To fight Mithradates, Caesar had obtained a small army to battle him. Caesar had obtained the armies with no political status at all.

During a legateship to help Marcus Antonius Creticus fight piracy, Caesar was made a pontiff at Rome in 7 BC. After his military tribunate and possible service against Spartacus, he sided with those seeking power from outside the circle of no bles who dominated the Senate. He supported restoration of tribunician powers and the recall from exile of those who had supported Marcus Aemilius Lepidus in his revolt of 77. Caesar also advertised his Marian connections by displaying Mariuss effigies at his aunt Julias funeral; through funeral speeches for both Julia and his wife; and by the restoration of Marius battle trophies on the Capitoline Hill. re write this if you go to a school in minnesota

After a quaestorship in Spain, Caesar earned popularity among the Transpadane Gauls by supporting their agitation for Roman citizenship. He next married Pompeia, granddaughter of Sulla and relative of Pompey the Great, and evidence indicates that he supported important military assignments for Pompey in 67 and 66. As aedile in 65 BC, he achieved great popularity--and went into debt--by financing splendid games. He also probably cooperated with Marcus Licinius Crassus in an attempt to annex Egypt, in supporting Catiline for the consulship, and in promoting the land-distribution bill of Publius Servilius Rullus.

In 64 BC, Caesar presided over trials of those who had committed murder during Sullas proscriptions. The following year, he prosecuted Gaius Rabirius, and used that trial to attack the legality of the Senates consultum ultimum, the Senates decree of a state of emergency. In the elections of that year, massive bribery helped him become Pontifex Maximus. Caesar took no part in Catilines conspiracy, but he courted popularity by opposing the execution of Catilines accomplices and, as praetor in 6, by supporting measures favorable to Pompey. Soon after, however, he divorced Pompeia on suspicion of infidelity with Publius Clodius, although he refused to testify against the latter in the Bona Dea affair. Caesar later married Calpurnia.

Caesar became governor of Further Spain in 61 after Crassus had helped pacify his creditors. Military action in Spain restored Caesars finances, and he outwitted his political enemies by forgoing a triumph (the traditional victors procession in Rome) in order to win election to the consulate with the support of Crassus and Pompey. Faced with increased opposition from conservatives like Cato the Younger, Caesar, Crassus, and Pompey formed the First Triumvirate to further their ambitions After obtaining a reduction of the Asian tax contracts for Crassus, ratification of Pompeys postwar arrangements in the East, and land for Pompeys veterans, Caesar received the governorships of Illyricum, Cisalpine Gaul, and Transalpine Gaul. He was also given control of a large army, which he used to subjugate Gaul. He gained enormous political strength from the Gallic Wars, which lasted from 58 to 51 BC. Although Caesars daughter, Julia, married Pompey in 5, strain, encouraged by Crassus, developed between the two men. The Triumvirate was renegotiated at Luca in 56, but the death of Julia in 54 and Crassus in 5 and the phenomenal success of Caesar in Gaul eventually destroyed Caesars relationship with Pompey.

Dynamic, witty, urbane, and highly intelligent, Caesar aroused loyalty and admiration among both contemporaries and later generations. Nevertheless, hire write this if you go to a school in minnesota s immense ambition and the contempt he displayed for the republican traditions of his opponents drove them to desperate measures against him. He therefore left Romes great problems for his adopted son and heir, the future Augustus. Caesar made his way to praetorship by 6 BC and many of the senate felt him a dangerous, ambitious man. Because of this, they deprived him of a triumph after his praetorian command in Spain (61-60 BC) and they also did their best to keep him out of consulship. He finally became consul in 5 BC. Much of the thanks for this achievement should be given to Gnaeus Pompeius (Pompey the Great) who had just come back from a campaign which had doubled the income of the Roman treasury and gained three new provinces to the empire. Because of this he had popular support and his voice carried great weight with the public at large. Because of Pompey, however, to become a leading person in Roman politics you had to have more then just an ordinary triumph. It was because of this that Caesar, during his consulship, pushed through a special law giving him a five-year command in Cispine Gaul and Illyricum, both provinces in the empire covering North Italy and the Adriatic coast of Yugoslavia. Caesar saw this as a great opportunity to extend the empire either into Gaul or in the Balkins.

While in Gaul, the most important section of the Roman Army, positioned at the German border, was under his control. He was a brilliant military leader and lead many campaigns The Helvetica Campaign, The Belgic Campaign, The Venetic Campaign, The German Campaign, The British Campaign. Because the whole point of these campaigns was to get high public and political acclaim, he wrote about all the campaigns and sent the books to Rome so people knew and remembered his name. Caesar had all the acclaim he could hope for and the triumph to back it up, however, to get the position he felt his achievements deserved, he had to take his troops across the River Rubicon and in doing so declare civil war on the state and Pompey. Just days before the senate demanded that Caesar resign from consul Caesar had postioned legions in Cisalpine and Transalpine Gaul for reserve in case marching a legion through the Rubicon was futile. Caesar had started the civil war with only one legion by defying the senate and marching across the Rubicon. The senate had decided to grant Pompey control of the forces to try and defeat Caesar. As Pompey gathered forces Caesar had had taken city after city in northern Italy.

Pompey and the other senators decided to flee Rome. They thought better to try and fight Caesar in an area with more allies. In the scram of running they forgot to take the treasury that contained a lot of money. Before they left they said that anyone who stayed were considered Caesar's allies and his enemies.

At Dyrrhachium he suffered a loss, but his hardened veterans totally defeated Pompeys superior numbers at Pharsalus on Aug. , 48. Pompey fled to Egypt, where he was murdered.

Following him there, Caesar became involved in the civil war between Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII. He made Cleopatra his mistress as well as queen of Egypt. In 47 BC Caesar went to Anatolia, where he defeated Pompeys ally Pharnre write this if you go to a school in minnesota aces, king of Bosporus, at Zela; this victory occasioned Caesars famous boast Veni, vidi, vici (I came, I saw, I conquered). He returned to Rome, but in December 47 he crossed to North Africa to meet a new threat from the Pompeian forces. After victory at Thapsus, he returned home to an unprecedented quadruple triumph in 46 BC. Pompeys sons, however, organized new resistance in Spain. Caesars victory over them at Munda, on Mar. 17, 45, was the hardest of all. Caesar was now showered with political powers and honors. He was appointed dictator, then dictator for 10 years, and finally dictator for life. He was also elected consul, appointed prefect of morals, awarded tribunician sacrosanct, and honored by portrayal on coins and by the erection of a temple to his clemency.

Caesar introduced numerous reforms, such as limiting the distribution of free grain, founding citizen colonies, introducing the Julian calendar, and enlarging the Senate. At the same time he reduced debts, revised the tax structure, and extended Roman citizenship to non-Italians. While meeting genuine needs, these popular reforms also strengthened Caesars control of the state at the expense of his opponents, whom he tried to placate with ostentatious clemency. In 44 BC, Caesar, likening himself to Alexander the Great, began to plan the conquest of Parthian. A lot of people that had liked him before thought he might become an absolute king even people he had pardoned conspired together to murder him. The conspirators, led by Marcus Junius Brutus and Gaius Cassius Longinus, stabbed him at a meeting of the Senate in Pompeys theater on Mar. 15 (the Ides of March), 44 BC. Falling at the foot of Pompeys statue, Caesar addressed Brutus in Greek, "Even you, lad?" Caesar was an accomplished orator and writer. His two surviving works, On the Gallic War and On the Civil War, introduced the genre of personal war commentaries. Acting as a quiet and sneaky kind of propaganda for Caesar, they are also lucid narratives that hold the reader.

What the attackers didn't know is that Caesar's whole plan was to only make the government better in Rome. But by doing so he had to conquer many lands to make him rich and powerful in the publics' eye. By doing that it made him look power hungry, barbaric to some and an unfit ruler. Julius Caesar gave many things to civilization the Julian calendar, Making new ways to power and governments, and a reformed Rome.

In fact if it wasn't for Caesar's substitution of the oligarchy and autocracy Rome and the Greco-Roman world could of possibly destroyed or dismantled before write this if you go to a school in minnesota re the beginning of the Christian era. Caesar was a very good speaker and an orator. He was second to only one person that was Cicero in oratorship. His most famous writings are used in modern day Latin Classes around the world.

In every great literary work, there is a symbolic element, and irony, making the author's message more tangible and realistic. As we compare the novels, Sophie's World, Moby Dick, and East of Eden, we start to see two respective themes in common that the author expresses. One of which, is freewill, the power of choice and the other good vs. evil. As the drama increases, we start to see that both themes become interdependent of one another. In the three novels, these are in fact the two major themes that lead to the climatic scenes.

In the novel, Sophie's World, Gaarder (the author) incorporates literature, history and philosophy together. Sophie Amundson, who is the protagonist of the book, becomes enlightened with philosophical schooling through the mail by a man name, Alberto Knag. Although when reading this book, you then start to realize that Sophie Amundson wasn't an ordinary character. In fact she wasn't real. Albert Knox, a real character in the book, made Sophie up to enlighten his daughter, Hilde with the questions of life. Even though his intentions were genuinely good, he represents the evil of the book in Sophie's World, whereas Sophie represents the good. Albert Knag is writing Sophie's life. He basically controls her mentality, and her physical well-being, yet he isn't god. In reality the only freedom that Sophie has is what Alberto allows. Yet, despite the fact that Sophie is a figment of Alberto's imagination, she's still able to break free from her fate and exercise some of her own thoughts as well.

In the novel Moby Dick, the narrator, Ishmael tells the story of his adventures whaling with a rather odd and diverse crew. The good and the evil vary in this book because there are so many comparisons. One that caught my eye was when Queequeg exhibited some sort of disease that was fatal. The disease represents death, and death representing the evil that Queequeg was experiencing. Obviously the good in this represents life, to live. Although death was inevitable due to lack of modern medicine, Queequeg decided to live, and he recovered. By that we can see that Queequeg bestowed his own freewill, even when fate was decided. There again we see a character turning his own predestined fate around to his liking.

As we get to East of Eden we see the same thing happening as to all the other characters. In this book, Stienback composes many characters that all meet up with each other. One of the relations in which demonstrates good and evil and free-will is between Adam's atrocious wife, Cathy Trask and their son Caleb Trask. Cathy was a careless and moral less character, and Caleb wasn't an admirable character either. Though in the story both characters show signs of similarity, but in this relation Cathy is represented as the evil and Caleb is represented as the Good. This is because as we near the end of the book Caleb wanted to see his mother, Cathy to see if she really was as bad as people says. Then when Caleb saw her he knew it was true. She then told him that he was part of her, in other words, he's just like her and he will never amount to anything more. Caleb on the other hand decides that he will not be like her. He will live out his life his way. He therefore chooses well over evil.

In these three novels, the two themes are interdependent of one another. In Sophie's World, Sophie is able to escape her fate of being a mindless character in Albert's imagination. Queequeg in Moby Dick is able to escape death because he had the will power to do so and Caleb in East of Eden was able to make his own choices about what he wanted to be in life. For these characters it was a battle between good and evil, and the battle of unwanted fate. It was freewill that aided them to triumph over evil.
