"Man versus Beast"

Grant Wiesner Grade 8 E.L.A. Mr. Wiesner April , 00

"The tribe has spoken. The rat is the winner of "Survivor Man versus Beast'." This sentence is similar to one spoken on the popular television series,Survivor, where people compete against each other to be the final survivor at a tropical locale. What would happen if humans competed against animals? One might think that human intelligence would be victorious against animal instinct. This supposition is incorrect. An animal, no matter what type or size would defeat a human competitor in any life or death struggle if they were allowed to be on equal ground ,without the human comforts of technology. In the story Side Bet, one can prove that the rat was the real survivor against the man, by looking at its cunningness, its physical condition ,and how it won the game against the man.

One way to prove that an animal would survive if competing against humans is to look at its cunningness and cleverness. Animals have been given an instinct for survival and the mental ability to help them accomplish whatever it takes to survive. For example, ducks and geese know when it is time to leave Canada before winter comes and they know exactly where to fly to reach warmer, southern climates. Dogs know exactly where they buried a bone and can retrieve it when they are hungry. The rat in Side Bet was able to survive because it "was a wise and resourceful ship rat , and had all the cunningness and ferocity of its race" (Jenkins, page 8). The rat's instinct gave it the cunningness to survive against the man. In fact, "it knew exactly what the island offered of sustenance'" (Jenkins, page 8). So, while the man had to ration his small store of food and water, the rat was able to use its knowledge of the land to provide for itself.

Not only are animals more cunning then humans because of their instinct, many animals have much greater mental ability than humans give them credit for. Dogs are able to learn trick, as are other animals. This ability to learn and remember proves that animals have a well developed mental capability. Many animals that are introduced into new situations are able to figure out how to find food and shelter in order to survive. The Chinese baboon lives in an environment where its source of food has spikes on it, and has developed a way of sucking out the inside of the fruit using bamboo as a sort of straw. In Side Bet, the man tries to prevent the rat from eating his biscuits, so he constructs an elaborate contraption that has the food suspended by a string in mid-air. Despite the man's best efforts the rat was able to figure out how to get "the bag ... on the ground" (Jenkins, page 1). The rat was able to outsmart the man, as all animals would do it they were to compete against humans. As one can see, animals are better survivors than humans, because of their superior cunningness.

An animal would be a more successful survivor than a human being, not only through cunningness, but also because of its physical condition. However, in general, have become used to a sedentary lifestyle, and are showing the results of this by becoming more and more overweight. Domestic animals, like cats and dogs are unfortunately, also trapped in this cycle, with some even being forced to go on diets. On the other hand, wild animals, who have to rely on their own abilities to survive , are lean, mean, fighting machines. In Side Bet, a man and a rat are trapped on an island. The man's body has shriveled because of hunger and his energy has been sapped. The rat, on the contrary, had a "smooth body ... unshrunken muscles... sleek fur" (Jenkins, page ), and was able to stay that way from years of fending for itself.

Animals are better able to survive physically than humans because of their physical size and strength. Smaller animals are able to live on less food and water that the bigger bodies of humans. In Side Bet, the man discovered that the rat was able to live on less food and water than he, which enabled it to be fully active, while he was slowly dying. The man found out that the rat drank the dew which formed on the rocks, which "could save a rat, but no human could live that way" (Jenkins, page 1). The rat's size gave it a much better chance of survival than the man had.

Finally, one will see how animals are the ultimate survivors by discovering how when in direct competition with humans, animals win repeatedly. In a footrace, it has been scientifically proven that animals, such as bear, horses, cheetahs, and even ostriches are faster than humans. When it comes to strength and work capability, animals, such as elephants and even dogs, out lift and outwork humans. Proof of how animals are the winners in this competition comes from how power is measure, not in man power but in horsepower. In the story, Side Bet, the man and the rat were playing the game of life and death, where the winner would be the animal to outlive the loser. After a few days on the island, the man knew "that it was the rat which would win the game and the stakes---and the side bet" (Jenkins, page ).

In fact, in a competition of animals versus humans, the only way humans can win is by cheating. Many hunters display the stuffed bodies of their victims throughout their homes, yet all of them would have been murdered by the use of firearms. Never would a human attempt a fair hand-to-hand fight with an animal, because the final result would almost always be on the superior game playing ability of the animal. In Side Bet, the only way the man was able to defeat the rat was by cheating and leaving the island. The man realized this, as well, and attempted to placate his quilt by having his rescuers heave "a great heap of more than fifty kilograms of ships biscuits" (Jenkins, page 5) for the rat to eat. The man said he did this because the rat "won the game from me and I.... don't want to welsh on a bet" (Jenkins, page 5). Life is a game, and animals are the best players when in competition with humans.

As one can see, by using the short story, Side Bet, animals are better survivors than humans. Animals are more cunning than humans as the rat proved by using its instinct to survive and by being able to outwit the man to get food. Animals are better fitted for survival as seen when comparing the rat to man and how its smaller size made survival easier than compared to the larger man. Finally, when in a fair competition, the only way a human can win is by cheating, as the man did by leaving the island, and not ever finishing the competition against the rat. The rat in

Side Bet, proved that animals are the ultimate survivors.
