Essay topic I realised that these strange, unthought of connections - sex + death, lust + violence, desire + degradation are there, deep in even a good hearts chambers In your view, of what significance is this realisation in Davids life?

Perfection and purity does not apply to any human being, the fact will remain as long as we are human. even if we are on the topic of family, and ones kin whom we may have the greatest respect for. They also may carry secrets & cruel intetions within their own good hearts chambers. The realisation of such truth by that of David is a great significance to his life. The events which brought about such realisation is clear, his uncle a respected doctor and his lusterous affairs which sank to a level of rape. The abuse of power, by his very own family, whom in human sense believed there social status left them at a point of invincibility.

These connections are mainly explored through the exploits of uncle Frank, he is a decent man whom has made a good carreer for himself as a doctor and yet still he is able to do such viel acts that are not only unprofessional of him but against morals. His main crime was that of rape, he had raped many Indian girls and even Davids own babysiter Marie. Her rape and her sickness ultimetly lead her to her death. Being a doctor also ment that Uncle Frank had a resbonsibility to look after his patients, yet that never happened as he had raped and molestered most of them. David eventually with the rest of the family finds out about all these events and this is probably one of the major steps in him realising that all people are not that good.

Yet even though that was the major crime commited in the novel, the others that followed because of this crime had maybe a larger affect on Davids view of life. This was of course what happened within the family, the arguments, the abuse of power and the decsions that were made

The Haydens let power get to their heads and David witnessed it all, even the advocates of the law could not hold it up. What was David to learn from seeing all this? His own family memebers whom he at one stage wouldve thought were like gods, at this level of injustice and crime. Yet this alongside the death of Marie was a big turning point in Davids life and his leap into adulthood. As he finally realised how the world was and not what it is to a kid.

This story and the situations that arise in it may not be excatly what happens in the real world but it is very much close to the heart of such issues. Who is good and who is bad? And how do we react when we find out something such as what David discovers. Our lives will never be the same as David discovers but maybe its all for the good. Maybe the truth can help us get on with our lives yet lies will always weave there way into our lives. none

Sometimes, a story will force the reader to reflect on one's beliefs relating to life occurrences. Such is the case with the two stories, "The Story of an Hour" and "Videotape."

In "The Story of an Hour" by Kate Chopin, Mrs. Mallard is told of her husband's death and retreats to her room to ponder what life will be like without her husband. She is saddened at first, yet she quickly realizes that she is finally free to live her own life. She becomes almost overjoyed at this thought and then learns that her husband is in fact still very much alive. With her existing heart condition and the shock of her husband's survival, she suffers form the "joy that kills," and dies.

In "Videotape" by Don DeLillo, a young girl unknowingly records on the family video camera the death of a man driving in his car behind her and her father. There is very little emotion expressed by the author when the man is shot, and there is also little emotion felt by the reader. The story focuses on the reality of the videotape, how it looks, how it is "realer than real." "Videotape" is mostly centered on the audience's reaction to the tape. In a world filled with violence, many people are no longer revolted by seeing others get hurt or even die. The "Videotape" horror is overshadowed by the surreal notion of an innocent child capturing death while learning to use a camera. One sees a friendly, kind man waving from his car to a child. The next moment he is murdered. The camera rolls on unrelentingly. It seems the girl can't stop her recording. The man playing it over and over again for his wife can't stop either. This willingness to watch a man die describes an attitude found in many American homes and the way we view the death of those we don't know. The story also states that there have been many others killed the same way, but no one seems to be interested in any of the other murders. They are only interested in this one because it plays out so vividly and innocently on film. Both the man and the little girl see death and it seemed so normal; so unemotional.

"The Story of an Hour" shows a passionate death. The reader understands that the wife who sees her husband unexpectedly alive dies of strong emotion. Yet to a causal viewer, her death involves no obvious emotion. The reader however knows that it is the rise and fall of her passionate reactions that cause her heart to stop beating. Mrs. Mallard's death was a traumatic death. In that brief hour she is filled with horror, exhaustion, sadness, jubilation, surprise and maybe remorse. Those strong emotions are shared with the reader and leave one to determine which emotion finally killed Mrs. Mallard.

The "Story of an Hour" also takes a different look at reactions of those around this tragic death. The story ends immediately after Mrs. Mallard dies. It does not give any indication to the emotion of Mr. Mallard, her sister Josephine and her husband's friend, Richard. But it did provoke a deep examination of mortality for the reader.

Readers are also left to determine their own emotions after reading "Videotape." There is little emotion seen by the story's central characters. The readers may be left horrified at the brutality or inhumanity of the senseless act or they might be as numbed to the death as the man who was watching it on TV.

How is it that a violent murder can leave us with less emotion than the death or an old, feeble woman? In both "The Story of an Hour" and "Videotape" one's emotions are provoked by the emotions of the characters. One feels the joy and despair of Mrs. Mallard, so one reacts more strongly to her death. One can also understand the detached emotion of watching someone die from the safe distance of a "Videotape," something shown repeatedly on TV. Yes, this was a real death, but it still looks like all the others.

Both stories force us to look at our own emotions and question our own reactions to death. Both authors paint pictures of the events leading up to those deaths. Both challenge us to examine our own mortality and our reactions to powerful life occurrences. In contrast, one story is full of emotion, and the other story holds one at arm's length. Uncomfortable reactions to their messages make both stories most powerful.

The Impact of facial emotion

Introduction

The aims of this research study are to determine whether an emotional facial expression is more rapidly located in an array of neutral faces, than the location of a neutral face amongst emotional faces. It endeavours to discover which kind of facial expression in particular is most readily located in an array of neutral faces, as well as determining the influence of the overall number of distractor faces present on the efficiency of target face location.

Cheap Custom Essays on The Impact of Facial Emotion

Human facial expressions across cultures appear not to vary, and the facial muscle movements that signify happiness in one area of the world seem to be the same on the other side of the globe, regardless of levels of isolation (Ekman & Friesen, 171). Darwin proposed that our facial expressions are an unlearned, innate response that has developed from similar expressions in other animals.

Recent studies of the human limbic system have revealed that particular individual emotions like fear and disgust, are processed by certain neural substrates (Calder, Lawrence & Young, 001). A small almond-shaped structure buried deep in our temporal lobe has a significant role in emotional processing and deficits to it have resulted in an impaired recognition of facial expression (Grossman, E., 000). It is intriguing that through MRI scans an increase in the amygdala's activity is evident when participants view fearful facial expressions, more so than expressions of happiness, disgust, anger or neutrality (Kassin,K., Heider & Simmel, 18). Conversely, patient-based studies show that when participants view facial expressions of disgust in particular, brain imaging identifies the insula and basal ganglia to be extremely active during processing (Uller, C. & Nichols, S.).

It has been suggested that emotional facial expressions do not have to be attended to for them to be perceived; it is an involuntary process (Hansen & Hansen,14., Stenberg, Wilking & Dahl, 18). In fact Pratto & John (11) argue that negative expressions attract attention more so than positive or neutral expressions due to an adaptive, automatic recognition of danger that is part of the human biology. One study indicated that angry faces amidst a happy crowd were found more rapidly than a happy face amongst angry distractors (Hansen & Hansen, 188).

Previous research has also concluded that as the number of distractor faces increase, little or no change is seen in the time it takes participants to locate the target face. This is only true when all the distracter faces have a constant expression.

If facial emotion can be perceived without conscious perception, as suggested by previous studies, then a target face with a unique emotion should summon attention to its location, and should therefore be relatively easy to find amongst neutral distractor faces.

Adding more distractor faces should not substantially increase the difficulty of searching for an emotional face amongst neutral faces, because emotional faces capture attention automatically.

Conversely it should be more difficult to find a neutral face amongst emotional distractors, because the distractor faces are more likely to capture attention than the neutral target.

Method

Participants All students who are undertaking Laboratory classes for Psychology 5110 at the University of Melbourne.

Stimuli Face stimuli were taken from Ekman & Friesen (171) set and presented on a computer display. Half the visual search displays had faces and the rest consisted of 6 faces arranged around a central point in a circle. 50% of the trials contained the target face and the specified target was absent in the other 50% of trials.

Neutral stimuli and four emotional stimuli were present in the search tasks happines, sadness, anger and fear.

Participants underwent 160 trials in each of the two experiments.

Procedure Before participants underwent the experimental trials, practice trials were given to provide feedback and familiarise them with the procedure. Each participant performed two experiments involving one emotion only. 5% of the group were allocated one of the four emotions; happiness, sadness, anger or fear. Experiment 1 involved searching for an emotional face amongst neutral distractors, while Experiment involved searching for a neutral face amongst emotional distractors. The particular order that each 5% of the group undertook Experiment 1 and Experiment was randomised.

When the target was present, participants responded using the left mouse button, or the right button when they perceived the target as absent. They were instructed to respond as rapidly and accurately as possible; feedback was provided after each response. The computer measured the speed and accuracy of each participant.

Results

Before the correct reaction times were analysed, participants who made 0% errors,

who had response times 00 ms or who had results standard deviations above the

condition mean were excluded.

The Figures that follow firstly show the mean search times for emotional and neutral

target faces, note that Display Set 1 involves faces while Display Set involves 6

faces. The Figures also graph the standard deviation for each response; both neutral

and emotional in each Display Set situation.

The results indicate that while searching for all four emotions studied, the reaction time for participants to locate an emotional target face is more rapid than the location of a neutral target. Reaction times were quickest for the group who were instructed to locate a happy face in the crowd of neutral faces; 8 milliseconds ( faces) and 1 milliseconds (6 faces). The slowest reaction times were recorded from participants searching for sad facial expressions; 168 milliseconds ( faces) and 1616 milliseconds (6 faces). Overall reaction times grew as the number of distractor faces increased in the case of each separate emotion.

Discussion

The results indicate participants found it easier to locate emotional faces amongst neutral faces, than a neutral face amongst emotional ones, supporting the hypothesis. It appears happy faces drew attention most rapidly out of all the emotions. These results are inconsistent with Hansen & Hansen's previous research (18). Unexpectedly, the size of each display seemed to influence the reaction time of participants; slowing down as the overall number of faces grew, which rejects the original hypothesis.

Although the results provide insight into the nature of human emotional processing, interpretation is difficult. There is no clear evidence available to confirm that the speed in which we automatically attend to and locate emotional faces is due to the actual emotion. It has been suggested that humans are drawn to faces expressing emotion because of distinct facial features or components (Byrne & Eysenck, 15; Nothdurft, 1; Purcell, Stewart & Skov, 16; White, 15).

A trend is present in the results supporting one hypothesis and indeed rejecting one, but only to a certain extent. The difference between reaction times cannot be considered significant. It must also be considered that the participants were a convenient sample of Melbourne University students, learning about psychological research methods and were well-informed on previous research and the predictions for this experiment. A self-fulfilling prophecy may have occurred and students possibly unconsciously slowed their reaction times when locating neutral targets. Each group of participants were instructed by 4 different experimenters (tutors). The conditions may not have been constant in each group therefore the results for each individual emotion may be affected.

It is important to note that in light of the results no clear conclusions or inferences can be made due to their statistical significance. Interestingly faces displaying happiness were attended to faster than those displaying sadness, anger and suprisingly fear. Changing the overall number of distracters did appear to change the speed of reaction time, which was not originally expected. However, the trend in the data gathered is also indicative that emotions are rapidly attended to; they play a functional role in guiding our focal attention, perhaps an important adaptive human element.

John Constable's The Haywain and Albert Bierstadt's Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California are two incredibly well painted landscapes. Constable and Bierstadt's amazing artistic talents are immediately evident in the their works. In addition to the aesthetic qualities that the paintings possess, the artists' feelings on their current sociopolitical situations are manifested in the paintings. Constable's The Haywain reflects his memories of a disappearing rural pastoralism. This is an important feeling he is exposing considering that Arian England, at the time, was under civil unrest, which resulted in violence and arson. Bierstadt's Among the Sierra Nevada Mountains, California represents his feelings for his approval of the expansion of the West. By putting this painting out, Bierstadt brought national attention to the West and its natural beauty, thus supporting the westward expansion.

It seems that both Constable and Bierstadt have a high regard for their respective countries and wish to preserve their natural beauty. The Haywain shows Arian England when Constable enjoyed it. The painting is said to have a "nostalgic air" to it. The way Constable painted the man in The Haywain is significant, such that the man is not an observer but he is a participant in the landscapes being. Bierstadt's painting is unique because it showed the viewer during his time what was yet to be colonized. The painting is really awe-inspiring and represents an environment of complete calmness.

Pual Cezanne painted the Mount Sainte-Victoire. The way he studies nature was very unique, which is evident in his painting, Mount Sainte-Victoire. When he looked at a scene, he did not see the grass, the trees, and the sky, rather that, he essentially saw the lines, planes, and colors that comprise nature. Keeping that in mind, Cezanne excluded traditional perspective and took into account the color patterns that an optical analysis of nature offers. Cezanne carefully selected colors to produce the effect of three-dimensional form and space. He understood that the visual properties of different colors are different.

Gustave Moreau is credited for the painting Jupiter and Semele. He enjoyed painting scenes from a dreamy world that was far from reality. He acquired a talent for creating incredibly detailed designs, which he incorporates so well into the painting. The figures in the painting are said to be suspended in motion, which is something Moreau strived for in this particular painting. The fact that he strived for the suspension of the figures in motion signifies that he acquired some knowledge of photography to come up with his final design. In effect, you could label Moreau as a visionary.

Napoleon Bonaparte, also know as "little corporal" by his loyal soldiers and guards, was born August 15, 176, on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. The Bonaparte family were lower class nobles and were not rich so it was a great opportunity for Napoleon when he was awarded a scholarship to the top military school in Paris. Following graduation from the military academy of Paris, he became an artillery officer in 1785.

In 17 Napoleon became captain of artillery and in 17 he was chosen to direct his men against the siege in Toulon. With the fall of Toulon, Napoleon was immediately selected to become the brigadier general. Being a passionate man, Napoleon followed his beliefs by rebelling against the king and supporting the French Revolution. He was made commander of the French army in Italy. The Austrians made peace with France and became its allies as the army expanded after Napoleon defeated them in four successive battles. After these victories he was no longer commander of the army. He was poor. He was suspected of treason. He had no friends.

In 176, Napoleon and his men went to the Parisian streets and shot all the rebels after being appointed to put down the revolt. He did this in a calm and controlled manner. A new government called the Directory was then formed. Bonaparte returned to his former position as commander of the French army in Italy where he surpassed all expectations and proved to his people he had a great military mind. Because of Napoleon's quick mind and great influence, he led his army to many successes. One of these included the crushing of the Sardinian's, forcing them to become allies. His power was unstoppable; he relentlessly led his army in further battles.

After conquering much of Europe he returned to Paris where he had gained the peoples respect. When returning to France Napoleon began thinking of chasing not only military power but also political power. He wanted to be the next Alexander the Great. Bonaparte next attempted to conquer Egypt, India and other middle-eastern places. In 178 Napoleon succeeded in the battle of the Pyramids but unfortunately his fleet was destroyed at the Battle of the Nile. In 17 he defeated 10 000 Turks at Aboukir, but that was only after he had retreated back to Egypt when the English and Turkish troops stood up against Napoleon in his attempt to invade Syria.

Write my Essay on Napoleon cheap

Returning to France, Napoleon found the Directory in a mess and decided it was the perfect time for self-advancement. November , 17, Bonaparte succeeded in overthrowing the Directory with the help of Emmanuel Sieyes. He became the first of three consuls under the new government he himself set up, the Consulate. The French, who now loved Napoleon, voted him as Consul for life three years later. His hunger for power and ruthless competence caused Napoleon to rapidly rise from obscurity to the most powerful figure in France and probably even in Europe. In 1804 Bonaparte crowned himself as Emperor in presence of the Pope. Josephine, his wife, was also crowned and he became Napoleon I, Emperor of France.

While Emperor of France Napoleon's rule had a great impact socially, politically and economically. He created a new French code of law and the key ideas were as follows

1. Equality of all in the eyes of the law

. No recognition of privileges of birth (i.e. noble rights inherited from ancestors)

. Freedom of religion

4. Separation of the church and the state

5. Freedom to work in an occupation of ones choice

6. Strengthening the family by -Placing emphasis on the husband and father as the head of the family -Restricting grounds for divorce to three reasons adultery, conviction of a serious crime and grave insults, excesses of cruelty; however divorce could be granted by mutual agreement, as long as the grounds were kept private. - Defining who could inherit the family property

Napoleon further improved his country by granting constitutions, abolishing feudalism, creating efficient governments and promoting education, science, literature and the arts and on top of all this France was at peace with the world for the first time in over a decade. However, despite all his power, Napoleon had still not created the Great Eastern Empire he dreamed of.

In the winter of 181 Napoleon led his army into Russia hoping to make his dream come true, but it only ended in disaster due to the harsh weather conditions.

In 1815 Napoleon finally met his downfall in Belgium at the Battle of Waterloo. Fighting against Brittain, which was under the rule of Wellington, and the Prussians (north Germans) under Blücher, the great ruler was at last defeated. The British then made Bonaparte a prisoner and sentenced him to the Atlantic island of St. Helena where he died in 181.

Napoleon's rule made a great mark on, not only France, but on the world. Many of the codes he made are remain in practise today and his achievements are still remembered. There is no doubt that Napoleon Bonaparte was a great leader.

I closed the gulf of anarchy and brought order out of chaos. I rewarded merit regardless of birth or wealth, wherever I found it. I abolished feudalism and restored equality to all regardless of religion and before the law. I fought the decrepit monarchies of the Old Regime because the alternative was the destruction of all this. I purified the Revolution.

Ender

The novel, Ender's Game, is the first in a series of stories involving Andrew Ender Wiggin, by Orson Scott Card. At the young impressionable age of six, Ender is taken from the only world he has ever known, to Battle School. Later on at Command School, on the planet Eros, the teachers prepare him for the final battle between the buggers. He is taught that the buggers are his enemy and he has to destroy them in order to save humanity. Throughout the series, Ender is an intriguing character who is expected to do things he doesn't want to do, but is driven by an inner force to succeed no matter the cost or the consequence, however, the love of his sister gets him through his difficult childhood.

From the beginning Ender is misunderstood by all who know him. He wants so much to be like other children, to not be a Third, and yet he can not escape who he is. While in Battle School, Colonel Graff isolates Ender because he has believed from the beginning that Ender possesses special qualities that will save them all. When Ender has his monitor taken out, he knows he is in for trouble. Ender knew the unspoken rules of manly warfare, even though he was only six. It was forbidden to strike the opponent who lay helpless on the ground; only an animal would do that (pg 7, Ender, Card). Yet Ender does the very thing. When questioned about why he repeatedly beat the Stilson boy, Knocking him down won the first fight. I wanted to win all the next ones, too. So they'd leave me alone (pg 1, Ender, Card). With the monitor gone Ender had to look out for himself, for no one would come to his rescue. Ender brutally beats Stilson to protect himself and feels so bad about it afterwards that he, …. leans his head against the wall of the corridor and cried until the bus came ( pg 8, Ender, Card).

Ender is afraid of his brother Peter. Peter is a killer and enjoys it. He is the cause prodding at the back of Ender's mind to push himself and take on more than a child should handle. Ender tries to prove to everyone, but most of all himself, that he is not like Peter. Ender knows that if he stays with his family that Peter will kill him. When Colonel Graff asks Ender to enroll at Battle School, Ender seizes the opportunity. But to escape Peter, he has to leave Valentine. At Battle School Ender tries to be the best he can be because he wants to protect Valentine from the enemy. The only reason I'm here is so that a bugger won't shoot out Valentine's eye, won't blast her head open like the soldiers in the videos of the first battle with the buggers. Won't split her head open with a beam so hot that her brains burst the skull and spill out like rising bread dough, the way it happens in my worst nightmares, in my worst nights, when I wake up trembling but silent, must keep silent or they'll hear that I miss my family, I want to go home.

( pg , Ender, Card). Ender is not a quitter. He is determined to find a solution to the Giant's Drink. He plays it over and over until one day he tries something new. But something happened, He hadn't meant to kill the Giant. This was supposed to be a game. Not a choice between his own grisly death and an even worse murder. I'm a murderer, even when I play ( pg 65, Ender, Card ). Ender knows that the teachers are trying to see how much pressure they can put on Ender before he cracks. Ender also knows that he has no choice but to win in all his battles, no matter how many rules are changed. Bean to Ender, What's the worst that could happen? You lose one game? Ender to Bean, Yes. That's the worst that could happen. I can't lose any games. Because if I lose any - (pg 18, Ender, Card). If he loses he would lose face in school and be treated even worse than he already was by the other commanders. Anderson, Mazer, and Graff know that Ender would not willingly cause harm to the buggers because Ender doesn't fully relate to them, so they trick him. Ender grabbed Mazer's uniform and hung onto it, pulling him down so they were face to face. I didn't want to kill anybody! I'm not a killer! You didn't want me, you bastards, you wanted Peter, but you made me do it, you tricked me into it (pg 8, Ender, Card) !

Ender is forced to make difficult decisions through his sheltered childhood. He takes on more responsibility than he is capable of to the point that he makes himself sick. In moments like this, he remembers Valentine, and their bond. Graff to Valentine, Valentine, I'm trying to leave your family out of this. I'm coming to you so I don't have to start a battery of tests on Peter and question your parents. I'm trying to solve this problem now, with the person Ender loves and trusts the most in the world, perhaps the only person he loves and trusts at all ( pg 145, Ender, Card). Ender feels manipulated and used. The one real thing, the one precious real thing was his memory of Valentine, the person who loved him before he ever played a game, who loved him whether there was a bugger war or not, and they had taken her and put her on their side ( pg 151, Ender, Card).Ender hates himself because he thinks he is turning into Peter. He also hates for a brief moment that Valentine is scared of him. He would never do anything intentionally to hurt her. See what I'm becoming, Val? he said softly. Even you are afraid of me. And he touched her cheek so gently that she wanted to cry. Like the touch of his soft baby hand when he was still an infant (pg , Ender, Card).

Please note that this sample paper on Ender is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. Johnson was part of the Youth Quake of the 160s and the New York scene of Andy Warhol and the Velvet Underground. She began her foray into retail selling by the end of the decade.

In 17 Johnson won the coveted Coty Award along with fellow designer Halston. By 178 she and a partner had started the Betsey Johnson label. Today there are more than Betsey Johnson stores around the world. In recent years Johnson also launched a successful luxury collection of clothing

Betsey Johnson was born in Connecticut in 14 and spent her childhood years in dance classes with dreams of becoming a professional dancer. This love of costumes and theatrics at an early age has contributed an enormous influence to the style and colors Betsey is drawn to and uses in her clothing lines. In 164 Betsey won Mademoiselle magazines Guest Editor Contest and was introduced into the world of fashion. Only one year later she became the top designer at the popular clothing boutique Paraphernalia.

During the 160s Betsey was part of the Warhol scene, an influence that is also reflected in her dramatic and innovative clothing line. In 16 Betsey opened her first boutique, named Betsey Bunki Nini to great success, and as a result was offered a job working for Alvin Dunskin in San Francisco. In the 170s Betsey had creative control over the Alley Cat label and in 17 she was awarded the prestigious Coty award and became the youngest designer ever to receive the honor.

In 178 Betsey started her signature Betsey Johnson label with the first store in Soho. It was such an enormous and immediate success that there are now more than 41 stores worldwide across Europe and Asia. Today Betsey is well known among celebrities and the public for her bold colors and patterns and her cutting edge flair. Among her clients are the likes of Britney Spears, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Minnie Driver, to name a few.

Betsey Johnson was born on August 10, 14 in Wethersfield, Connecticut. Growing up, Betsey aspired to be a Broadway dancer. Her love of dance and the costumes that her mother made for her childhood performances served as her first inspiration to design clothes.

In 164, Betsey entered the New York fashion scene by winning Mademoiselle magazines Guest Editor Contest. One year later, in 165, she landed the top designer job for Paraphernalia, a clothing boutique located in Soho. From sexy silhouettes to hippie, flowing fashions, all of Betseys designs had the whimsical detailing and fabulous fit that became her trademark.

Being a part of this new youth quake Betsey found herself immersed in the unforgettable 160s New York Warhol scene, married John Cale of The Velvet Underground, and had Edie Sedgwick as her fit model.

In 168, Betsey left Paraphernalia, which closed its doors soon thereafter. In 16, a new boutique, Betsey Bunky Nini opened on Manhattans Upper East side. The store was born from Betseys friendship with Bunky and Nini, which began in Paraphernalias design room. Having a retail store in New York and a job offer from Alvin Duskin in San Francisco made Betsey Johnson bicoastal for the last years of the 60s.

A new decade offered Betsey a new career opportunity; creative control for the label Alley Cat. If Paraphernalia defined the style of the 60s, Alley Cat set the trends for the 70s rock and roll clothing with a hippie, ethnic flair. In 17, Betsey won the coveted Coty Award, the youngest designer ever to receive the honor. She also became the youngest designer to create patterns for Butterick.

In 175, Betseys daughter Lulu was born. Motherhood and children inspired Betsey, and soon she was hired to design Betsey Johnsons Kids. During the freelance years that followed, Betseys design efforts ran the gamut from dancewear at Capezio to shoes for I Miller, to menswear and maternity clothing.

In 178, Betsey formed a partnership with Chantal Bacon and started the Betsey Johnson label as it is known today. Their first retail store opened in New Yorks Soho. Betsey Johnson clothing is also available in major department stores including Barneys, Bloomingdales, Nordstrom and Macys. Worldwide distribution includes Canada, Europe and Japan.

In 15, Betsey launched a signature perfume, followed by a line of bath and beauty products. These products are sold exclusively at Betsey Johnson stores nationwide.

After exploring the extensive archives of her early designs, Betsey was ready for a new luxury collection. In 16, Ultra by Betsey Johnson was born. Drawing upon her vast repertoire of silhouettes, this new signature collection features modern, sexy shapes reinterpreted in exquisite fabrics, beading, embroidery and lace.

Making clothes involves what I like...color, pattern, shape and movement...I like the everyday process...The people, the pressure, the surprise of seeing the work come alive walking and dancing around on strangers. Like red lipstick on the mouth, my clothes wake up and brighten and bring the wearer to life...drawing attention to her beauty and specialness...her moods and movements...her dreams and fantasies.

Betsey Johnson Rule-Breaker

Fashion designer Betsey Johnson has always marched to the beat of her own drum, creating exuberant clothes for more than three decades and thriving as a single mom, entrepreneur and breast cancer survivor.

Youd never guess by looking at her, but quirky, bright-haired fashion designer Johnson enjoyed a staid, serene, WASP-ish childhood in Connecticut. The middle child of three, Johnson discovered a talent for drawing and crafting as early as the third grade. She also loved dancing; she started taking classes at the tender age of four. Johnsons Broadway-trained dance teacher was instrumental in shaping the girls destiny, encouraging her to make her own costumes and teaching her the joy of working with a theme.

After graduating in 160, Johnson attended schools in New York. Then, in 64, she entered her fashion sketches in a Mademoiselle magazine contest and won a trip to London. After her return, Johnson took a job as an illustrator at the magazine and began a side project making Mod-influenced miniskirts and dresses for her fellow editors. In 165, the talented youngster made a deal with a hot Manhattan boutique called Paraphernalia, and her designs became somewhat of an overnight sensation with the A-list set, including actress Julie Christie. By the early 170s, Johnson had won accolades for her fashion creations, and she became a member of the downtown in crowd and started to make good money. But then a somber and subdued style of the moment emerged, and her whimsical clothing seemed ill-fitted for the trend. Suddenly, Johnson was having trouble making ends meet. In April 175, she gave birth to a daughter named Lulu, whose father was a former lover. In order to make money for her family of two, Johnson took freelance gigs making kids clothes and sewing patterns.

With the advent of punk rock and MTV in the late 80s, Johnsons star looked up again. She and a friend decided to start their own company, Betsey Johnson Inc., to sell Johnsons wild, wacky designs. The new clothing line was an instant success, selling like hotcakes and catching the eye of celebrities such as Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. The designer soon opened boutiques throughout Manhattan and in other big cities. In addition, Johnson delighted in her role as doting mother. Although Lulu was embarrassed by her moms unconventional ways when she was young, she came to embrace them as a teenager. Eventually, the two women became best friends and even business partners when Lulu came aboard her mothers company after graduating from high school.

Just before Christmas in 1, Johnson discovered a lump in her left breast. Just before her company holiday party, Johnsons worst fears came true when her doctor informed her that a biopsy had revealed she had breast cancer. Johnson, who underwent surgery and radiation treatments, initially kept her disease a secret, but eventually decided to use her experience to help other women. She has been an active member of Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, a nonprofit organization that helps raise awareness and money for the cause.

I dont think our clothing is really going to go through a massive change until we start going to other atmospheres.

-- Betsey Johnson, designer

Known for her outlandish creations, Betsey Johnson has helped push the fashion industry forward for more than three decades. She sees a time when clothes will be utilitarian, geared for such things as space travel. But Johnson has hopes that individuality will always prevail over the uniform.

A lot of people dont realize that fashion is art. {ellipsis} But I also have an appreciation for clothes that are also affordable and wearable, but original, which is why I love Betsey Johnson

The best example of terrorism in the present day was the attack on the Americans on September 11th when the world trade centre was destroyed. It certainly caught the attention of the world and succeeded in its goal. Terrorism is defined as using terror-inspiring methods of governing is this a productive political strategy?

Terrorists usually campaign for their political view to be enforced. By drastic, extreme methods, such as the September 11th attack, terrorists are able to inspire fear and make their views known in effective ways. USA civilians mourned the loss of life on September 11th but they also mourned over their loss of faith in the system that protects them from any attack. This fear was created by terrorism.

Action taken by terrorists is made more significant by the inevitable publicity terrorists crave. Gaining the public eye allows terrorists to emphasise the political point they are campaigning about well, which is exactly the desired effect of terrorist attacks. It is evident that terrorism is a successful means of displaying a message because US President George Bush made clear the motive of the suicide bombers on September 11th. He advertised their cause for them.

Order custom research paper on Terrorism is a Productive Political Strategy

A "war on terrorism" is almost impossible as terrorism is what might be called an abstract concept. Terrorism cannot be demolished through plain hand-to-hand combat, as the USA discovered in the Vietnam War against the communist guerrillas. Terrorism can only be abolished by the causes of terrorism being abolished, making the world a place free of grievances, which is almost impossible to achieve. Certain terrorist movements can be combated by intelligence agencies. However, terrorist operations ensure that their plans will not be known by many people, so it is extremely difficult for the intelligence agencies to find out what they are doing. This method of terrorist organisation is extremely difficult to counter, making it a strong, reliable strategy.

Terrorism may bring a political cause to the world's attention, but it frequently destroys any sympathy which others may have for the fighters. Terrorist attacks are frequently targeted at civilians, which is widely felt to be unfair. In the long term, indiscriminate violence is probably counter-productive.

Terrorism is a highly successful way of communicating to the world a political message and is used by many groups, like al-Qaida. It creates fear, it publishes the political messages terrorist want to convey and it is almost impossible to combat. These factors make terrorism a productive political strategy.

Barn Burning" is about the struggle of a boy to do what is right during the Post Civil War era. The main character, Sartoris Snopes, is a poor son of a migrant tenant farmer. In the opening scene he is being asked by a circuit judge about the burning of a farmer's barn by his father. The boy does not tell on his father and is not forced to do so, but he thinks that he would have done so had he been asked. The father, Abner Snopes, served in the Civil War for both sides and has difficulty venting his anger. Usually he does so through the burning of other people's barns when they wrong him. The symbol of blood is used by Faulkner to contribute to the theme of loyalty to the family.

One use of blood is shown when the boy is called to testify and is pressured by his father to lie. When the boy is on stand he is stressed by the fear that his father will do something crazy if he tells on him. Also, his father tells him that some things are more important than the truth, that family is the most important thing. "You were fixing to tell them. You would have told them"(484). This statement made by Abner shows how the boy truly feels about his blood father's actions and where he stands when it comes to telling a lie or the truth regarding those actions. Also, the scene where that statement takes place depicts how the father feels about family. He thinks that a lie is justified if you are doing so for another family member in order to keep them from suffering consequences. The use of blood is also evident when the boy thinks, "our enemy, Ourn! Mine and hisn both! He's my father"(481). Here this shows that the father has done this before and the boy is used to dealing with it.

The use of blood is also utilized when the father explains that the family must stick together. Following the courthouse scene the boy and his father talk about the incident and Abner states, "You got to learn to stick to your own blood or you ain't going to have any blood to stick to you"(484). In saying this, it is almost as if he is trying to convince the boy to lie for his own blood.

The boy despises his father for all the horrible things he has done to people in the past, yet he still sticks up for him. After Abner has deliberately destroyed Major DeSpain's expensive imported rug his son states, "You done the best you could", "If he wanted hit done different why didn't he wait and tell you how?"(488). Thus providing evidence that the boy still has some respect for his "blood", and though he is against his father's actions he still supports them because he is family.

In Today's American society we fail to address several issues that need to be solved. Unfortunately, child abuse is one of the major issues that our country is plagued with, yet we neglect to bring this to the attention of the entire nation. It is often over looked because everyone has a different view of what exactly defines child abuse. To set the record straight there are four basic forms of child abuse emotional abuse, neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse (ICAN).

Emotional Abuse (also known as Verbal abuse, mental abuse, and psychological maltreatment), includes acts or the failures to act by parents or caretakers that have caused or could cause, serious behavioral, cognitive, emotional or mental disorders. This can include parents/caretakers using extreme and/or bizarre forms of punishment, such as confinement in a closet or dark room or being tied to a chair for long periods of time or threatening or terrorizing a child. Less severe acts, but no less damaging are belittling or rejecting treatment, using derogatory terms to describe the child, habitual scape goating or blaming, the child (ICAN).

Neglect, which is the failure to provide for the child's basic needs. Neglect can be physical, educational, or emotional. Physical neglect can include not providing adequate food or clothing appropriates medical care, supervision, or proper weather protection (heating or coats), to the child. Educational neglect can include failure to provide appropriate schooling or special educational needs, allowing excessive truancies, to the child. Psychological neglect is the lack of any emotional support and love, never attending to the child, spousal abuse, drug and alcohol abuse including allowing the child to participate in drug and alcohol use (ICAN).

Physical Abuse, is the inflicting of physical injury upon the child. This may include, burning, hitting, punching shaking, kicking beating, or otherwise harming a child. The parent or caretaker may not have intended to hurt the child, the injury is not an accident. It may however, been the result of over-disciplines or physical punishment that is inappropriate to the child's ages (ICAN).

Custom writing service can write essays on arms around

Sexual Abuse is the inappropriate sexual behavior with an adult to a child. It includes fondling a child's genitals, making the child fondle the adult's genitals, intercourse incest, rape, sodomy, and sexual exploitation. To be considered child abuse these acts have to be committed by a person responsible for the care of a child (for example a baby-sitter, a parent, or a day care provider) our related to the child. If a stranger commits these acts, it would be considered sexual assault and handled solely by the police and criminal courts (ICAN).

Children are affected horribly by child abuse. It ruins their lives. Child abuse is on a steady rise in the United States. Between the year 186 and 1 the number of reported child abuse incidents doubled for 1.4 million to .8 million (Mill, 1). In 14, over million children were reported for child abuse and neglect to child protective service agencies in the United Sates (AAPC).

According to a 14 survey, physical abuse represented 1% of confirmed cases, sexual abuse 11%, neglect 4% and emotional maltreatment % (AAPC). Only half of these incidents are reported to law officials.

This issue is very important to our society today. In a persons lifetime he/she will more than likely know someone who has been abused. Many child abuse incidents occur, but often times they are not reported by the child. Some may think that it would be easy for a child to report that a loved one is abusing them, but actually the child is afraid of disappointing their parent. Even when a child does decide to report and abusive parent, there is no guarantee that they will receive any punishment for the judicial system. Over 0%j of child sexual abuse cases present to prosecutors do not go to trial (Mill, 1) Over half are not charged or eventually has the charges dropped. When charges are dismissd the child begins to fell that what the parent did to them is right.

Step Two Analyze the Problem

Child abuse has been around in our society for as long as any one can remember. The link between substance abuse and child abuses has strengthened over the years. It is estimated that substance-abusing parents directly affect nine to ten million children under the age of eighteen (Ogintz). In 14, eleven states had average of 5% of their substantiated cases involve substance abuse, with the percentage ranging from % to 65% (Wiese and Daro).

This problem is very serious. It not only messes up the child's life, but as well as the offender. The child will have to live with this guilt for the rest of his/her Leif. Also to violator will have to deal with this too.

Step Three Determine Criteria

Some solutions to this problem are getting involved in a child's life. Another good possible solution would be to get involved in one's religion. There are some religions that believe tin spanking a child as a form of punishment. Although it is against the law, to spank a child, and parents have lived by the law that spanking is not legal. The downside of this form of religion is that The punishment is often times a taken too far. This will eventually lead to some form of abuse.

If someone is abusing their child the time it takes for both the child and the abuser it recover may tae a long time

How Divorces Affect Children In our society families are divided everyday. The circumstances vary, but they still cause traumatic behavior towards those who are irate about their families separating. It seems to be a delimma for parents that no longer acquire each other's company to be subjective about their separation, but what if children are involved. Parents have a tendency to make choices about their marriage with animosity and revulsion towards one another, but what about the siblings. What did they do? Therefore, it is an inequity for parents to divorce with children, because their kids' lives will be impacted tremendously. A separated mother and father has a dissatisfying affect on children. It is very hard for a child, who has been raised by both parents; to one day only have majority access to one parent. This is a situation through which kids develop inaccurate thoughts as to why their parents are not together. Blame sometimes corrupts the child's thoughts and eventually the child perceives he/she may be the reason their parents separated. Children are left in the dark numerous times. Children develop revulsion towards the parent whom they feel has caused this terrible situation. A constant question, Why? Their parents would not want to be together anymore. The child now acts with an attitude around the parents. In a rebellious way the child deliberately commits disobedience. Being that they are already demoralized the child feels no remorse in acting out of discontent. This becomes even worst when there is more than one child. Two or more children in this situation may wonder will they have to separate also. And in some cases children do separate parents. Besides the negativity between the parents the children can be influenced by the animosity generated between the parents. Now they to perceive thoughts of one another, wondering who will get which parent. It is blatant that in situations of the parents having children. The boy goes with the father and the daughter goes with the mother. Eventually the children will take sides and this corrupts their relationship causing division amongst each other. Although parents have their differences and splitting up is the best choice they should still be aware of how it will effect the children/child. Children are the most vulnerable in situations like divorce cases. Children have little affect in their parents' decision to break up. In conclusion, in marriages people must learn to avoid conflict and appreciate whom they have decided to spend the rest of their life with. A divorce causes too much stress and heartache on a child that's why it should be forbidden unless reasons to separate are of the laws of the Bible. Hemingways Short Stories Hemingways Use of Dialogue in Hills Like White Elephants

L. Ackroyd

Printer-friendly version

Ernest Hemingways fiction is renowned for revealing more in its sparseness than the writing of many more verbose authors, and the dialogue in Hills Like White Elephants proves no exception to that rule. Without once using the word abortion, Hemingway graphically evokes the tension between a man and woman waiting for a train as they discuss whether she should have this operation. The authors use of repetition in the dialogue emphasizes a sense of division between the couple. Hemingway also conveys the mans selfish temperament and willingness to rationalize through dialogue, contrasting it with the womans more emotional and arguably deeper view of the situation.

Australias mandatory detention of asylum seekers are of a serious concern. There has been aroused intense national and international debate. In the past few years we have been bombarded with images of detainees suffering from depression, mental anguish, trauma and psychological damage.

Australia has a policy of mandatory detention for all refugees and asylum seekers who arrive by boat to Australian shores (http//www.westnet.com.au/jackhsmit/detention.htm).

Those who have reached Australias shores should not be placed in inhumane conditioned detentions, it is a breach of human rights. There have been proposed alternatives to detention of asylum seekers, many of which should be considered.

The Human Rights Watch has established many reasons to why asylum seekers have come to Australia, many of which to seek safety and hope for a better life. Once reaching Australias shores, for the majority, hope for a better life is not the case. Instead, these aslyum seekers are imprisoned. Many, if not all, are innocent. Being punished for being innocent?

Do my essay on Asylum Seekers In Australia CHEAP !

People working in the field of migrant and refugee, claim that non-genuine applicants for refugee status are a very small minority, this is highly unfair to genuine applicants, the majority. (http//www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au). Like the saying, Keeping the whole class in because one child spoke.

By Australian law, these refugees are eligible to stay on Australian soil. But, under Government policies (administrated by the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA)), asylum seekers are prevented claim of asylum, they not permitted to work, are denied access to medicare and foremost are forced into detention.

These asylum seekers should not be placed in detention, it is unethical.

We are the only developed country to put into practice indiscriminate detention of asylum seekers. We have indeterminately jailed them all - the elderly, the children, the sick and the preganant (A speech by The Hon Justice Marcus R. Einfeld - http//www.westnet.com.au/jackhsmit/detention.htm).

Unauthorised asylum seekers are detained in one of six on-shore or one of three

off-shore detention facilities.

Detention generates the most attention of any asylum issue. These detention facilities are in inhumane conditions, where there are riots, frequent beatings, psychotic breakdowns and suicide attempts. Is this really the sort of place to be living in?

Detention facilities very much resemble jail-like cells - behind razor wires. An investigation from the Federal Parliament Human Rights Committee found conditions in some of the centres appalling, reporting that conditions were often below Australian jail standards.

Asylum seekers have been subjected to unneccessary use of force and have had their rooms trashed by guards for no apparent reason.

The detention facilities in Woomera and Port Headland have attracted the most attention. Both these detention centres are in inhospitable remote locations with overcrowded conditions. Both have also generated violent riots and breakouts.

Human rights have been violated due to the conditions of these detentions; restricted access to services; and restricted access to judicial review.

These asylum seekers have come to Australia to sought refuge in a, what was thought to be a compassionate and humane country, not to be sentence to imprisonment.

There have been proposed alternatives to detention of asylum seekers - The Alternative detention model and The Detention Standards Document. Both wanting similar outcomes.

The treatment of aslyum seekers is inhumane, the Australian government should provide a more flexible detention regime. They should only detain these people for only a limited period - enough for a complete health and criminal check, a prediction of less than a month.

After initial compulsory checks, asylum seekers awaiting for their status to be decided should be allowed to roam freely in communities, with access to facilities, support and help.

They should only be detained if they pose a threat to communities/Australia.

There should be closure to detention centres and for them to be replaced with reception centres with community support suggested by Pamela Curr - Victorian Greens spokesperson on refugee (http//www.resistance.org.au/zine/news4.html). These receptions would be friendlier places, with leisure and educational facilities - open spaces.

The housing of asylum seekers in well-resourced, open receptions while their claims are to be decided offers the most logical and humane alternative

Although, there may be some restrictions on what they are allowed to do and are not allowed to do, this is a much better alternative to the current mandatory detention system.

Australia has turned a blind-eye to the fact that one of the reasons for asylum seekers leaving their country of origin is because of risk of persecution and have come to Australia to sought protection, their treatment here in Australia is unjust.

The Australian government should provide a more felixble system. The asylum seekers have not come to Australia to be imprisoned, yet we are treating them as criminals. What really have they done wrong but to seek a better life for their family?

'The Roaring Twenties' was a time of change, a boom for economy and unprecedented prosperity. The decade following the First World War had it all. It was a decade where transport, technology, communication and entertainment grew. It was also a time when women had more liberation. However, the label 'The Roaring Twenties' is only appropriate to some certain extent. Not everyone benefited from the boom, this included African Americans, farmers, migrants and those employed in old industries. Prohibition attracted organized crime and corruption. This proved that life wasn't perfect for every American during the Roaring Twenties.

One of the reasons why the decade following the First World War is referred to the 'Roaring Twenties' was because of the improvement of transport. The 10s was a decade of mass production and the development of the automobile revolutionised the petroleum, steel and rubber industries. Automobiles changed the American way of life. People moved further from the crowed cities because now, they could drive to work. This lead to a development of more suburbs, streets and highways. New job opportunities were opened for the assembly line, road construction and highways. American social lives changed because they were able to attend leisure activities. The automobile gave more Americans (especially young people) more freedom. The truck industry also started to grow. More industries started to develop because they were able to transport and trade more goods. The development of buses also increased which allowed more Americans to travel and have more leisure and entertainment. Aircrafts suited for passengers also allowed Americans to travel.

Technological and communication advances played a major role in the decade where Americans improved their lives thus the name 'Roaring Twenties' is given for the 10s. Access to electricity became more common. In 11, only one third of American homes had electricity, by 1, that figure had climbed to two thirds (1). Electricity helped managed homes and businesses much easier and led for new and innovative products to enter the market. Appliances became more common as people could purchase them on credit and they promised consumers more time to leisure activities (). Appliances eased the amount of housework and this gave people an opportunity to go out for leisure and entertainment. Communication also increased and this allowed for Americans to socialise more and get current news straight away. During the 10s, the number of homes with phones increased from million to1 million (). Also in this decade, the building industry grew immensely, since electricity was present. With the new industries and the prosperity in America, confidence rose and some companies demonstrated this by portraying their power and wealth with their new and taller buildings.

Another reason why the 'Roaring Twenties' was an appropriate label for the decade after World War One was the increase of entertainment and leisure. The 10s was also a decade of prosperity and there was an increase in leisure time. Americans socialised more, became influenced by radio and went to dancehalls and cinemas more regularly. Radio provided people a source of entertainment they could share. By 10, forty percent of all homes in the USA had a radio set (4). Since people had more leisure time and desired for escape and entertainment they went to the cinemas. By 1, ten million people were going to the cinema each week (5). Cinema became popular because it was cheap. Dancing and music also became more popular and many young people went to dancehalls daily.

This decade was also known as the Jazz Age and this type of music made its way to radio, becoming more popular than ever. All these entertainment and leisure activities turned the decade around. Americans enjoyed socialising and it helped people put the hardships of war behind them.

Women's lifestyles changed immensely and this attributed to the reason why the label the 'Roaring Twenties' was given in the 10s. The roles of women were changing after World War One ended. One fundamental change was that women gained the right to vote in 10. This meant they could have their own say and from there, more political power. During World War One, women had worked in areas where only men had worked. This encouraged them to search for more jobs. By the end of the decade there were over 10 million women in paid employment- a 5 percent increase in 10 (6). Women's college enrolment arrived the same decade and women were able to get professions in teaching, social work and nursing. Due to the appliances which saved time, women had more time to go out and attend cinemas, dance halls and clubs. Advertising was aimed at young women and magazines and radio influenced women during that decade. Young women dressed in a fashion that outraged their mothers, they were known as flappers. Flapper was a name given to a liberated women (7) and they took advantage of their newly fond freedom. It was a decade where women's expectations changed. They were plotted now as having more political power and more freedom and opportunity.

On the other hand, the 'Roaring Twenties', the name given to the decade after the First World War only comes to an extent. Besides being a decade of prosperity, corruption increased and organized crime became well known. Organized crime came about after Prohibition was passed out in 11. This was the ban of alcohol but it was merely an encouragement for wild partying where alcohol flowed freely (8) and crime. Gangsters who disobeyed Prohibition laws controlled America's underworld during the decade. Al Capone was a very notorious figure and was the king of beer barons. He operated distilleries, breweries and a number of speakeasies. Bootlegging also became quite popular. Al Capone was responsible for 500 murders, those whom most of them tried to cut his illegal alcohol operations. Overall, prohibition was a failure because of profits, problems of enforcement, corruption and or course, organised crime.

Marginalised groups did not reflect a boom at all, supporting the reason that the 'Roaring Twenties' is a name given to the 10s only to some extent. Despite the boom, America was a divided society. It was only the rich and some middle class families who benefited during the decade following the war. Some families became even poorer during the 10s. In 18, the number of people living below the poverty line, increased to an estimated 4 percent of the American population (). Many farmers became bankrupted shortly after the war. Between 10 and 10 the number of farmers declined for the first time in American history (10). Farming families were evicted or had to sell their property to get out of debt. Some left to look for work in California while others had nothing left at all. New immigrants faced resentment and took any jobs because they weren't highly educated. The majority of them lived in grim big city neighbourhoods and worked in sweatshops at low wages. People who worked in old industries also didn't prosper.

New products were replacing raw materials which resulted for old industries to lower wages, drop safety standards and even close several industries. African Americans were also amongst the marginalised groups. In the South, economic conditions had changed little since slavery. Three quarters of a million black farm workers lost their job during the 10s (11). Those who moved to the north to seek employment suffered discrimination with low wages and were threatened by groups such as the Ku Klux Klan. They were a group of people who fought for native white, Protestant supremacy (1). They terrorised certain groups of people such as African Americans during the decade.

In conclusion, the decade following the First World War was referred to as 'The Roaring Twenties' because it impacted American society in a positive way. There was exceptional prosperity and the growth in economy which resulted in significant change. Yet, not all saw it as a boom. Despite the leisure high class and some middle class people had, there was suffering for farmers, immigrants, African Americans and people who worked in old industries. There was also a presence of corruption and organized crime. Clearly, the boom in America didn't mean it happened to everyone.
