The college life

Growing up I could not wait until that last day of my high school life. I was now in college the next big step to being on my own. For the first time I would not have my friends or mom there to hold my hand when I get into a troubling situation. I knew this was going to be a big step for me but I was just as excited, as I was nervous. Deciding to go to college and then what college to attend involves three major influences economically feasible, socially, and family/peer pressure.

Sierra College was my first step into the real world; a small junior college no bigger then the high school I graduated from. I was only here to complete my GED then move onto Sacramento State where I will get a degree business management. Sacramento State is going to be an overwhelming jump for me; I will not be use to the traffic of Sacramento or the city life. I have lived in Grass Valley my whole life. I am willing to change that for higher opportunity in life. Once I complete my two to three years at Sierra College then I will move down to the Sacramento area and start my journey down there.

Sacramento State is a tremendous College with a dramatic change in population. I am going to have to get use to getting lost and asking people where is business 101. I will feel as if I am a freshman again. I am going to have to get over the girls and parties that will face me at Sac St. I have heard many great things about Sac St. and I have heard a lot about the wild side it contains within its walls. I am going to have to concentrate on my work and balance my time between homework and play time. I am going to room with some of my friends at there house so getting a job will be one of the top priorities on my list to go along with the hundred other task I must do.

Sacramento State offers a lot to their students and one of the things I love the most is football. Saturday night when my team plays I will be in the front row cheering them on. Then you got the after party after the game; after the party you got the post after party. So there will be much partying going to go along with studying. Another exciting detrimental activities Sac St. offers is the atmosphere of living in the state capital. You got the Kings, River Cats, and about hours away the 4ers. All things set aside I must look at my goal which is to graduate from Sac St.

After college I will pursue my career in business and hopefully start being in charge of my own restaurant business. This will hopefully make me rich enough so that I can retire off of it and make my name famous to all the restaurants in the world. None of this would be possible though if I didn't want to go college and have the dream of owning my own restaurant. That is why the path I have chosen was the right path because in the future when I look back on this essay I will remember me sitting at home and typing this essay out and about what dreams may come next for me. All thinks to my college degree.

First, let us get one thing clear the Abu Sayyaf should be wiped out. Its blatant disregard for the dignity of human life is clear to us all. Reports on the prolonged captivity of children and the brutal slaying of teachers and of Father Gallardo in 000 were poignant enough to drive that point home clearly. There was more to followSipadan, Dos Palmas, Lamitanand many more killed! All in all, it's impossible to ignore the true nature of the Abu Sayyaf.

Do Filipino children know about the Abu Sayyaf? Yes. They are hobbits living in another world predating access to mass media. Do most children know that Abu Sayyaf bandits are "the bad guys?" Yes. And they know that children have also been victims. If children know, surely adults know too. Airing the footage only aroused emotional responses that had little to do with comprehension and concrete steps toward solving the problem.

Does war against these terrorists really have to include careless decisions that affect children? Is the effect on children an actor in making this decision considering that they comprise almost 50 percent of the TV audience? Did they even count?

Studies show that media are a touchstone for children and youth. Next to parents and family, it is the single most influential factor in shaping children's views and values. TV is the most popular source of information and entertainment for Filipino children and youth. They watch an average of two to three hours of TV daily. The peak times for children's TV viewing are 1 to p.m. and the primetime hours, 5 to 10 p.m.

Write my Essay on violence in the media for me

A study on media violence in Philippine television by the Philippine Children's television Foundation shows that Filipino children view an average of 6. incidents of violence for every hour of TV viewing. This means to 1-year-olds can watch an average of 1 violent incidents a day.

Unsupervised

Compared with Europe, we have double the incidence of TV violence per broadcast hour and slightly higher than the United States. Studies also show that most Filipino children watch unsupervised and are allowed to watch adult TV programs. In addition, many urban kids play video and computer games heavily laden with physical violence.

Put together, this means that some children already have a media diet heavy with violence. Watching the Abu Sayyaf beheading video on TV was like bringing on bags of junk food on a full stomach. Aside from instilling fear, there is the other extremeit may have trivialized the issue for some children.

We must analyze and understand the impact of this decision within the context of children's interaction with various media and their exposure to real-life violence in daily life. When combined with life in high-risk, high-crime rate and conflict areasthe reality for a good number of Filipino children living in communities closer to where armed conflict ragesthe effects of exposure to such graphic images of brutality cannot be ignored.

This is consistent with one of the important conclusions of the UNESCO Global Study on media violence. There is less to worry about in the case of children who live and grow in stable, secure homes, who can count on parents or other adults to regulate their exposure to media violence or who benefit from teacher support in schools with some attention to media education. But sadly, that is not the case for many of our children. Consider these one in six suffers from neglect while one in three drops out before Grade 6. Barely / of 1 to 1 year-olds live with both parents. A total of 40, 84 children aged 5 to 17 live away from home.

Misconceptions about Muslims

Another important risk taken was that of promoting misconceptions and generalizations about Muslims. The video was shocking and visually graphic so that there could hardly be any attention paid to the voice-over that could have clarified its context, e.g. the people, when, why, etc., to preempt such misconceptions. The ensuing debate and revelations about the identity of the "hacker/s" only added to the confusion.

The power of visual comprehension overwhelms other senses and higher level cognitive processes. Children are highly sensorial and this plays a very critical role in their learning processes. This is precisely the allure of visual mediamany children are visual learners so it matches their learning styles.

Children comprehend things differently compared to adults, not because they are less intelligent but precisely because they have qualitatively different ways of thinking at specific stages of growth and development. Children interpret things from a mental framework on which they build their understanding of their world. Imagine the "mental framework" for many children who unfortunately do not have the opportunity to interact with fellow Filipino Muslims, which would be the best way of counteracting misconceptions. The media often carry reports about the violence in Mindanao.

Many children do not understand the history of these conflicts, much less figure out the roles of many groups involved. They simply know that bombings, kidnappings, hostage taking, armed conflict are part of life in Mindanao. They know that there are many Muslims in Mindanao. It is highly likely that they can over-generalize that Muslims are prone to violence, are perpetrators rather than victims of violence.

Why is this likely? Most children learn very little about Muslim cultures and even less about Islam as a religion because majority of them goes to schools where there is little attention paid to teaching about these. They also hear influential adults talking about their uniformed opinions. No adult above age 0 today can claim to have a comparable degree of exposure to media violence as today's children do. So the oft-repeated dismissive statement, "look I watch violence on TV and movies too but I'm OK! I'm not violent," just won't fly.

Desensitized

One of the most harmful effects of high exposure to media violence is already apparent us desensitization to violence. This "to see is to believe" attitude is evidence that desensitization may be prevalent. Judging from responses to informal TV surveys supporting the continuing airing of the beheading footage, it is evident that decades of escalating levels of media violence from TV, film and computer games has taken its toll even among adults who consider it acceptable. There is a great risk for children so used to media violence to develop a laid back "I don't care, it doesn't affect me, it doesn't matter" attitude to real-life violence.

Real-life violencewhether witnessed firsthand or via replays on TVleaves imprints on young children's brains that can never be justified as educational. Graphic and gratuitous violencereal or fictionharm children especially those aged 1 and below. So we must spare them if we want to grow up free from this and other documented harmful effects of this potent combination of high levels of exposure to media violence with life in high-risk areas extreme fearfulness and distrust, heightened aggression, misconceptions about effective ways of resolving conflicts.

Twenty-four hours after the /11 tragedy journalists, parents and educators in the US raised the alarm about the repeated use of the footage of the crashing planes and collapsing of the Twin Towers. All the TV networks heeded the call for prudence and decided to stop or minimize airing the footage to protect children from the harmful effects of repeatedly viewing those images. What we saw on our own newscasts was not what the Americans watched in their own homes post-/11.

Build peace

Yes, we need to educate ourselves and our children about the grim social realities affecting our country, but there are more effective ways that will not harm our children. The more important message we all badly need to hear is the reassurance that the government can indeed defeat the Abu Sayyaf, better yet, finally builds peace in war-torn Mindanao. There are more important and moving stories to tell about the impact of war on people's lives the daily struggles of displaced families in Basilan and elsewhere in Mindanao where children stop schooling, suffer from malnutrition and illness, live in constant fear and confusion.

Graphic images to emphasize the horrors of terrorism will not help win the war against it. Unfortunately, the Abu Sayyaf bandits are not characters in a cartoon of computer game that can be annihilated with a keyboard. But by transporting those "unverified" Abu Sayyaf images to households via TV, the government actually played the game of terrorists, producers and distributors of the video in the first place. Did they stop and think about the impact of this "media game" on our children after "GAME OVER" flashes on our screens or end credits roll? Now, that is reality that we should be prepared to confront in the coming years. Are we prepared for the costs?

After watching the movie, writing down different quotes and realizing that this movie was based on a true story, I thought about how amazing Morrie Schwartz really was. There was one quote that really stuck out in my mind, When you learn how to die, you learn how to live.

This quote among others really hit me hard because I see things the same way that Morrie Schwartz did. I like the feeling of knowing that other people out there, see things the same way I do.

What exactly did Morrie Schwartz mean when he said, When you learn how to die, you learn how to live.? Well, in my opinion, our society to too frightened of death. People cant live their lives to the fullest, because they know they are going to die some day. I say, if you know you are going to die some day, why wouldnt you want to do everything youve ever dreamed of?

Write your Tuesdays With Morrie research paper

Our society idolizes death, we make it out to be this grand event. A time when everyone must wear all black, and mourn. Why? Everyone dies. But does everyone live?

Until people can deal with the fact that we all die and stop making such a big deal about it, we will never be free of the burden of death.

People have to realize that they are ruining their lives worrying about dying. They have to accept that they are going to die and move on. Family members and friends, should also realize that if and when somebody they know dies, they should not waste their time mourning. They should be out enjoying their own lives.

In conclusion, I think that people have to live their lives. They should look at how their lives are going and make the necessary changes. As long as we worry about death, we dont live.

Reviving Ophelia

In this book therapist Mary Pipher writes about her experiences at work with adolescent girls. It is intended to make the reader aware of the perils of being a teenager in todays sexualized and media-saturated culture. She talks about how this new and more hostile environment affects adolescent girls emotional growth and development, and how hard it is to stay true to yourself while trying to fit in with peers. For the most part this book is Dr. Piphers attempt to reach out to adolescents, as well as their parents and teachers, and tell them that this problem without a name is not a death sentence but rather a journey to adulthood, and tells adults how to help these impressionable young girls through what might be the most trying period of their lives.

Mary Pipher, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Lincoln, Nebraska. Her teen years were spent in the sixties, a time radically different from our own. When she first went into practice she was shocked at the different types of problems that had arisen since she was an adolescent. Many problems that plague todays youth were ones that hadnt existed during Dr. Piphers youth. She acknowledges our unique struggles and unfortunately has witnessed girls who have lost all sense of self.

Do my essay on reviving ophlelia CHEAP !

The title of her book comes from the story of Ophelia, from Shakespeares Hamlet, shows the destructive forces that affect young women. Ophelia was happy and free when she was young, but she loses herself in adolescence. When she falls in love with Hamlet she pushes aside her own wants and needs, and wishes only to please him and gain his approval. For the rest of her brief life she struggles to please others, mostly her father and Hamlet, and loses sight of who she is and what she wants. Her self value rests solely on other peoples approval of her, this ultimately leads to her demise. When Hamlet shuns her for being an obedient daughter, Ophelia goes mad with grief and drowned herself in a river full of flowers.

I know this probably doesnt exactly happen today, but the theme of Ophelias loss of self is still applicable in the 0s. Many teenage girls feel an unbelievable amount of pressure from their parents and peers to become something that they are not. One girl that Dr. Pipher counseled said I am a perfectly good carrot, but everybody wants me to be a rose. But when they carve me into a rose, I turn brown, wither and die. I think that this quote describes the feelings of any teenagers very accurately. We are under constant pressure to fit the profile of our societys ideals, and sometimes dont realize the impossibility of that goal. Young women see models in their magazines and want to look like them, whatever the cost may be. In the 180s and 10s there was a huge increase in the reported number of

A theme that is apparent in the two novels, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens and Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe, is the clash between two groups with different lifestyles. In A Tale of Two Cities, the conflict occurs between the high-ranking members of society and the poverty-stricken lower class. The tension between the Ibo tribe and the European missionaries is the example from Things Fall Apart. The authors use these two conflicts to create an emotional setting for their books.

In the novel A Tale of Two Cities, Dickens reveals to the reader, what the lower class in France goes through and how hard life is for them. The best example of this takes place outside Defarge's wine-shop. A large cask of wine had been accidentally dropped on the pavement outside. Dickens portrays how the passing peasants scramble to lap up the spilled wine, representing numerous things, the most important being the desperate quality of the people's hunger.

"The wine was red wine, and had stained the ground of the narrow street in the suburb of Saint Antoine, in Paris, where it was spilled. It had stained many hands, too, and many faces, and many naked feet, and many wooden shoes. The hands of the man who sawed the wood, left red marks on the billets; and the forehead of the women who nursed her baby, was stained with the stain of the old rag she wound about her head again. Those who had been greedy with the staves of the cask, had acquired a tigerish smear about the mouth…" (Dickens, pg. 5)

Do my essay on A Tale of Two Cities vs. Things Fall ApartLink essay CHEAP !

This quote shows the mindless frenzy the peasants were in, trying to sop up the wine. It also shows the extreme poverty they were faced with. After the wine was cleaned up, they went back to living their poverty-stricken lives. The rich constantly taunt them, which is still true in modern day times.

The first encounter with the missionaries in Things Fall Apart occurs when they come to Umuofia to set up a Christian church. The Missionaries explain their religion to the tribe and tell them that they should convert to Christianity. The majority of the tribe does not believe that it is morally right to convert. Therefore, only a few people attend the church. This creates animosity amongst the tribe.

"The missionaries had come to Umuofia. They had built their church there, won a handful of converts and were already sending evangelists to the surrounding towns and villages. That was a source of great sorrow to the leaders of the clan; but many of them believed that the strange faith and the white man's god would not last. None of his converts was a man whose word was heeded in the assembly of the people. None of them was a man of title." (Achebe, pg. 14)

The missionaries take advantage of the men who have no titles, and whose word is never listened to so that they can get as many people as they possibly can to convert. If these men joined the church that meant that they were no longer following the leaders of their tribe. This also meant that there were less people to fight against the missionaries.

Another extreme example of the awful attitude that the high-society has towards the peasants can be shown through the Marquis Evremonde. He stands for everything the French Revolution is trying to overcome. The aristocrats have no respect or compassion for the peasants whatsoever. This is solely because of the fact that the upper-class believes they are the most important people in the world, giving them the right to treat others however they wish.

"But for the latter inconvenience, the carriage probably would not have stopped; carriages were often known to drive on, and leave their wounded behind…

'It is extraordinary to me,' said he (the Marquis), 'that you people cannot take care of yourselves and your children. One or the other of you is for ever in the way. How do I know what injury you have done to my horses?'" (Dickens p.100-101)

This quote takes place when the Marquis' carriage runs over a small boy in the streets. It shows a typical reaction that might be expected from a man of his stature, in those days. The Marquis' only concern seemed to be if it had inconvenienced him at all. He did not show any feelings of concern for the father or exemplify any remorse over what had happened.

Things Fall Apart includes a section where some of the clansmen, acting to cleans their village of a sin, burn down the church. The commissioner asks them to discuss the event with him and then when they arrive they are put in jail. Because of their different background, the Europeans believed that they could treat the leaders however they wanted.

"…At night the messengers came in to taunt them and to knock their shaven heads together.

…It was only on the third day, when they could no longer bear the hunger and the insults, that they began to talk about giving in." (Achebe p.15)

The quote gives some idea of how poorly the leaders were treated while they were imprisoned. The messengers seemed to be entertained by making the Umuofia leaders suffer. They did not show any repentance for the treatment of their prisoners, they believed it was ok for them to act that way.

There are six elements that Aristotle sees are essential to dramatic tragedy. There are plot-structure, characters, style, thought, spectacle and lyric-poetry. Aristotle thinks that the most important is structure. I agree with Aristotle when he says, "Without action you would not have a tragedy." Which is why structure is so important in building the action of the plot. And then without characters you have no plot. So plot-structure and characters are the two most important parts. Thought is what makes the tragedy. Characters who possess thought have real character. They know how to project their point and argue a situation. The next thing he talks about is style. He says, "The verbal expression achieved through the choice of words." Style in turn then goes together with thought and characters. He says that lyric-poetry is the most important of "garnishings." With that he means the extra's put into it like rhythm and melody. Spectacle is not really powerful, because the author does not worry about how the tragedy will be acted.

Miller says that tragedy for the kings or the very high people. He says that tragedy should be for the common man and not only the elite. He says "Tragic feeling is evoked in us when we are in the presence of a character who is ready to lay down his life, if need be, to secure on thing---his sense of personal diginity." I think character is important in the way Miller puts it, "the individual attempting to gain his "rightful position in society." I think we can all relate to that even now.

I think that the structure in which Aristotle says is the most important was very good in "Death of a Salesman." The plot built the action right until the very end when Willy killed himself. The characters in this play were very complex. They made the plot thrive into what it was structured to be. I think that the characters had little thought though. They always argued about different things, but never knew how to get their point across. Their fights were pointless and never accomplished anything. The style was okay. Their choice of words goes along with the thought of the play. The characters although complex never got anything accomplished. Miller's point was that tragedy was for the common man. Willy, Biff and Happy were all common, trying to become something in society. That is what the whole play was, becoming someone in society. Willy wanted to be more than the common man and like Miller said he wanted his "rightful position in society". And he wanted his boys to get their position and to obtain what everyone calls "The American Dream." I really tried to relate with Miller more even though I don't know that I totally understood what he was saying. If I did get the whole point, I think the Miller's points of tragedy fit "Death of a Salesman".

The North American Free Trade Agreement joined the United States, Mexico, and Canada in one of the world's largest free trade zones. Over ten years, tariffs on most products were to be progressively removed. In the five years proceeding, additional tariffs would be eliminated. During the Clinton administration, in 14, the first of the proposed reductions took place. The opponents of the agreement felt that the union would cause lowered standards in health and environmental control, job loss, and that uniformity would hinder the United States. Proponents argued that the overall economic benefit for all countries would overshadow the possible ramifications.

Environmentalist were opposed to NAFTA because they felt that Chapter Eleven Laws of the agreement would override laws that protected people's health and environment. In part, the Chapter Eleven law states that a foreign company can sue a government over government measures that allegedly limit the value of their investment. Evidence for this argument is clear in the September 000 case in which a Canadian company sued the United States for one billion dollars because the company could not sell its product due to the state's water protection regulation. Environmental policies were altered for the company. Attempting to harmonize United States health and environmental standards only leads to the degradation of guidelines previously enacted, because to unify with a country like Mexico, which has an extremely low quality of life, the United States must compromise its laws.

As of July 0, 00 more than four hundred thirteen thousand one hundred and twenty-three United States workers were unemployed due to NAFTA. This, however, only represents a small percentage of total job loss because it is a record of the number of people who qualify for aid under the NAFTA Transitional Adjustment Assistance ( NAFTA TAA). This program excludes those who did not know about it, those in the service industry, and those who did not petition the Labor Department. Many of these jobs losses are due to the relocation of companies to Mexico for cheaper labor. When the relocation occurs, the dynamics of the community they leave changes drastically. Because a significant amount of people are out of work, and can not afford to spend their money on the things they once did, many of the other business will be forced to close. This only results in the loss of more jobs.

Uniformity hinders a countries ability to stay at the forefront of technology, growth, and responding to citizen's needs. This argument suggest that if one country is too involved with another, both will not be able to prosper independently. By mandating a unification of the United States with countries that are less advanced, it will only stunt the development of the United States, impeding the general public and government.

Custom Essays on Historical Beliefs Concerning The North American Free Trade Agreement

Economists, multinational corporations in general, and several key political figures include the majority of proponents of NAFTA. They argue that the benefits of this program supercede all negative aspects. Many of those who lobby for the agreement also site the Hecksher Ohlin Theory, which states that if one nation is capital abundant and another nation is labor abundant, than if these two countries joined together each would benefit most effectively from its most plentiful resources. In theory, because the United States has a large amount of capital and Mexico is rich in labor, the union of the two would create a joint partnership that was mutually beneficial.

In retaliation to the opponents' views the following give reasons why NAFTA can not possibly cause the before mentioned problems. Job loss is curved by the influx in employment by exports, and the companies that move to Mexico were not previously bound to remain in the United States. Therefore, if NAFTA did not exist, the companies would have most likely moved. Environmental problems have been an issue along the Mexican border for years, but now with NAFTA, discussions with the Mexican government can begin as to how to solve the situation. NAFTA will also help to reduce immigration by giving Mexican workers the opportunity to find jobs in their country, thus American jobs will not be lost to immigrants. Bibliography

Sorry, I just Adolescent Development

Adolescence is often referred to as the awkward years or the in between years since this process occurs as children transition to adulthood and can be somewhat turbulent. This the period of time when children go through many physical changes as well as changes involving their sexual, psychological, and social states. Someone in the midst of adolescence may describe the process as confusing, or always changing, and even exciting (Lauton, B. & Freese, A. 181).

Adolescence begins with puberty and concludes with adulthood. It is impossible to specify the exact age since maturation varies amongst all children as they grew and mature at different rates (Lauton, B. & Freese, A. 181). In American culture adolescence covers a period of approximately 10 years from about age to age 18. Within this time period, adolescents are affected by various developmental transformations including physical, emotional, and social changes (Newman, B & Newman, P). Due to the vast changes that occur during this period, experts divide the stages of adolescence into 4 stages pre-adolescence (ages to 1 years), early adolescence (ages 1 to 14 years), middle adolescence (ages 15 to 16 years), and late adolescence (ages 16 to 18 years).

Pre-adolescence

Pre-adolescence occurs around nine and continues to approximately age twelve. During this age group, physical growth and development will vary among youth as children grow and develop at different rates. The pre-adolescent is beginning to experience the effects of puberty, which tends to bring emotional changes in addition to their new physical changes. This adolescent may begin to experience such things as facial and underarm hair, changes in their voice, growth of sexual organs, menarche, and acne (Steinberg, L. & Levine, A. 17). They will tend to experience a fluctuation in their energy levels as their eating habits and sleep habits change. Furthermore, pre-adolescents are full of energy and will prefer highly active sports or games with a great desire to excel at these activities. The pre-adolescent is beginning to develop an interest in appearance as they are becoming increasingly self-conscious and aware of others' opinions, which will give way to peer influences over parents in early and middle adolescence. Similarly, the pre-adolescent is very aware of the opposite sex, however, they will play in same-sex groups, as they are unsure of themselves, their feelings, and their changing bodies (St. John's Mercy Health Care, 001).

Early Adolescence

Early adolescence comprises the years from twelve to fourteen. During this stage, there is significant physical and sexual maturation. In addition, extreme mood swings and strong emotions are responses to the ups and downs of life. Physical and hormonal components contribute to these vast and swift changes. This young adolescent experiences life as a roller coaster. They may experience an array of feelings at any given moment such as happy, sad, anxious, and confused. Often the twists and turns of the adolescent life produces physical ailment for them such as headaches, abdominal pains, and fatigue. During early adolescence there is an ever-increasing importance in peer relationships and their need for acceptance. The goal for the early adolescent is to fit in with the crowdto look, dress, and act alike. There is a struggle between self-confidence and inferiority. Parental involvement becomes less and less desired as the early adolescent is beginning to feel more independent from their parents and often will not turn to them in trying times. Still during this stage, there is a strong tendency to maintain same-sex friendships even as the intensity for the opposite sex grows (Reisser, P., 001).

Middle Adolescence

Middle adolescence occurs between fifteen and sixteen years of age. At this time, the teenager has transitioned from middle school to high school. In addition, most of the transformations of puberty have taken place and are underway or in some cases have completed. Physical appearances and attractiveness are still major concerns among this age group as they may have feelings of strangeness with their new developments. Concerns regarding sexual attractiveness arise as opposite-sex relationships are bound to start and move beyond crushes. Peer influences are still strong but teens are able to develop their own ideals. Teens in this age category identify with at least one small group rather than a crowd and there is no longer a need to be like everyone else. Moreover, teens in the age bracket often pride themselves on their differences in dress and style. The main struggle during this time for the adolescent is independence. Middle adolescents tend to have a lowered opinion of their parents and will often withdraw from them. Additionally, teens during this transition often defy parents in order to make their independence clear. With this increase in independence comes and increase in the ability to engage in risky behaviors (Reisser, P. 001).

Late Adolescence

The end of the teen years brings stability to a number of areas. Late adolescence encompasses ages sixteen to age eighteen. Physical appearance is a diminished concern, however, efforts to improve look will continue. Peers have less of an influence at this stage and teens may even turn back to the parents for guidance. However, the late adolescent has the ability to make independent decisions and the ability to think through ideas on their own. Late adolescents have an enhanced ability to express ideas in words and they tend to have a more developed sense of humor. The late adolescent has a firmer sense of his or her own identity and they no longer struggling for independence as they were during the other stages. Late adolescents have greater concern for others and have become more self-reliant. Late adolescents have a higher level of concern for the future and have deep thoughts about one's role in life. They are looking toward other responsibilities such as college, career, serious relationships, sexual identity, future attainment, and so on (Reisser, P. 001).

Task Development in Early Adolescence

There are developments that all adolescents must maneuver. This paper will focus on three developmental tasks and how they transform during early adolescence. The first task to be explored is identity achievement. Next, the paper will shift to peer groups affiliation, and sexuality.

Identity Achievement

Erikson (168) believed adolescence to be a period of self-analysis and self-evaluation in the establishment of self or identity (Allison, B., & Schultz, J. 001). More specifically, this process involves experimenting with different roles, ideas, and behaviors. These young teens want to have the overall say in their lives; they want to make their own choices such as picking their own friends or planning their own activities. Furthermore, early adolescents want to be able think their own thoughts and to dream their own dreams (Steinberg, L. & Levine, A.).

Sarter and James (00) found parental involvement to be a crucial link to identity development during early adolescence. Specifically, those parents who were aware of their child's grades, activities, and friends and who also provided encouragement and support that was evident to the adolescent provided this young teen with a sense of security as they developed their identities. Furthermore, the child's process of individuation became more defined as there was cooperation from the parent to allow the child to be assertive, meanwhile the parent granted independence while both maintained to stay connected with one another (Sarter, C. & James, Y. 00). Similarly, Baumrind (178) demonstrated that children whose parents who were warm and firm showed higher levels of competence (Steinberg, L. & Morris, A. 001). It can be concluded from these findings, that parental involvement plays an enormous role in the early adolescents identity achievement.

Growth toward independence is transition the whole family will encounter that requires changes in the parental and adolescent attitudes and behaviors. When parents attempt to maintain the same amount of control over their young teen as they did during childhood the teen often rebels. However, when the parent exercises flexibility and accepts their teens need for autonomy the transition is relatively smooth (Steinberg, L. & Levine, A. 17).

Chapter

1) What is conservative authoritarianism-how was it practiced in Yugoslavia, Poland, Hungary, and Portugal?

Conservative authoritarianism was the traditional form of antidemocratic government in European History. Leaders of such governments tried to prevent major changes that would undermine the existing social order. To do so, they relied on obedient bureaucracies, police departments, and trustworthy armies. Popular participation in government was forbidden or limited to bureaucrats, high-church officials, and landlords. Conservative authoritarianism developed in Yugoslavia because it was seen as a remedy to repress ethnic conflicts and preserve national unity. This form of government also developed in Poland in order to create a stronger state, especially since it was constantly torn by bitter party politics between Germany and Russia. It also developed in Hungary because large landowners and hostile peasants crushed communism. Thereafter, a combination of great and medium sized landowners instituted a semi-authoritarian regime. Hungary had a parliament, but elections were carefully controlled and the peasants did not have the right to vote. Portugal, constantly shaken by military uprisings after a republican revolution, also developed conservative authoritarianism. The church maintained the strongest possible position in the country.

) What are the characteristics of modern totalitarianism?

Buy cheap chap 29 term paper

Totalitarianism is a form of government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control over the economic, social, intellectual, and cultural aspects of peoples lives. Under totalitarian rule the individual is subordinated to the state and opposing political and cultural expression is suppressed. The totalitarian state used modern technology and communications to exercise complete political power. Totalitarians believed in will power, preached conflict, and worshiped violence. Totalitarianism was in the end a permanent revolution, an unfinished revolution, in which rapid, profound change imposed from on high went on forever.

) What were the goals of Lenins New Economic Policy (NEP)?

Lenins New Economic Policy re-established limited economic freedom in an attempt to rebuild agriculture and industry. With the NEP, Lenin substituted a grain tax on the countrys peasant producers, who were permitted to sell their surpluses in free markets. Peasants were also encouraged to buy as many goods as they could afford from private traders and small handicraft manufacturers, groups that were now allowed to reappear. Economically, the NEP brought rapid recovery. In 16 industrial output surpassed the level of 11, and Soviet peasants were producing almost as much grain as before the war. Counting shorter hours and increased social benefits, workers were living somewhat better than they had in the past.

4) How successful was Stalins Five Year Plans for the industrialization of Soviet Russia? Discuss its positives and negatives?

The aim of Stalins Five Year Plans was to create a new kind of society and human personality as well as a strong industrial economy and a powerful army. Stalins Five Year Plan was for the industrialization of Soviet Russia was relatively successful. The output of industry doubled in the first five-year plan and doubled in the second. Soviet industry produced about four times as much in 17 as it had in 18. Industrial growth also went hand in hand with urban development. Cities rose where nomadic tribes had grazed their flocks. More than twenty-five million people migrated to cities during the 10s. However, the sudden creation of factories required a great increase in total investment and a sharp decrease in consumption. Hence, the money was collected from the people by means of heavy, hidden sales taxes. There was therefore no improvement in the average standard of living. Moreover, trade unions lost all their power, individuals could be sent anywhere in the country, and individuals needed police permission to move.

5) Why were the Russians working harder and relatively happy in the 10s despite a falling standard of living?

Russians were working harder and relatively happy in the 10s despite a falling standard of living because Soviet workers did in fact receive some important social benefits, such as old-age pensions, free medical services, free education, and day-care centers for children. Unemployment was almost unknown. Moreover, there was finally the possibility of personal advancement. Rapid industrialization required massive numbers of trained experts, such as skilled workers, engineers, and plant managers. Thus the state provided tremendous incentives to those who could serve its needs. Furthermore, many saw it as an ideological struggle against capitalism and fascism.

6) How was the status of women affected under Stalinist Russia?

The radical transformation of Soviet society had a profound impact on womens lives. The Revolution of 117 had declared complete equality for all women. In the 10s divorce and abortion were readily available and women were urged to work and liberate themselves sexually. After Stalin came to power sex was downplayed and the greatest changes remained in work and education. Women were continually told of their equality and were able to work in factories. Opportunities open to men were also open to women, but the home and children were still considered a womans responsibility.

First off, Id like to start out my experience by saying that unfortunately I had a bad experience. This is my first time going to a bank carrying such a huge amount of money. I have several deposits but none were as much as this and which all of it went smoothly. I was hoping that this would be the same as my last visit but unfortunately it was not.

It all began a few months ago. I was heading to the bank nearest to my house excited to deposit my money to the bank. I really wanted to get this deposit safely done so my friend and I walked a few steps just to reach the bank as quickly as possible. I couldnt wait! I walked as fast as I could and entered the bank, I asked the lady about some information regarding the deposition of quite a huge sum of money. The interest rate was not bad at all, at the moment I decided to put the money in the back. She told me that the manager was busy and she needed to consult him about this. I had one final question to ask her before I was handing over the money to her. I asked her if I could withdraw my money asking someone to help me. She said that it would be no problem at all, except that he must have a signature of mine. I told her that that was all right and I would remember to do that.

A few weeks actually went by pretty quickly. My friend and I went to withdraw a sum of money from the bank. The more I thought of getting the money the more I wanted to have it with me now. But never did I expect that things did not turn as smoothly as expected.

While we were withdrawing the money we suddenly heard a loud "Bang!" behind of us and everyone ducked down at once. Never did we expect it was a robbery, the robbers quickly moved to the counter and asked the staff to hand over all the money and if any one moved they would shoot any one with hesitation. With no other choice we handed out our valuables and unfortunately the money that we have just withdrawn. As soon as the robbers were satisfied they grabbed everything and ran out of the bank.

After the robbers went, every one was devastated some were crying and some were like us shocked and speechless. I felt so angry but at the same time sad about what had just happened. My friend and I quickly went to the police station to report about the case hoping that there would be a chance of recovering our lost valuables.

After a few months we thought that we have lost our valuables but then both of us received a call from the police station, we were both very happy and rushed down to the police station thinking that our valuables were recovered. The police officers asked us to go into this room which had a row of people carrying number plates with them. The moment I saw the two robbers I immediately pointed out to the police officers.

The officers told us that they could not recover anything but we were glad that at least the robber was caught and would be punished for what they had done.

I've known Willie Lowman since he moved in next door to my family and I. He and I never truly got along, but I believe that I was the only one who completely understood him and the things he went through all those years. To ask if he died in vain is out of the question. Willie Lowman did not die for a reason but also did not die for a reason.

I think the real reason Willie got into his car and ended in killing himself was because he felt so burdened by his lack of money. Willie came to me, putting his pride on the line, and beating around the bush while in my office only to wait for me to offer him money. I gave him the money because I knew he needed it to make his family believe he was doing well out on the road with the buyers. Willie killed himself to keep his pride in himself and to keep from having his family look down on him because of his inability to provide for his family.

There was not a valid reason for Willie to kill himself. He was about to pay his last mortgage payment on his house and his two sons were set on making their own business, Willie did not realize that he had everything to live for. Though he had just lost his job, I offered him a position at my place. He declined my generosity because he feared admitting his inability to provide for his family. I think Willie saw this as his only way to provide for his family because of his insurance policy that would be paid after his death to the family. It is an utter tragedy that Willie felt that this was the only way he could provide for his family.

Othello

Othello is portrayed as a passionate and noble hero. He is represented as of honest character and holds a high rank as general in the Venician Army. Although Othello is depicted as a great man, he is also treated as an outsider because of the fact that he is a Moor. The union between Othello and Desdemona is not rendered as wrong to the audience, but shown as being torn apart by the Elizabethan society in 1604. For Shakespeare to give Othello such characteristics, put him at such a high position, and at the same time show how differently he is treated because of the color of his skin, Shakespeare writes a play about racism--not a racist play.

Brabantio and Othello had a good relationship until Iago got between them informing Brabantio of the marriage between Othello and Brabantio's daughter, Desdemona. "Even now, very now, and old black ram is tupping your white ewe. Arise, arise Awake the snorting citizens with the bell, or else the devil will make a grandsire of you," this was Iago's first attempt to turn Brabantio against Othello (I, i, 88-1). Brabantio is the father of Desdemona, and also the one who appointed Othello as general. When referring to Othello as the General of the Venician Army Brabantio has great respect for Othello. When it comes to the marriage between Desdemona and Othello Brabantio refers to it as "against all rules of nature," yet before Brabantio found out about the marriage Othello tells the Senate about how Brabantio "…lov'd me, oft invited me; still question'd me the story of my life," (I, iii, 101-1). This shows that Othello's race was not an issue before the marriage, Othello tells the Senate he was often invited to Brabantio's house and there was respect between them.

There is hatred towards Othello from Brabantio because of the marriage that takes place between Desdemona and Othello behind his back. Othello, being a Moor comes out as a big issue, but the fact that Desdemona lied to her father is also a big part of the reason for the hatred Brabantio has towards Othello. Brabantio admits "if she confess that she was half the wooer, destruction on my head, if my bad blame light on the man," (I, iii, 175-176). He finds it unbelievable that Desdemona fell in love with Othello on her own, or was part of the courtship. Brabantio even accused Othello of using magic spells or tricks on Desdemona stating that, "she is abused, stol'n from me, and corrupted by spells and medicines bought of mountebanks; for nature so preposterously to err, being not deficient, blind, or lame of sense, sans witchcraft could not, (I, iii, 60-64).

This play has many racist comments coming from its main characters, but the comments are not made because of the color of Othello's skin, they are made only as a way to attack Othello for other reasons. The characters do not actually have something against Othello because he is a Moor; they have hatred towards Othello for other reasons, and use the color of his skin to strike against him. Iago comes across as the most racist character in the entire play, not only does he act racist towards Othello, but he tries to get the other characters to turn against Othello as well. Iago makes several racist remarks about Othello, but he makes these remarks behind his back because he doesn't Othello to know, since he is in a higher position than him. He doesn't have hatred towards Othello because he is black; his hatred is because Othello didn't give him the promotion that Iago believes he deserved and because he suspects that Othello slept with his wife. Othello chose Cassio, who has no experience in the army, to be his lieutenant. Another character that makes some racist comments is Roderigo, but he also does not carry his hatred towards Othello because of his skin color, but mainly because Desdemona is married to someone else, when he had asked for her hand. Emilia also makes a racist remark, saying "O, the more angel she, and you the black devil," but this is the only time during the play that she comments on his color, and this is out of anger, right after Othello kills Desdemona (V, i, 10-11).

Cheap College Papers on othello

Shakespeare does not use Othello's race to portray black people of lesser value. In fact, the Duke even says to Senator Brabantio, "Your son-in-law is far more fair than black," showing that Othello's positive characteristics are far more important than his skin color (I, iii, 87). Othello may be a minority, but he holds a high place in society. By Othello being black he is more obviously shown as an outsider, without this element the play would lose most of its meaning and value. The outsider quality explains some of his insecurities, which cause his jealous behavior and lead to his downfall. Iago put suspicions in his head about Desdemona having an affair, and Othello's already showed that he doubted that Desdemona truly loved him.

This play deals with love, jealousy, and racism. It is not written to make blacks look bad, but fixes on the complications that they must deals with, especially so long ago in an Elizabethan society. Shakespeare shows Othello and Desdemona's love being torn apart by outside sources. The marriage is not depicted as wrong to the audience, but shows that the relationship had to forgo the racist community that surrounded it. Othello is already presented as an outsider because of his color, and by other characters, trying to break apart the relationship for one reason or the other, fixing on his insecurities it all builds up to cause the tragic ending that takes place.

Dear Keith,

I hope you are enjoying your retreat, and working hard to understand and apply the experiences and knowledge that others are trying to pass on to you. I believe this experience can be very beneficial in helping you to understand others and yourself.

It is interesting to see you beginning to develop your own independent opinions about subjects and learning to express them. You will find that it is important to listen to the opinions of others in helping you to formulate your own thoughts. Hopefully during this retreat process you can learn to more fully develop in this area.

You have certainly grown up since when we first came together. It probably seems that maybe I have always been pushing you in a particular direction. This is of course a parents primary responsibility, to try and provide you with moral guidance. I have learned through my own life experiences that when things go wrong in a persons life it is because they often times lacked a moral compass to help them make the right decisions. This is your foundation and it must guide you and you must rely on it when faced with difficult decisions.

Order custom research paper on retraet letter

I have seen you successfully apply these principles in your life, when your friends and others in similar positions have failed. You should be proud of the fact that you have a solid foundation from which to guide you in your decision making. I believe this is the greatest asset a young person can possess. I hope you understand that one thing that the people that know you say is that you are a good person. This is an attribute you should continue to maintain as it can be lost if you don't continue to work at it.

I think that you are now doing a fine job of applying yourself to school. At this time in your life this needs to be your first priority as it sets the pace for your future. While it may seem mundane and boring developing the study skills in high school makes applying them in collage and work so much easier. The first quarter you took the easy way and chose not to exert the effort to succeed. The second quarter you were able to over come this poor start to obtain a positive semester. You have had this characteristic periodically through out your life, as do many people. Maybe you enjoy the challenge of over coming adversity, but it certainly causes a lot of unneeded stress in your life and in the lives of the people that care about you. If there were one suggestion I have on how to improve yourself this would be it.

You certainly have been working in a positive way to become more independent. I look forward to your continued development in this area. I hope that you can get a summer job you will enjoy and work hard at it, I know you always will approach this type of work with a positive attitude.

I appreciate your love and loyalty to your family members, I know that we can always count on you in this regard

Love,

The March to Washington

The March to Washington in 16 was the first time both whites and blacks participated together to fight for blacks' civil rights. 50,000 people came and over 60,000 of them were Caucasian. The March ended at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Many singers such as Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Mahalia Jackson sang at the march to demonstrate their support. 75-100 U.S. Senators and House Representatives made appearances at the march, showing that not all politicians were racist or against the Civil Rights movement. A. Philip Randolph opened up the program with a moving speech, stating the intentions of the march, nonviolent in order to start a "massive moral revolution for jobs and freedom." Speaker John Lewis' speech created a large impact on the crowd. Although originally planned to be harsher and more extreme, Lewis changed his speech at the insistence of Martin Luther King Jr., James Forman and Courtland Cox. In his revised speech, he declared that they should "splinter the South into a thousand pieces and put them back together in the image of God and Democracy." Martin Luther King Jr. spoke that day, presenting his famous "I Have a Dream" speech. He praised the day's success at racial harmony, affection amongst mankind, and asserted his beliefs that blacks and whites could coexist peacefully. Over 1,000 soldiers were present at the march to handle any riots or violent acts, but the day went off successfully without any uprisings. The March to Washington was a success in advancing the Civil Rights Movement.

A civilization is a complicated form of one particular culture, characterized by certain traits. The traits include growth of cities; which can also be described as population increases, specialized workers (craft persons), writing (originally cuneiform), advanced technology (trying to improve ways of life), and institutions. Institutions, long lasting patterns of organization, include government, religion, education, and family. Government sets instructions for the ways life. It includes laws and punishments for crimes committed. Religion is having belief in a higher power(s) or supreme being(s). Education is the way we learn throughout life. Family is a combination of the three in smaller units, the reign of the government usually the eldest male in the group.

The main word that proves how important government is, is anarchy. Government's role in any kingdom is to prevent this destructive concept. The laws in civilization prevent this total chaos from occurring. Some of the laws that governments have formed have been around throughout history. Government shapes the whole of any empire. There are some places with laws to prevent citizens from killing each other. None of the other parts of institutions could exist without the laws to protect the people. Specialized workers would not be available to civilizations if they were constantly being killed. You simply cannot be educated if there is no way to run the education systems. Families cannot live within the walls of any city if they do not have ways to protect themselves from hateful crimes. Religions cannot be carried out if the temples, churches, and synagogues can be destroyed at any time with no punishment. A civilization could not come about without the people to make, run, or live in it. Governments can control the advanced technology that is mandatory for keeping up with the times. Without some sort of backbone, government, civilizations would crumble. Throughout history it has been proven that without government, civilizations cannot last very long. The structure of government sets a plan for ways of life for the citizens in that kingdom.

Buy cheap Insitutions/Government term paper

Clearly, government is the most important part of institutions. A civilization cannot be created without government. Even so, a civilization could not survive with no one to run it. Though the other parts of institutions are quite important, they do not rank as high as government in importance to a civilization. If at any time there were a cease in government, the civilization could not stand on its own for very long. Any of the other institutions could be out on hold for a much longer length of time and the civilization would stay alive. Without government, a civilization could never come about or exist.

Frankenstein focuses on the effect of one mans optimistic motives and the wanting to experiment with nature, which results in the formation of a horrific monster. Victor Frankenstein was not doomed to fail from his original desire to overstep the limits of human knowledge. It was his poor parenting of his monster that led to his creations desire to vindicate his unjust and unfair life. Victor was blinded by his idealism, and his creation accuses him for bringing him into a world where the people who occupy it could never entirely accept him. Not only failing to foresee his faulty optimism, nearing the end of the tale, he sets out on a final journey, intentionally choosing to pursue his creation for revenge, while admitting to himself that it may result in his own downfall. The creation of a detested being holds Victor more accountable for his own death than the monster.

Brought into a world, full-grown and without a parent to teach him how to live in the human world, the fiend discovers that he is alone, but not without a way to survive. He attempts to talk to his creator, but he is incapable of speech. Frankenstein recounts the situation by saying, "I beheld the wretch---the miserable monster whom I had created. He held up the curtain of the bed; and his eyes, if eyes they may be called, were fixed on me. His jaw opened, and he muttered some inarticulate sounds, while a grin wrinkled his cheeks. He might have spoken, but I did not hear; one hand was stretched out, seemingly to detain me, but I escaped and rushed downstairs"(p. 4).

As Frankenstein tells it, he says that he deliberately doesn't communicate with his creation, based on its gruesome appearance. Had Frankenstein taken the time to speak to and care for his creation, the creation would have never developed the sense of revenge and hurt that led him to murdering many of the members of Victors family. The creation would from now on blame Frankenstein for all his sufferings following his birth. From some of his very first words, Victor claims to have been born to two greatly affectionate parents. As he speaks of his parents, Frankenstein portrays his very privileged upbringing, "Much as they were attached to each other, they seemed to draw inexhaustible stores of affection from a very mine of love to bestow them upon me. My mothers tender caresses and my fathers smile of benevolent pleasure while regarding me are my first recollections. I was their plaything and their idol, and something better---their child, the innocent and helpless creature bestowed on them by heaven, whom to bring up to good, and whose future lot it was in their hands to direct to happiness or misery, according as they fulfilled their duties towards me" (p. 1).

By these recollections, Frankenstein illustrates his parents as being the most ideal caregivers imaginable to any child, being granted all the vital tools of a responsible guardian as a result, which he neglects to utilize upon animating his creation. Frankenstein abandons his hideous child, feelings of vindication arise, and the creation kills members of his family for all the mental anguish that has been set upon him.

Frankensteins intent was to create a being unlike any other, superior to all human life and so he picked the most perfect body parts and beauteous features, all to be pieced together in great anticipation. However, the results are horrific and irreversible. Accusing Frankenstein of bringing him into a world where he could never be accepted, the creation realizes his creators faulty idealism. However, Frankenstein is unable to detect his idealistic blindness.

In the creations loathsome words, he merely justifies that had Frankenstein not have been passionately immersed in the creation of a superior being, gigantic and repulsive as a result, all his sufferings would cease to exist.

Longing for the attention that Frankenstein neglects to provide him with at his birth, the creation attempts to gain it by stalking and killing his loved ones. The creation does finally attain this attention as Frankenstein feels that he no longer has any reason to live but to seek revenge upon the being that has ultimately destroyed him. Upon hearing Frankensteins declarations of reprisal, the creation is delighted in finally receiving the attention that Victor neglected to provide to him at his birth.

Frankenstein starts the fight that would in the end lead him to his doom. Frankenstein seeks vengeance upon his creature. Frankenstein swears that he will undertake the task to pursue his creation and eradicate him from this world. Although he may be enraged with revenge and uncontrolled anger, Frankenstein does admit that his pursuit may result in his own demise.

Frankenstein is the tale of a man doomed to failure and death because of his desire to play with nature. By creating a vicious being, that he cannot control, Frankenstein brings about his own death. Frankenstein neglects to take responsibility for his creation, abandoning him, resulting in the murder of his loved ones as the creations revenge. In his idealism, Frankenstein is blinded and is unable to anticipate the drastic effects of giving life to a being that could never be accepted by human society. Consciously choosing to pursue his creation in vengeance, Frankensteins sufferings are finally eradicated, for he was very well aware that it might have led to his ultimate end. The creation of an unloved being and seeking out the death of the creature hold Victor Frankenstein more responsible for his own demise than the creation that killed him.

Definition of Human Resources Management

" Human Resource Management involves all management decisions and actions that affect the relationship between the organization and employees- its human resources" described by Beer et al (184).

"Human Resource Management relates to the total set of knowledge, skills and attitudes that firms need to compete. It involves concerns for action in the management of people, including selection, training and development, employee relations and compensation." given by Pettigrew and Whipp (11).

Bratton and Gold (14) define HRM as -

The part of the management process that specialises in the management of people in work organisations. HRM emphasises that employees are the primary resource for gaining sustainable competitive advantage, that human resource activities need to be integrated with the corporate strategy, and that human resource specialists help organisational controllers to meet both efficiency and equity objectives.

Training makes a vital contribution to the development of the organisation's human resources and hence to the achievements of its aims and objectives. Training must be given to the right people in the right form at the right time and at the right costs.

The Insurance Company is a Learning Organisation, where most of the market is depended on the customer services. A Learning Organisation has been defined by Pedlar et al (18) as 'An Organisation, which facilitates the learning of all its members and continually transforms itself'. Handy(18) describes a Learning Organisation as one that both learns and encourages learning in people.

An employee gave a customer less claim amount in Insurance Company. The employee was not having sufficient knowledge of the policy and the customer lost few hundred pounds. Line managers have the main responsibility to train their staff at work.

Union Carbide is a company, which is responsible for the disaster taken place in Bhopal (India) on rd December 184. The disaster was caused due to the leakage of MIC gas when water or some other agent accidentally entered the tank, killing approximately 500 people on the spot. This was caused because most of the employees were untrained. Most of the employees were not professionals and they are not aware of the technology used by the Union Carbide Company.

Line managers have main responsibilities to train there at the work place.

Showing discrimination harasses most of the employees in an organisation

Discrimination

The term discrimination describes a large number o wrongful acts in employment, housing, education, medical care and other areas of public life .

The forms of discrimination are

Discrimination en sex

Religious discrimination

National origin discrimination

Age discrimination

Discrimination against the handicapped

Discrimination occurs when there is an express intent to threat the weakness of certain groups differently.

Most of the discrimination in the organisation is shown at the time of employment and at the promotion.

The sex discrimination act and the race relations act

The sex discrimination act (SDA) and the race relations act (RRA) address unfair discrimination I similar ways. Both refer to three kinds of discrimination

Direct discrimination

Indirect discrimination

Victimisation

Direct discrimination occurs when someone is treated les favourably for a reason directly to with his or her sex, marital status, race, racial origin. Examples of this would be to refuse a woman a job as a truck driver simply because she is a woman or to refuse a Chinese person a job in a school kitchen simply because all another employees are white European, and the employer fears that a person of different racial background will not fit in.

Indirect discrimination occurs when someone was treated unfairly because of some requirement that would disproportionately exclude the particular group that person belongs to, and when the requirement cannot be objectively justified. fro instance if u wish to hire someone to clean the windows in a building and you stipulated that applicants must be six feet tall could this requirement be justified interms of the skills and abilities required to do the job..

Victimisation occurs when someone is treated less favourably because that person had made a complaint and indicated an intension to make a complaint about sex or race discrimination.

The prejudice involved in discrimination is of several different kinds. One kind of prejudice behind racial and ethnic discrimination consists of strong feeling of antipathy and intolerance. Some prejudice is based not on strong feelings but on misunderstandings such as stereo typed about women, older workers, and handicapped.

Improper sexual conduct in the workplace-which includes lewd and suggestive comments, touching and fondling, persistent attention, and requests for sexual favours- has long been problem for women, and occasionally for men. In 180, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), issued guidelines on sexual harassment that include the following definition "Unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favours, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature constitute sexual harassment when (1) submission t such conduct is made either explicitly or implicitly a term or condition of an individual's employment, () submission to or rejection of such conduct by an individual is used as the basis for employment decisions affecting such individual, or () such conduct has the purpose or effect of un reasonably interfering with an individual's work performance or creating an intimidating , hostile, or offensive working environment."

This definition makes a distinction between two kinds of harassment. One is quid pro quo harassment, which clearly violates that man, and women should not be treated differently in their "compensation, terms, conditions, or privileges of employment." A woman who is promised a promotion or a raiseor threatened with demotion, termination, or loss of pay-based on whether she submits to the sexual demands of her boss is being held to a different standard, merely because of her sex. The other kind is hostile working environment harassment, in which the sexual nature of the conduct of co-workers and others causes a woman to be very uncomfortable.

The corporation has recognised the cost of harassment and accepted their responsibility to prevent it by establishing programs to deal with harassment on the job. The main features of these programs are (1) developing a firm policy against harassment; () communicating this policy to all employees and providing training, where necessary, to secure compliance; () setting up a procedure for reporting violations and investigating all complaints thoroughly and fairly; and (4) taking appropriate action against the offenders.
