Adolescence is often referred to as the awkward years or the in between years since this process occurs as children transition to adulthood and can be somewhat turbulent. In American culture adolescence covers a period of approximately 10 years from about age to age 18. Within this time period, adolescents are affected by various developmental transformations including physical, emotional, and social changes (Newman, B & Newman, P). Due to the vast changes that occur during this period, experts divide the stages of adolescence into 4 stages pre-adolescence (ages to 1 years), early adolescence (ages 1 to 14 years), middle adolescence (ages 15 to 16 years), and late adolescence (ages 16 to 18 years).
Pre-adolescence
Pre-adolescence occurs around nine and continues to approximately age twelve.
