Adolescence is often referred to as the awkward years or the in between years since this process occurs as children transition to adulthood and can be somewhat turbulent. This the period of time when children go through many physical changes as well as changes involving their sexual, psychological, and social states. Someone in the midst of adolescence may describe the process as confusing, or always changing, and even exciting (Lauton, B. & Freese, A. 181).


Adolescence begins with puberty and concludes with adulthood. It is impossible to specify the exact age since maturation varies amongst all children as they grew and mature at different rates (Lauton, B. & Freese, A. 181). In American culture adolescence covers a period of approximately 10 years from about age to age 18. Within this time period, adolescents are affected by various developmental transformations including physical, emotional, and social changes (Newman, B & Newman, P). Due to the vast changes that occur during this period, experts divide the stages of adolescence into 4 stages pre-adolescence (ages to 1 years), early adolescence (ages 1 to 14 years), middle adolescence (ages 15 to 16 years), and late adolescence (ages 16 to 18 years).


Pre-adolescence


Pre-adolescence occurs around nine and continues to approximately age twelve. During this age group, physical growth and development will vary among youth as children grow and develop at different rates. The pre-adolescent is beginning to experience the effects of puberty, which tends to bring emotional changes in addition to their new physical changes. Early Adolescence

This young adolescent experiences life as a roller coaster. They may experience an array of feelings at any given moment such as happy, sad, anxious, and confused. Middle Adolescence


Middle adolescence occurs between fifteen and sixteen years of age. At this time, the teenager has transitioned from middle school to high school. Physical appearances and attractiveness are still major concerns among this age group as they may have feelings of strangeness with their new developments. Late Adolescence


The end of the teen years brings stability to a number of areas. Late adolescence encompasses ages sixteen to age eighteen. Physical appearance is a diminished concern, however, efforts to improve look will continue. Peers have less of an influence at this stage and teens may even turn back to the parents for guidance. However, the late adolescent has the ability to make independent decisions and the ability to think through ideas on their own. Late adolescents have an enhanced ability to express ideas in words and they tend to have a more developed sense of humor. The late adolescent has a firmer sense of his or her own identity and they no longer struggling for independence as they were during the other stages. Late adolescents have greater concern for others and have become more self-reliant. Late adolescents have a higher level of concern for the future and have deep thoughts about one's role in life. Identity Achievement

These young teens want to have the overall say in their lives; they want to make their own choices such as picking their own friends or planning their own activities. Sarter and James (00) found parental involvement to be a crucial link to identity development during early adolescence. Specifically, those parents who were aware of their child's grades, activities, and friends and who also provided encouragement and support that was evident to the adolescent provided this young teen with a sense of security as they developed their identities. Furthermore, the child's process of individuation became more defined as there was cooperation from the parent to allow the child to be assertive, meanwhile the parent granted independence while both maintained to stay connected with one another (Sarter, C. & James, Y. 00). Similarly, Baumrind (178) demonstrated that children whose parents who were warm and firm showed higher levels of competence (Steinberg, L. & Morris, A. 001).
