In his essay "An image of Africa Racism in Conrads Heart of Darkness" Chinua Achebe says that Heart of Darkness is a "novel which celebrates the dehumanization of Africa and Africans; which depersonalizes a portion of the human race we cannot call it a work of art." I do not agree with this idea because I don't think any work of art should be judged in moral terms. I think that if we judge a novel in moral terms would be like trying to judge a criminal using laws such as the gravity law. The aim of this paper is not to defend Conrads racist ideas, which undoubtedly appear in the novel. They appear in some passages; the novel indeed contains contemptuous descriptions of black people. Not only that, black people in the novel most of the times are simply reduced to "limbs", "bundles", "black shapes crouching", " a mass of hands clapping", etc. Here is an example of one these descriptions

"Near the same tree two more bundles of acute angles sat with their legs drawn up. One, with his chin propped on his knees , stared at nothing, in an intolerable and appalling manner his brother phantom rested its forehead, as if overcome with great weariness; and all about others were scattered in every pose of contorted collapse, as in some picture of a massacre or a pestilence. While I stood horror-struck, one of these creature rose to his hands and knees, and went off on all-fours towards the river to drink."

First of all, these sick people are described merely as "bundles" and secondly Marlows reaction is of horror. The scene is coldly described as "a picture of a massacre". Well, we see that kind of pictures very often in the newspaper, however the reactions we may have in seeing these kind of images are very different; Marlows reaction is of repulsion. In the following passage Marlow, unwilling to behold the scene any longer, leaves towards one of the stations along the river. There he encounters a "white man" who is described quite different (one may well imagine how). One of the most degrading descriptions of a black person made in the novel is to be found in the third chapter when Marlow, sailing up-river, describes a black guy who was a part of the crue

"And between whiles I had to look after the savage who was a fireman. He was an improved specimen; he could fire up a vertical boiler. He was there below me and, upon my word, to look at him was as edifying as seeing a dog in a parody of breeches and a feather hat walking on his hind legs. A few months of training had done for that really fine chap."

Custom Essays on "Heart of Darkness: a moral and aesthetic issue"

We do not think any further comment is needed here. This manner of describing a human being should not be thought as correct never. It is so full of disdain and discrimination that we should be ashamed of ourselves if we though it somehow funny.

The ideas behind these descriptions are the ones we condemn because they are founded on mistaken conceptions not only about black people but about mankind. Nevertheless, a work of art should not be at any time subjected to judgements such as the following "This novel can not be called a work of art since it celebrates the dehumanization of Africa and Africans." Achebe acknowledges that Heart of Darkness is a novel. There are different sorts of novels cheap novels and good novels. For scholars novels such as Heart of Darkness have always been good novels in the sense that they are works of art. Throughout many years Heart of Darkness has been studied in universities, and has been the starting point of many critical works. Why ? It is simply because it is beautiful and it holds aesthetic values. What makes something beautiful? The expression "sin inters alguno" means that when reading a novel, or listening to a music piece or contemplating a painting, we must not let our prejudices and ideas to interrupt and interfere with our first acquaintance with the work of art in turn. We must stay passive. The perception must be flawless. Our "gusto" must be the only judge to determine whether a novel is beautiful or not; if it is ,but it also displays ,like in this case, ideas which might be wrong or ideas we do not agree with, we have to make a distinction between the aesthetic values it holds merely for the sake of it being a work of art and the ideas , racist ideas in this case, displayed in the work of art. The latter must not influence the former and vice versa.

Achebe says that Conrad "…while pretending to record scenes, incidents and their impact is in reality engaged in inducing hypnotic stupor in his readers through a bombardment of emotive words and other forms of trickery much more has to be at stake than stylistic felicity". I think this is going too far. Achebes mistake is to justify a statement like the previous one on the argument that Conrad , who being racist, only wanted to hypnotize his readers so they could not be aware of his racism; furthermore how on earth Achebe could know Conrads intentions when he was writing Heart of Darkness? This is to let our ideas, which may find their raison dtre in the novel, to misguide the judgement we may reach. As Ive already said this is to judge with inadequate tools. The style of the novel must be judged in terms of style , and not in terms of Chinuas Achebes ideas concerning racism in the novel; Im not saying those ideas are futile , but they should only be used only in a different kind of analysis of the novel, social criticism in the novel for example.

On the other hand , we shall not dismiss the underlying implications of Conrads racism in the novel. Casting off the racist ideas in the novel merely because what we are reading is beautiful, is not only an unwise but stupid "reading" of the novel. Thus , when reading novels which require from us not only the passivity of our "gusto" and perception , but also a critical eye on subjects ,such as racism, that deal with some of the problems of our society. Also, we must not allow ourselves to judge the aesthetic values of the novel in terms of , for example in this case , social criticism, and vice versa; we cannot justify ideas ,such as Conrads ,regarding one of the major problems during I do not know how many centuries, namely, equality between black and white men.

Im quoting here a passage that could be well considered from the aesthetic point of view

" The reach was narrow, straight, with high sides like a railway cutting. The dusk came gliding into it long before ths sun had set. The current ran smooth and swift, but a dumb immobility sat on the banks. The living trees, lashed together by the creepers and every living bush of the undergrowth, might have been changed into stone, even to the slenderest twig, to the lightest leaf. It was not sleep- it seemed unnatural, like a state of trance. Not the faintest sound of any kind could be heard. You looked on amazed, and began to suspect yourself of being deaf then the night came suddenly, and struck you blind as well.

As Keats poem says "Beauty is truth, truth beauty,- that is all

Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know".

Of the other kind, of those which involve racism Ive already quoted enough.

There was a storm and it was wild night. His father was dead an his mother had only Peggoty, her loyal servant. The mother was having baby and she was feeling ill. That's when David Copperfield was born. The years went past and soon he was six, but still young to understand many things like her mother new marriage with Mr. Murdstone, he and David didn't like each other, that man treated him so bad. He was sent to a school by this man far from there. In this place he met Steerfoth and Tradles his new friends. But one day the director told him that his mother and his little new brother were dead, so Mr. Murdstone decided to send David with a officer in other place of England to work with him and he would have to pay to eat. He met many people there, like Mr. Wickfield and his daughter Agnes, because of him Copperfield wanted to be a lawyer. But at that time he was so poor. So decided to look for his aunt. She helped and invited him to live in her house. The time went past and he was almost a man, he met again with Steerforth his best friend, they went to Mr. Peggoty's house where there was Emily a friend of childhood and she was in love of Steerforth, but someday Emily escaped with Steerforth and nobody knew about them. David continued meeting people of the past, most of them asking him for help or advices because most of those people were having trouble with money like Mr. Wickfield, Agnes father, he lost all his money because a bad guy.

One day, he met a beautiful lady, her name was Dora, he just fell in love at the first sight, so after time, he asked her to marry him but like always, the problem was that he wasn't a gentleman, he didn't has money, and that scared her, because she was a lady. Her father didn't like that relationship but he couldn't do anything to avoid it, because he died. But after time, David and Dora got married, they love each other so much, David did everything to give Dora what she deserved as a lady, but Dora wasn't so clever at home, she was like a child, she couldn't be a good wife, and besides everything he kept loving her. One day Dora wake up very ill and she died. Emily returned with Mr. Peggoty, but Steerforth was missing… In Yarmouth the climate was bad, then a ship was in trouble and many of the crew were dieing because of the sea and the storm, David was watching that form the shore, then someone saw a bodey, it was Steerforth's body, he was dead. David was so depressed about all his dead friends that he left England. The only person he had contact with, was with Agnes, he thought that he just love her like brother and sister, but that wasn't true, when he realized of this, he returned to England and look for her to marry her. He found her and obviously she was in love too. They got married and had five children. He finally found happiness with Agnes.

Reflection

I like this book because most of the situations that happened, happen in real life. What I'm trying to say is that it's like normal life, and what we have to achieve whatever we want in life.

Order Custom David Copperfield paper

For example Something that I noticed on this book was the importance that people gave to money, everyone's life changed because of money, everyone was looking for money, money was the main cause of their problems or the main solution for them. Nowadays the money keeps being all these , people is always taking care about money, and like in the book, they just were happy if they had money then if they have someone to love, is the same as now.

Before reading this book I didn't think so much about money in general, obviously I knew all these stuff, but it's different if you think that even if you don't want to give money that big importance, it really has it, we are living in a material world, where money is necessary, indispensable to live and also gives happiness, it isn't all in life, we can be happy without it if we really want to 'cause happiness depends on us, but sometimes it's hard to feel it without a economic stability.

Also, I think that this book shows a little bit the fight for goals and fight to find happiness, to don't give up just because of some troubles, life is short and we have to enjoy it and keep going ahead like David Copperfield did, he passed on big difficulties since he was born, but he didn't give up and take a easy way out, he continued living and going ahead. That's what I think is important form this book..

Q1 The focus of what we consider modern terrorism has changed dynamically in just thirty years. Though exceptions always apply, there has been a general trend from left-wing domestic groups toward right-wing international groups as the prevalent form of terrorism. This transformation is further characterized by a movement from the secular to the radical, the domestic to the international , and from partial sympathy to outright denunciation by Western society. Key moments in history have also shaped these changes, though by no means singularly defined them. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan sparked a radical change in the Sunni Muslims as a Soviet defeat at the hands of heretofore disorganized groups seemed to prove the supremacy of their faith against an infidel world power. The Islamic revolution in Iran showed the world the greater threat to be encountered from non pan-Arab nations that advocate an anti-Western and pan-Islamic message. Furthermore, the Soviet Unions disintegration sparked a resurgence of Islam in its former satellite states that soon produced radical offshoots, as the populations had been denied the right to embrace their culture for decades; this disintegration also had the opposite effect on terrorist movements that espoused a type of Maoist/Marxist/Leninist philosophy. And, there has been a confluence of terrorist activity in the Middle East while a calmer period has begun in the Western world. Now we must look at the particulars. By briefly discussing five specific groups we can gain a sense of this evolution.

Sendero Luminoso (SL) exemplified a left-wing domestic and secular organization that advocated a Maoist/Marxist approach and philosophy as well as a radical indigenismo that defined its purely domestic goals. Furthermore, it was in existence, like many left-wing movements of the time (it began in 180) in a relatively open and diverse, albeit flawed and inadequate, democratic society. SL had the support of a poor geographically isolated native peasantry that had long felt disenfranchised, and unable to achieve economic stability, by a racist elite located in the center and which controlled a majority of power and wealth. Emblematic of left wing movements, the leadership was predominately composed of middle class, highly educated intellectuals. With a focus on education as a means of social mobility, SL sought an overthrow of the government and implementation of a peasant based republic forged through revolution. As such, it was a political sectarian movement using political means to achieve political goals, with the resort to force when necessary. SL promised a world where truth without deceit is supreme. SL serves as an excellent representation of a terrorist organization that is no longer the pervading threat today as its philosophical goals have lost a degree of legitimacy, especially since the demise of the Soviet Union.

The most prevalent form of right-wing terrorism which emerged throughout the 80s and 0s is seen through radical Islamic groups, though right-wing terrorism exists in many other forms as well as outside the Middle East. Hamas, founded in 187 when the first Intifada began, is a modern domestic entity. Its radicalization was due to the terrible social and economic conditions in Gaza, and a perception that the PLO, which advocates a secular Palestinian state as opposed to the profoundly religious Hamas, was incapable of achieving their goals. Hamas utilizes radical tactics such as suicide bombers in part due to its belief in the concept of martyrdom. Those who volunteer for such missions are almost exclusively deeply religious, of modest intelligence, and from families with little or no economic means or social status, not an uncommon combination currently.

Hizbbullah, also born in the 180s, is an example of the state sponsored radical Islamic variety as it operates predominantly out of Lebanon and receives its greatest support from the fundamentalist Iranian state that emerged after 17. State sponsorship has given terrorist movements the Entirely Shiite, there existed a spirit of resentment and feelings of discrimination among members. Vehemently and ideologically anti-Western, they turned their attention to Israel when it invaded Lebanon in 18. We are not fighting so that the enemy recognizes us and offers us something. We are fighting to wipe out the enemy. Another practitioner of radical terrorist tactics, like Hamas, Hizbullah is also extremely politically active, operates in a region where little legitimate authority is present, and provides some social services to its followers. It is the perfect example of a modern group that is not willing to seek any compromise or recognize the legitimacy of its enemy in the pursuit of its goals.

Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades is a new entity that emerged from Arafats Fatah movement with the latest Intifada. Unlike Hamas, its emergence from Fatah and its associations with the PLO indicates a non-Islamist philosophy, though it does utilize suicide bombers as one of its tactics. The group appears to be a dichotomy in many ways though. It displays elements of secularism and official state support (if one could consider the PLO as such), yet concomitantly uses Islam to arouse support for its fight for an independent Palestine. It is a local Palestinian phenomenon, although they do draw ideological inspiration from Hezbollah.

The modern and most deadly threat, however, is the revolutionary Al-Qaeda, which comes as the final evolution to date of modern terrorism. Al-Qaeda is the epitome of the global terrorist threat. Categorically fundamentalist, unconditionally anti-Western, positively radicalized, it is a global network that operates out of several countries, has cells throughout innumerable others, and threatens both Western society, and the Middle East, for what it deems the betrayal of traditional Islam. It can exist without state support. Al-Qaeda has also shown a willingness to place no restrictions on the tactics that it is willing to use and so it constitutes a possibly nuclear, chemical, or biological threat.

Religion-inspired terrorism is less intellectually motivated and has displaced much of the politically oriented goals of the past with its resurgence today. This is not to say that radical groups such as Hamas and Al-Qaeda do not have clearly defined political goals, but rather that their inspiration derives more from religious obligation today, and abuse of that religion, than the political aims of the past; a movement from pan-Arabism to radical Islam in the Middle East. This type of terrorism is exemplified by such anomalies as the suicide bomber and the concept of martyrdom. Todays terrorist is predominantly Middle Eastern, reflects the trends in the Muslim and Arab world, often rejects the entire western world as illegitimate, and pursues its irrational goals irrationally. This systematic march from secularism to radical religious movements often seeks destruction of a society, rather than concessions from it, as their supreme religious duty.

Q The nature of the current terrorist threat is the concept of global terrorism in the form of radical Islamic groups. And, Al-Qaeda is the central and most dangerous archetype due to its modern economic, technological and, most especially, its unifying qualities in light of the continuing evolution of Arab resentment toward western society. Unlike previous threats to our country, Al-Qaeda is unique; while more organized it is not at all localized, both in the range of its terrorist attacks as well as the location and nationalities of its members. As a global network and presently the definitive modern global terrorist organization, it preaches and draws a highly radical, extremely religious following, to which it then further radicalizes. Its ranks include Palestinians, Yemenis, Sudanese, East Asians, Syrians, Saudis, et al. And, Osama Bin Laden has served as a unifying force between groups that traditionally have little in common with each other. Al-Qaeda operates in an incredible number of countries and even cities in the U.S., to say nothing about the number of countries where its members may simply reside as sleeper cells, or countries such as the Phillipines where it has supported indigenous terrorist groups. The members Al-Qaeda are also world travelers, technically proficient and extremely well funded, as seen by looking at the intricacies of September 11.

Furthermore, Al-Qaedas numbers and training are unlike the state supported groups that have threatened us in the past. Al-Qaeda does not require state support in order to give the organization the necessary training and weapons to be an effective terrorist organization, as is the case with a group such as Hizbullah. While Al-Qaeda did receive support from the Taliban in the form of territory to train its recruits, and a symbiotic relationship did develop, Al-Qaeda was not dependent upon the Taliban, or any other state, for its existence. Rather, due to Bin Ladens origins, the group was founded and embarked on its mission in 18 with the only financial support it required coming from Bin Laden himself. Bin Laden facilitated the construction and operation of numerous bases that specialized in training recruits in paramilitary tactics. As such, it became in many ways an amorphous rogue state; members of the group even received salaries

They seek weapons of mass destruction.

Al-Qaedas goals are also exceedingly broader in comparison to the terrorist threats the U.S. has faced in the past. Unlike previous terrorist threats, Al-Qaeda looks at the big picture. They see the West, led by America, inexorably seeking the total domination of the Muslim world. Although extraordinarily political, its drive is an ever growing radicalized Islamic zeal that was not a predominant focus of most terrorist threats of the past. As Netanyahu recognizes, the days of the strictly pan-Arabism movements behind us. When the Marine barracks in Beirut were bombed in 18, we were witness to an attack motivated by resistance to a very specific U.S. policy in the region. Al-Qaedas list of grievances Al-Qaeda encompasses a much broader spectrum than previous terrorist threats.

As such, Bin Laden does not specifically incite the masses against our pornography, drugs or alcohol. He takes issue with all U.S. intervention in the Middle East, and specifically the presence of our military, support for Israel, campaign against Iraq, and our support for regimes such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia, which Bin Laden regards as having abandoned true Islam. (Bergen 7) Simply, this is a political and religious war, justified by his personal understanding of Islam, and directed at the symbols and institutions of American power. He has wholeheartedly embraced the most extreme reading of jihad, not only against the West, but also against every apostate regime in the Middle East (Bergen 41) This is not a personal attack on us due to our socioeconomic inequities that exist between us. This can be seen because the attackers are not poor Africans or Afghans, but members of the Egyptian and Saudi middle class (Bergen 7) Bergen thinks its nationalism more than a clash of civilizations that explains the current threat. () To support this, he makes note of the greatest catastrophes of recent years that were fought amongst similar ethnic groups of the same civilization (0). Still, bin Laden does support a war with the west (0) He is seen as a hero by a growing number of people who see his as a savior.

Todays terrorist threat in the form of Al-Qaeda is a highly organized entity that has succeeded in inciting the masses. The group draws from throughout the Arab world. It, and especially Osama Bin Laden, are the symbol of resistance to the West (5) It may not be an all out war of civilizations, but it represents the culmination of centuries of Arab resentment. Al-Qaeda is not for any one country and, despite its Afghan Taliban support, was never an Afghan entity. Rather, it inflames resentment that is 100s of years old but, for the first time, coherent and uniform. Is it ironic to think that the unifying ideals finally coming out of the Middle East, a region that saw the height of its civilization a millennia ago, are not those ideals of the enlightened but, rather, what can only be a continuing disintegration into the archaic primeval nightmares of historys injustice, the means of achieving it to be through terrorism?

Radical Islamism propagates because of the failure of the Arab governments to provide the potential for a prosperous future to their people. They are corrupt Kleptocracies with an over reliance on oil revenues. (5) Power is held by a relative few that are part of an inner circle. The result is a downward spiral of failure, fear and hatred. Islamism is attractive as it emerges naturally from the cultural fabric of Muslim countries as a so-called solution to all of societies problems, with more promise than pan-Arabism or socialism which defined previous decades. (5)

They want to return Islam to its most traditional form of the 7th century.

Question

Use Bergen, the Afterword.

Today we see a major resurgence of religious terrorism that is largely identified with trends in the Muslim and Arab world. (Lacqueur 17) were predominantly left wing while todays terrorism is mainly right-wing extremist or religious-nationalist. However, there is a problematic character of the political terms left and right. (Lacqueur 105) Left wing terrorism petered out with the downfall of the Soviet Union. It was more intellectual. U.S. right wing, the Turner Diaries. The right has more in common with bars and street corners. Lack of progress (islam), combined with the breakdown of secular ideologies such as Marxism and purely secular nationalism, has generated something akin to a

What has not changed is Arab resentment of the West. The means of expression, however, have been dynamic. Pan-Arab militant nationalism as a unifying force, especially with the defeat of Iraq in the Persian Gulf War, diminished in the face of militant Islam, which has as its obligation the waging of incessant unrelenting jihad against the West. (Netanyahu 88) The Pan-Arabist regimes of Libya and Iraq had been punished, but the flourishing culture of Islamic terrorism in Iran, Sudan, Lebanon, and Gaza had gone untouched for years.(8) And, these international terrorists have become domestic terrorists in a sense. This is because the U.S. has served as a safe haven for terrorists due to our liberal immigration and visitation laws (6). And, the terrorists are now American residents and citizens (7).

Islamic defiance of the supremacy of our non-Islamic western civilization. Confluence of our dominant western society, which happens to be predominantly Christian, with the beginning of the inevitable and final confluence of western civilization and in many ways an unenlightened culture that has not evolved and fear change. Domestic National-separatist movements of the 70s and 80s were going on throughout Europe.

State sponsored terrorism which allows for a proxy war of sorts allows the terrorist to have many of the advantages of a sovereign state, unlike the support given to domestic terrorists. (Netanyahu 5) Much of the international terrorism from 170 through the mid 180s was the product of an ad hoc alliance between the Soviet bloc and the dictatorial Arab regimes. (Netanyahu 5)

Militant Islam pursues irrational goals irrationally. (Netanyahu 16) It is therefore willing to put its ideology, unlike the Soviets, above their very existence. Today, there are more varieties than existed thirty years ago, and many are so different from those of the past and from each other that the term terrorism no longer fits some of them (Lacqueur 6) Most of the terrorism of 0 years ago was baguely left wing in inspiration, arguments were even made that terrorism was a response to injustice (Lacqueur )

The size of terrorist groups has moved from large to small (Lacqueur 4,5)

The type of globalization that took place in the 10s, especially the advent of the internet and massive telecommunications advances, have changed the world and it has changed the terrorists as well. needed the patronage of states to supply the money and infrastructure that allowed them to do business. (Bergen 40)

Set in the inner city of Bed-Stuy in urban New York, Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing explores the dilemmas that urban black communities undergo, exposes the fragile balance of the three distinct races the city sustains, and accentuates the interactions between these races.

Mookey, the main character of the movie played by Spike Lee himself, is a young black male trying to do the right thing by having a mere job at the local pizzeria as a delivery boy. The movie centers on his daily interactions within his community. Jade, his sister and backbone, is always trying to help him focus and take care of his responsibilities. Although he's an alcoholic elder and she sits on her window all day, Sister Mother and The Mayor are the watchful elder eyes of the community, giving advice to the youngsters and humor is intertwined in their daily interactions. Tina, Mookey's fussy Puerto Rican girlfriend, and mother to their baby son Hector. Radio Rahim, a very big man who marches throughout the neighborhood with his enormous stereo in hand, blasting it wherever he goes. Buggin' Out, a fidgety individual who has justified intentions but arouses support for them through the wrong means. Smiley, the retarded man who sells postcards of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X. Coconut Sid, Sweet Dick Willie, and ML; the comical trio of middle-aged men who sit at a corner and hilariously comment on what's taking place in the neighborhood.

Then there are the Italian-American, Sal who's proud to have owned and operated for 5 years "Sal's Famous Pizzeria" where Mookey is employed, and his two sons; Pino, an angry young racist who despises the blacks in the neighborhood, and Vito who befriends Mookey despite his tardiness and unreliability. The Korean grocer; Sonny and his family who are always suspicious when black youth come into the store. And finally, Mr. Senor Love Daddy, the radio personnel whose perhaps along with Jade, the voices of reason.

Although the movie reflects on the economic and social situations of urban black communities in 18, the same difficulties that blacks faced back then, they are still coping with today. Lee depicts two aspects representing the conditions of blacks in Bed-Stuy, one positive and uplifting, the other negative and despondent.

The positive facet is reinforced by the luminous colors the characters wear during the searing summer day - radiant yellows, oranges, and reds. The colors signify the vivacious vibe of the community, along with the pulsating music and inspiring voice of Mr. Senor Love Daddy heard from one street corner to the next. The characters in the movie are seen as knowing the inhabitants of their community well, signified by their acknowledgement of one another in the streets and asking each other questions of how they are or bestowing on one another simple comments such as having a good day. Children in the community are seen playing outside their door-steps or rushing for ice cream at the sound of the ice cream truck. Respect is given to elder members of the community as they are addressed by such names as Sister Mother and The Mayor and favors are done for them without any inquiry or fussing. On the surface, all of the characters are seen jovial, but as the movie progresses, the negatives of the community seem to outweigh the positives.

The problems hovering within Bed-Stuy seem to plague both youngsters as well as the elders of the community. Lack of higher education seems to leave individuals not only restless, but a wave of boredom and indifference leads some into other epidemics such as illegitimate births, chronic employment, and indecent behavior. Mookey, embodies the young black man who has to do without the asset of a higher education that can give him a good paying job. His situation is aggravated by the fact that he has immaturely created Hector to take care of. So he settles delivering pizza for Sal, a job that he finds barely makes ends meet for the family he has to support. Coconut Sid, Sweet Dick Willie, and ML are products of chronic unemployment. They endure their harsh reality by sitting in the corner and joking about their situation and their neighborhood's dilemmas. The Mayor, although somewhat respected is made fun of continuously because he staggers around the neighborhood as an alcoholic. The little money he receives from his community, he quickly uses to get some alcohol with and even sends a young kid to Sonny's

In this essay by Marilyn Manson, the topic up for discussion is who is held accountable for the tragedy at Columbine. Marilyn Manson's apparent purpose for writing this essay is to persuade the reader that it is not so easy to blame one person or one thing for what happened. He makes very good points when he backs up his claim that you can't blame the entire circumstance on just one thing. For example, he states how it was first reported that Harrison and Klebold wore make-up and dressed like him. It was also reported that they liked his music. In fact, none of this was true. One can see how misinformation can cause blame to be shifted to the wrong place. Next, he states how other notorious killers were held responsible for their own actions. This points out how the media and America didn't try to find a scapegoat then. Lastly, Marilyn Manson points out how his music often gets misunderstood. The media interprets the lyrics one way, when in fact there's a deeper message in them. You can't take them at only face value, you have to dig deeper and find the message that's not plainly spoken.

It is my person belief that Marilyn Manson states the facts in an intelligent manner and sufficiently back up his claim. I have to agree with almost everything he says. For example, I also believe that Harrison and Klebold should he held totally responsible for their actions. Simply because they are no longer here to accept punishment for what they did, does not mean America can just find someone else to blame and accept the punishment for them. For those that argue the two boys became inspired to do this horrible act from a song, I have to say that they probably already had ideas in their head to do something like this and music was not the last straw that finally sent them over the edge. I think music and media violence was just the most convenient thing to blame at the time. At the most it was a fraction of the circumstances that drove them to commit this act. In conclusion, it is my belief that Marilyn Manson was unjustly blamed for such a horrible act. He just happened to be an easy scapegoat to attack and it is just not that simple to blame one person or thing for what happened.

My junior project is on the Gulf War; also known as Desert Shield and Desert Storm. The liberation of Kuwait has begun, and with this announcement by White House Press Secretary, Marlin Fitzwater, the news was broke to the American public that war against Iraq had been launched by armed forces of the United Nations. The date was Jan.16, 11, and the war began about 40 a.m. on January 17 Iraqi time, or 640 p.m. EST. On January 16 in the United States. It was time to start the war. I Interviewed my father. My father was willing to be interviewed by me for this project. The event my father lived though was the gulf war. My father was born in Ft. Stewart hospital in Georgia April 8,165. He has one sister who currently lives in Atlanta, and a father who was in the military and now is retired and is now living in Germany. His mother lives in Darien. He has a wife, is my mother, and three children, my sister (14), brother (1) and myself (17). He is still in the army. His ranks have changed from a staff sergeant (SSgt) in the time of the war to a CW. He has over 0 years in the army. I learned alot, but I think the ideal of huge giant tanks roaming the big vast sand covered land is pretty scary.

For five and a half months, ever since Iraq invaded and occupied Kuwait on Aug. , 10, the United States had mobilized and led a defensive coalition of United Nations (UN) allied forces in a military action called Operation Desert Shield to protect Saudi Arabia. United States President George Bush had declared that the occupation of Kuwait would not be allowed to stand, and he dispatched land, sea, and air forces of the United States to Persian Gulf bases, mostly in Saudi Arabia. The coalition forces were from Great Britain, France, Canada, Australia, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and other nations. Iraqs president, Saddam Hussein, was finally given a deadline of Jan. 15, 11, to get out of Kuwait. He didnt show any inclination to meet the deadline, so Operation Desert Shield turned into the military offensive Operation Desert Storm. For the first 7 days, Desert Storm was almost entirely a war of air bombardment. Iraqs response was remarkably feeble. It launched scud missiles against Israel and Saudi Arabia. Most of these were intercepted and destroyed by American patriot antimissile rockets, though there was some loss of life. Sometime in January, Iraq released oil into the Persian Gulf, creating a huge pollution problem. As the war was ending, Iraqi forces set fire to more than 600 Kuwaiti oil wells. It would take more than a year to extinguish the fires, which caused severe air pollution. The ground offensive, called Desert Saber, was launched late in the day on February (about 4 a.m. on the 4th in Iraq). It lasted only four days. By that time, nearly the whole infrastructure of Iraq had been destroyed--specifically bridges, highways, electric power systems, water filtration plants, and airports. At the same time, Iraqs ground forces had been terribly battered by the bombing. With uncounted thousands already killed--the number of military fatalities was unofficially put at 150,000--surviving Iraqi troops surrendered by the tens of thousands, and those who stood to fight were quickly and decisively defeated. By February 7, President Bush was able to announce that he had ordered a cease-fire. Iraq was beaten and Kuwait was liberated. It had been the most massive air bombardment and land offensive since World War II.

Sadden Hussein attacked the people of Kuwait. President Bush used the military of the United States to stop Hussein because of a nuclear situation. Most of the general reaction at the time was fear. The reaction that I have found states that many people in the United States were afraid of the nuclear attempts.

Operation Desert Shield and Desert Strom, also known as the Gulf War told by my father from a point of view on the field during the time of war.

I think it was mainly fear of the unknown. I was a staff sergeant in the United States army assigned the senior maintenance supervisor in a line haul transportation company. I was 5 years old. I was married with a son, a daughter, and my wife was pregnant with my second son. I knew that Kuwait was a small country that provided oil to the U.S. I had to remember the war between Iraq and Iran. I knew the Iraqi president had used chemical weapons on his own people. I had felt that the U.S. would not stand by and watch Saddam Hussein take over a country that we were friends with. I was stationed in Kaiserslautern (k-town), Germany with my wife and children. The transportation company I was assigned to had 10 soldiers in the unit. I was the senior maintenance supervisor in a line haul transportation company. The units mission was to transport classes of supply. I was still 5 years old as a staff sergeant, and it was very difficult at the age of 5 to have these duties. I was surprised when I first heard the news. I told a friend of mine that the U.S. should go take out Iraq. I am still in the U.S. army. I am a Chief Warrant Officer three (CW) and a maintenance technician. The Gulf War in my mind was a success for the U.S. and coalition of forces that fought the war. I only wish that we had taken care of Saddam Hussein. He should not be the president of Iraq today and thats my option.

Yes, my life has changed. I learned to live life to the fullest. We do not know what tomorrow will bring. Today could be normal, quiet day, and 4 hours later we could be at war with another country. In August 10, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the U.S. had to step in and stop Saddam Hussein, before he invaded Saudi Arabia. Saddam Hussein wanted to control all of the oil in the Persian Gulf. The U.S. relied a great deal on oil imported from Sandi Arabia and Kuwait. The U.S. started deploying soldiers in August shortly after Iraq invaded Kuwait. My unit deployed the beginning of December 10. The deployment caused my family and me not to celebrate Christmas that year. My wife was pregnant with our fourth child and was due to have the baby in March. You can only imagine all of the uncertain thoughts going through my mind, like, would we make it back from the gulf. We were aware that Iraq might use chemical weapons. My unit transported some of everything from the port in Sandi Arabia to unit locations in the desert. When the air war started, we knew it would be just a matter of time before the ground attack started. We had the Iraqi forces on the run. The objective was to liberate Kuwait to the way it was. My unit re-deployed back to Germany in May and June of 11, and my second son was born on March 1st. Yes, I do understand why the U.S. and the coalition forces went to aid Kuwait and Saudi Arabia oil.

If the U.S. did not go to the Persian Gulf, who knows what the price of gas and oil would be. It taught me what the army was designed to do. It was my first deployment into harms way. I did not know if I was going to return home. There is always that risk or chance that a person might not make it back. When you are responsible for other soldier, you have to ensure that they are trained to react to various situations. Training and practicing on your skills could save your life. I prayed several times a day to cope with the deployment. I had to adapt to a lot of the worst living conditions ever.

I think this interview went will. I have learned alot by talking to my father about the Persian Gulf War. It was exciting taking down notes on this event that my father was involved in. The interview went as easy as I predicted it would. It wasnt that difficult to get the information from him and out of encyclopedias and off the Internet.

In this modern day and age, the word "family" is a very powerful thing. Years and years ago, families used to be networks of togetherness and love. The family went on outings together, ate all their meals together, laughed and played together, and just generally bonded. Today, families seem to be much more meaningless. Minimal time is spent together, family dinners are virtually nonexistent, and the bond and love of years ago just doesn't seem to be there. I am going to discuss in this essay what the definition of family should be with a quote about family unity, and I will also discuss some definitions of what family is perceived as in the modern world today, by using some quotes about physical distance and emotional distance. These quotes will illustrate exactly how most families operate in our civilization, and it will also talk about how the family would act in an ideal world.

Families are said to be "the root of every living soul". This tells us that our families are basically what brought us into being, what gave us life, what shaped our values and beliefs, and what ultimately launched us towards our own independence. Family is basically what keeps us on our own two feet; a support system, if you will. Jane Howard puts it best "Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one." This quote suggests what a family should be in an ideal world. A support group, a "clan" of people who are behind you every step of the way, no matter what. This quote also tells us that everybody needs a family, no matter who they are. Everybody needs someone that they can turn to in times of need. That is what a family should be. The scary part is that if we keep this up, in one hundred years or so, we might have descended into complete desolation. There may be absolutely no socializing with the family, and no bonding whatsoever. We must stop this decline at once, or our civilization is sure to descend into certain chaos.

As I mentioned before, the family of today is much different than the family of 50 years ago. It is much more hardened, and much more deprived of love and affection. As George Burns puts it, "Happiness is having a large, loving, caring, close-knit family in another city." This quote was meant as a joke at the time, but it has ironically become reality nowadays. This quote focuses on the physical distance between families in the late 0s and into the new millennium. Burns is suggesting in this quote that it is fine and wonderful to have a huge family that loves you very dearly, but it is only wonderful if that family is far enough away that you don't have to deal with them. This is the attitude of many teenagers and young people today, as I have heard many of my friends talking about how happy they will be to get out of the house for university. The concept of physical distance in families in western society is rampant among people young and old, and is lending a hand to the decline of families as a whole.

Another aspect of family life that is setting it severely into decline is emotional distance between family members. Families are getting farther and farther away from each other mentally, in ways such as not communicating as well as they once did, or not sitting down together for family meals. The average teenager in this day and age spends less than ten minutes a week talking to his or her parents. As Kin Hubbard puts it, "There is plenty of peace in any home where the family doesn't make the mistake of trying to get together." This is very true of households today. Many families don't like to get together around the table for meals because they just fight too much. They think it would be much more peaceful if the family members interacted as little as possible. In this definition, the family is seen as mainly a nuisance; not something that is good to have around.

Custom writing service can write essays on family

In conclusion, families of today need to see a change, and they need to see it quickly. Family life is in a huge decline from where it stood thirty years ago. If we don't make a change, families are going to further descend until they reach nothingness. In an ideal world, families would be described as a support system; a network of people who are looking out for you. But in reality, family these days is defined as a nuisance and a bother to have to participate in. This trend has to change to keep our world afloat. Everything in the world revolves around family, and if we take that away, we take away our whole world.

Testing On Animals

Every year thousands of animals die at the hands of curious scientists. Before they die, they are routinely burned, scalded, poisoned, starved, given electric shocks, addicted to medicines, subjected to near freezing temperature, dozed with radioactive elements, driven insane, deliberately inflicted with diseases such as AIDS, cancer, herpes etc. Their brains and spinal cord are damaged since the use of anesthesia is rarely administrated. So, should this be allowed? NO.

Despite all this cruelty, not a single disease has been cured through vivisection in the previous century. More than a million medicines are marketed each year after undergoing the unreliable test methods. Two of the most famous tests are the Draize or eye irritancy test and the LD50, lethal dose 50 (Patterson, p41). The Draize test is performed on albino rabbits because they are cheap, docile and do not have tear ducts so as to wash away the chemicals (P.E.T.A., www. Peta.com). The substances put in the eye vary from mascara to aftershave. Reactions include ulcers, inflammation and rupture of the eyeball and bleeding. LD50 refers to the lethal dose required to kill 50% of the test species (Fox, p1). There is also LD100... ironically of human poisoning. Some medicines pass safe in case of animals but can prove to be very harmful in humans such as Opren 500 people suffered side effects as well as damage to skin, eyes, kidneys and livers. Clinoquenil, another medicine, led to the loss of eyesight. In the same way, many drugs harmful to animals can be beneficial to humans such as penicillin, an antibiotic to humans but killed guinea pigs and common aspirin caused birth defects in mice and rats. Skin irritancy tests differ from species to species for example nicotine is lethal at .mg/kg in dogs and 5mg/kg in rats and 0.mg/kg in humans (PETA fact sheet). This is proof that animal testing is unreliable but, unfortunately, these sadistic tests will go on every day. So basically both the animals and humans die.

Some people argue that because of animals we have been able to find a cure for some diseases. Without animal research, scientists are limited in their quest to find treatments and cures for illnesses such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimers, spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis. History has shown that animal research is an essential component of most modern medical breakthroughs. Over the past century, animal research has helped to increase our life span by nearly 8 years. Examples include Antibiotics for the treatment of bacterial infections. Vaccines for smallpox, tetanus, diphtheria, polio, measles, Lyme disease, hepatitis B and chicken pox, anti-coagulants, anesthesia, and neuromuscular blocking agents. The quality of life has also improved for pets, farm animals and wildlife because of what we have learned through animal research. During this process however many animals and human die, before the product can be used. The product can and normally does still harm people for the first couple years on the market.

We are cutting down forests which provide shelter to these animals, dump toxic chemicals and sewage in the waters in which they live, wear the tusks and fur of the last few of their species and pour cosmetics into their eyes to determine the harmful side effects they might cause to humans. Animals possess the same kind and of feelings and emotions that humans do and without anesthesia, they are subjected to unbearable pain, which eventually leads to their ill-fated and gruesome death. We fail to give animals the respect and rights, which they deserve and treat them as lifeless unfeeling scientific specimens. Other methods for testing products can be practiced which are accurate, less time consuming and less expensive. These include cell and cultures which hold no capacity for pain, less animals better planned work and computer models to answer questions and guide research .If animal testing is totally eliminated, it would free 6.8 billion dollars which can be used for educational processes and health care. Thus, more than 0 million people can be helped who cannot afford health.

Animals have been around for as long as humans. God created them just like humans. They have souls just like humans. Animals have personalities just like humans. So why is it ok to test on animals and not human? Animal testing has caused mistakes and misreading when it was suppose to help humans. So why should we kill animals so that we can then go and test on human beings.

Please note that this sample paper on Animal is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Animal, we are here to assist you. Case Study 1 Lack of Communication

The problem we identified is a lack of communication regarding changes in responsibilities within associate positions in turn effecting customer responses. Changes are not communicated to the people who are affected most by the changes.

How we identified the problem When an employee goes to a designated employee who is in charge of a certain account, the designated employee says, "I do not do that account anymore." Now the new mission is who "does" this account belong to now. After speaking to the supervisor to find out who handles the account, the new contact is approached. When the original inquiry is made, the response is, "I do not handle that account." After informing him or her that she does, the new response is, "No one told me that, I do not know anything about that account." So, after all is done, fifteen minutes or more has been wasted on finding out who handles the account and still there is no answer to the original question. For everyone who has to get information regarding that account, now has to go through the same process and frustration.

The reassigning of positions without communicating it with the rest of the organization could cause a lot of problems with providing good customer service. For example, if an employee receives a phone call inquiring about a situation they do not know about and are not able to get an answer for the customer right away, may cause the customer to become impatient and possibly irate. Another situation would be, if something specific needed to get done, but no one is there to help, the task would just sit there and maybe forgotten, "out of sight, out of mind". Which would then cause problems in trying to figure out who had originally taken the call from the customer and did not follow through the proper channels to get the help.

Write your Lack of communication research paper

Other problems may arise for employees who accepts a new position, for instance, if employees know of a person who used to work a certain account they would then try to burden them with problems that need to be resolved. This would be a big problem not only for the employee answering the phones, but for the employee who just accepted a new position as well. His or her new position may require as much of his or her attention as needed. Therefore, the help may not be there when needed. Another problem would be, is if a certain employee knows a specific procedure or way of doing things and does not share with or cross train anyone else in the organization, it could cause a major problem for the company if that particular employee decides to leave. No one would know what to do or who to go to, to help resolve a problem.

Resources for solving the customer service issues related to missed calls would consist of the employees affected by the changes or reorganizations. To solve this problem it is important to identify the root cause of the problem first. Why is there a gap in communication? Why are people not communicating the changes in the organization? To solve this issue it will be important to use the supervisor as a resource. The supervisor should design a process for reorganization and include a communication plan. The process would need to be shared with all customer services representatives.

Anytime there is a change, like someone gets reassigned or there is a new duty for someone, a process needs to be created to follow. When someone gets reassigned they need to hand off their open issues to their immediate supervisor so he/she can delegate or do it themselves. The supervisor needs to take the initiative and follow up with the employee to make sure all loose ends are tied up. When a new responsibility is given to an employee. A training session should be held for the team and supervisors so all are aware of who is doing what. When a question arises there should never be a question of who to go to who will know the answer. The supervisors/team leads should let all of the teams know when a new change is implemented so no one loses a step. Email is a great resource to communicate changes. Staff meetings can be an efficient way to discuss changes and follow up with unresolved issues from employees.

Nutritional Assessment of The Atkins Diet

Mary is a 0 year old college student who is 55 tall and weighs 165. Her friend at exercise class tells her about a new diet called The Atkins Diet. Will this weight-loss plan work for Mary? Answer the following questions to help determine the correct answer to this.

Does the diet meet all nutritional needs except energy? Explain. (4 points)

No. The Atkins Diet encourages dieters to significantly reduce carbohydrate intake and therefore deprives the body of it’s most vital energy source- glucose. By reducing the amount of carbohydrates that can be consumed, the diet restricts nutritious foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are essential to a healthy body. By omitting certain foods, such as fruits and grains, the Atkins diet boast a diet that is deficient in such major nutrients as dietary fiber and carbohydrates, as well as in selected vitamins, minerals, phytochemicals, which help reduce the risk of disease. The Atkins Diet suggests finding these nutrients in supplements, which is a rather expensive and unhealthy way to get nutrients that can otherwise be found naturally found in foods.

Does the plan offer a reasonable rate of weight loss? Explain. ( points)

No, The Atkins Diet does not offer a reasonable rate of weight loss. The induction phase of the Atkins Diet shifts the body into the harmful metabolic state of ketosis where the body relies on stored fat for energy. The Atkins diet suggest that a person should lose between 5 to 10 pounds in the first two weeks of induction. A healthy diet should show moderate losses in weight rather than some â€miracle. It took longer than two weeks to acquire the amount of stored fat the body has and should therefore take longer than two weeks to burn it off. It is harmful to lose that much weight in that short of a time period.

Will she be losing muscle or fat? Support your answer.(5 points)

If Mary chose to follow the Atkins diet, she would be losing some fat, but also a large amount of muscle. By allowing the body to enter a state of ketosis, Mary’s body breaks down stored fat to supply energy. The negative side of this is that ketosis can lead to muscle breakdown also. By using the body’s allotted amount of protein for energy, it reduces the amount of protein available for it’s essential duties (muscle repair, rebuilding, etc). Also, a large amount of the weight loss Mary will experience will be as a result of fluid loss. Carbohydrates are vital for fat metabolism. By restricting the intake of carbohydrates to an inadequate amount, the body is unable to completely metabolize fats, which defeats the whole principle of burning fat by using the Atkins Diet.

Can we predict excess fluid loss to be part of the weight loss on this diet? Explain. (4 points)

Yes, excess fluid loss would be expected as a result of the Atkin’s diet because high protein intake induces frequent urination. Consequently, a large amount of the weight loss Mary will experience will be as a result of fluid loss. This is proved by an article that the American Heart association published that states â€weight loss that occurs as a result of a high-protein/low-carbohydrate diet is likely to be mostly water weight. This is harmful not only because body fluids are essential to the body’s maintenance of homeostasis, but also because increased urination causes the body to excrete essential vitamins an nutrients such as calcium. Excess fluid loss from the Atkins diet can be largely attributed to the induction of ketosis. Ketosis prevents the body from breaking down fats into water and carbon dioxide, which is essential to a healthy metabolism. By taking in too much protein, the body reacts by trying to excrete the large amounts of nitrogenous waste and

Can we predict any biochemical imbalance from this intake? Explain. (5 points)

Yes, biochemical imbalance can be predicted from the principle behind the Atkins diet. If Mary decided to use the Atkins Diet, she will be taking in too much protein therefore affecting her nitrogen balance. Although Mary will be in positive nitrogen balance, she will be excreting a large amount of the excess protein she takes in. This will result in the body’s continued strain of excreting the nitrogen waste. This will cause her to excrete more fluids than her body takes in. This will negatively affect her body’s state of homeostasis. Ketosis is another imbalance that will result from the Atkins diet.

Is the diet based on scientifically sound principles? Explain. ( points)

No, the Atkins diet has many negative affects and is not based on scientifically sound principles. First, the Atkins diet calls for too much protein and fat and inadequate amounts of carbohydrates. The brain and nervous system prefer glucose found in carbohydrates to function. The Atkins diet suggest taking in no more than 60 grams of carbohydrates, while 50 to 100 grams of carbohydrates are required to prevent ketosis. When the body goes into ketosis, it produces ketones, which suppress appetite, but they also cause fatigue, nausea, and a potentially dangerous fluid loss. By inducing the body into ketosis, the body is forced to run off of energy that is supplied by proteins and fats. The Atkins diet suggests that dieters should avoid starches and dietary fibers that not only help to reduce the negative effects of fats, but also are vital to a healthy digestive tract. Atkins meals found the diet was not only high in protein and low in carbohydrates, but very high in saturated fat and cholesterol, very low in fiber, and below the recommended daily values for several vitamins and minerals. Studies show that diets excessive in animal meats and high in protein, are linked to osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, and renal disease, and pose particular dangers for people with diabetes. Lastly, the Atkins diet suggest taking supplements to acquire the essential vitamins and nutrients that would otherwise be found by eating a balanced diet . Rather than avoiding essential food groups that contain carbohydrates like the Atkins diet suggest, Mary should follow the food guide pyramid and take in more complex carbohydrates rather than â€empty calories such as those found in colas.

Does it include an exercise component? Yes or No (1 point)

No, The Atkins diet does not mention exercise in it’s formula to burn fat. Exercise is vital to optimal health and should be implemented in everyone’s life and especially in lives of those who are trying to lose weight.

Does it address the other aspects of overeating so that Mary can make changes in her eating habits and lifestyle that will encourage achieving and maintaining a healthy weight? Explain why this might be important. (5 points)

No, the Atkins diet does not address other aspects of overeating that Mary can avoid to maintain a healthy weight. Even at the maintenance stage of the Atkins Diet, an inadequate amount of carbohydrate intake, and excessive amounts of fats and proteins are suggested. The high protein, high fat diet that is suggested by the Adkins diet is not the solution that Mary needs to her weight problem, and further increases the risk of many diseases. Mary should engage in a diet that consists of eating a high-fiber diet that replaces simple carbohydrates with complex carbohydrates like whole wheat, brown rice, fruits, vegetables, and legumes in their natural forms. This, along with a diet of adequate amounts of healthy fats and proteins, and excercise should optimize Mary’s health and reduce her risk of disease, therefore providing her with a long term solution to achieving and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

the plan

Atkins states we can change our metabolism and lose weight easily simply by eating foods high in protein and fat and limiting foods high in carbohydrate. Consuming a high level of carbohydrates causes overproduction of insulin, Dr. Atkins says, leading to increased hunger and weight gain. Carbohydrates are limited to only 15 to 60 grams per day, while protein and fat are highly encouraged.

upside

• Many people like being able to eat as much protein and fat as they wish, since these foods are often restricted in more traditional diet plans.

• For people who have tried a low-fat, high-carbohydrate weight loss plan without success, increasing protein in their diet often results in decreased food cravings and more rapid weight loss.

• The diet is relatively easy to follow; there are no complicated meal plans

downside

• Any diet that limits carbohydrate causes the body to rely on fat or muscle for energy. When our body breaks down stored fat to supply energy, a byproduct called ketones are formed. Ketones suppress appetite, but they also cause fatigue, nausea, and a potentially dangerous fluid loss. Anyone with diabetes, heart, or kidney problems should NOT follow a diet that promotes the formation of ketones, including the Atkins plan.

• Eating unlimited amounts of fat, especially saturated fat found in meat products, can lead to increased risk of heart disease.

duration

tics say meat-heavy, high-protein eating patterns -- such as that espoused by Atkins -- are linked to osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, and renal disease. An analysis of sample Atkins meals found the diet was not only high in protein and low in carbs, but very high in saturated fat and cholesterol, very low in fiber, and below the recommended daily values for several vitamins and minerals.

The American Heart Association (AHA) does not recommend high-protein diets for weight loss. According to the AHA, diets like the Atkins system arent proven effective for long-term weight loss. They point out that these diets restrict healthy foods that provide essential nutrients. The AHA asserts that most Americans already eat more protein and fat than their bodies need, and eating a high-protein, high-fat diet raises the risk of many types of disease.

Dr. Dean Ornish espouses a middle-of-the-road approach to dieting. He states high-protein diets may work in the short term because some of their principles are accurate. Americans do eat too many simple carbohydrates like sugar, white flour, and white rice, according to Ornish. The body absorbs simple carbs quickly, causing blood sugar to spike and provoking an insulin response that speeds the conversion of calories to fat. Reducing sugar and processed grains can aid in weight loss. Ornish proposes eating a high-fiber diet that replaces simple carbohydrates with complex carbs like whole wheat, brown rice, fruits, vegetables, and legumes in their natural forms.

AtkinsDietAlert.org is brought to you by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, a leading advocate for preventive medicine, especially good nutrition. PCRM has been speaking out about the dangers of high-protein diets since its founding in 185. Studies show that meat-heavy, high-protein eating patterns are, over the long run, linked to osteoporosis, heart disease, colon cancer, and renal disease, and pose particular dangers for people with diabetes.

Given the seriousness of these health risks, and the strength of the scientific evidence currently available, PCRM hopes this Web site will encourage people to be wary of high-protein diets and to choose healthier options. PCRM is also concerned about possible legal liability for doctors who prescribe these diets.

The arguments for and against high-protein/low-carbohydrate diets, such as Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution, continue to be debated.

Proponents report that by limiting carbohydrate intake the body burns stored fat. The philosophy is that high-protein, high-fat, low-carbohydrate diets force the body into a fasting state called ketosis, which may bring about quick weight loss.

During the two-week induction phase of Dr. Atkins diet, only pure proteins are allowed. Pure proteins include meat, fish and shellfish, poultry, and eggs, along with pure fats such as butter, olive oil, and mayonnaise.

No more than 0 grams of carbohydrates are allowed during this period, in the form of such vegetables as salad, asparagus, broccoli, and kale. No fruit, bread, grains, or starchy vegetables such as potatoes are allowed.

However, according to the American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR), deliberately inducing ketosis can lead to muscle breakdown, dehydration, headaches, nausea, and kidney problems. Further, the AICR warns, By omitting certain foods, and sometimes even entire food groups, these diets are deficient in such major nutrients as dietary fiber and carbohydrates, as well as in selected vitamins, minerals, and protective phytochemicals.

To offset this deficiency, the Atkins Diet requires the addition of vitamin and mineral supplements.

Heart association concerned

All carbohydrates are not equal. Their primary function is to provide energy for the body, especially the brain and the nervous system. Complex carbohydrates - starches - are those found in such foods as whole grain breads, pasta, cereal, potatoes, fruits, and vegetables. Simple carbohydrates - sugars - are those found in sweets and white flour.

The American Heart Association (AHA) has published a position statement against high-protein diets. An article in the AHA journal Circulation published on October , 001, explains that weight loss that occurs as a result of a high-protein/low-carbohydrate diet is likely to be mostly water weight.

The AHA states High-protein diets may be associated with increased risk for coronary heart disease. . .When diets high in protein are severely limited in carbohydrates, food choices become restrictive and overall nutrient adequacy and long-term palatability are also of concern. Successful weight loss occurs most frequently when a nutritionally adequate diet that allows for caloric deficits. . .is tailored according to individual food preferences. A minimum of 1,00 calories per day for women and 1,500 calories per day for men should be provided. . .Over the long term, diet should be consistent with a balanced eating plan that supports weight maintenance and lowers chronic disease risk.

The appeal of early weight loss may help dieters to continue to limit their carbohydrate intake, and this may account for continued weight loss. However, the safety and efficacy of these diets have not been documented in long-term studies. What is known, is that by eating more protein over time than the body needs, particularly if the source is primarily animal protein, low-density lipoprotein (LDL-the bad cholesterol) increases. Also, the excess protein increases the loss of urinary calcium, which may cause osteoporosis.

Dietary tips from health leaders

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) suggests that the initial goal of any weight-loss program should be to reduce body weight by about 10 percent. If necessary, further weight loss can be achieved by continuing to reduce caloric intake and increase physical activity.

To cut down on calories, the NIH and the AHA suggest that eating smaller servings of all of the food groups is healthier over the long term than eliminating foods from specific groups. The AHA recommends that a healthy daily diet should include between 50 and 100 grams of protein, a minimum of 100 grams of complex carbohydrates (as opposed to the Atkins Diet, which suggests a maximum of 60 grams for weight maintenance, and no more than 0 grams per day in the early stages of the diet), and a total fat content comprising no more than 0 percent of your daily caloric intake.

The AHA also recommends five or more servings of fruits and vegetables per day; these foods have a high nutrient-to-calorie ratio and are fiber-rich. Studies have shown that people who eat generous amounts of fruits and vegetables are less likely to suffer from heart disease, high blood pressure, and stroke.

By including five or more servings of fruits and vegetables along with other complex carbohydrates in ones daily diet, the fiber provides a feeling of fullness, therefore the tendency to eat more than is necessary is decreased.

In comparison, the Atkins Diet allows no fruit during the two-week induction stage, and suggests that thereafter, one may slowly add five additional grams of carbohydrates, such as 1/4 cup of blueberries, an apple, grapefruit, or half an avocado into the daily diet each week.

Why I Want to be a Lawyer

Law, one of the most major occupations of our society today. Without law enforcers and lawyers the world would be in complete chaos. Without law the futures that we have today just might not be in tact like they are now.

Police officers keep all, or most of, the laws that are passed enforced although sometimes they might miss a few things. Although there are still many drug dealers, murderers, and a lot of other criminals in our world, without police there would be a lot more. Policemen keep us as a people in order. Sometimes we may take for granted the jobs of policemen, but they do more than what we may think. Policemen arrest many people of many races which leads to the next section lawyers.

Lawyers defend just as many people as policemen arrest, and although they are in the same area of occupation they have very different jobs. Without a job such as being a lawyer there might be many of innocent people in jail and a lot of guilty people on the streets.

One reason I want to be a lawyer is that lawyers help protect the innocent and put away the guilty. That is why I want to study to be a law student. I like helping people and I would do as much as it takes to make this world a better place. A few reasons that I am a

good candidate for this field is that a am a competitive person and that I am argumentative and like to make my point. I want to be a lawyer because I like to research,

Pierre

and being a lawyer requires a lot of time and research. In my future I hope to be one of the best African American attorneys in the history of the United states. Being an attorney can lead to other great jobs in law and I will make it my goal to exceed all expectations.

Now to continue my paper, no one can tell me what to do in my life as my career and no one ever will. I am going to be a lawyer because I want to be a lawyer not because my friend wants to be lawyer. When I become a lawyer I don't want to be a defense attorney because I wouldn't want to defend a guilty person and win their case because I would be stuck with that for the rest of my life. Telling someone that my client is guilty could put my life in danger and that is another reason why I don't want to be a defense attorney.

I know that majoring in law will be a long and maybe even tiresome journey but I am up to the challenge and no matter what happens I will get their. God will help me get to where I need to get and as long as I believe in him and follow him I will make it.
