As far back as I can remember, my grandmother has always had a great love for animals and always had a lot of them. As I was growing up, she had chickens, ducks, geese, dogs, and cats. There was, however, one particular animal she owned at one time that I will never forget. When I was in first and second grade, my grandmother owned a big white house with green shutters. It was back in the woods, and right next to the river. Across the lawn from it was a smaller house which was where my mother, my father and I lived. Since we were living on my grandmother's property, we had to put up with the animals that she had to.

One morning I was walking across the lawn from my grandmother's house to mine and it happened. I heard a loud honk. When I turned, there was Henry charging toward me, neck down and beak forward ready to attack. I immediately increased my pace from a nice steady walk to a "run like hell" tempo. I made it to the ramp and he was close behind. He began following me up the ramp, but I made it through the door and was safe. From that day forth I always kept a stick by the door so that whenever I made my venture across the lawn I could protect myself if I needed to.

I was not the only one who Henry liked to assault. He would go after my mother and my friends as well. He didn't go after my grandmother anymore. The one time he dared to, she taught him a lesson. She grabbed him by the neck and scolded him, and he never bothered her again. I eventually noticed a pattern in this goose's frequent attacks. He only chased after females. He never attacked my father. He loved my father. When my father would sit out on our front porch, Henry would always walk up the steps just so my father could pet him.

I hated that stupid sexist goose because he would single me out and other members of the female sex. He would always ruin my day. One day, though, an event happened that I thought would change all of our lives. My mother was driving down the driveway in the truck just minding her own business. All of a sudden there he was charging toward the truck. My mother slowed down but kept driving. She was hoping it would scare him and he would move out of the way. That was not the case. He kept on running right toward the truck in an attack position and then BOOM! There was a head on collision between Henry and the truck.

Well, I was quite happy when I found out what happened, but also disappointed when I found out he survived the accident. He did go blind, however, and could no longer chase us. I guess there was some positive outcome of this incident.

A few months went by and life was great without having to worry about being pecked to death every time I would walk outside. I thought my troubles and conflicts with that dumb bird were over, but I was wrong. Henry gained his sight back! He immediately began to pursue and attack us all again.

Eventually we sold the house and the people who bought it took the animals along with it. I was finally rid of that vexing creature. Even after all of our experiences with this goose that did not stop my grandmother from starting over again in her new home. She again got geese, ducks, and chickens and those geese were just as mean as Henry had been. I still hate geese to this day.

Financial Project Brocade

According to an article about the Storage Area Networking industry posted on financial information provider, fool.com, the total size of the SAN market is expected to reach $4.6 billion in 006. This is a dramatic increase in market size from a reported size of $1. billion in 00. This increase will no doubt increase competition in the SAN industry. Currently, Brocade is the top contender in this market, and Brocade's main competition comes from Cisco Systems and McData. While Brocade has the most market share in both the SAN switching and Fabric switch markets, it is # to McData in Director market share. Cisco Systems has a relatively low market share in all three markets mentioned, but it is also new to the industry and is expected to become a very strong contender. Other competitors listed in Brocade's 10-K include Inrange and QLogic corporations, each with much smaller market shares.

Brocade began operations on August 4, 15 in San Jose, CA; but was not incorporated until May 14, 1 as a Delaware corporation. Reasoning for incorporating in a different state than operations included more business friendly laws in Delaware. The company's CEO and chairman is Greg Reyes who has served this position since May 001. Brocade's Vice President, Finance and CFO is Tony Canova, who has also had this position since May 001. Included in Brocade's BOD is Chris Paisley, who kicks ass. The independent auditor for Brocade, as of 00, is the international company, KPMG LLP. This is a change from Brocade's past independent public accountant, Arthur Andersen LLP, which has ceased operations. Both Arthur Andersen LLP and KPMG LLP gave Brocade reports that express the opinion that Brocade's financial statements were presented fairly and were made in accordance with GAAP.

On November 5, 00, Brocade announced an agreement to acquire Rhapsody, a privately held technology company that provides an intelligent fabric application platform. Brocade's investment strategy is to make minority investments in companies that develop complementary goods and services or broaden the market. Other significant changes to the company include a recent announcement of a restructuring program in efforts to maintain profitability. This program includes an approximate 1 percent reduction of Brocade's current workforce, consolidation of facilities, and restructuring of business functions.

Horizontal and vertical analysis of Brocade's balance sheets from 1 to Q of 00 shows several trends in different assets and liabilities as a percent of total assets and total liabilities and shareholder's equity. First, current assets as a percentage of total assets have shrunk over time from 6% in 1 to 4% in Q of 00. There was a large decline from 6% in Brocade's first year of being incorporated to 6% in 000, and after that, the decline was more gradual. An increase in long-term assets such as Plant, Property, and Equipment; long-term investments; and other assets caused this decline. Another important percentage to decline over time is the percentage of acid test assets to total assets. This went from 1% in 1 to 46% in Q of 00, indicating that a lesser proportion of Brocade's total assets were in cash, marketable securities, and accounts receivable accounts. Like the others, the percentage of current liabilities to total liabilities and shareowner's equity also decreased over time. This percentage went from 8% in 1 to 10% in Q of 00. This means that less and less of the company was financed by short-term debt. Computing Brocade's acid test ratios from 1 to Q of 00 reveals not only that Brocade is a highly liquid company, but also that it has been gradually becoming more liquid as the years pass on. There is an exception to this; however, and that is the year 001. The acid ratio started at . in 1, went up to 4. in 000, dropped dramatically to .8 in 001, went back up to 4.1 in 00, and rose to 4.5 in Q of 00. Although the all acid ratios for Brocade were certainly high enough by lender's standards, it may be important to note that doubled current liabilities in 001 of $115 million up from $64 million in 000 caused the exceptional acid ratio in 001.

In examination of Brocade's statement of cash flows, the sources of cash generated each year can be seen. The following chart shows net cash provided by operating activities and net cash provided by financing activities as percentages of the net cash increases for each year. It is important to note that Q of 00 actually had a net cash decrease for the quarter.

Q00 00 001 000 1

operating cash/ net cash increase for each year -% 0% 1% 406% 10%

financing cash/ net cash increase for each year 7% 160% 66% 558% 45%

In 1, a much greater portion of net cash for the year was provided by financing activities. This does not necessarily have negative indications for Brocade's financial standings. The reason being is that this was Brocade's first year as a corporation, so it is logical that they would need to finance most of their cash. This changed in 000, when cash provided by operating activities nearly doubled that of cash provided by financial activities. In 001, operating activities still provided more cash than financing activities; however, this changed in 00, where financing activities provided $477.51 million more cash. This is important to note because it means that Brocade accumulated a very large debt in 00. The chart is not as clear for Q of 00 because both the cash provided by financing activities and the net cash increase for the quarter were negative values; however, cash from operations did provide $6.5 million. Because on average, Brocade gets more of its cash each year from operating activities, it is not likely that they will have problems with short-term solvency. However, the very large amount of convertible subordinated debt acquired in 00 may provide long-term solvency problems in the future.

In examining Brocade's long-term solvency, it is important to look at how its leverage ratios have changed over the years. The following is a chart displaying Brocade's debt/asset and debt/equity ratios from 1 to Q of 00. It also shows these ratios if Commitments (lease obligations) were included in the liabilities portion of the balance sheet for years 000-00

Debt/ Assets Ratio Q00

51% 00

5% 001

1% 000

14% 1

8%

Debt/ Equity Ratio 104% 107% 7% 16% %

Debt/ Assets ratio (w/ capitalized Commitments) 5% 4% 15%

Debt/ Equity Ratio (w/ capitalized Commitments) 110% 0% 17%

There are a few trends that can be seen in this chart. One is that since 00, debt has become a much larger portion of total assets. This can be attributed to the aforementioned sizable long-term debt that Brocade accrued in 00. Another change, also attributed to the large long-term debt, is that total liabilities have drastically become a greater source of assets than shareholder's equity. The jump of the debt/equity ratio between the years 001-00 went from 7% to 107%, respectively, signifies a dramatic increase in the use of borrowed funds. This could pose problems for Brocade's long-term solvency.

When lenders want to see if Brocade can make required interest payments from current earnings they will look at the times interest earned ratio. The following is the times interest earned ratio for the years 000, 00, and Q of 00. 1 and 001 have been omitted because the amount of these year's interest expenses was negligible.

Times interest earned ratio Q00

7.7571 00

.6771 000

1547.778

From these ratios, it is plain to see that Brocade easily covers its interest payments with current earnings. This means that a lender would be very confident that Brocade would be able to make interest payments owed to them, and therefore, be willing to lend money to Brocade. From a financial standpoint, Brocade seems to be a very stable business. The fact that Brocade looks so good to lenders helped them to accumulate the massive debt in 00, which would be the only source of doubt in analyzing Brocades financial security. The future of Brocade's good financial standings depends on the company's ability to pay off current portions of its long-term debt as they come due. This is dependent on Brocade's ability to generate much more cash from operations than from financing activities in the upcoming years.

Next is an examination of how management has conducted its investing activities. This examination is aided by the following table which shows the fixed asset turnover and asset turnover ratios from 1 to Q of 00.

Fixed asset turnover ratio(sales/long-term assets) Q00

1% 00

80% 001

165% 000

188% 1

186%

Asset turnover(Sales/ total assets) 10% 40% 75% 7% 5%

The trends in these two ratios are that over the years, sales are becoming a smaller portion of assets. An exception is the change of sales increasing as a portion of total assets between 1 and 001. This could be explained by the fact that Brocade was just starting as a corporation in 1, and as a result, had a relatively paltry amount of assets while also enjoying increasing amounts of sales relative to other years. The dramatic decrease in the asset turnover ratio between 001 and 00 can be explained by Brocade's more that doubling total assets while only increasing sales by $4.4 million. This doubling of total assets was caused by Brocade's purchasing of a $640.777 million long-term asset in 00. The value of this purchase will not be fully assessable until it either pays off or proves to be unnecessary in the future. The fixed asset turnover ratio also exhibits an exception in the year of 1, which can also be attributed to the fact that Brocade was new as a corporation. This extremely high ratio is because back in 1, Brocade hardly had any long-term assets to speak of, and even though sales were relatively small, they still dwarfed long-term assets. The fact that these asset turnover ratios are getting smaller over the years reflects the normal growth of a large corporation as it accumulates assets. The decreasing ratios do, however, have negative implications for Brocade. They indicate that it is taking more and more assets to generate each sale as time goes on. NEED INDUSTRY STANDARDS HERE!

The perception of order in chaos is a function of linguistics, as it is of all sciences. At rare times the development of order becomes and act of creation pure and simple. It was so when J.R.R. Tolkien produced, out of his vocation of linguistics, the literature of Middle-Earth The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings.

Language is so integral to culture that a linguist can reconstruct a culture from its language just as a biologist can reconstruct an animal from a bone. Tolkien's Production of the invented language called Quenya compelled him to depict the Elvish cultures of The Silmarillion.

Tolkien spent much of his youth involved in learning, studying, and creating languages. His mother introduced him to Latin, French, and German. While at school, he was taught or taught himself Greek, Middle English, Old English (Anglo-Saxon), Old Norse (Old Icelandic), Gothic, modern, and medieval Welsh, Finnish, Spanish, and Italian. Other languages of which he had a working knowledge included Russian, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, and Lombardic.

The critical influence that directed Tolkien's creative genius toward the works for which he is best known occurred when, at the age of twenty-one, he read the old English poem Crist by Cynewulf. Two lines stood out vividly

Order Custom Essay on Tolkien

Eala Earendel engla beorhast

Ofer middangeard monnum sended.

Hail Earendel, brightest of angels,

Above Middle-Earth sent unto men.

The imagery of an angelic light sent purposefully to mankind is powerful. In these two lines are three elements essential to Tolkien's works a light called Earendel, its purposeful sending to men, and the word Middle-earth.

Middle-earth is an ancient designation for Europe or the known world of Europeans. It is universal for peoples to see their environment, large or small, as central. Medieval English spoke of the known lands as middle-erde of meddel-earth. In Old English the word was middan-geard.

In 114, after reading the Crist, Tolkien wrote his first poem about Earendil, as he spelled the name, and during the following two years began to combine the theme of Earendil with an invented language, based on Finnish, which as to become Quenya Elvish. He began to write poetry in this language. Humphrey Carpenter records a segment of an early poem for which no translation is given

Ai lintulinda Lasselanta

Pilingeve suyer nalla ganta

Kuluvi ya karnevalinar

V'ematte singi Eldamar

The poem contains the elements Eldamar and Valinor essential to The Silmarillion. It apparently begins with a characteristic Elvish poignancy "O swiftly sing of the Fall of Leaves."

Elvish languages continued to grow and flourish, and the tales that would later become The Silmarillion began to take shape. Of these languages, Tolkien said, "The 'Sindarin', a Gray-Elven language, is in fact constructed deliberately to resemble Welsh phonologically and to have a relation to High-Elven (Quenya) to that existing between British (properly so-called) and Latin. All the names in the book, and the language, are of course constructed, and not at random." The book referred to was The Lord of the Rings which is not in fact a trilogy (the three books are not complete stories in themselves) and was not considered so by Tolkien. However they were created, the languages are certainly not random. They lend to Tolkien's works a unique dimension of realism

The method in Kafkas Metamorphosis is very direct. From his attention

grabbing first sentence until the end of the 58 page story, Kafka bluntly

tells the story of Gregor Samsa who found himself changed in his bed

into a monstrous vermin. While most, if not all, critics treat the story

as an extended metaphor, the text presents almost no evidence that

Gregors predicament isnt genuine. It can not be that Gregor simply sees

himself as this hideous creature, because everyone who sees Gregor

throughout the story is horrified by his appearance. The cleaning lady

even refers to him as dung beetle. Its almost as if Kafka was , by his

very directness, trying to eliminate the possibility that the story was

any sort of metaphor. His direct, unembellished approach remains constant

throughout the story. To find the message in Metamorphosis, however,

one must assume that the story is meant for much more than entertainment.

Before his transformation at the beginning of the book, Gregor Samsa was

working very hard at a menial job to support his entire family. While his

boss was very strict, Gregor managed to do well enough to keep his family

in an apartment that was larger than their needs required. He was even

planning to send his sister to the music academy to further her violin

skills. But to call Gregors life tedious would be an understatement.

Every day he awoke early to catch the same train to do the same job until

it was time for him to return home. Kafka implies that in order to save

money, or for some unknown reason, Gregors social life is almost

nonexistent. Therefore, the message found in Metamorphosis may be one of

boredom. Gregors day to day life was as monotonous as it could possibly

be, so one day, he let his imagination run wild and imagined what life

would be like as a hideous vermin.

A Raisin in the Sun Essay question

Throughout history, America has showed its will and strength to overcome obstacles and to reach its goals. Every new decade demonstrated something knew and different that America had to pull through. This country has overcome many important feats, which shape our history and the way we live today. Back in the 150's, America was starting something new. We have just come out of vigorous wars and just wanted to relax. During this period, segregation of the country was not under way, but many African-Americans wanted it. They wanted to live a normal life and wanted to live like the white families did. In this book, it shows a poor black family living in a small apartment. This play shows you what it was like to live in their family, by putting the audience into the characters lives. It showed you how they lived and what troubles were brought to them. But there is one character in this play that sticks out in my mind and that is Walter.

Living in this small apartment is the Younger family. This family consists of a couple, Walter and Ruth, with their son Travis. Also, Walters's sister, Beneatha and their mother, referred to as "Mama," also lives in the apartment. They are a happy family but just had to get over the tragic death of Mamas' husband. From his death though, they received a check for $10,000. Instinctively, Mama, but half of it in the bank account, but unfortunately gave the other half to Walter. She told him to put half of the money into an account for Beneatha's college, and for him to keep the other half. Since Walter first got married, he was a chauffeur for a white man, and he always hated it. But he had the opportunity to open up a store with his two buddies; however, Ruth told him that she did not want him to do that and managed to change his mind. Also, another problem why he couldn't go in on the store was because he did not have the money, but now that his mama gave him the money, he had an idea. He decided to invest in the store and gave his friend all of the money. He would soon learn a lesson that would haunt him forever. His so called friend, took the money and escaped somewhere with it, leaving Walter with nothing except the wraith and guilt of his family. Through his life he did many stupid things, and he knew it, but there was one thing he knew was not stupid and that was having his son grow up to be like him.

As mamas only son, Ruth's disobedient husband, Travis's caring father, and Beneatha's aggressive brother, Walter provides the audience with the perspective of how the twentieth- century African- American male lived. He is the typical man of the family who struggles to support it and who tries to discover new, and better ideas maintain the on-going life of this family. The many things that try to stop Walter from providing what he feels is the best alternative for his family, frustrate him. He believes that money will solve all of their problems, but he is rarely successful with money.

Walter often fights and argues with Ruth, Mama, and Beneatha. Far from being a good listener, he does not seem to understand that he must pay attention to his family members concerns in order to help them. Eventually, he realizes that he cannot raise the family up from poverty

There isnt hardly anybody around who can say their lives havent

been influenced by computers. Computers have all but taken over

society as we know it. Everywhere you look, computers have greatly

improved our lives. It can be as simple as going through a carwash, a

Custom Essays on Computers

computer processes the information that we feed it and adjusts the

machine accordingly to give us the particular wash we paid for.

Computers also play an extremely complicated role in one of the things

that everybody uses in their everyday lives, our cars. Most people

dont realize how much our cars have been taken over by technology,

until they get the bill after one of these computers go out. Just

about everything in a new car is controlled by a computer, a computer

will read and recognize your driving patterns and adjusts how and when

the transmission should shift from gear-to-gear so that you, as the

driver, will get maximum performance from your car. In some vehicles,

a computer will adjust how high the car rides from the ground. It

lowers the car at highway speeds to make it more aerodynamic which

will give you better gas mileage and makes the car easier to handle at

these high speeds. The latest computer technology is an on-board

navigational computer that will direct the driver into using the

fastest and most efficient way to get to the destination. It will

plan your route around any construction, traffic jams, and even

inclement weather. If and when these cars break down, a mechanic will

simply ask the cars on-board computer what is wrong, rather than

having to go through a series of complicated troubleshooting tests.

As I have clearly stated, computers have greatly improved something

that most of us use every day.

Another advantage of the computer that until recently I was

unfamiliar with is the role of the computer in the workplace. I have

worked at various jobs in my short existence on this earth. For the

most part, the most technologically advanced any of them were was

merely punching prices into a cash register, hardly a state-of-the-art

process by any means. Most of the jobs I have worked at were more

labor-oriented jobs, so I suppose that is why this is kind of a change

for me. These days I wait tables at a local bar and grill. I have

worked at restaurants like this before, but none of those places were

dependent on a computer like this one is. For example, at my old job,

when we took orders for drinks we scribbled it down on a sheet of

paper and then threw it at the bartender along with another ten people

so he could try and figure out just what the heck was written down.

This process seemed to take forever. Now all I have to do is go to

the computer, press a couple of buttons, and voila, the bartender gets

a clear printout of what needs to be made. And with any luck, the

drinks should be ready by the time I get to the bar. Needless to say

I like the method of using the computer much better than the old way

of writing everything down. This has also solved a lot of problems of

the same kind in the kitchen, also. As having the experience of being

a cook at one time, there was nothing that got on my nerves more than

trying to read the handwriting of someone who had to take an order in

a room filtering out more than 150 people making noise while trying to

jot everything down as fast as they can. As you can probably imagine,

this turns into a lose-lose situation for the people trying to work

through all of this. The cook is mad at the server for not being able

to write the order in plain English. The server is mad at the cook

for always being so critical and not worrying about themselves.

Eventually the person who is effected most by all of this is the

customer. What happens is the cook finally just doesnt care about

the order anymore and doesnt prepare a good meal, or the server gets

ticked off at the cook and ends up taking out their frustration on the

customer who doesnt get the quality of service that they deserve.

That is a whole bunch of problems that came out of just one tiny

little detail, that being not writing the order clearly enough. At my

current job, when a food order is taken, the same process is followed

by simply pushing the right series of buttons for what the customer

ordered. After this, a copy of the order is printed out in the

kitchen and is very easy to read. This makes it hard for the cook to

blame anybody else other than themselves for any problems that occur.

There never has to be any guessing games as to what the server was

trying to write down. But there are a few drawbacks to this system,

it seems that every computer is a little bit different and you cant

expect everybody in the workplace to become an expert on that

particular computer that is there. Henry David Thoreaus statement

saying men have become tools of their tools can definitely true in

this case. I have had it happen to me where I accidentally hit the

wrong button at the wrong time and the computer froze up. One time it

took me almost ten minutes to figure out what I had done wrong and fix

it. I had truly been at the mercy of technology at this time. All in

all I definitely feel that, in this case, a business is better off

using technology than going without it. On the basis of his

statement, Thoreau would probably disagree with me saying that this

technology is only the beginning. Before long there will be robots

and computers waiting the tables, cooking the food, and mixing the

drinks. He might suggest that eventually only one person will be

needed to run such a business, and that person is the one who supplies

all of the capital and buys the equipment. Then the place would just

run itself, while that person sits back and reaps the benefits. My

counter-argument would be this, so long as there are people in this

world who are interested in getting the most value for their dollar,

they would rather be at a place where they are treated like a person,

by a person. The alternative option is this, every time you want or

need a service, you will become nothing more than an invoice number.

You will talk to a computer about what ever is your current need, and

then if you are lucky, that need will be quickly satisfied. The truth

is nobody really wants to be an invoice number. So as far as society

being taken over by technology completely, I cant imagine that will

ever happen. I believe that we as a society will use technology to

every advantage possible, but it will always be used to our advantage

and it will always improve the quality of our lives.

We need to be sure that we stick with our values and make sure

that technology doesnt get out of hand. A lot of people disagree on

what exactly is too much technology. In my opinion we can always keep

adding technology to our everyday lives as long as the technology

isnt manipulated to the point that we have to take advantage of and

exploit other people in order to get ahead. I know it would be great

if everything worked out that way, but as we all know we dont live in

a perfect world and no matter what the scenario is, somebodys toes

have to get stepped on if anybody wants to rise to the top.

Another problem I can see arising is people letting technology

overcome their lives and eventually they will be overcome by laziness.

Erich Fromm was also aware of this problem when he wrote his essay

Work in an Alienated Society by stating the following It is not

difficult to recognize the widespread longing for the state of

complete laziness and passivity. Our advertising appeals to it even

more than to sex. It is amazing what kind of perspective Fromm had

on the subject considering he wrote the essay in 155. A lot of

people today are willing to spend huge sums of money on something that

will make a task easier and effortless, whether or not it will do a

quality and efficient job. As long as they dont have to use up too

much energy, the consumer is happy they got the job done, never mind

the fact it cost them hundreds of dollars to buy the equipment to get

the job done easier.

As far as computers in the workplace go, in my example of having

computers put to use in a restaurant doesnt cause the workers to

become lazy. It enables the business to operate more efficiently, and

that is something that everybody looks forward to, including the

owners, managers, employees, and most importantly the customers. The

morale of the employees where I work now is ten times greater than

that of where I worked before. Simply put, the environment that I get

to work in is fun. It may sound strange to give computers all of the

credit but I believe that having computers in this setting have

contributed to an all-around better business which has shown up in the

revenue generated by this particular business.

As much as I have praised the presence of computers in a

restaurant setting there are a few setbacks, of which are greatly

outnumbered by the positive aspects. The most prominent setback

incurred by these computers that I have seen is the training-in

process. As I said earlier everyone of these computers is different,

so even if you have had prior experience with computers in a similar

setting, you will be basically starting from scratch when it comes

time to learn a new computer. Personally I have been at my present

job for about a month and-a-half and I am still learning how to use

the computer. It seems like every day I learn something new on that

thing and, at times, I think it has a personal vendetta against me.

But on the other hand, about 5% of the time it helps me to do my job

better. It would be interesting to see how many complaints I would

have if I had to write out everybodys orders and bills. With my

handwriting, chances are I wouldnt have lasted a week in that place.

In todays society, the main issue of technology is ethics,

people are afraid that technology can be corrupting, and with good

reason. However, I think that people feel this way because they are

the generation that has to adapt to this technology. Tomorrows

generation will have a totally different attitude about the subject,

they will be accustomed to technology in the workplace because it will

have been there ever since they entered the job market. All in all,

everybody will learn to use technology in each of their professions

and it will make this world a better place to live.

December 7, 141 will be remembered in history as one of the most phenomenal days ever to take place in the United States. The attack on Pearl Harbor came as no surprise to President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his military advisors. It was a key element in drawing the United States to fight in World War II. This day will forever be incredibly significant, especially because our President at the time was keeping secrets from the supposed democratic American public. Pearl Harbor was just what the President needed to have a reason to get our country involved in the war. I support this theory of President Roosevelt having the knowledge of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Sufficient evidence shows that Franklin D. Roosevelt knew he was in control of the situation and went behind the backs of the American people in getting the nation involved in one of the mass destruction of World War II. President Roosevelt was planning all along to use Pearl Harbor as the element pulling the United States into fighting in the war. Speaking with "[…] Admiral Richardson, President Roosevelt explained that the Fleet was being kept in the mid-Pacific because its presence helped to deter Japanese aggression in the Far East. This statement must have been made to help the President [because] he could not tell the Admiral the real reason for retaining the Fleet in Hawaii" (Theobald ). The President obviously had his plans for becoming involved in the war. Unfortunately, he had to deceive many people to do so.

Sixty years have passed since Pearl Harbor, and extensive research has been done on trying to figure out the truth behind Japans sudden attack. Author of Pearl Harbor The Facts Behind The Fiction, James Perloff states that "research has not only shown Washington knew in advance of the attack, but deliberately withheld its foreknowledge from our commanders in Hawaii in the hope that the 'surprise' attack would catapult the U.S. into World War II."

There is an opposition to my argument in which they say that Franklin D. Roosevelt was a good president and never kept any secrets about Pearl Harbor from the American public. This is a strong argument because it would make sense that the President would be loyal to the people of the United States. He did not have good intentions in keeping a secret about Pearl Harbor from the people. There is a good argument for the opposition made in a library journal saying that "Roosevelt knew the war was coming, but he wanted to fight Germany, not Japan, and it is not credible that he would have allowed his Pacific fleet to be ravaged" (Itkin). This is understandable that Roosevelt would not want to fight with Japan. If he did know about their attack, he would not have had so many people at Pearl Harbor. The Americans stationed there were not prepared for battle, and President Roosevelt would not have let Japan get away with that.

Another strong argument for my opposition shows that Franklin D. Roosevelt did not know about the attack of Pearl Harbor. This is our own country's racism. This argument states that our racism to Japan blinded us to the reality that they could attack us. The leaders and strategists of our nation did not believe that Japan had the brains, willpower, or strength to carry out an attack against us. These beliefs did not help us in preventing the attack on Pearl Harbor. The President was along with the rest of the people in believing that Japan could never dream of attacking the United States.

Custom writing service can write essays on Pearl Harbor

In a rebuttal to my opposition's argument, it can be argued that Franklin D. Roosevelt did in fact know about the attack on Pearl Harbor before it happened. The President needed something to happen that would pull the United States into fighting in the war. Even though he did not care about fighting with Japan, he just saw this as an excuse to get involved in war. Roosevelt was willing to sacrifice his Pacific fleets at Pearl Harbor in order to become involved. There is strong evidence supporting the fact that President Roosevelt knew about the attack before it happened. Perloff states in his article "The Facts Behind the Fiction," that "on October , 141, the War Department decoded a Tokyo-to-Honolulu dispatch instructing the Consul General to divide Pearl Harbor into five specified areas and to report the exact locations of American ships therein." This event helps support the fact that the United States government knew about Pearl Harbor before it happened. For some reason, Franklin D. Roosevelt became aware of the planned attacks and decided to keep them a secret from the American people.

Evidence has also been found that supports the idea that Franklin D. Roosevelt tried to provoke Japan into attacking the United States at Pearl Harbor. It was obviously the easiest place for Japan to attack. They would know that nobody would be prepared for a sudden attack out at Pearl Harbor. Here was an easy location for the Japanese to attack the Pacific fleets of the United States. It is stated in an article by James Perloff that "Oliver Lyttleton, British Minister of Production, stated in 144 'Japan was provoked into attacking America at Pearl Harbor. It is a travesty of history to say that America was forced into the war'" (Perloff). This was a high possibility considering how badly Roosevelt wanted to get involved in war. He was a good president, and needed an excuse to get what he wanted because it was not what the American public wanted.

This argument of whether President Franklin D. Roosevelt knew about the attack or not is an extremely controversial issue, of which will be studied and researched throughout the future. It has been sixty years since the famous attack, yet there is still research being performed to find reasons as to why it happened. Roosevelt used the attack by the Japanese on Pearl Harbor as his excuse to become involved in fighting in World War II. He strived to be loyal to his people, and actually ended up deceiving them by not preparing Pearl Harbor for the sudden attack. His Pacific fleets were sitting targets for the Japanese fighters. All the American battleships were at Pearl Harbor as well, and these are the best fighting ships to have. They were destroyed. Evidence strongly supports the notion that President Roosevelt knew about the attack on Pearl Harbor before it happened.

Chapter 5 Public Opinion

America is a diverse country. Different cultures, races, region etc co-exist. In a country with many "public opinions" it is easier for the formation and cleavages in public attitudes. The formation of smaller groups in turn creates cleavages with other groups. This increases the diversity in public attitudes. The three areas where this is evident are religion, gender, and education. These three factors are few of many factors that account for the formation of political attitudes also contributes to the cleavages in public opinions.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Political Analysis of Public Opinion?

Firstly, America is a place with various religions. Factors like social status and religious traditions unite a certain religion or a group of religion. But this also increases the cleavage in political attitude with the other religions. This can be seen through the analysis of the political culture of the Jews. As Jews immigrated to America, they were poor and often were subject to racial bias. This made them join the Democratic Party and the liberal party. Also their tradition of social justice and personal rectitude helped them unite and form similar cliques. This made the Jews liberal in economically and socially. While this happened to the Jews, the Protestants became more socially conservative. From this we can see that when one religion united, the cleavage between them and other religions increased.

Secondly, gender is also an important example of "formation and cleavage" of political attitudes. The male and female usually formed their own political attitudes that happen to be the antitheses of each other. This resulted in the cleavages between male and female attitudes. An example can be seen in the 10's and 140's. In this period of time, alcohol and war was the hot topic. Majority of men supported liquor and war while the majority of the women supported ban on alcohol and not getting involved in a war. Events like this made the women unite and vote for the Republican Party. Same thing happened during elections, women mostly voted for women candidates. Thus, creating a formation in public opinion among women but also forming a cleavage with opinions of men.

Lastly, education also helps us spot the formation and cleavage in political attitudes. Education, especially college, made the people more liberal. The country had more conservatives and fewer liberals. But the colleges have helped the formation of the liberal groups but it has raised the cleavages between the conservatives and liberals. The colleges were like catalyst that increased the percentage difference by creating more liberals.

The three areas religion, gender, and education are just a few examples of how factors that account for the formation also contributes to the cleavages in public opinion. Other examples include social class, region etc. These prove to us the diversity of public opinions in America. It indicates to us that, ideas of one group might oppose the idea of other, forming public opinions and cleavages.

Please note that this sample paper on Political Analysis of Public Opinion? is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Political Analysis of Public Opinion?, we are here to assist you. The place I love the most is the barbershop. In the barbershop what fascinated me the most was how many different people would come to get the different haircuts. The barbershop is a place I could can go and meet all kinds of different people. It is also a place where you can learn to play checkers, talk about sports, and gossip too.

Growing up in Philadelphia, my father would always take me with him to the shop; I was about five years old when he started showing me around. I remember my first experience, it was during the summer, and we woke up about 6 a.m. to open the shop at 8 a.m. It was a very exciting time for me because it was my first time going to the shop. This would be the first of many trips to the barbershop. My first thought was that I would have a lot of fun, but I soon found out it wasn't that exciting at all. I was very bored because there wasn't much for a five year old to do.

Their conversations all had adult themes. They talked about boxing, which mainly centered around Muhammad Ali. They also talked about women. Then the older men would sit around and play checkers all day. That is where I learned to play checkers. The older men showed me the different moves in checkers.

Things would start to change as I got older, I would began to understand what the barbershop was all about. When I turned seven, my father started allowing me to cut my uncle's hair. I would cut my uncle's head bald. That was a great experience for me; I really enjoy cutting my uncle hair. I would cut his hair at lease once a week. Then I would start to shine shoes at the barbershop. By shining shoes, I earned money that helped me buy things that I wanted. One Christmas eve, I earned about two hundred dollars shining shoes. That was the most memorable Christmas of my childhood.

Write your My barbershop experience research paper

My father helped me set up a little store on the outside of the barbershop. Some of the things I sold were sodas, candy, gum, and potato chips. My father took me to the store on Mondays to buy the things for the store. I would stay outside for about three or four hours a day. Business was great because it was summer, and everybody was out. I earned about fifty dollars a week. Over all, my childhood experiences were good.

The Barbershop has changed a lot over the years. When I visit the barbershop in the area today, there are no shoeshine stands. Vending machines have replaced the need for the little store, supplying the needs of customers today. I am not as bored today when I visit the barbershop. I have made many friends at the two barbershops that I visit today. We play pool, spades, and video games. Sometimes we play checkers, and I remember the old days when I first experienced the barbershop.

My barbershop experience was very good because it is where I learned to play checkers and to have conversations about different sports. I am also grateful for my father who let me cut hair in the shop. I was glad to have that little store and to be able to shine shoes in the barbershop. It helped me to buy some of the thing I needed. Still today, I am apart of the barbershop. We play pool, spades and video games. Although some things have change, the barbershop is still a great place to visit.

" How Not to Use the Fax Machine and the Cellular Phone"

Umberto Eco is a very interesting guy, but at the same time he is very complex. Born in 1 Eco is a professor of semiotics at The University of Bologna, Italy. It seems to me that the title talks about fax machines and cellular phones, but to me the article is really about something else. That lets me know that the author wants the readers to use their brains when reading his passages. Also the title "How Not to Use the Fax Machine and the Cellular Phone" is very odd. Usually people tell you how to use a fax machine or cellular phone instead of how not to use it, so that makes me think a bit.

Umberto Eco seems to be an old, irritated rich man. I think he doesn't like it when non-upper class could people afford some of the same expensive things that the wealthy could afford. He clearly states it when he gives the example about the motorcars. He talked about how when the wealthy people could afford to use the motorcar it was fast to get from point A to point B, but not when the masses could afford it. It took double the time to get to the destination.

Eco

Umberto also thinks that some people use their cell phone to show off. I came to the conclusion that if you are not using you fax machine or cellular phone for business Umberto thinks you're playing with it. Yes some people abuse the cellular phone and fax machine privileges, but majority of the people that use them are using them for an important reason

Death Penalty Argument There are four main reasons for punishment rehabilitation (to return someone to a former status), reformation (to re-form or re-create an individual), deterrence (to deter others or to deter the person punished), and retribution (an eye for an eye). The death penalty is a punishment to a person in which the person is put to death for a very serious crime they have committed, usually when they take another persons life. Our state and federal legislators have created laws that specifically identify which crimes a person commits that can be punishable by the death penalty. The death penalty is seen as a deterrent to increasing and more serious crime. If members of the society know that if they commit serious crimes they could be put to death for it, they are less likely to commit these crimes. However, there is great disagreement in our society about whether it is a true deterrent to crime or not. When I think of the thousands of inhabitants of Death Rows in the prisons in this country...my reaction is Whats taking us so long? Lets get that electrical current flowing. Drop those pebbles now! Whenever I argue this with friends who have opposite views, they say that I dont have enough regard for the most marvelous of miracles - human life. Just the opposite Its because I have so much regard for human life that I favor capital punishment. Murder is the most terrible crime there is. Anything less than the death penalty is an insult to the victim and society. It says...that we dont value the victims life enough to punish the killer fully. Many abolition supporters quote, the death penalty is not a deterrent. Many abolitionist also add there is NO deterrent for a murderer (there will always be a few individuals that are up for a challenge no matter what the consequences are for their crimes in my opinion). Since jail is neither a deterrent in essence, according to those that wish to abolish the death penalty, how long before jail time for murderers would be their next punishment to target for removal from our books. One argument states that the death penalty does not deter murder. Dismissing capital punishment on that basis requires us to eliminate all prisons as well because they do not seem to be any more effective in the deterrence of crime. Others say that states which do have the death penalty have higher crime rates than those that dont, that a more severe punishment only inspires more severe crimes. I must point out that every state in the union is different. These differences include the populations, number of cities, and yes, the crime rates. Strongly urbanized states are more likely to have higher crime rates than states that are more rural, such as those that lack capital punishment. The states that have capital punishment have it because of their high crime rate, not the other way around. Abolitionists claim that there are alternatives to the death penalty. They say that life in prison without parole serves just as well. Certainly, if you ignore all the murders criminals commit within prison when they kill prison guards and other inmates, and also when they kill decent citizens upon escape, like Dawud MuMin who was serving a 48-year sentence for the 17 murder of a cab driver when he escaped a road work gang and stabbed to death a storekeeper named Gadys Nopwasky in a 188 robbery that netted $4.00. Fortunately, there is now no chance of MuMin committing murder again. He was executed by the state of Virginia on November 14, 17. Another flaw is that life imprisonment tends to deteriorate with the passing of time. Take the Moore case in New York State for example. In 16, James Moore raped and strangled 14-year-old Pamela Moss. Her parents decided to spare Moore the death penalty on the condition that he be sentenced to life in prison without parole. Later on, thanks to a change in sentencing laws in 18, James Moore is eligible for parole every two years! If Pamelas parents knew that they couldnt trust the state, Moore could have been executed long ago and they could have put the whole horrible incident behind them forever. Instead they have a nightmare to deal with biannually. Ill bet not a day goes by that they dont kick themselves for being foolish enough to trust the liberal sham that is life imprisonment and rehabilitation. (According to the US Department of Justice, the average prison sentence served for murder is five years and eleven months.) Putting a murderer away for life just isnt good enough. Laws change, so do parole boards, and people forget the past. Those are things that cause life imprisonment to weather away. As long as the murderer lives, there is always a chance, no matter how small, that he will strike again. And there are people who run the criminal justice system who are naive enough to allow him to repeat his crime. Abolitionists claim that the death penalty is un-constitutional by quoting the eighth amendment which forbids cruel and unusual punishment. Cruel and unusual has never been defined by our founding fathers, but lets examine the issue anyway. Where does the Supreme Court stand on the cruel and unusual claim of the abolitionists? In several cases the Justices of the Supreme Court have held that the DP is not cruel and/or unusual , and is in fact, a Constitutionally acceptable remedy for a criminal act. There are those who insist that the Constitution does not support the death penalty. This is simply not true. The Fifth Amendment states "No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." There is a popular saying that only God has the right to take a human life. But nowhere in the bible is this statement confirmed. Indeed, Genesis 6, God states Whoever shedeth man's blood, by man shall his blood shall be shed. Also, in the time when God was giving His law to Moses and His people, He said, He who strikes a man so that he dies shall surely be put to death. Exodus 11 Moreover you shall take no ransom for the life of a murderer who is guilty of death, but he shall surely be put to death. Numbers 51 So you shall not pollute the land where you are; for blood defiles the land, and no atonement can be made for the land, for the blood that is shed on it, except by the blood of him who shed it. Numbers 5 The whole reason why nations and governments exist is to defend their decent citizens from vicious criminals. When it fails to do that, they become of little use to its citizens. When a society ignores their moral duty to defend the safety and security of their decent citizens and leaves them at the mercy of violent criminals, they are not being civilized, they are being negligent. I am certain that there will come a time when all the nations in the world will be forced to agree after decades of experience on this issue, that capital punishment, like the military and the police force and taxes, is an inevitable and unavoidable consequence of every civilized society and it will no longer be a question of whether or not a nation should have the death penalty, but rather how it should be used. While I believe that prompt and consistent executions would have a deterrent effect, there remains one great virtue, even for infrequent executions. The recidivism rate for capital punishment is zero. No executed murderer has ever killed again. You cant say that about those sentenced to prison, even if you are an abolitionist. By giving a murderer the death penalty, we are treating him with the same respect he treated his victim. We are giving them what they deserve, exactly what they did to the victim. If someone kills and only receives 15 years in jail, this is stating that the victim's life was only worth 15 years. When in reality, the person's life was worth another person's life. Even life in jail, is still giving the murderer partial freedom, this freedom is to live. By taking his life, he is losing freedom, which is exactly what he took away from his victim. Equal treatment and justice demands a punishment that matches the crime. Capital punishment for premeditated murder provides exactly this. The death penalty is the only punishment, if any that will deter anyone from committing such the horrible crime of murder. The thing that most people fear most is death. If anything will stop the murderer from killing it is the thought that he might die himself. If he kills a victim, he kills himself. This if any will be the only hope that less murders will occur. Any other punishment is reversible, death isn't. My group feels that the killing of another human being without reason is cold and cruel, and should never go without an equal sentence. To murder someone shows that you have no conscience and are very liable to do the same thing again, if you were to get the chance. There is no way of guaranteeing that the convict will never kill again, he could be let out on bail or escape from jail. The murderer will kill and kill until he is caught again. With the death penalty time, money, and lives would've been saved. As it states in the Bible "Whosoever shedeth the man's blood by man shall his blood be shed." The Old Testament, Genesis 6 This states that if a man kills, by man he shall die. The Bible also states "Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth, hand for a hand, foot for a foot." The Old Testament, Numbers 14 This states that whatever was done to the victim shall be done to the culprit. I believe murderers should be put to death because the person's life who they have taken away has also affected and destroyed the lives of the person's family and friends. These people will be put at ease knowing that justice was served to the murderer and that he is now dead. These are just a few of the reasons that lead me to believe that the death penalty is not only a suitable sentence for a convicted murderer but a must! It all comes down to one thing if someone kills an innocent person, the same act he has done deserves to be done to him.

The death penalty is an ancient practice that has, in recent years, become a very controversial issue. The death penalty is a vital means of punishment that must be practiced. The founders of the United States practiced the death penalty even more than we do today. They certainly did not prohibit capital punishment when they wrote the Constitution. The Eighth Amendment to the Constitution states "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." This is not referring to capital punishment. "Cruel and unusual punishment" refers to torture, not death. The Framers would not prohibit cruel and unusual punishment if that included death because they exercised the death penalty. Amendment Five states that no person shall be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law. According to this amendment, a person can be deprived of his life if there is a proper trial and legal proceedings. The death penalty has also been shown to deter murder. If a murderer is executed, than obviously he won't kill anyone again, and a person is less likely to murder if he knows that he would be executed for it. Life in prison is certainly not comparable to the death penalty. Parole laws are constantly changing and many murderers have been let out of prison on parole, and they kill someone else. Many people argue that the death penalty is murder. They say that we are killing someone to show that killing people is wrong. Murder is defined as the unlawful killing of a person with malice and forethought. Therefore, murder cannot be used to describe executions since the death penalty is under the law. Not only does capital punishment discourage murder, but it is a lawful and Constitutional method of punishing murderers.

Comparisons/Contrasts between The Giver and Gattaca

There are many differences and similarities between the novel "The Giver," and the movie "Gattaca." Right from the start, you can tell that both communities are very controlling over their people. The Giver is more controlling, but Gattaca has more demanding rules. Some of the same rules and regulations apply in both communities. You don't really have privacy in either community. They know your past, and in some cases like Gattaca, they know your future. Another similarity is discrimination. Both

communities discriminate people because their simply different, or "invalid." Your whole life is watched upon and in a lot of cases, controlled. The Giver told you what job you would have based on what best fits your category, and Gattaca just has restrictions based upon your genes. They pretty much just limited your choices because of something you have absolutely no control over. Some differences are; in Gattaca you could choose to have a baby on your own, in The Giver, you were given only two children. If you weredifferent or perhaps a twin, you would be released in The Giver. In Gattaca they knew the exact day you were going to die, and for what reason too.

There were also similarities and differences in the characters of the novel and the movie. For instance, Vincent and Jonas. They both had a destination out of their

community, although they were two different places. Jonas wanted to go "Elsewhere," and Vincent wanted to go to "Titan." They both broke the rules of their community to do this, but they both also succeeded. They both left their families behind, and haven't seen them since. Don't be fooled. They weren't twins. They had differences too. Jonas was a child, Vincent was an adult. Vincent saved his brother who almost drowned, and Jonas saved Gabriel (not really his brother) from being released. They were different from everyone in their community but Vincent was really ill, and Jonas was not.

Another group of people who are alike and different are Jerome and the Giver. They were both isolated from everyone in their community because of who they were or

what was wrong with them. One thing is for sure, they both lived for a purpose. After they had succeeded in doing so, they both killed themselves. Jerome and the Giver had a

special bond with another one of the characters that ended up growing to love. They gave a gift of themselves to make someone else happy, and that's another thing they shared.

They were different in what they gave away though. The giver gave away memories of the world since the beginning of time. Jerome however, gave his identity.

The book, "The Giver," and the movie, "Gattaca," were alike and different. But there's one thing that made them identical. That was that in both the movie and the book, the main idea is that if there's a will, there's a way. Also that anyone can exceed their expectations.
