The perception of order in chaos is a function of linguistics, as it is of all sciences. At rare times the development of order becomes and act of creation pure and simple. It was so when J.R.R. Tolkien produced, out of his vocation of linguistics, the literature of Middle-Earth The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings.

Language is so integral to culture that a linguist can reconstruct a culture from its language just as a biologist can reconstruct an animal from a bone. Tolkien's Production of the invented language called Quenya compelled him to depict the Elvish cultures of The Silmarillion.

Tolkien spent much of his youth involved in learning, studying, and creating languages. His mother introduced him to Latin, French, and German. While at school, he was taught or taught himself Greek, Middle English, Old English (Anglo-Saxon), Old Norse (Old Icelandic), Gothic, modern, and medieval Welsh, Finnish, Spanish, and Italian. Other languages of which he had a working knowledge included Russian, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, and Lombardic.

The critical influence that directed Tolkien's creative genius toward the works for which he is best known occurred when, at the age of twenty-one, he read the old English poem Crist by Cynewulf. Two lines stood out vividly

Eala Earendel engla beorhast

Ofer middangeard monnum sended.

Hail Earendel, brightest of angels,

Above Middle-Earth sent unto men.

The imagery of an angelic light sent purposefully to mankind is powerful. In these two lines are three elements essential to Tolkien's works a light called Earendel, its purposeful sending to men, and the word Middle-earth.

Middle-earth is an ancient designation for Europe or the known world of Europeans. It is universal for peoples to see their environment, large or small, as central. Medieval English spoke of the known lands as middle-erde of meddel-earth. In Old English the word was middan-geard.

In 114, after reading the Crist, Tolkien wrote his first poem about Earendil, as he spelled the name, and during the following two years began to combine the theme of Earendil with an invented language, based on Finnish, which as to become Quenya Elvish. He began to write poetry in this language. Humphrey Carpenter records a segment of an early poem for which no translation is given

Ai lintulinda Lasselanta

Pilingeve suyer nalla ganta

Kuluvi ya karnevalinar

V'ematte singi Eldamar

The poem contains the elements Eldamar and Valinor essential to The Silmarillion. It apparently begins with a characteristic Elvish poignancy "O swiftly sing of the Fall of Leaves."

Elvish languages continued to grow and flourish, and the tales that would later become The Silmarillion began to take shape. Of these languages, Tolkien said, "The 'Sindarin', a Gray-Elven language, is in fact constructed deliberately to resemble Welsh phonologically and to have a relation to High-Elven (Quenya) to that existing between British (properly so-called) and Latin. All the names in the book, and the language, are of course constructed, and not at random." The book referred to was The Lord of the Rings which is not in fact a trilogy (the three books are not complete stories in themselves) and was not considered so by Tolkien. However they were created, the languages are certainly not random. They lend to Tolkien's works a unique dimension of realism
