In the play Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, Macbeth constantly declines in his level of morality. His character starts off a loyal, faithful, and honorable subject. According to Newton's First Law of Motion, Macbeth should remain this way unless otherwise influenced. "An object at rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force." Macbeth's character changes from good to evil when three witches, his own ambition, and Lady Macbeth influence him. The play begins with thunder and lightning suggesting a presence of evil. Three witches inform the audience that they are there to meet with Macbeth, Thane of Glamis. The scene changes to a sergeant informing Duncan, King of Scotland, of the results in the battles his country has recently fought. Duncan is informed that Ireland and Norway have been defeated. Macbeth is depicted as a fearless fighter who is greatly respected "For brave Macbeth - well he deserves that name" (1., 16). On their way home from battle Macbeth and Banquo, Thane of Scotland, encounter the witches in the woods. Before Macbeth hears the witches' prophesies, he has no desire to go against Duncan. The witches then prophesy that Macbeth will be made Thane of Cawdor, and then King. They also prophesy that Banquo's kin will be king, though he himself will not. The mens' reaction is one of surprise, curiosity, and doubt. When Macbeth finds out that he has been named Thane of Cawdor from two of the kings' messengers, he is intrigued as one of the two prophesies have come true. However, he feels that he can become King without intervening in fate. Macbeth says, "If chance will have me king, why, chance may crown me without my stir" (1., 144-145). He later meets with the King, and demonstrates that he remains grateful, modest, and loyal. Though he shows no signs of ill will towards Duncan, thoughts of being king do begin to dance in his mind.
When Macbeth returns to his castle, Lady Macbeth already has a plan to obtain the kingship. She heartlessly decides to kill Duncan during his stay with in their home. It is at this point that we see a significant change in the forces controlling Macbeth's direction. It is here that he begins to stray from the character we were first introduced to. The witches may have planted a seed, but Lady Macbeth was certainly watering and nurturing it. His only response to her proposal of murder is "We will speak further" (1.5, 70). From a brave soldier as depicted in earlier scenes, Macbeth now seems weak and helpless as he allows his wife to control his decision-making by attacking his masculinity and calling him a "coward" (1.7, 44). Next, we see Macbeth prepare for murder. He knows it is a great sin, but Lady Macbeth's persuasion overpowers him. Macbeth stabs and kills the king he was once loyal to in his sleep, and returns to his wife. He is very nervous and shook up, and begins to hear things. ". . . It cried 'Sleep no more!' to all the house; 'Glamis hath murdered sleep, and therefore Cawdor shall sleep no more'" (., 45-46). Macbeth's is on the road to evil. He harbors feelings of guilt and regret and does not appear confident in his decision.
Duncan's sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, are the rightful heirs to the kingship. Fearful for their lives they flee Scotland. Macbeth now easily assumes the thrown. His own ambition then pushes him to have his friend, Banquo, killed. Now we see an even darker side to Macbeth. He no longer appears anxious. He did not discuss any doubts, or feelings that he may have had at this point with Lady Macbeth. After the murder, however, Macbeth is mad with guilt when imagining Banquo's ghost. Macbeth has forces acting on him now that are too strong for him to fight. He continues on his way to destruction.

Macduff kills Macbeth and returns the crown to it's proper owner, Malcolm.
