His mood changes again when, "a bitter, wrathful and malignant smile was on his lips." These malicious and angry expressions further his mystifying character. He plans of ideas to ruin this marriage, which he thinks will be best for them all. This smile shows vileness towards Luzhin and what his family plans to do for him. Raskolnikov's calculating side is shown by these expressions he makes.

The emotions and expressions from reading his mother's letter prove his two-sided character. His crying, his beating heart, and confused brain portray his emotional side. His evil smile and distorted face reveal his other hateful character. Raskolnikov's dual personality makes him an individual who fights these two distinct yet conflicting feelings throughout the novel.
