Little is known about the first African American hero of the New World. He is believed to have been born into slavery around the year 17. Attucks has been described as a huge man "whose looks was (sic) enough to terrify any person(Lester)." He was the Massachusetts-born son of an African slave and a Natick Indian(Tellez).
