. The witches convey important information about the outcome of the civil war and where and how they plan to encounter Macbeth. This information also informs the reader of the power the witches possess and how their minds function.

Macbeth is described as an honorable hero who has saved his King various times from the mouth of danger. He is portrayed as a strong, virtuous man possessing both the determination and confidence needed to defeat his enemies. The soldier in simple terms depicted Macbeth as being invincible; a force that was too powerful for traitors such as Macdonwald and the Thane of Cawdor to face. "…but all's too weak; …Till he faced the slave;" (Kortes 1)

It is quite evident that Duncan is a very trusting, generous and grateful man. This is obvious as he does not view Macbeth's bravery as an act that must be bestowed upon the king but on the contrary he sees it as an act of loyalty that Macbeth chose to do. He is thus very grateful and generous in his praise. He also seems to be a fair ruler as he rewards both his generals for their loyalty.

Banquo views the witches' prophecies skeptically as he does not trust their authority and senses the evil that revolves around them. He does not appreciate the witches' paradox and is dissatisfied with their account of his future. This is perhaps another reason for his cynical beliefs. On the other hand, Macbeth is greatly influenced by what the witches have to say perhaps due to the fact he wants so badly for the prophecies to be true. His greed and ambition persuade him to trust the Weird Sisters and he is further convinced by the fulfillment of the first two prophecies.

When Macbeth is told of his future as King, his conscience immediately starts to break down as he thinks of murdering Duncan right away. This proves that he is in a state of confusion as he struggles with what is right and what is wrong, and the consequences of his actions. The reader realizes that though Macbeth may be very strong on the outside, in reality his character is very weak to temptation. Even at this point, Macbeth seems to be a good man as he is horrified by his own ideas.

Macbeth's asides reveals a side to his character that even he is not familiar with. He faces the conflict of man vs. self as he struggles to realize how far he is willing to go to achieve his ambitions. In the end, he ends up being so confused that he decides to leave his future to fate.
