Driving Mr. Albert, written by Michael Paterniti, is an extension of his award winning article. At first glance Driving Mr. Albert seems to be a very appealing premise, and a good read. However, upon reading the book I felt cheated in some way, almost as if I had read a Clancy novel, too much useless information, and not enough story. The novel does not function well as a travelogue, that part of the novel seems secondary to the saga of Einstein, Thomas Harvey and his Tupperware filled with brain sections, and the author's relationship with his girlfriend.
First of all, the novel does give us a few highlights of travel destinations along the road from New Jersey to California, like the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, a short history lesson and moral oration follow the brief description of the museum. However, Paterniti is often inconsistent with his approach to the travelogue; it is either too vague, or descriptive to the point of comedy. For example, in one section the author rambles quickly through "…we gas down into Oklahoma (through Tyrone, Hooker, Guymon, and Texhoma) and then the Texas Panhandle (edging the Rita Blanca National Grasslands, through Stratford, Dalhart, and Romero)…" , and then at other instances "The snow is nuclear-powered, driving horizontally, starring the windows with ice, piling up until the Skylark looks like a soap-flake duck float in a Memorial Day parade gone terribly wrong." . Moreover, Paterniti highlights visits to the science museum in Los Almos, Kansas City where they visit Harvey's ex-wife, and an interesting and enlightening visit with the poet William S. Burroughs and his penis shaped landing pad for aliens. The farther the trip develops the more it seems to become a Fast-food and cheap hotel guide for those taking a quick trip across the country. In the end, the travel is secondary to the story of Einstein.
The story of Einstein is the subject of many books, none of which I have read, therefore I was thrilled to learn about one of the greatest minds of all time. Paterniti again chooses to be cautious in his approach, not getting into very much detail about Einstein, yet giving enough to peak ones' interest and to show an alternate side of the scientist. For example, he discusses Einstein's letter to Roosevelt, and how it changed the world in a magnitude they could not possibly have understood, although implying that Einstein did. I only wish Paterniti would have delved further into how Einstein suffered through his decision to write the letter, and his thoughts after the strike on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, other than the simple quote "Oy vay" . This left me with a feeling of disappointment as I wanted to know about Einstein, I did not care to know that the brain sections "…feel squishy, weigh about the same as very light beach stones. We hold them up like jewellers, marvelling at how them seem less like a brain than-what?-some kind of snack food, some kind of energy chunk for tri-athletes" . I felt resentful for being led astray from the legend of Einstein.

Also disappointing were the sections of the novel relating to Harvey. Once again the author heightens our interest in a character who could be fascinating, then in no way gives us anything solid to digest. Harvey's actions are never really explored, just glanced over so as not to be judgemental, as anyone might be with a friend. Paterniti leaves the reader asking more questions about Harvey after reading the book, than they might have had before reading it.
The last facet of the novel is the relationship Paterniti has with his girlfriend; I could not care less for this part of the novel. I realize that this journey may have been about personal discovery, and may have helped him enhance his relationship understanding, nevertheless Paterniti either should have told us more about his relationship with Sara, or simply left most of it out. This part of the novel served no purpose to the story, it only deflected my attention.
In conclusion I would say that as travel literature this novel passed and failed at the same time. This book was not a very informative travelogue, but it would be literature to read while travelling. Also, the travel aspect of the novel appears to be secondary to the three other facets of the novel, although these should either have been expanded on further (the saga of Einstein, Thomas Harvey) or suppressed altogether (Paterniti's relationship with Sara). It is in my opinion that Paterniti should perhaps have been satisfied with his award winning article since it seems as though any added material does nothing for the overall concept but turn a great article into a mediocre novel.
