In the Disney rendition of the myth of Hercules there were a few reoccurring themes. One of these was the theme of heroes and villains. Another important theme is trying to belong.

The major theme that I noticed was theme of heroes and villains or protagonists and antagonists. In the movie, Hercules was the protagonist and Hades was the antagonist. Hercules tried to prove himself a true hero. In doing so he saved the lives of many people. Hercules saved many people in the city, tried to be prove himself helpful whenever possible, and he tried to save children who were trapped under rocks.

The children that Hercules saved were not children at all. They were Hades servants. Hades sent his servants to pose as children and then leave Hercules in a deathly situation. To save himself and all other bystanders Hercules had to slay a three-headed monster. Hades tried to kill Hercules when he was only an infant. Hades is without question the antagonist in the movie. He tries to kill Hercules several times. Hades tries to rid of Hercules because he is the only person who can stop him from taking over the world of the gods. This causes Hades to do many evil things to Hercules.

Hercules always felt that he did not belong. He never had many friends or even got along with many people. He always scared them off with his inhuman like strength. Hercules knew he was different but he could not find where he truly belonged. One day the couple he had always believed to be his true mother and father revealed to him that they believed he was the son of gods. Hercules found out that he truly was the son of gods, his father is Zeus and his mother is Hera. Hercules immediately wanted to return home. Hercules could not be with the gods because in an attempt to kill him Hades turned Hercules mortal.

Hercules could become and live again with the gods only if he proved himself a true hero. He knew he could not become a true hero without help. Hercules found the trainer of the gods, Phil and became his student. Under Phil's direction Hercules did many of his heroic tasks to become a god. These tasks were not enough for him to become a god. Hercules became a god only after he risked his own life to save that of another. Hercules wanted to save the woman he loved, Megara. After he saved her life Hercules then became immortal again and could live among the gods. Although this was what he originally wanted, Hercules realized that he did not wish to leave Megara. Instead he now wanted to remain mortal and live on Earth with Meg. He had finally found where he belonged.
