Dear George,

I am writing this letter to you to offer praise and commendations for your actions last month. It would have taken a great deal of courage and mental resolve to take Lennie's life, your friend of so many years. He died at the hands of his hero, his life-companion, and that is something few men would be unhappy about. I understand your feelings about the world, that society seems to be designed to prey on the weak, and that you and Lennie suffered most of all from this sad truth.

I know a bit about the two of you; both growing up in Auburn and you taking Lennie into your care after the passing of his Aunt Clara. The two of you shared the load of being lonely itinerant labourers, and kept your sanity and composure better than many. As you have said before, many men have no one who cares about them, and they become bitter and forlorn, but you and Lennie kept each other going. Good friendships can help people survive hard times. I can see people thought it was odd that you two travelled together, yet you always maintained your integrity and stood by Lennie, for which you should be proud. The two of you also had a future planned out get a small piece of land, keep chickens and rabbits and vegetables and live the life of freedom. This was Lennie's dream, but it became the model of the ideal future for both of you. You knew that the dream could never happen without Lennie, so the fact that you gave up that dream shows that you truly believed in the need to liberate Lennie from Curley's lynch mob.

I do think that Lennie's intellectual incapacity was the defining factor of both of your lives. He was always underestimating himself and killed many mice simply because he didn't know his own strength. This, the girl in Weed, the fight with Curley and the puppy that he 'broke' all showed how he was unable to control himself in situations when he panicked; he gripped tight and wouldn't let go. There was very little you or anyone else could have done to stop the events that took place in the barn, so you can't feel responsible for what happened.

Ultimately, for what Lennie did, there was no real alternative to Lennie's fate falling to Curley. Curley was even heard saying that he wanted to "Shoot for his guts … shoot the guts outta that big bastard …", and this would have been a terrible, painful death. The pack of men that were swept up in Curley's angry wake were coaxed into this mindset also, they were out to shoot him or lynch him and he would have been running in fear from dogs and men when he met his end. The alternative you provided put him in his 'happy place', where he dreamed about the wonders of the farm, living off the "Fatta the Lan'", and was imagining it in his mind when you pulled the trigger. He would have felt nothing, his final image being the fantasy of his own rabbits, his own place, the seemingly unattainable American dream. This course of action was the honourable one, especially considering Candy's sentiments regarding the death of his dog he wished he had done it himself, and ended the friendship bond on their own terms.

You protected Lennie well throughout most of your friendship, more so after the time when you played pranks on him, like when he nearly drowned in the river after you suggested he jump in. Though he did not grasp the direness of given situations most of the time, it was obvious that he respected you for the protection and care you granted him, and how you always pulled him out of bad situations. If Lennie were able to comment on the final turn of events, I think he would have understood your motives and appreciated that he were not left to the mercy of Curley.

As Slim told you, you had to do it, there was no way Curley would have spared him, and he died picturing the dream of a perfect life. I truly admire the courage you displayed that day.

Respectfully yours,
