"Triage shows us that the survivors of trauma often suffer simply because they have survived"

Survivor guilt is one of the themes present in the novel Triage by Scott Anderson. Anderson explores survivor guilt using the characters of Mark Walsh and Joaquin Morales. Survivors of trauma often suffer simply because they have survived means they suffer from survivor guilt. The guilt of a survivor is having a feeling of responsibility about the people or person who died. Mark felt this towards the death of his colleague Colin and Joaquin experienced it about his family.

After Colin's death in Kurdistan, Mark's physical and mental health declined. His legs got weaker and he couldn't accept that Colin was gone and Mark wouldn't tell anyone what happened. Anderson shows us that Mark suffers from survivor guilt after Colin's death by giving Mark denial. Mark lies to Elena and Colin's wife Diane about what really happened in Kurdistan. Elena asks Mark, "Why didn't Colin come back with you?" He replies, "I don't know." (p.40) Of course he knows, but at first, Anderson doesn't mention that Colin was the man with the severed feet at the Harir Cave or that Colin was the weight on Mark's back. So this makes the reader wonder about what has happened to Colin. When the reader discovers that Colin died beside Mark, the reader then asks themselves why Mark didn't just tell Elena and Diane straight up? This gives the impression that Mark doesn't want the people close to him to know the truth or Mark still can't accept the fact that Colin is dead.

To show how Mark overcomes this guilt Anderson writes by starting Mark's recovery with Joaquin when drawing a map on the living room wall (p.160).

Mark has a flashback about Colin and carrying him. Then Mark tells Elena, "I didn't want it to be true," after she asks, "Why, Mark?"(p.164). Mark's quote here proves his denial and lying and also begins his recovery. To recover Mark goes to Joaquin's home in Spain with Joaquin and Elena. Earlier in the novel Anderson gives Ahmet Talzani's view of death in war "There is no pattern to who lives and who dies in war. Most of us can't accept that." Mark was one of these people until he let his feelings and thoughts out to Elena and Joaquin. Anderson also writes that Mark's search for Carlos Perez was Mark trying to find his way back from the dead and Colin had never left him (p.5). Anderson sets the scene for Mark's farewell to Colin at a river similar to where Mark left him in Kurdistan. Mark lays flowers in the water and says, "Goodbye then." (p.4) to Colin.

Joaquin only experienced survivor guilt very briefly as he knew how to deal with it. Joaquin's experience was different to Mark's Joaquin lost family and friends and was all alone, Mark lost a colleague/friend but was not alone. Anderson gives us an indication of what Joaquin endured when he fled his home after the war began because the blood squads were coming. Joaquin tells Mark, "Either I accept this new life or I die." (p.18) So he accepted it and suffered little because his motto was, "The dead are not important at all. It is the survivors who are important." (p.158) What Anderson is implying here is that Joaquin knows how to deal with death and he helps Mark to believe this too.

Joaquin travels to New York as soon as Elena's mother told him about Mark. This shows that either wants to help Mark because he has experience in the field or he's looking for an excuse to see Elena. Joaquin says, "I came for you, Elena." So he really came for Elena but helped Mark as well. Here, the reader finds out the real reason for Joaquin coming to New York which I believe was because he still suffered from a little survivor guilt so he had to see Elena, his last living family member. In his study in Granada, Spain, he has heaps of photos of his dead relatives. Here, Anderson is attempting to convince us that Joaquin may be living in the past or he still suffers from survivor guilt or he wonders how easy it would be to be one of the people in the photographs not having to live alone with no relatives in a huge mansion.

Survivors of trauma suffer simply because they have survived because the dead don't suffer, they don't feel anything. It's the survivors, like Mark and Joaquin in Triage, that feel emotions, the guilt, mixed thoughts and a responsibility that maybe they could have stopped a death or saved a life. Anderson shows us this through Mark's denial, not accepting that death is random and Joaquin's desperation to see the only relative he's got left when she doesn't want to see him and the dead relatives he views photos of every day it would be easy to be the dead one, but it's the survivors who matter. Anderson also shows the gradual recovery of Mark using Joaquin's experience death in war is random, people die because they just do. Mark has to believe this in order to recover.
