Esteban decides, against Ferulas advice, to go to Tres Marias and try to turn it into a moneymaking estate. Esteban finds Tres Marias in ruins. Esteban spends all the money he had been saving for his marriage on Tres Marias.

• As soon as he has spare time on his hands, Esteban Trueba realizes that he has an enormous sexual appetite. He rapes a young virgin peasant girl, Pancha Garcia, whom he brings to live in the main house as his housekeeper and mistress.

• Pancha becomes pregnant, and Esteban loses interest in her. She leaves the main house, and Esteban begins raping other peasant girls. In a few years, Tres Marias becomes one of the richest properties in the region.

• Esteban becomes involved in politics with other landowners in the area. The other landowners also introduce Esteban to the local brothel, The Red Lantern. Although Esteban prefers to rape young girls, he does meet one prostitute he likes at the Red Lantern, Transito Soto. Thanks to a combination of rewards and intimidation, the Conservative Party wins the elections.

• Three days later, Esteban receives a letter from Ferula with the news that Dona Ester is dying. It has been years since Esteban has seen his mother. Esteban puts Pedro Segundo Garcia in charge of Tres Marias and leaves for the capital.

CHAPTER Clara The Clairvoyant

• Severo and Nivea call in all sorts of doctors to find out why Clara has stopped talking. Doctor Cuevas is unsuccessful. The Rumanian Rostipov, who peddles all sort of magical cures, is called in to examine her. Rostipov determines that Claras only problem is that she does not want to speak.

• Once Honorio the gardener tells Clara a dream he has had, which she interprets successfully, helping him to win eighty pesos gambling. The news circulates and soon everyone is asking Clara to interpret their dreams. Instead of losing her abilities as she gets older, as Nana had predicted, Clara becomes more clairvoyant. On her nineteenth birthday, Clara announces that she will soon be married to Rosas fianc.

• When Esteban asks Severo and Nivea if they have any daughters of marriageable age and condition, they have only Clara to offer him. They warn him of all of Claras eccentricities. Esteban concludes that none of these things posed any obstacle to bringing healthy, legitimate children into the world and asks to meet Clara.

Esteban tries everything to rid the property of the ants, including bringing in Mr. Brown, a midget gringo agricultural technician specializing in insecticides. After hearing that Mr. Browns method will take months to succeed, too long a time to save Tres Marias, in desperation they go to Pedro Garcia, who successfully rids Tres Marias of the ants.

• At Tres Marias, Clara becomes pregnant again, and they must return to the city so that she can have access to appropriate medical attention. Clara has a difficult pregnancy during which she stops speaking. Esteban is not comfortable in the house in the city filled with women, but he feels that they need his male presence. Toward the end of her term, Clara begins speaking again to announce that she will have twins named Jaime and Nicolas. Esteban is furious that one of them will not be named after him, and in a rage he goes off to the best brothel in the city, the Christopher Columbus.

• A few days later, Severo and Nivea del Valle die in a car accident, in which Niveas head is severed from her body. Everyone in the family tries to shelter Clara from the news because of her pregnancy. Clara finds out through her dreams and premonitions. Since rescuers were unable to locate Niveas head, she is buried without it, another fact that everyone tries to hide from Clara. Clara also however knew about the severed head and is determined to find it.

• The family continues to return to Tres Marias at various intervals, during which Blanca and Pedro Tercero Garcias love grows. Pedro Tercero Garcia also becomes increasingly involved in organizing for justice at Tres Marias.

• That winter, Ferula dies. The family learns of her death when Ferulas spirit comes to bid Clara farewell on her way out of this world. Clara is the only one who realizes what has happened. She whisks Esteban off with her to find, with the help of Father Antonio, Ferulas body.

• By the next summer, Pedro Tercero has also entered adolescence. The development of his body is accompanied by his growth as a revolutionary thinker.
