In Shakespeare's era, women possessed few political and private rights. Renaissance women were expected to remain silent, avoid political discussions, and stick to the duties of their husbands' households. Men were considered higher morally, intellectually, and physically, and women were subjugated to the will of men. Men were also considered more ambitious, firm, decisive, lucid, and refined than women of the time. In Macbeth, this world of male-dominance is both displayed and challenged through the characters of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Macduff, and Lady Macduffthe text introduces two opposite realities which lead to the question of what it means to be a man.

In the beginning of the play, before Duncan's murder, Macbeth is portrayed as a very masculine characterat least by the soldiers from the battlefield. Duncan refers to him as a "valiant cousin" and "worthy gentleman" (1..4) who, according to the Captain, "with his brandished steel/Which smoked with bloody execution,/Like Valour's minion carved out his passage…" (1..17-1). Macbeth's manliness cannot be questioned on the battlefield; Duncan and his men have no reason to suspect Macbeth of anything.

Macbeth's marriage to Lady Macbeth is a unique one, because of an evident reversal of gender roles. Lady Macbeth could not have been any more manly without actually being a man. It is clear that if Lady Macbeth hadn't influenced Macbeth in the way she did, Duncan's murder never would have occurred. Lady Macbeth manipulates Macbeth by questioning his manhood, and asks the gods to "unsex [her] here/And fill [her] from the crown to the toe topfull/Of direst cruelty…" (1.5.-41). In the same way Lady Macbeth questions Macbeth's manhood to persuade him to kill, Macbeth questions the manhood of Banquo's murderers. Lady Macbeth undoubtedly provides the brains and will behind her husband's plottings. Macbeth is plagued by his conscience, compassion, imagination, and sensitivityqualities that were considered feminine at the time. Lady Macbeth recognized and targeted these feelings in Macbeth, and she neither yields to him publicly as a political figure nor privately in the household. When she urges Macbeth to "look like th'innocent flower," (1.5.6) she uses a feminine metaphor to undermine Macbeth's conception of his own moral strength. Lady Macbeth's hunger for power is so great, she understands that the only way for her to gain the power of kingship is through a well-placed husband.

A clear reversal of gender roles is also apparent in the witches, for they are another source of evil in Macbeth. While Lady Macbeth provided the brains for the murder of Duncan, the weird sisters' prophecies encourage his violent behavior. Macbeth is reluctant to accept the fate foreseen in the witches' prophecies and is defeated in the endanother way women reign over men in the play.

Macduff and Lady Macduff's marriage, however, is quite the opposite. Lady Macduff assumes her political and private womanly duties of the time just as Lady Macbeth liberates herself of them. The epitome of a woman of her time, Lady Macduff is a truly domestic woman with two children whom she loves dearly. It is ironic that she was murdered in her own home, because she probably did not venture out of it into the political world, or any other. Her loyalty to her husband is undeniable; honest and pure, in control of her own destiny, she stands for love and for him.

Though Lady Macduff fits the stereotypical picture of a renaissance woman, she does possess some masculine characteristics that Lady Macbeth lacks. When faced with imminent murder, they react in dissimilar manners. When Birnam Wood descends upon her castle, Lady Macbeth ends her life and abandons Macbeth in a situation lacking both loyalty and love. On the contrary, Lady Macduff asks why she should "put up that womanly defense,/to say [she has] done no harm" (4..75-76) and thus does not deserve to die. She meets her end with dignity and couragea more masculine quality.

When compared to Macbeth, Macduff displays more of the male-oriented qualities of the time. While Macbeth succumbs to the pressures of his wife and the weird sisters, Macduff stands up for himself like a man. Upon hearing the news of his murdered wife and children, Macduff is grief stricken. Malcolm encourages him to "dispute it like a man," (4..) and convert his "grief into anger" (4..1-). Macduff snaps back that he shall, but he must also "feel it as a man" (4..4). A Renaissance man was characterized by one who not only acts, but acts with a passion. Macduff's actions are classified as masculine, and it is therefore not surprising that he left his wife and children to rid the "fiend of Scotland" (4..6) and save his nation.

For the most part, the characters in Macbeth do not fit the clear-cut gender roles that fit Shakespeare's world. Instead, the characters each displayed traits of the opposite sex. Lady Macbeth's and the witches' masculinity conquered that of Macbeth's, which led to the murder of Duncan and ultimately the fall of Macbeth himself.
