The multiplicity of approaches will be explored in terms of each approach's underlying philosophical assumptions, specifically with respect to the role of the human body in development. This tendency has led to a pervasive and deeply held prejudice in which adults' quite frequent reliance upon imagistic, kinaesthetic, and intuitive ways of knowing are cast off as "childish" or "regressive," etc., rather than integrated into a more comprehensive view of the mind. In this course, we will explore the main currents in Western developmental thinking, highlighting both strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully, in this course, we can construct together an alternative, more comprehensive account of human development than exists in extant developmental theorizing. Bold? Yes! Impossible? No!
