In the movie Kramer Vs. Kramer, divorce plays an important role in the life of a child and his father. The film looks at a different aspect of divorce from what society normaly would see by showing the father's point of view throughout the custody hearing.

The film is about a wife who leaves her unhappy marriage to fulfill her goal of making it on her own and having a career of her own. Along with leaving her husband, Joanna also leaves behind her five year old son Billy to be brought up by his father who he really has no relationship with. This is a perfect example of how families were put together in our early society. Due to the fact that the father had to bring home all the money, he never got a chance to really get to know his child. This is an important aspect in the rest of the film. After eighteen months, Joanna decides that she wants custody of Billy and takes the father, Ted to court. During the eighteen months that Joanna is gone, Billy and his father build a close relationship with each other. During the trial, the lawyer brings up the fact that Ted had no relationship to his son before his wife left, and that since his wife left he lost his job due to the fact that he had made his son his top priority. The court took this is a bad manner and looked down upon Ted for this, and also the fact that Billy had fallen at the park and had to have stitches on his face. The court made it sound as if it was Ted's fault that Billy had fallen, but in turn what child doesn't get hurt at the playground at least once in their life? The court tried to make it sound as if Ted was a bad parent due to the fact that he was the male figure in the childs life. In the end, Joanna gets custody of Billy but decides that living with her would not be the best thing for Billy.

Normally in society, the fact that the mother would decide to give back the son to the father is not even considered. In most custody cases the mother wins, even if it is the father who is the better parent. Men seem to be thought of as bad parents just because it is normally the father that leaves, and the mother is left to take care of the child. This film is one that hits home with a lot of its audience. Most kids have seen the effects of divorce and have seen how it affects kids when they are separated from one of their parents. The part in the movie that really effected me was when Ted and Billy were making breakfast before Joanna came to pick up Billy to move him to her place. Billy breaks down and cries that he has to leave his father. This is sentimental because the same scene first occured when Joanna first left and they were making breakfast. At first Billy wanted his mom to come home, but after he got to know his father and how much he loved him, his opinion of his father changed completely.

This was a great movie about divorce and how men do not have equal rights to women. This movie shows the affect of divorce cases from the viewpoint of the father instead of taking the mother's side as most of society does. Kramer Vs. Kramer. Dir. Robert Benton. Perf. Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. 17. Video Cassette. Columbia, 1.

Amid a plethora of synonyms for the word 'educated,' I selected three terms that accurately describe an educated individual. An educated person is cultured, well read, and versatile. In addition to pursuing an education by reading the literature of the great thinkers of the past, an educated person explores the ideas and knowledge possessed by various people around the world and their cultures. Gaining knowledge and learning about foreign cultures are essential to obtaining a good education. Unless you are able to apply the ideas, information, and experiences that you have acquired to your everyday existence, you are not versatile and in turn, uneducated. It is important to become an educated person so you can be the most positive contribution to society as possible. Plutarch wrote, "The very spring and root of honesty and virtue lie in good education." If everyone strove to become more educated, society, as a whole, would be more just and conscious.

The benefits of receiving a solid academic education from great books are endless, but in attempting to understand the history and contributions of foreign cultures by immersing yourself in them, you can gain a greater understanding of the world around you. I believe that the key to understanding one's self and culture lies in understanding the cultures of others. By realizing the connections between your own culture and others' cultures, you can make conclusions about who you are and your past. It is also very important to appreciate the artistic, literary, and technological advances that respective cultures have made in the past and are making today. When you are aware of the history of your own people and those foreign to you, you are more educated.

In addition to being worldly and cultured, an educated person is well informed and well read. A great deal of modern society's ideas concerning government, philosophy, and religion stem from the works of the classical thinkers. If you are interested in becoming an educated person, you must read and analyze these ancient works to more fully understand the concepts that are prevalent today. Learning and analyzing information is important in the journey to becoming educated, but the real task of an educated person is to take the information that you have learned and develop your own set of beliefs and ideas. It is also imperative that you do not completely disregard the beliefs and opinions of others that you do not agree with. Malcolm Forbes put it best when he stated, "Education's purpose is to replace an empty mind with an open one."

Help with essay on plethora

Even if you are open minded, knowledgeable, and cultivated, you can be considered uneducated if you do not apply the knowledge, gained throughout your life, to accomplishing your goals. An educated person is versatile and can overcome any hardship that hinders her success. Because an educated person develops the skills needed to adapt to undesirable circumstances and solve problems, she is able to fulfill her dreams more readily than that educated person who does not apply the tools acquired in her lifetime. Not only is an educated person multifaceted, learned, and civilized, she is also able to formulate her own set of truths and beliefs based on the information and experience she has obtained.

Not mindful I was fair.

Why did a great lord find me out,

And praise my flaxen hair?

Why did a great lord find me out,

To fill my heart with care?

He lured me to his palace home -

Woes me for joy thereof-

To lead a shameless shameful life,

His plaything and his love.

He wore me like a silken knot,

He changed me like a glove;

So now I moan, an unclean thing,

Who might have been a dove.

O Lady kate, my cousin Kate,

You grew more fair than I

He saw you at your fathers gate,

Chose you, and cast me by.

He watched your steps along the lane,

Your work among the rye;

He lifted you from mean estate

To sit with him on high.

Because you were so good and pure

He bound you with his ring

The neighbors call you good and pure,

Call me an outcast thing.

Even so I sit and howl in dust,

You sit in gold and sing

Now which of us has tenderer heart?

You had the stronger wing.

O cousin Kate, my love was true,

Your love was writ in sand

If he had fooled not me but you,

If you stood where I stand,

Hed not have won me with his love

Nor bought me with his land;

I would have spit into his face

And not have taken his hand.

Yet Ive a gift you have not got,

And seem not like to get

For all your clothes and wedding-ring

Ive little doubt you fret.

My fair-haired son, my shame, my pride,

Cling closer, closer yet

Your father would give his lands for one

To wear his coronet.

As far back as I can remember, my grandmother has always had a great love for animals and always had a lot of them. As I was growing up, she had chickens, ducks, geese, dogs, and cats. There was, however, one particular animal she owned at one time that I will never forget. When I was in first and second grade, my grandmother owned a big white house with green shutters. It was back in the woods, and right next to the river. Across the lawn from it was a smaller house which was where my mother, my father and I lived. Since we were living on my grandmother's property, we had to put up with the animals that she had to.

One morning I was walking across the lawn from my grandmother's house to mine and it happened. I heard a loud honk. When I turned, there was Henry charging toward me, neck down and beak forward ready to attack. I immediately increased my pace from a nice steady walk to a "run like hell" tempo. I made it to the ramp and he was close behind. He began following me up the ramp, but I made it through the door and was safe. From that day forth I always kept a stick by the door so that whenever I made my venture across the lawn I could protect myself if I needed to.

I was not the only one who Henry liked to assault. He would go after my mother and my friends as well. He didn't go after my grandmother anymore. The one time he dared to, she taught him a lesson. She grabbed him by the neck and scolded him, and he never bothered her again. I eventually noticed a pattern in this goose's frequent attacks. He only chased after females. He never attacked my father. He loved my father. When my father would sit out on our front porch, Henry would always walk up the steps just so my father could pet him.

I hated that stupid sexist goose because he would single me out and other members of the female sex. He would always ruin my day. One day, though, an event happened that I thought would change all of our lives. My mother was driving down the driveway in the truck just minding her own business. All of a sudden there he was charging toward the truck. My mother slowed down but kept driving. She was hoping it would scare him and he would move out of the way. That was not the case. He kept on running right toward the truck in an attack position and then BOOM! There was a head on collision between Henry and the truck.

Well, I was quite happy when I found out what happened, but also disappointed when I found out he survived the accident. He did go blind, however, and could no longer chase us. I guess there was some positive outcome of this incident.

A few months went by and life was great without having to worry about being pecked to death every time I would walk outside. I thought my troubles and conflicts with that dumb bird were over, but I was wrong. Henry gained his sight back! He immediately began to pursue and attack us all again.

Eventually we sold the house and the people who bought it took the animals along with it. I was finally rid of that vexing creature. Even after all of our experiences with this goose that did not stop my grandmother from starting over again in her new home. She again got geese, ducks, and chickens and those geese were just as mean as Henry had been. I still hate geese to this day.

The perception of order in chaos is a function of linguistics, as it is of all sciences. At rare times the development of order becomes and act of creation pure and simple. It was so when J.R.R. Tolkien produced, out of his vocation of linguistics, the literature of Middle-Earth The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings.

Language is so integral to culture that a linguist can reconstruct a culture from its language just as a biologist can reconstruct an animal from a bone. Tolkien's Production of the invented language called Quenya compelled him to depict the Elvish cultures of The Silmarillion.

Tolkien spent much of his youth involved in learning, studying, and creating languages. His mother introduced him to Latin, French, and German. While at school, he was taught or taught himself Greek, Middle English, Old English (Anglo-Saxon), Old Norse (Old Icelandic), Gothic, modern, and medieval Welsh, Finnish, Spanish, and Italian. Other languages of which he had a working knowledge included Russian, Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Dutch, and Lombardic.

The critical influence that directed Tolkien's creative genius toward the works for which he is best known occurred when, at the age of twenty-one, he read the old English poem Crist by Cynewulf. Two lines stood out vividly

Order Custom Essay on Tolkien

Eala Earendel engla beorhast

Ofer middangeard monnum sended.

Hail Earendel, brightest of angels,

Above Middle-Earth sent unto men.

The imagery of an angelic light sent purposefully to mankind is powerful. In these two lines are three elements essential to Tolkien's works a light called Earendel, its purposeful sending to men, and the word Middle-earth.

Middle-earth is an ancient designation for Europe or the known world of Europeans. It is universal for peoples to see their environment, large or small, as central. Medieval English spoke of the known lands as middle-erde of meddel-earth. In Old English the word was middan-geard.

In 114, after reading the Crist, Tolkien wrote his first poem about Earendil, as he spelled the name, and during the following two years began to combine the theme of Earendil with an invented language, based on Finnish, which as to become Quenya Elvish. He began to write poetry in this language. Humphrey Carpenter records a segment of an early poem for which no translation is given

Ai lintulinda Lasselanta

Pilingeve suyer nalla ganta

Kuluvi ya karnevalinar

V'ematte singi Eldamar

The poem contains the elements Eldamar and Valinor essential to The Silmarillion. It apparently begins with a characteristic Elvish poignancy "O swiftly sing of the Fall of Leaves."

Elvish languages continued to grow and flourish, and the tales that would later become The Silmarillion began to take shape. Of these languages, Tolkien said, "The 'Sindarin', a Gray-Elven language, is in fact constructed deliberately to resemble Welsh phonologically and to have a relation to High-Elven (Quenya) to that existing between British (properly so-called) and Latin. All the names in the book, and the language, are of course constructed, and not at random." The book referred to was The Lord of the Rings which is not in fact a trilogy (the three books are not complete stories in themselves) and was not considered so by Tolkien. However they were created, the languages are certainly not random. They lend to Tolkien's works a unique dimension of realism

A Raisin in the Sun Essay question

Throughout history, America has showed its will and strength to overcome obstacles and to reach its goals. Every new decade demonstrated something knew and different that America had to pull through. This country has overcome many important feats, which shape our history and the way we live today. Back in the 150's, America was starting something new. We have just come out of vigorous wars and just wanted to relax. During this period, segregation of the country was not under way, but many African-Americans wanted it. They wanted to live a normal life and wanted to live like the white families did. In this book, it shows a poor black family living in a small apartment. This play shows you what it was like to live in their family, by putting the audience into the characters lives. It showed you how they lived and what troubles were brought to them. But there is one character in this play that sticks out in my mind and that is Walter.

Living in this small apartment is the Younger family. This family consists of a couple, Walter and Ruth, with their son Travis. Also, Walters's sister, Beneatha and their mother, referred to as "Mama," also lives in the apartment. They are a happy family but just had to get over the tragic death of Mamas' husband. From his death though, they received a check for $10,000. Instinctively, Mama, but half of it in the bank account, but unfortunately gave the other half to Walter. She told him to put half of the money into an account for Beneatha's college, and for him to keep the other half. Since Walter first got married, he was a chauffeur for a white man, and he always hated it. But he had the opportunity to open up a store with his two buddies; however, Ruth told him that she did not want him to do that and managed to change his mind. Also, another problem why he couldn't go in on the store was because he did not have the money, but now that his mama gave him the money, he had an idea. He decided to invest in the store and gave his friend all of the money. He would soon learn a lesson that would haunt him forever. His so called friend, took the money and escaped somewhere with it, leaving Walter with nothing except the wraith and guilt of his family. Through his life he did many stupid things, and he knew it, but there was one thing he knew was not stupid and that was having his son grow up to be like him.

As mamas only son, Ruth's disobedient husband, Travis's caring father, and Beneatha's aggressive brother, Walter provides the audience with the perspective of how the twentieth- century African- American male lived. He is the typical man of the family who struggles to support it and who tries to discover new, and better ideas maintain the on-going life of this family. The many things that try to stop Walter from providing what he feels is the best alternative for his family, frustrate him. He believes that money will solve all of their problems, but he is rarely successful with money.

Walter often fights and argues with Ruth, Mama, and Beneatha. Far from being a good listener, he does not seem to understand that he must pay attention to his family members concerns in order to help them. Eventually, he realizes that he cannot raise the family up from poverty

Chapter 5 Public Opinion

America is a diverse country. Different cultures, races, region etc co-exist. In a country with many "public opinions" it is easier for the formation and cleavages in public attitudes. The formation of smaller groups in turn creates cleavages with other groups. This increases the diversity in public attitudes. The three areas where this is evident are religion, gender, and education. These three factors are few of many factors that account for the formation of political attitudes also contributes to the cleavages in public opinions.

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on Political Analysis of Public Opinion?

Firstly, America is a place with various religions. Factors like social status and religious traditions unite a certain religion or a group of religion. But this also increases the cleavage in political attitude with the other religions. This can be seen through the analysis of the political culture of the Jews. As Jews immigrated to America, they were poor and often were subject to racial bias. This made them join the Democratic Party and the liberal party. Also their tradition of social justice and personal rectitude helped them unite and form similar cliques. This made the Jews liberal in economically and socially. While this happened to the Jews, the Protestants became more socially conservative. From this we can see that when one religion united, the cleavage between them and other religions increased.

Secondly, gender is also an important example of "formation and cleavage" of political attitudes. The male and female usually formed their own political attitudes that happen to be the antitheses of each other. This resulted in the cleavages between male and female attitudes. An example can be seen in the 10's and 140's. In this period of time, alcohol and war was the hot topic. Majority of men supported liquor and war while the majority of the women supported ban on alcohol and not getting involved in a war. Events like this made the women unite and vote for the Republican Party. Same thing happened during elections, women mostly voted for women candidates. Thus, creating a formation in public opinion among women but also forming a cleavage with opinions of men.

Lastly, education also helps us spot the formation and cleavage in political attitudes. Education, especially college, made the people more liberal. The country had more conservatives and fewer liberals. But the colleges have helped the formation of the liberal groups but it has raised the cleavages between the conservatives and liberals. The colleges were like catalyst that increased the percentage difference by creating more liberals.

The three areas religion, gender, and education are just a few examples of how factors that account for the formation also contributes to the cleavages in public opinion. Other examples include social class, region etc. These prove to us the diversity of public opinions in America. It indicates to us that, ideas of one group might oppose the idea of other, forming public opinions and cleavages.

Please note that this sample paper on Political Analysis of Public Opinion? is for your review only. In order to eliminate any of the plagiarism issues, it is highly recommended that you do not use it for you own writing purposes. In case you experience difficulties with writing a well structured and accurately composed paper on Political Analysis of Public Opinion?, we are here to assist you. Your cheap research papers on Political Analysis of Public Opinion? will be written from scratch, so you do not have to worry about its originality.

The place I love the most is the barbershop. In the barbershop what fascinated me the most was how many different people would come to get the different haircuts. The barbershop is a place I could can go and meet all kinds of different people. It is also a place where you can learn to play checkers, talk about sports, and gossip too.

Growing up in Philadelphia, my father would always take me with him to the shop; I was about five years old when he started showing me around. I remember my first experience, it was during the summer, and we woke up about 6 a.m. to open the shop at 8 a.m. It was a very exciting time for me because it was my first time going to the shop. This would be the first of many trips to the barbershop. My first thought was that I would have a lot of fun, but I soon found out it wasn't that exciting at all. I was very bored because there wasn't much for a five year old to do.

Their conversations all had adult themes. They talked about boxing, which mainly centered around Muhammad Ali. They also talked about women. Then the older men would sit around and play checkers all day. That is where I learned to play checkers. The older men showed me the different moves in checkers.

Things would start to change as I got older, I would began to understand what the barbershop was all about. When I turned seven, my father started allowing me to cut my uncle's hair. I would cut my uncle's head bald. That was a great experience for me; I really enjoy cutting my uncle hair. I would cut his hair at lease once a week. Then I would start to shine shoes at the barbershop. By shining shoes, I earned money that helped me buy things that I wanted. One Christmas eve, I earned about two hundred dollars shining shoes. That was the most memorable Christmas of my childhood.

Write your My barbershop experience research paper

My father helped me set up a little store on the outside of the barbershop. Some of the things I sold were sodas, candy, gum, and potato chips. My father took me to the store on Mondays to buy the things for the store. I would stay outside for about three or four hours a day. Business was great because it was summer, and everybody was out. I earned about fifty dollars a week. Over all, my childhood experiences were good.

The Barbershop has changed a lot over the years. When I visit the barbershop in the area today, there are no shoeshine stands. Vending machines have replaced the need for the little store, supplying the needs of customers today. I am not as bored today when I visit the barbershop. I have made many friends at the two barbershops that I visit today. We play pool, spades, and video games. Sometimes we play checkers, and I remember the old days when I first experienced the barbershop.

My barbershop experience was very good because it is where I learned to play checkers and to have conversations about different sports. I am also grateful for my father who let me cut hair in the shop. I was glad to have that little store and to be able to shine shoes in the barbershop. It helped me to buy some of the thing I needed. Still today, I am apart of the barbershop. We play pool, spades and video games. Although some things have change, the barbershop is still a great place to visit.

Comparisons/Contrasts between The Giver and Gattaca

There are many differences and similarities between the novel "The Giver," and the movie "Gattaca." Right from the start, you can tell that both communities are very controlling over their people. The Giver is more controlling, but Gattaca has more demanding rules. Some of the same rules and regulations apply in both communities. You don't really have privacy in either community. They know your past, and in some cases like Gattaca, they know your future. Another similarity is discrimination. Both

communities discriminate people because their simply different, or "invalid." Your whole life is watched upon and in a lot of cases, controlled. The Giver told you what job you would have based on what best fits your category, and Gattaca just has restrictions based upon your genes. They pretty much just limited your choices because of something you have absolutely no control over. Some differences are; in Gattaca you could choose to have a baby on your own, in The Giver, you were given only two children. If you weredifferent or perhaps a twin, you would be released in The Giver. In Gattaca they knew the exact day you were going to die, and for what reason too.

There were also similarities and differences in the characters of the novel and the movie. For instance, Vincent and Jonas. They both had a destination out of their

community, although they were two different places. Jonas wanted to go "Elsewhere," and Vincent wanted to go to "Titan." They both broke the rules of their community to do this, but they both also succeeded. They both left their families behind, and haven't seen them since. Don't be fooled. They weren't twins. They had differences too. Jonas was a child, Vincent was an adult. Vincent saved his brother who almost drowned, and Jonas saved Gabriel (not really his brother) from being released. They were different from everyone in their community but Vincent was really ill, and Jonas was not.

Another group of people who are alike and different are Jerome and the Giver. They were both isolated from everyone in their community because of who they were or

what was wrong with them. One thing is for sure, they both lived for a purpose. After they had succeeded in doing so, they both killed themselves. Jerome and the Giver had a

special bond with another one of the characters that ended up growing to love. They gave a gift of themselves to make someone else happy, and that's another thing they shared.

They were different in what they gave away though. The giver gave away memories of the world since the beginning of time. Jerome however, gave his identity.

The book, "The Giver," and the movie, "Gattaca," were alike and different. But there's one thing that made them identical. That was that in both the movie and the book, the main idea is that if there's a will, there's a way. Also that anyone can exceed their expectations.

Please note that this sample paper on comparison between the book "The Giver" and the movie "Gattaca" is for your review only. Nathanial Hawthorne was a great authour he comes from the puritan time period. he was around while the witch trials were taking place. also during his time period was the familiar story of ehster pryme and the scarlet letter he was also related to the famous judge in the Crucible judge hawthorne. he also owned lots of property such as pigs many houses chickens, and cows he wrote many stories including many short stories. The things he wrote were very informative to the public. I think that all this goes back to mcarthyism where alot of people were accused of doing many things they didnt do including being accused of being a communist many people got in trouble for being a communist. informative essays are important to the public to inform the about the things going on in the real world through a story thats easier to understand even though the stories are somewhat true they arent always completely like the Crucible many parts in the story are not true and are very false statements like betty parris her name wasnt even betty in real life it was martha some of the poeple that got hanged in the movie didnt really get hanged in real life most people dont read these kind of stories because most people dont have the right mind to do this i honestly dont know why i read it in the first place you just have to get past the story into real life im suprised that there arent anymore stories like this out there because of the true nature of the story you must get pass the reading and see into the story

The Cambridge International Dictionary of English defines the word true as real or sincere and the word friend as a companion. Put the two together and the result of true friend is a real or sincere companion. True friends are people that come and many different shapes and sizes. There can be true friends like a boyfriend or girlfriend, or just a very close friend that listens and helps, or maybe a family member like a brother or sister or a parent.

In most people's eyes, a true friend is someone who they can trust and rely on. True friends do not go behind others back and talk badly about them or spread rumors about them. True friends are there to stick up for their friends against someone who talks badly about them. True friends are always there for someone when they need them no matter what. They can be there to talk, help, and provide transportation to somewhere or there just to listen. Everybody needs a friend that can listen to his or her problems and be there to help. It is a necessity in life because nobody needs to keep their emotions built up inside of them all the time.

Many people have many different true friends that they can rely on. It is important to have more than one true friend in their life, and many people have at least three or four true friends that they can trust. Having more than one true friend is important because if someone needs a few different views on a situation, they can go to many different friends for advice. However, some people only need one true friend.

Write my Essay on What is a True Friend? for me

True friends can also be people that just like hanging out with each other. Many people have friends that they like to go shopping at the mall with, or someone to just sit at home and watch TV or a movie with. This is important because everyone needs somebody that they can just relax with. Girls are more subject to the going shopping at the mall with friends because that is just what most girls like to do. They like to go out and spend money with their friends and buy unnecessary shoes and clothes. Guys fit more into the sitting at home category. On Sundays, most guys like to sit at home and watch football with friends.

As people get older, some friends move away and others stay. People grow apart from each other and some never talk to each other again. Everyone needs to cherish their friends while they are still there and still close. Thankfully, with the technology the world has today, friends can always stay in touch via email, telephone, or the postal service. Everybody makes new friends as they grow up. Many of them are fellow students at a university, fellow employees at a business, or people that live on the same street. Most will never see each other again after college and some will stay in touch throughout the years only to fade away into obscurity from each other. But true friends will never fade away and will always stay in touch to make sure that that bond between friends will never break.

In conclusion, true friends are hard to come by. If someone has the opportunity to hold on to a true friend, they should not pass it up. True friends form the backbone of who a person is and who a person will become. Without true friends, nobody would know who they are inside and what to do in life.

Trifles

Mrs. Peters

Character Analysis

Mrs. Peters is a very instrumental character in the plot of Susan Glaspell's Trifles. Not only does she help to discover the truth about a murder, but also makes the decision to conceal the evidence against the murderer. In the story, men have been called out to investigate the scene of John Wright's murder. The only suspect in the case is his wife, Minnie Foster Wright, who has already been taken in to the county jail. Mrs. Peters is the sheriff's wife. She initially has come along for the trip to help pack up Minnie's things. But when the men go offstage to collect clues, Mrs. Peters is left alone in Minnie's kitchen with Mrs. Hale, the neighbor's wife and it is here that the two women discover the "trifles", which are the clues that lead to understanding John Wright's death.

At first, Mrs. Peters is reserved and overly cautious about what she and Mrs. Hale find. The two ladies come across a quilt that Minnie was knotting before she was taken in to the police department for questioning. Mrs. Hale points out that the stitching is all very neat and even until the last few rows. When Mrs. Hale begins to pull the poor stitching out so she can redo it, Mrs. Hale becomes nervous and tries to stop her. Being the sheriff's wife, she knows not to tamper with evidence of any kind. Mrs. Hale ponders what could have upset Minnie to make her sew so crookedly, but Mrs. Peters tries to stomp that notion out by saying that she herself sometimes "sew(s) awful queer when (she's) just tired." She tries not to make assumptions, because she knows that is a dangerous thing to do in her husband's business. But soon, she begins to understand what really did take place in the house of John and Minnie Wright, and her attitude changes.

Mrs. Peters listens to Mrs. Hale talk about how the house was never cheerful and that was why Minnie's friends had always kept a difference. Mrs. Peters learns that although Mr. Wright was a good enough man, he was very cold and harsh, and almost impossible to live with. She listens to stories about how Minnie used to sing gaily until her husband had shut her up. When the body of a bird belonging to Minnie is found, killed in the same way that John Wright was killed, it becomes obvious to both of the women what has actually taken place. It is here that Mrs. Peters becomes pivotal to the story. If she and Mrs. Hale decide to let the men in on their findings, there will surely be enough evidence to convict Minnie Wright. As a sheriff's wife, she knows that she ought to turn Minnie in, but as a woman, Mrs. Peters feels an obligation to her kind. Mrs. Peters understands what Minnie had to endure during her marriage to John Wright and she and Mrs. Hale feel that that is enough to let her off the hook for murdering him. The women, now concealing vital evidence, decide to go on as if they have found nothing, and save Minnie from imprisonment. This steep of a commitment for the sake of a woman who she has never met, is quite a large undertaking, but it shows us how important having a support system between married women is to Mrs. Peters. Her sense of obligation and duty to her kind overpowers her knowledge of the law and her husband's position within the law.

I have never been a strong student in history but the few things that teachers have drilled into my head throughout my years of education I remember. One of those topics happens to be the American revolution and how it was started. I have always thought that George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were the two strong men behind this war. That they were the two men that we should thank for the freedom of our country. I guess since history is so detailed and so many people have contributed to where we are today that teachers tend to leave out some people who may not be as famous, but who are just as important. This book made me realize that the "little" men had a lot to do with the revolution.

Holton does give credit to Washington and Jefferson, but he helps show how the Shawnees, Cherokee and other natives, farmers, along with slaves and colonial governors made Virginia the place it became in 1776. After reading this I believe that the Indians were the main group pushing for independence. The Cherokees and Shawnees came together to trade and help push for independence because it was their land they were defending. Virginia's leaders at the time were desperate men who thought the only way to keep their status of upper class was to declare their independence from Great Britain.

All the groups involved worked for a common goal of freedom. The African Americans were trying to be freed from slavery, the natives were fighting for their land and unity based on a common color. The common folk wanted a greater voice of opinion in public matters and the Virginian Leaders wanted to enforce boycotts. As Holton states on page 1, "Activists of all stripes found that an effective strategy for building political unity was to urge their followers to embrace broader identities." Despite every groups difference, in color, religion and beliefs, they all had common strategies and believed if they stood together with the same goal in mind they stood a better chance of achieving their dream.

Buy custom forced founders term paper

In the beginning of the book Holton talks about how the natives do not want to give up their land, and that the British do not want to spend a lot of money to fight the natives for the land. While at the same time the Virginians were angry at the imperial trade policy because it effected their tobacco plantations and owning slaves. Each group showed how they are angry about not having the freedom to do what they want. Then the slaves and farmers seem to frighten the Virginians into declaring their independence because there seemed to be no other way. All of this seemed to go unnoticed in many history classes, because the farmers and slaves never seem to get credit for pushing the Virginians into declaring Independence.

Holton seems to bring reality into play. Did everyone really think that Washington and Jefferson were so heroic? After reading this book I realized that they too were scared, confused and divided as was everyone else in the colonies. Washington and Jefferson did have to face many challenges from the slaves, natives and farmers, so they do deserve credit for the Independence, but also do the slaves, farmers and natives who pushed to be free. This war would have never turned out the same if everyone living in Virginia was not aiming towards the same goal of being free. Everyone did not exactly what they set out to get, but they did get the freedom from Great Britain.

The movie version of this story and the original written version vary quite a bit. One significant difference was the change in the character of Ethan. I think that Edith Wharton's image of Ethan, which was present in the book, was much different than what was shown in the movie. The movie was good, but it did not depict the events of the book very accurately.

In the movie, Ethan was much more vocal about his feelings compared to in the book. He rarely said a word to Mattie in the novel, but in the movie they were bot garrulous. The kitchen scene in the movie, which in the book showed how they knew each other's feeling without them being said or obviously shown, involved much interaction between the two. From the beginning of the movie, Ethan is never very shy to talk to Mattie unlike in the book where he hardly speaks to her. In this kitchen scene the cat breaks zeenas dish where as in the book, Mattie herself is actually the one who breaks zeenas favorite dish.

Although the beginning and end of the book are told from a narrator's point of view, most of the novel concerns Ethan Frome's actions and view on life. However in the movie, the character of Ethan Frome was not the crux. One scene that caught my attention right away, when watching the movie was the very first scene. In the movie, the narrator comes to starkfield as a Minister and sees Ethan from in the train station, differing from the book where the story begins in a post office when Ethan picks up a package from the post office. The narrator in the book was an engineer, stuck in starkfield because of a strike.

Some of the changes in the book seemed to make an enormous change, some were good and others were bad. The good changes seemed to make the movie take another path that the book had never taken. In the movie the minister sees that the whole town is ostracizing Ethan Frome, but in the book the narrator never even realizes that there is something else going on besides him being crippled that the town people seems to find. This change made the movie more interesting, because it brought the antipathy that existed between Ethan and the people in starkfield.

His communication was not only different with Mattie; it was also different towards the people in Starkfield. Instead of just minding his own business, as he did in the book, he often said things to bystanders who looked upon him with curiosity. There was one scene that was mostly the same from book to novel, though it was not very important to the story line. It was when Ethan asked Mr. Hale for money.

Some of the changes in the book seemed to make an enormous change, some were good and others were bad. The good changes seemed to make the movie take another path that the book had never taken. In the movie the minister sees that the whole town is ostracizing Ethan Frome, but in the book he never even realizes that there is nothing going on besides him being crippled that the town seems to find. This change made the movie more interesting, because it brought the antipathy that existed between Ethan and the people in starkfield. I think both the movie and the book were good because each followed a different path to arrive to the conclusion.

Firstlyt, the role of the woman in family life in Australia and Switzerland has several similarities. Most Australian women are housewives and do home duties, such as cleaning and cooking, as do Swiss women. Hoever, it is also very common, that housewives in both countries work full or part-time. About 40% of the women in both countries have jobs in addition to their home duties. Although the women are working, they have to find time to look after the children and assist them with their homework and their personal issues. Hoewever, the difference is that Australians start to have children earlier, because they marry when they are around , whereas the Swiss marry when they are around and so they have children late.

Secondly, the mens roles in family life are similar in a number of ways in both countries. Australian men go to work the whole day, as do Swss men. In both countries the are raised to be independent and self-sufficient early in life and become involved in some household chores. Similarly to Switzerland, the Australian children start to move out of the home at the time the begin their studies or work, and often share an apartment with other students. The relationship between children and partents is very close in both countries and they spend a lot of time together. However, there is a differnce at which time the become adults by law. Swss children become adultws by law on their 18th birthday. In contrast, the Australian children become adults by law on their 1st birthday.

On the other hand, in Switzerland they are made of timber and have a white surface. The outside walls are adorned with window boxes of geraniums and other flowers. Similarly, both of them have fenced yards and look neat and orderly. Most Australians and Swiss live in urban areas. In Switzerland, its very common for families to live in apartments, but in Australia most families live in houses.

In conclusion, the family life in Australia is not very different from the family life in Switzerland. I think the most important thin in Australia and Switzerland is, that family members hold together, take care of each other and spend as much time as possible together. Because the family will always be there for you whatever life brings

While there are many fundamental themes in The Merchant of Venice, only one seems to drive the play to its inevitable conclusion. There is a constant theme of self interest versus love. On the surface, this seems to be the dividing factor between the Christians and the Jew, as Shylock is supposed to only care about money, profits, and such, while the rest of the cast value human relationships more.

Men such as Antonio and Bassiano lend money without interest or even thought at times, and end up taking far more risks for those they care about. "He lends out money gratis, and brings down | The rate of usance here with us in Venice."(1..45) Shylock complains to the audience in an aside. Antonio agrees to Shylock's nasty terms simply because he loves Bassiano that much.

Further on in the play, Shylock reportedly runs through the streets crying "My daughter! O my ducats!" (.8.15). Through this statement he seems to value his money at least as much as his daughter and this suggests that his love balanced with his greed. But as in several of Shakespeare's plays, everything is not always as it seems.

In act three scene one, Shylock laments the loss of a ring, given to him by his deceased wife, which his daughter had stolen and sold for a mere monkey. He doesn't miss the value of the ring but it's sentimental value, vowing "I would not have given it for a wilderness of monkeys." (.1.100) Too, his stubbornness in only accepting a pound of flesh in payment of Antonio's debt, even when offered "thrice thy money", shows that not everything can be measured in ducats to him.

His supposed Christian betters are not any more consistant. Bassiano first seeks to marry Portia, not for love or her beauty, but because her money will get him out of his huge debts. He asks Antonio to lend him money as an investment, though Antonio insists that the money is lent out of love, not business. He even has to go into debt, something he never does, to supply the ducats.

Thou knowst that all my fortunes are at sea;

Neither have I money nor commodity

To raise a present sum; therefore go forth,

Try what my credit can in Venice do;

That shall be rackd, even to the uttermost,

To furnish thee to Belmont to fair Portia.

Go presently inquire, and so will I,

Where money is; and I no question make

To have it of my trust or for my sake. (1.1.0)

Near the end of the play, after both men have been married, they are so careless as to give away one wedding ring and allow the other to be stolen. Though they unwittingly "give" them to their wives, this illustrates their self intrest far more than their love for their wives. If they can so easily give away the symbols of their marriages, then they must value something far more than love.

Perhaps the most famous speech of the play, Shylock says that Jews are as much a human being as a Christian, but other hate them just the same. Antonio and the others do not trust (in this case perhaps rightfully) and revile Shylock simply because he is a Jew.

Shylock refuses to be swayed at the end of the play, to offer mercy to Antonio, because no mercy or kindness was shown to him in the past. The Christian charcters speak of such things as love, mercy, and kindness, but seldom practice these morals outside of their own circles.

Compare the opening sequences of 'Strangers on a train' (151) and Billy Elliot (000).

The two films are set in very different periods and locations from each other, and will vary to a large extent on the acting, the use of dialogue and the direction of the motion picture. The direct impacts that both pieces have in the opening scenes are very diverse in the sense that the cinematography and music are engaged in a very dissimilar manner. However, the opening scenes also are alike in the fact that they introduce the main characters and set the scene for they rest of the film.

The themes in the two films are very different, the issues in the Strangers on a Train being the crisscrossing and the themes of Billy Elliot being the struggle to fight for what you believe in, but more so to stand up to your fears and not be knocked down by what other people think. The only real major theme in strangers on a train is the crisscrossing or double cross. This is referred to near the beginning of the film before the characters meet when quite a long shot from the front of the train is taken of the railway track crossing over many other tracks in the sense that they are crisscrossing. Also Guy Haynes owns a lighter that is focused on quite a lot by the cameras and the photographers, which has a pair of tennis racquets that cross over each other on the face side. The conversation between the two gentlemen nearing Guy Haynes stop where he will get off the train, is also about crisscrossing. However this is not quite as subtle as Bruno talks about wanting to murder his father, and tries to make Guy tell us the name of someone he wants to get shot of. Guy eventually tells him his wife.

Loose ends

The relationships between the characters in Billy Elliot seem very frayed as he has quite a hard life to lead, whereas in the other film under study the characters Bruno Anthony and Guy Haynes appear to get on quite well. The characters that dont get on well with each other in this film are Guy Haynes and his wife. The location of Billy Elliot is in a poor terrace of houses that is in a city in the north of the country (Newcastle or sommin) and is in modern day, approximately in the 180s. The location of Strangers on a Train in the section we have seen is mostly on a train that stops at a town on its way. The period of the film is around the 150s. Billy leads a very hard life but the film seems very life like and real whereas Strangers on a Train does not have this quality. Whilst there is a constant battle going on outside about the miners strike, which is where Billys dad and brother work (down the mines), there is also a constant conflict inside the house between the family (appears to be). Conflict in Strangers on a Train between Guy Haynes and his wife.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in women today. The American

Cancer Society reported that in 001 an estimated 00,000 new cases of breast cancer were

diagnosed in woman in the U.S. Although, not widely known, men can be stricken with breast

cancer also. However, the numbers are much lower than occurrences in women. For example,

1,500 men were reported to have contracted breast cancer in 001. The key to surviving breast

cancer is early detection and treatment. When breast cancer is found early and confined to the

breast, the survival rate is close to 100%. Beginning at t he age of 0 years old, every women

should being to practice monthly self breast exams. As a woman ages, the risk of cancer also

increases. Doctor visits are important too.

After the age of 40, a woman should have a mammogram every two years and practice

self exams every month. As with all cancers they start with cells in the body that begin to change.

The following explains the stages of breast cancer

Stage 0 - Cancer cells are present in either the lining of a lobule or a duct but they

have not spread to the surrounding fatty tissue. This area is restricted and begins

under the arm pit area or slightly lower, towards the side of the breast.

Stage 1 - Cancer has spread from the lobules or ducts to nearby tissue in the

breast, and the tumor is generally /4 inches or less in diameter; the lymph

nodes are not involved.

Stage - Cancer has spread from the lobules or ducts to nearby tissue in the

breast, and tumor may be inches in diameter; sometimes the lymph nodes

may be involved.

Stage - Known as locally advanced cancer; tumor may be larger than inches in

diameter, and cancer may or may not have spread to lymph nodes or other tissues

near the breast.

Stage 4 - Known as metastatic; cancer has spread from the breast and lymph nodes

under the arm to other parts of the body, such as bone, liver, lung or brain.

Medical treatment will vary upon the stage the breast cancer is discovered. In Stage 0 it is

virtually impossible to know healthy cells are changing into cancerous cells. In Stage 1 (and all

subsequent stages), if a woman finds a hard lump, she should IMMEDIATELY go to her doctor.

A biopsy will be done. This type of test is done in a hospital, takes a short amount of times, and

after two hours or so, the woman can leave. This biopsy consists of a needle injected into the

tumor and cells extracted for analyzing. The results of the test determines any future treatment.

The tumor can be non-cancerous which would then require no treatment.

From Stages thru 4, each medical treatment is different. As the stages become more

life-threatening the treatments become more aggressive. Treatment will vary from chemotherapy,

radiation, hormonal drugs and many others. Many woman require part or all of their breast (or

breasts) removed. Fortunately, reconstructive surgery is sometimes possible and helps a woman

feel better; breast surgery can be psychologically very difficult for a patient.

The American Cancer Society and much celebrity promotions, through television and

other media, have promoted more awareness and education to the public. Many more women are

having mammograms, doing self-exams and seeing their doctors more. Awareness creates

knowledge and knowledge creates power to realize how important is it to take care of yourself.

Aholds Accounting Scandal Raises Questions on Whats Being

Cured

By FLOYD NORRIS

But another accounting change, which the company said was made after its auditors learned

more information about its various international subsidiaries, will reduce reported sales but

apparently will not affect profit.

Those subsidiaries had previously been consolidated, even though they were not fully owned.

That meant all the revenue was reported by Royal Ahold, although it would then deduct from

its profit the portion of profit controlled by other investors in the subsidiaries. Now the

subsidiaries will be partly consolidated. The effect will be that a subsidiary that was 50

percent owned, with $1 million in sales, would now show as having provided only $500,000

in sales.

Such partial consolidation is acceptable under Dutch accounting rules, the company said. And

while it is not allowed for American companies, the Securities and Exchange Commission

allows foreign companies to keep such consolidations when they reconcile their financial

statements to United States rules.

Just what facts the auditors found to make them want to stop the company from fully

consolidating the sales was not clear, and Mr. de Ruiter said he could not comment on it.

But the effect will be to reduce the explosive top-line growth of the company. In 1, the

year before Mr. van der Hoeven took over, Royal Ahold had sales of .8 billion euros. By

001, that was up to 66.6 billion euros, and in 00 reported sales were up 1. percent for

the first nine months.
