Lawrence Kohlberg was a psychologist who was concerned with the moral development of humans throughout the life span. He believed that moral development consisted of three levels, and two stages under each level. As you go through life, you go through each of these stages around a certain age, and in a certain order. The first is the preconventional level, which is concerned with reward versus punishment. A child will do what is right to avoid the punishment. It is at this level where we put labels on what is good, bad, right, and wrong. The second is the conventional level, which is concerned with the conformity of expectations from family, peer group, or nation. At this level, a person will show respect and be responsible for their tasks to maintain social order. The last is the postconventional level, which is concerned with consideration of others morals and values.
In American Business Values with International Perspectives, Gerald Cavanagh observes that "business students are more conventional." At the conventional level, approval is earned by good behavior.
