I came to the United States for two reasons, excel my skills and learn a new language to succeed in life. I came to finish my last year of high school, in a school close to my house in the south west of Phoenix. Being a monolingual Spanish-speaking was very difficult to overcome each obstacle. I knew that one the worst of my problems would be this new language, English. For my surprise in this high school instead of teaching me in English, instructors were teaching their classes in Spanish. This experience disappointed me, because I was expecting a high school where all the instructors and students as well speak English only.


I told my parents about this atrocious experience, and we decided go talk to my counselor. We asked him to put me in regular classes, where I can get acquainted with native English speakers. To our surprise he refused to accept our request. He told us that those were not the rules in this high school; that a foreign student not speaking of English must pass for a process of bilingual classes before they can take regular classes. As a consequence, I decided to move to another high school in Peoria. This high school was completely different than the one that I went before. There were not Spanish classes, not bilingual instructors, and not even Hispanic students. I was the only Hispanic going to this high school, and to tell you the truth that scared me. Well, as time went by the school year ended and my English actually had improved. I could not believe that now I can read, speak, listening and even write in English and the most impressive thing is that all happened in only one year. The English Immersion Program which I was exposed helped me as an initial technique of teaching English for students that need English language assistance. English immersion programs normally do not exceed a year, and it is designed to give English learners a working command of the English language as quickly as possible. One day I went back to my old high school to see some of my old friends. When I asked them "How is your English going?" They did not answer; for my surprise they were still struggling with the language. They were still taking bilingual classes without any improvement in the language, but the worst thing was that they had lose their hope, their desire and their dream to become successful in this life and of achieve the American Dream .

I am frustrated that a school district is openly violating the law by continuing with bilingual education. I think that maybe that answer of why they still teaching bilingual classes is that many bilingual-education proponents in the United States have a racist view of Latin American immigrants. I give a standing ovation to families and teacher that want to keep remembering their native culture to their children, but wake up and remember where you live now.


According to statistics published in the Arizona Republic a couple of week a ago, today nearly a hundred thousand children in Arizona public schools do not know English, and less than five percent of these students successfully learn English most years. Ninety-five percent of the Arizona students who start a school year classified as no knowing English end that same school year still classified as not having learned English. Many of these children eventually leave school not able to read English, write English, or sometimes even speak English properly. Any educational system with an annual failure rate of ninety-five percent must be ended. That is why I encourage the school district to get rid of the bilingual classes and accept the English immersion.


About the only people who support bilingual education are the people who make money from this failed government program the bilingual teachers, the bilingual administrators, the bilingual professors, and the politicians they control. The bilingual education industry will say or do anything to avoid the Law of English immersion. The bilingual education industry makes extra money for every child who does not know English, so they sometimes even force young Hispanic children who already know English into their program against their parents wishes. Bilingual education means isolation and racial discrimination against Hispanic children, and must be ended.


The English language is the national public language of the United States of America and of the state of Arizona. It is spoken by the vast majority of Arizona residents, and is also the leading world language for science, technology, and international business, thereby being the language of economic opportunity. Immigrant parents are eager to have their children acquire a good knowledge of English, thereby allowing them to fully participate in the American Dream of economic and social advancement. The government and the public schools of Arizona have a moral obligation and a constitutional duty to provide all of Arizona's children, regardless of their ethnicity or national origins, with the skills necessary to become productive members of our society. Of these skills, being deft in the English language is among the most important. The public schools of Arizona currently do an inadequate job of educating immigrant children, wasting financial resources on costly experimental language programs whose failure over the past two decades is demonstrated by the current high drop-out rates of many immigrant children. Young immigrant children can easily acquire full fluency in a new language, such as English, if they are heavily exposed to that language in the classroom at an early age. Therefore, it is resolved that all children in Arizona public schools shall be taught English as rapidly and effectively as possible.


Bilingual education has failed in its mission to teach children English. By doing so, it has denied thousands of young Americans the opportunity to fully realize the American dream. Students are trapped for years in segregated bilingual classrooms that fail to teach them English. In Arizona, the annual failure rate for these programs approaches 5 percent. According to statistics, in certain districts, some students remain in bilingual education programs for ten years or more.


Despite its name, bilingual education is anything but bilingual. Most so-called bilingual programs exist only for native-Spanish speakers and are often taught exclusively or predominantly in Spanish. If bilingual education is so great why isnt it used for native speakers of the approximately 40 other languages spoken in Arizonas public schools?


Students in bilingual programs not only fail to learn English; they also receive a substandard education in core subjects. Not surprisingly, students in bilingual programs have some of the lowest test scores and highest drop out rates in the country. Even worse, their incapability to speak English considerably limits their future earning potential and opportunities. Basically, the best way to learn English is to be taught in English. It is time to rescue non-English speaking students from the academic Siberia of bilingual education and provide them with the tools they need to fully realize the American Dream.


A couple days ago I interviewed two of my sister's friends at their Marivale High School, in the south side of Phoenix. I asked them "What do you think about the way your instructors teach their classes? Are these classes harder than the classes you used to take in Mexico?" They laughed and suddenly replied "Our classes are very easy. Our instructors are Hispanics so they speak Spanish in the classroom all the time, so the language is not a problem". One of them also added "I do not, personally, miss Mexico because here I find everything pretty similar to Mexico, I speak Spanish at the school, at home and even at my work, so I do not think that I will need to learn the language any time soon".


I think that the classes here in the United States should be way harder than in Mexico or any other country. As I could confirm many students do not know the importance of learn the language, and even worst their teacher are doing nada to help their students. This is happening everywhere, not only in the south side of Phoenix. Hispanics are being segregated by Hispanics. Instead of helping our community, some people are harming people that their only desire is to succeed in life.


If we take a look to the dropout rate in high school, they are not dropping out because they are not intelligent. They are dropping out because they can not speak English. Kids in bilingual classes are learning nada. Kids are not gaining the language until they gain it orally. I urge the school district to apply English immersion in all the schools of Arizona.


In conclusion, parents should take more responsibility for the education of their children. They should ask for English immersion programs in their children's schools. This is the only way to weigh the school district conscience to really provide a good education for the children. I learned English in one year using English immersion. If English immersion really works, why do not try in all the school without exceptions. If the instructors really care about their children, they should teach their pupils English with English. Adopt English to adapt. Real learning means to learn English; if the faster way to learn English if for immersion we must try it.

Emily Elizabeth Dickinson, an American poet who is often described misleadingly as a virgin recluse and a partially cracked poetess (her own phrase) is now widely regarded as on of Americas 1th century genius of letters (Morehouse 618). From 1847-1848, Dickinson attended Mount Holyoke Female Seminary, which she left after only three terms to return home to Amherst and her family due to a persistent illness and also homesickness. In addition, it has been suggested that Dickinsons formal education had already taken place at the Academy, and that she actually preferred her own home library to the one at Seminary school (Morehouse 6). Milton and Shakespeare were among her favorites, but she also delighted in the works of female writers such as Elizabeth Barrett Browning and the Brontes. Dickinson read and considered both what was new and what was classic (Morehouse 6). Ironically, she had to smuggle in poetry, the very genre of work that she is famous for, because it was perceived by her father to be works of pure imagination and hence frivolous and indulgent to read (Morehouse 6). Although she professed to fear her father, Dickinson fortunately seemed to have a sense of humor concerning the peculiarities of all members of her family (Morehouse 61).

During the 1850s, Amherst was a center for the evangelical ardor that swept the northeast during the middle of the century (6). Emily Dickinson ceased going to church during this time, while her close girlhood friends were accepted into the church. In a poem, Dickinson wrote Some Keep the Sabbath Going to Church--/ I keep it staying at Homeó (Kennedy and Goia 67). This reflects the fact that she was pursuing an independent spiritual journey, despite social pressures.


Much speculation surrounds the crises that drove her to poetic expression and her reclusive behaviors. From 1858-1861 Dickinson composed three passionate romantic Master letters to an unknown male audience. The identity of this lover remains under speculation. Some suggest Charles Wadsworth or Samuel Bowles, both married men who she presumably had romantic attachments to. Other candidates include Susan and her friend Kate Scott Anthon Turner (Eberwein 565). It is during this time that Dickinson Begins to claim her poetic identity; writing is her sole province (Morehouse 6).


Instead of completing the domestic chores that were expected of her in the Puritan ideas of self-sacrifice, Dickinson formed her own version of domesticity and sewed her own manuscripts into books that had to wait until the world was ready for them (Morehouse 6). These booklets, known now as fascicles, contained poems which remarkable for their distilled wit, ambiguous manner, and stylistic idiosyncrasies (Eberwein 564). The poems were shared with close friends and family, but not offered for publication until after her death. In fact, very few of her poems were published during her lifetime, reports vary between just two (The International Dictionary of Womens Biography 144), seven (Kennedy and Goia 6), and ten (Eberwein 564), although she composed 1775 known poems (Kennedy and Goia 6). It is evident through her poetry, as well as her actions, that Dickinson valued her privacy and did not necessarily desire to risk the fate of literary celebrity.

This could have at least partially accounted for her reclusive lifestyle. Dickinson took great pleasure in gardening, reading, friendships and nurturing Austin and Sues three children (Eberwein 565). She also took care of her invalid mother with Lavina. It seems as though Dickinson was constantly confronted with grief, as many of her family members and loved ones passed away. In her early poems, she coped width religious doubt. Her later writings, especially her letters, suggest an increasingly hopeful sense of her relationship with God (Eberwein 565). She remained fierce, witty, and physical, a poet who described her position as a woman and poet in terms of paradox and extremes My life had stood--/ a Loaded Gun(Morehouse 64). Emily Dickinson died, possibly of kidney failure, on May 15, 1886 at the age of 55 years. Interestingly, her coffin was not carried through the streets of the town which she inhabited her entire life, but through the fields, sweet with clover and wild flowers she had loved (Morehouse 64-65). Following her death, her sister Lavina came upon a box of fascicles and other manuscripts and decided to display Emily Dickinsons genius to the world. Higginson assisted with the publication and promotion, and in 180 Poems by Emily Dickinson was published. From 180 until the mid-twentieth century, nine posthumous collections of her poems were published by friends and relatives (Kennedy and Goia 6). If the reclusive and antisocial Emily Dickinson had been known only public achievements, she would have soon been forgotten (Eberwein 565).

Who's In Charge


The setting in both "A Rose for Emily" and "The Yellow Wall-Paper" show us the role


that women played in society. When comparing these two stories it is obvious to see that both


settings are very similar in many ways. The women in both of these stories play an inferior role to


a male. For example in "A Rose for Emily" Emily's father seems to make all of her decisions for


her. He does this by rejecting all of her possible mates that are presented to her. He thinks that


Emily is to good for any of the men. By doing this he is giving Emily no chance to start a family


of her own in the future making Emily depressed and for the most part insane.


As for " The Yellow Wall-Paper" there is a similar situation. The narrator's husband


makes her stay in a confined room with nothing to do but sleep. He takes away any type of


stimulation or any kind of activities leaving her with nothing to do but sleep. In his opinion the


only way to cure the narrators temporary nervous depression was to make her sleep. The narrator


had no say so as to what she thought would help her problem. She was ordered by her husband


and she did it. [As the same for Emily and her father.]When Emily's father refused all of her


possible mates, she had no say so in the matter as well. Her father didn't care to see how Emily


felt about any of her mates. Both of the male figures made decisions for these women without


hearing what they had to think or say about their situations.


Throughout both of these stories the women are oppressed by a male figure and in both


these stories the women end up becoming insane. The situations that the women are put through


make both the women that much worse. In "the wall-paper" the narrator says that " all she needs


is congenial work with excitement and change."(Gilman 10) Instead her husband wanted her to

do the total opposite and have no excitement and no change. This drives the narrator to resent her


husband every time he opens his mouth. She could not stand to be in that same dull room with the


same dull wallpaper anymore.


The setting is a major factor for the women's insanity. In "a rose" Emily's father dies


leaving her no clue as to what to do. She has never had the chance to experience a life on her own.


She has always had her dad to tell her what to do and when to do it. Now that he's gone she has


no life. She is not a social person. The only person she really ever talked to her was her father.


Eventually she becomes a recluse and very rarely would ever leave the house. By this time the


whole town has noticed that Emily was secluding herself from the world. They see her as an


unapproachable person because they know that she has gone crazy. Well, Emily finally has a


chance at a relationship with a man by the name of Homer Barron. Soon she finds out that Homer


is not a marrying man. Now knowing that this is probably her last chance to start a relationship


and a family of her own she can't take it. This is the last straw that sends her over the top.


Wanting to keep her one true love she orders arsenic poison. She engraves Homers initials into a


toiletry set, buys an outfit and a night shirt for him. She eventually kills Homer by giving him the


poison. Just the thought of losing something that her father had kept from her all her life was too


much to bear. Forty years later when the townspeople finally get the courage to enter the house


they find a bridal tomb; a tarnished toiletry set, a neatly pressed suit, and a rotting Homer Barron


wearing the the night shirt with a "profound and fleshless grin (Gilman 5). Her father and the


townspeople see her as an untouchable idol bring about this situation; the loneliness that they force


on her is maddening.


In "the wallpaper" it should come as no surprise that the narrator in this story becomes


crazed after months of lying in bed with no company other than her overprotective husband and


his extremely annoying sister. Just as Emily takes Homer's life because of the resentment towards


her father, the narrator in Gilmans story destroys the wallpaper in resentment to her husbands

captivity. The wallpaper confines her,it irritates her, and makes her insane. Referring to the


wallpaper as her husband. In "the wallpaper" the main image of the setting symbolizes the


narrators role in society, and the woman trapped behind the wallpaper is symbolic of herself. For


instance, when she says " I've pulled off most of the paper,so you can't put me back" (Gilman


115). The narrator is trying to break free from her husbands demands and rule over her. So by


tearing the wallpaper down represents her breaking away from her husbands commands.


In both of these stories the women are subject to the decisions made by a male figure. In


my opinion the outcome of both of these stories is the same . By the end of both stories the


women had become insane due to a male figure. The setting in both of these stories fit them well


and at the end had something to do with the downfall of the women. In my opinion these two

merely punching prices into a cash register, hardly a state-of-the-art


process by any means. Most of the jobs I have worked at were more


labor-oriented jobs, so I suppose that is why this is kind of a change


for me. These days I wait tables at a local bar and grill. I have


worked at restaurants like this before, but none of those places were


dependent on a computer like this one is. For example, at my old job,


when we took orders for drinks we scribbled it down on a sheet of


paper and then threw it at the bartender along with another ten people


so he could try and figure out just what the heck was written down.


This process seemed to take forever. Now all I have to do is go to


the computer, press a couple of buttons, and voila, the bartender gets


a clear printout of what needs to be made. And with any luck, the


drinks should be ready by the time I get to the bar. Needless to say


I like the method of using the computer much better than the old way


of writing everything down. This has also solved a lot of problems of


the same kind in the kitchen, also. As having the experience of being


a cook at one time, there was nothing that got on my nerves more than


trying to read the handwriting of someone who had to take an order in


a room filtering out more than 150 people making noise while trying to


jot everything down as fast as they can. As you can probably imagine,


this turns into a lose-lose situation for the people trying to work


through all of this. The cook is mad at the server for not being able


to write the order in plain English. The server is mad at the cook


for always being so critical and not worrying about themselves.


Eventually the person who is effected most by all of this is the


customer. What happens is the cook finally just doesnt care about


the order anymore and doesnt prepare a good meal, or the server gets


ticked off at the cook and ends up taking out their frustration on the


customer who doesnt get the quality of service that they deserve.


That is a whole bunch of problems that came out of just one tiny


little detail, that being not writing the order clearly enough. At my


current job, when a food order is taken, the same process is followed


by simply pushing the right series of buttons for what the customer


ordered. After this, a copy of the order is printed out in the


kitchen and is very easy to read. This makes it hard for the cook to


blame anybody else other than themselves for any problems that occur.


There never has to be any guessing games as to what the server was


trying to write down. But there are a few drawbacks to this system,


it seems that every computer is a little bit different and you cant


expect everybody in the workplace to become an expert on that


particular computer that is there. Henry David Thoreaus statement


saying men have become tools of their tools can definitely true in


this case. I have had it happen to me where I accidentally hit the


wrong button at the wrong time and the computer froze up. One time it


took me almost ten minutes to figure out what I had done wrong and fix


it. I had truly been at the mercy of technology at this time. All in


all I definitely feel that, in this case, a business is better off


using technology than going without it. On the basis of his


statement, Thoreau would probably disagree with me saying that this


technology is only the beginning. Before long there will be robots


and computers waiting the tables, cooking the food, and mixing the


drinks. He might suggest that eventually only one person will be


needed to run such a business, and that person is the one who supplies


all of the capital and buys the equipment. Then the place would just


run itself, while that person sits back and reaps the benefits. My


counter-argument would be this, so long as there are people in this


world who are interested in getting the most value for their dollar,


they would rather be at a place where they are treated like a person,


by a person. The alternative option is this, every time you want or


need a service, you will become nothing more than an invoice number.


You will talk to a computer about what ever is your current need, and


then if you are lucky, that need will be quickly satisfied. The truth


is nobody really wants to be an invoice number. So as far as society


being taken over by technology completely, I cant imagine that will


ever happen. I believe that we as a society will use technology to


every advantage possible, but it will always be used to our advantage


and it will always improve the quality of our lives.


We need to be sure that we stick with our values and make sure


that technology doesnt get out of hand. A lot of people disagree on


what exactly is too much technology. In my opinion we can always keep


adding technology to our everyday lives as long as the technology


isnt manipulated to the point that we have to take advantage of and


exploit other people in order to get ahead. I know it would be great


if everything worked out that way, but as we all know we dont live in


a perfect world and no matter what the scenario is, somebodys toes


have to get stepped on if anybody wants to rise to the top.


Another problem I can see arising is people letting technology


overcome their lives and eventually they will be overcome by laziness.


Erich Fromm was also aware of this problem when he wrote his essay


Work in an Alienated Society by stating the following It is not


difficult to recognize the widespread longing for the state of


complete laziness and passivity. Our advertising appeals to it even


more than to sex. It is amazing what kind of perspective Fromm had

people today are willing to spend huge sums of money on something that


will make a task easier and effortless, whether or not it will do a


quality and efficient job. As long as they dont have to use up too


much energy, the consumer is happy they got the job done, never mind

As far as computers in the workplace go, in my example of having


computers put to use in a restaurant doesnt cause the workers to


become lazy. It enables the business to operate more efficiently, and


that is something that everybody looks forward to, including the


owners, managers, employees, and most importantly the customers. The


morale of the employees where I work now is ten times greater than


that of where I worked before. Simply put, the environment that I get


to work in is fun. It may sound strange to give computers all of the


credit but I believe that having computers in this setting have


contributed to an all-around better business which has shown up in the


revenue generated by this particular business.


As much as I have praised the presence of computers in a


restaurant setting there are a few setbacks, of which are greatly


outnumbered by the positive aspects. The most prominent setback


incurred by these computers that I have seen is the training-in


process. As I said earlier everyone of these computers is different,


so even if you have had prior experience with computers in a similar


setting, you will be basically starting from scratch when it comes


time to learn a new computer. Personally I have been at my present


job for about a month and-a-half and I am still learning how to use


the computer. It seems like every day I learn something new on that


thing and, at times, I think it has a personal vendetta against me.


But on the other hand, about 5% of the time it helps me to do my job


better. It would be interesting to see how many complaints I would


have if I had to write out everybodys orders and bills. With my


handwriting, chances are I wouldnt have lasted a week in that place.


In todays society, the main issue of technology is ethics,


people are afraid that technology can be corrupting, and with good


reason. However, I think that people feel this way because they are

Death Penalty Argument There are four main reasons for punishment rehabilitation (to return someone to a former status), reformation (to re-form or re-create an individual), deterrence (to deter others or to deter the person punished), and retribution (an eye for an eye). Many abolition supporters quote, the death penalty is not a deterrent. Many abolitionist also add there is NO deterrent for a murderer (there will always be a few individuals that are up for a challenge no matter what the consequences are for their crimes in my opinion). Since jail is neither a deterrent in essence, according to those that wish to abolish the death penalty, how long before jail time for murderers would be their next punishment to target for removal from our books. One argument states that the death penalty does not deter murder. Dismissing capital punishment on that basis requires us to eliminate all prisons as well because they do not seem to be any more effective in the deterrence of crime. Others say that states which do have the death penalty have higher crime rates than those that dont, that a more severe punishment only inspires more severe crimes. I must point out that every state in the union is different. These differences include the populations, number of cities, and yes, the crime rates. Strongly urbanized states are more likely to have higher crime rates than states that are more rural, such as those that lack capital punishment. The states that have capital punishment have it because of their high crime rate, not the other way around. Abolitionists claim that there are alternatives to the death penalty. They say that life in prison without parole serves just as well. Certainly, if you ignore all the murders criminals commit within prison when they kill prison guards and other inmates, and also when they kill decent citizens upon escape, like Dawud MuMin who was serving a 48-year sentence for the 17 murder of a cab driver when he escaped a road work gang and stabbed to death a storekeeper named Gadys Nopwasky in a 188 robbery that netted $4.00. Fortunately, there is now no chance of MuMin committing murder again. He was executed by the state of Virginia on November 14, 17. Another flaw is that life imprisonment tends to deteriorate with the passing of time. Take the Moore case in New York State for example. In 16, James Moore raped and strangled 14-year-old Pamela Moss. Her parents decided to spare Moore the death penalty on the condition that he be sentenced to life in prison without parole. Later on, thanks to a change in sentencing laws in 18, James Moore is eligible for parole every two years! If Pamelas parents knew that they couldnt trust the state, Moore could have been executed long ago and they could have put the whole horrible incident behind them forever. Instead they have a nightmare to deal with biannually. Ill bet not a day goes by that they dont kick themselves for being foolish enough to trust the liberal sham that is life imprisonment and rehabilitation. (According to the US Department of Justice, the average prison sentence served for murder is five years and eleven months.) Putting a murderer away for life just isnt good enough. Laws change, so do parole boards, and people forget the past. Those are things that cause life imprisonment to weather away. As long as the murderer lives, there is always a chance, no matter how small, that he will strike again. And there are people who run the criminal justice system who are naive enough to allow him to repeat his crime. Abolitionists claim that the death penalty is un-constitutional by quoting the eighth amendment which forbids cruel and unusual punishment. Cruel and unusual has never been defined by our founding fathers, but lets examine the issue anyway. Where does the Supreme Court stand on the cruel and unusual claim of the abolitionists? In several cases the Justices of the Supreme Court have held that the DP is not cruel and/or unusual , and is in fact, a Constitutionally acceptable remedy for a criminal act. There are those who insist that the Constitution does not support the death penalty. This is simply not true. The Fifth Amendment states "No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, except in cases arising in the land or naval forces, or in the militia, when in actual service in time of War or public danger; nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb; nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself, nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor shall private property be taken for public use, without just compensation." There is a popular saying that only God has the right to take a human life. But nowhere in the bible is this statement confirmed. When a society ignores their moral duty to defend the safety and security of their decent citizens and leaves them at the mercy of violent criminals, they are not being civilized, they are being negligent. I am certain that there will come a time when all the nations in the world will be forced to agree after decades of experience on this issue, that capital punishment, like the military and the police force and taxes, is an inevitable and unavoidable consequence of every civilized society and it will no longer be a question of whether or not a nation should have the death penalty, but rather how it should be used. While I believe that prompt and consistent executions would have a deterrent effect, there remains one great virtue, even for infrequent executions. The recidivism rate for capital punishment is zero. No executed murderer has ever killed again. You cant say that about those sentenced to prison, even if you are an abolitionist. By giving a murderer the death penalty, we are treating him with the same respect he treated his victim. We are giving them what they deserve, exactly what they did to the victim. If someone kills and only receives 15 years in jail, this is stating that the victim's life was only worth 15 years. When in reality, the person's life was worth another person's life. Even life in jail, is still giving the murderer partial freedom, this freedom is to live. By taking his life, he is losing freedom, which is exactly what he took away from his victim. Equal treatment and justice demands a punishment that matches the crime. Capital punishment for premeditated murder provides exactly this. The death penalty is the only punishment, if any that will deter anyone from committing such the horrible crime of murder. The thing that most people fear most is death. If anything will stop the murderer from killing it is the thought that he might die himself. If he kills a victim, he kills himself. This if any will be the only hope that less murders will occur. Any other punishment is reversible, death isn't. My group feels that the killing of another human being without reason is cold and cruel, and should never go without an equal sentence. To murder someone shows that you have no conscience and are very liable to do the same thing again, if you were to get the chance. There is no way of guaranteeing that the convict will never kill again, he could be let out on bail or escape from jail. The murderer will kill and kill until he is caught again. Andrew Jackson was born on March 15, 1767, in a settlement on


the border of North and South Carolina. He was orphaned at age 14.


After studying law and becoming a member of the Bar in North Carolina


later he moved to Nashville Tennessee. Their he became a member of a


powerful political faction led by William Blount. He was married in


171 to Rachel Donelson Robards, and later remarried to him due to a


legal mistake in her prior divorce in 174.


Jackson served as delegate to Tenn. in the 176 Constitutional


convention and a congressman for a year (from 176-7). He was elected


senator in 177, but financial problems forced him to resign and


return to Tennessee in less than a year. Later he served as a


Tennessee superior court judge for six years starting in 178. In 1804


he retired from the bench and moved to Nashville and devoted time to


business ventures and his plantation. At this time his political


career looked over.


In 1814 Jackson was a Major General in the Tennessee Militia,


here he was ordered to march against the Creek Indians (who were


pro-British in the war of 181). His goal was achieved at Horseshoe


Bend in March of 1814. Eventually he forced All Indians from the area.


His victorys impressed some people in Washington and Jackson was put


in command of the defense of New Orleans. This show of American


strength made Americans feel proud after a war filled with military


defeats. Jackson was given the nickname Old Hickory, and was treated


as a national hero.


In 1817 he was ordered against the Seminole Indians. He pushed


them back into Spanish Florida and executed two British subjects.


Jackson instead that his actions were with approval of the Monroe


administration. His actions helped to acquire the Florida territory,


and he became a provisional governor of Florida that same year.


In 18 the Tennessee Legislature nominated him for president


and the following year he was elected the U.S. senate. He also nearly


won the presidential campaign of 184 however as a result of the


corrupt bargain with Henry Clay. Over the next four years the


current administration built a strong political machine with


nationalistic policies and a lack of concern of states rights. In 188


through a campaign filled with mud slinging on both sides, Andrew


Jackson became the seventh President to the United States.


Instead of the normal cabinet made up by the president, he


relied more on an informal group of newspaper writers and northern


politicians who had worked for his election. I believe that this made


him more in contact with the people of the United States, more in


contact with the public opinion and feelings toward national issues


President Jackson developed the system of rotation in office. This


was used to protect the American people from a development of a


long-standing political group by removing long-term office holders.


His enemies accused him of corruption of civil service for political


reasons. However, I think that it was used to insure loyalty of the


people in his administration. States rights played an important part


in Jacksons policys as president. In the case of the Cherokee


Indians vs. The State of Georgia, two Supreme Court decisions in 181


and 18 upholding the rights of the Cherokee nation over the State of


Georgia who had wanted to destroy Cherokee jurisdiction on its land


because gold had been found on it, and the state seeing the Indians as


tenants on state land decided to kick them out. Chief Justice John


Marshall ruled that Georgia had no jurisdiction to interfere with the


rights of the Cherokee and removal of them would violate treaties


between them and the U.S. Government. However, Jackson, not liking


these decisions was reported of saying John Marshall has made his


decision, now let him enforce it. It seems to me like a slap in


Justice Marshalls face, that Jackson was and always will be an Indian


fighter. I think he just liked pushing around the Indians because he


new that whatever resistance they had was no match for the U.S. army.


To emphasize his point, in 188 (one year after Jackson left office),


a unite of federal troops rounded up the 15,000 Cherokee who resisted


relocation and remained in Georgia and during the cold and rain of


winter forced them to march to their lands in the west, this was known


as the Trail of Tears since about 5% of the people died in route of


either disease, starvation, and exposure to the cold. Even though


Jackson wasnt in office at the time and is not a part of his


presidency, his effluence still existed through his predecessor,


Martin Van Burin.


The question of the tariff was a major controversy in the


United States around the years of his Presidency and his strong


support for a unified nation oven states rights would hold the country


together in this national crisis. Jackson had promised the south a


reduction in duties to levels established in 188, which were


acceptable to southerners as opposed to the higher rates since then.


In 18 his administration only sliced away a little bit of the


duties, not close to what the south expected he would do. In


retaliation of this insulting lack of concern of the Souths voice in


government, South Carolina acting on the doctrine of Nullification


which stated that the union was made up of the states and that the


states had the right to null or void a law if they didnt agree with


it, declared the federal tariff laws of 188 and 18 invalid and


prohibited collection of tariffs after February first of 18.


Jacksons response to this came on his Nullification Proclamation on


December 10, 18. He declared his intent to enforce the law and was


willing to seek and agreement in a lowering of tariffs. In 18


congress passed a compromise bill which set a new tariff, when the


other southern states accepted the new tariff the threat of S.


Carolina breaking away form the union was brought to a happy end.


The Second Bank of the United States was not made into an


issue of his election in 188 by Jackson. However he decided the bank,


which is not a government bank, but chartered by it in 186, had


failed to provide a stable currency, and had favored the Northern


states, and few loans were granted to the southern and western areas


because they were a larger risk and the bank didnt see it in its


interest to make such a gamble with its money. And in his mind the


bank was in violation on the Constitution. Even though the banks


charter wasnt due to expire until 186, Jacksons political enemies


pushed a bill through congress granting the banks re-charter, Jackson


vetoed the bill. The Bank issue was a major item in his re-election


in 18. In his second term Jackson decided to remove federal deposits


from the bank into pet banks which virtually took away the power


Nicholas Biddles power as president of the Second National Bank,


which left him and anti-Jackson people very upset with what they


called the abuse of his powers. The increase in loans from the state


chartered caused a land boom and gave the federal government a surplus


(which it split up amongst the states), the increase in loans brought


on the use of paper currency that was issued by the state banks,


Jackson prohibited the use of paper money to by federal land or pay


federal debts. This demand for coins called specie led to many bank


failures in the Panic of 187. I dont think he knew what he got


himself into when he did this, and could of handled the situation a


little better, but not all the blame should fall on his shoulders,


because it wasnt his fault the private state-chartered banks issued


the paper money when they didnt have the specie to back it up.


Jacksons foreign policy showed a strong interest in making


the French to pay long-overdue spoliation claims and reopening the


British West Indian Trade. Even thought he personally agreed with the


rebellion of Texas against Mexico. He didnt recognize the Lone Star


republic until the day before he left office in 187, and left the


problem of Texas annexation to Martin Van Buren. Even though Jackson


switched support form his successor Martin Van Buren to James K. Polk


(probably due to Van Burins failed economic policy). Jackson was a


powerful voice in the Democratic party even after retired. He died on


June 8, 1845 on his plantation, the Hermitage, in Nashville Tennessee.


Andrew Jackson was the first peoples president. This comes


from hisyouth in a frontier territory and his people qualities


which helped him to be more touch with the people of the United


States, and therefore the people of the United States took a more


active role in the Government. He even went so far as to call himself

Organizational culture can be defined as a system of shared beliefs and values that develops within an organization and guides the behavior of its members. It includes routine behaviors, norms, dominant values, and a feeling or climate conveyed. The purpose and function of this culture is to help foster internal integration, bring staff members from all levels of the organization much closer together, and enhance their performance.


However, there seems to be a widely held misconception that throughout an organization or within a specific division there is only one uniform culture that exists. This definition does not seem adequate because it fails to recognize that in many organizations there are quite often groups that are unique of the dominant culture. They may have values that are not consistent, or outwardly reject the culture as a whole, yet at the same time they are still able to maintain their position within the firm. In addition, it has been a personal experience that in many organizations strong organizational culture can in fact be negative, and in fact actually damage the performance of their employees. The perception is due to the fact that in many organizations the culture can act as a barrier to the employee to gain status within the organization.


This perception may have also had a lot to due with the nature of the position that was held at the company. This company seemed to fit the criteria and meet the description of a "Fortress Culture? This may have been the result of the fact that it business was in the highly competitive field of financial services. The management was very preoccupied with figures such as sales, growth and earnings, and they treated the staff as a commodity that could easily be replaced. As a contract employee there was little in the way of job security and essential no possibility to be rewarded for good performance. The theory is inadequate because it does not recognize the fact that in many businesses today, firms no longer retain all of their staff on a full-time basis. It simply assumes that many of the individuals are full time staff members and at least have short-term job certainty. It fails to recognize the fact that by having many individuals that are working in organizations as part time or contract staff is not really given the opportunity, or they do not wish to become part of the organizational culture. Hence they elect not to internalize the company's culture and in turn establish their own distinct sub-culture of individuals that share their own beliefs.


Many of the fail points within the organization could be traced directly back to its socialization process. The socialization process is the process by which an organization brings new employees into its culture. The older members of the society transmit to younger members the social skills and knowledge needed to function effectively in the organization. This process of the organization develops the skills and competencies needed to perform the new job. Although the company seemed to be successful in the first two steps the remainder of the process seemed to be inconsistent with this theory.


The company followed the traditional pattern of selecting potential candidates through the use of trained recruiters and a standardized procedure. These recruiters looked for a variety of specific traits in each candidate that they believed would make them suitable for the position at the firm. Those individuals that did not meet these strict criteria were not considered for the position. The organization also had many similarities with the next step in which the successful candidates were placed in many challenging environments, or impossible situations to test their commitment to the position. The theory then suggests that at this point in the process those individuals who are not willing to accept the culture would be removed and all others allowed to proceed. Yet this does not seem to be adequate for two reasons. To begin with the theory does not account for the fact that in reality many individuals to not actual accept the norms and values but they simply give off the appearance that they do in an attempt to retain their position. Quite often individuals never really become part of the dominant culture yet merely they try to give that impression so that they are not dismissed. Secondly, it falls short in the case of many individuals that have been hired as a contract employee. Not having the certainty and job security of a full time staff member makes individuals less open towards the organization's norms and values. By not having the confidence in their future at the firm individuals are likely to be very reluctant to make the effort and try to become part of the team, and eventually the firm's culture.


In addition the candidates did not receive the extensive training that was needed to help develop their skills and perform the routine tasks of this very demanding position. This may have been a result of the fact that the company was unsure whether they would retain the services of the new staff. This in turn made many of the new recruits feel inadequate when compared to their full-time counterparts. Hence they did not feel part of the team and part of the organization. It also had the unintentional effect of reinforcing the feeling among many individuals that the company was not committed to them and that they did not want to make the investment in their training since they were uncertain whether they would keeping them as members of the organization.


There was also the feeling among the staff members that if the company was not committed to them for a specific length of time what importance is there for them to make the effort and try to belong to the company's culture. The socialization theory simply concluded that the staff and the firm would work together in promoting these shared beliefs and the only recourse of this system did not work was to dismiss those individuals that deviated from the norm. It did not recognize that there could be failings within the process that may have required change on the part of the organization.


What may have also been a contributing factor to the failure of the socialization process, and an element that is not discussed in the theory, is how the socialization process works when the field of business is of a very competitive nature. In this case is does not seem that many of the older staff members would be willing to accept the new staff and help them develop their skills. This is due to the fact that if the new members performed the skills of the position better and more efficiently than the older staff it would have the effect of undermining the older staff members job security. It seemed more common that the existing staff would erect barriers for the new staff. They would do this in an attempt to secure the permanence of their position.


In this case if the organization wanted to maintain competition between its staff members what may have been a more appropriate action would be for their socialization process to be much more rapid. This is because it would have had the likely effect of reducing much of the uncertainty, and surrounding the new position. This is especially important for those individuals that were on a contract basis since they believed ahead of time that they were only going to remain at the position for a very short time, and thus there was no reason for them to be very productive.


Much of the uncertainty surrounding the position was also a reflection of the managerial style of the department head. He believe that the organization could maintain its identity and culture by constantly removing employees who deviated from his narrow and rigid opinion of accepted behavior and job performance. He believed that uncertainty in the organizations would make individuals within the workplace be more productive and remain in line with the firm's notion of accepted norms and behaviors. The manager achieved this by regularly relying on firings, fear, and quilt to build the organization. In fact, this attitude had the exact opposite outcome. In prolonging the socialization period and by constantly making the individual feel inadequate the individual never really felt part of the culture. As a result these individuals quite often did not make the effort of buying into the values and norms of the company. This resulted in job dissatisfaction, low work motivation, tension, high turnover, rejection of values (which in many cases resulted in other subcultures), and an overall lack of commitment to the firm.


The company would have been much more successful if the manager were to try and promote the culture in a more positive way. This could be achieved by trying to establish a sense of pride and enthusiasm in the firm rather that requiring each individual to strictly adhere to a narrow and rigid behavior. In doing so the firm would more likely have a much more devote staff since they feel more comfortable about their position in the firm and the future. The staff would be encouraged by the fact that they feel part of the team and hence they would be more proactive, productive and add value to the company.


The theory seems to adequately explain how the organization failed to achieve their goal through the example of sharedness and intensity. Sharedness refers to the degree to which the organizational members have the same core values. The intensity is the level of commitment that the members of the organization make to the core values. Two major factors, orientation and rewards affect the degree of sharedness. In order for people to share the same cultural values they must know what these values are. This can be directly linked to their orientation and training programs. However, it is also significantly affected by rewards. When organizations offer promotions, raises, recognition, to those who adhere to the core values, it helps other individuals within the organization understand what the values are.


The degree of intensity can also be connected to the reward structure. When individuals realize that they will be rewarded for doing things the "Corporate Way?their desire to do so increases dramatically. Therefore, as the theory suggests if individuals, like contract staff or part-timers, did not feel part of the reward structure, because they did not receive the perks of the position or equal pay. In addition, these members of the organization did not also receive any non-financial rewards either.
