I came to the United States for two reasons, excel my skills and learn a new language to succeed in life. I came to finish my last year of high school, in a school close to my house in the south west of Phoenix. Being a monolingual Spanish-speaking was very difficult to overcome each obstacle. I knew that one the worst of my problems would be this new language, English. For my surprise in this high school instead of teaching me in English, instructors were teaching their classes in Spanish. This experience disappointed me, because I was expecting a high school where all the instructors and students as well speak English only.
I told my parents about this atrocious experience, and we decided go talk to my counselor. We asked him to put me in regular classes, where I can get acquainted with native English speakers. To our surprise he refused to accept our request. He told us that those were not the rules in this high school; that a foreign student not speaking of English must pass for a process of bilingual classes before they can take regular classes. As a consequence, I decided to move to another high school in Peoria. This high school was completely different than the one that I went before. There were not Spanish classes, not bilingual instructors, and not even Hispanic students. I was the only Hispanic going to this high school, and to tell you the truth that scared me. Well, as time went by the school year ended and my English actually had improved. I could not believe that now I can read, speak, listening and even write in English and the most impressive thing is that all happened in only one year.
