After so long of not being truly frightened by teen killer movies, here's a movie that comes along and finally scares the wits out of you. No, there's no masked killer running around picking off adolescents while they frantically and pointlessly seek escape. Instead this movie actually manages to scare you, the real way; with some honestly frightening schemes.
The movie starts out with a small threesome of servants, who arrive at a house in response to an ad for some caretakers, from the house's owner, Grace. A scary theme is quickly set, when during a tour of the house, Grace informs the servants that when you enter a room, you must lock the door the behind you before you open the next door. This keeps the house completely dark, which is necessary to protect her two children, Anne and Nicolas, who are both allergic to light. Soon after the servants start working there, they discover that Anne has seen other people in the house. The plot continues to unravel in an ever expanding, and quite thrilling ride that is sure to make any person's nerves scream in horror. However, the most notable part of the movie is the ending. The only film with an ending comparable to this one is "The Sixth Sense," which is still not quite as strong. Whatever you could possibly imagine for this ending will be twisted around and thrown back at you in an endearingly frightful mess. When the credits roll and the lights come on, you'll be feeling a small sense of glee mixed with an overcast eeriness, that is sure to haunt you even after you leave the theatre.
Nicole Kidman's did an excellent performance in this movie. Her beauty and rigidness distinctively helped to accent the Victorian age feeling of the movie, and at the same time, she was able to keep that look of horror pasted on her face. Her two children also did an excellent job in their roles, acting mature for their age at times, and at other times, acting as frightened little children. This movie was definitely accented with some very nice casting.
