In Macbeth, Shakespeare illustrates mans desire to achieve power. Shown through his characters, Shakespeare writes of a man who gains knowledge of his future and with his wife embarks on atrocities to fulfill them. Wanting more and more power both the man and his wife are driven mad by there own desire and then eventually to death.

Macbeth, a Scottish general and loyal friend of Duncan (king of Scotland), achieves knowledge of his future from three witches. First addressing him as Thane of Glamis, his known title, the witches then continue to hail him Thane of Cawdor and king of Scotland. Macbeth takes this information and at first dismisses it, later learning that his title as Thane of Cawdor comes true. Macbeth sends word to his wife informing her of the witches' prophecies "…these weird sisters saluted me, and referred me to the coming on of time, with 'Hail, king that shalt be!' This have I thought good to deliver thee, my dearest partner of being ignorant of what greatness is promised thee." (1.4, line 8). In this quote we begin to see Macbeth embrace his future.

Lady Macbeth showing no uncertainty of her and her husband's future; she devises a plan to kill Duncan. "..Thou wouldst be great; Art not without ambition, but without the illness should attend it..." (1.5, line17). Constantly challenging his manhood, Lady Macbeth gets Macbeth to kill the king. Macbeth having second thoughts of doing this, Lady Macbeth's dauntless spirit sways him to do it. "I have given suck, and know how tender 'tis to love the babe that milks me- I would, while it was smiling in my face, have plucked my nipple from his boneless gums, and dashed the brains out, had I so sworn as you have done to this." (1.7, line 54). After Duncan has died, his sons flea the country and Macbeth is given the crown. Seeing that all that the witches has said has come true, Macbeth now felt threaten by Banquo. "Thou shalt get kings though thou be none." (1., line 67)

Lady Macbeth knew that Macbeth becoming king would give her more power. This is why she wanted to kill Duncan. Her desire of power and her treacherous ways of achieving them, lead Lady Macbeth to death. Lady Macbeth ambition drove her mad. She began to sleep walk and talk in her sleep. Every night she would wake up and scrub herself of Duncan's blood. "Here's the smell of the blood still all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand. Oh! Oh! Oh!" (5.1, line 4). Lady Macbeth would relive conversations that she would have with Macbeth. "Wash you, put on you night-gown, look not so pale I tell you yet again, Banquo's buries; he can not come out on's grave." (5.1, line 58). In the end Lady Macbeth's madness was stronger that her spirit and she committed suicide.

Banquo's sons, according to the witches prophecy, will take over the Scottish throne. Like Macbeth, Banquo thinks ambitious thoughts, but he doesn't put those thoughts into action. "But that myself should be the root and father of many kings. If there come truth from them-as upon thee, Macbeth, their speeches shine- why, by the verities on thee made good, May they not be my oracles as well, and set me up in hope?" (.1, line 5). Banquo's loyalty to his king and his friend would have kept him from doing anything, like what Macbeth and his wife had done. Banquo represents the path that Macbeth chose not to take a path in which ambition doesn't lead to betrayal and murder. Banquo's ghost symbolizes Macbeths guilt for killing, the ghost also reminds Macbeth that he did not imitate Banquos reaction to the witches prediction.

Banquo was killed by Macbeth's ambition. Macbeth knew that the other predictions had come true and was scared that Fleance, Banquo's son would take over. Macbeth hired a group of murderers to ambush Banquo and Fleance. The murderers only kill Banquo and Fleance gets away. Later that night that Banquo was murdered, Macbeth kept seeing Banquo's ghost at the table during his feast. Macbeth addresses the ghost and commands him to leave. "Why, what care I? If thou canst nod, speak too. If charnel-houses and our grave must send those that we bury back, our monuments shall be the maws of kites." (.4, Line 71). Macbeth's company is startled by him. Lady Macbeth begins to cover for him tell the guests to ignore him.

Macbeth ambitions lead him to death and madness also. Macbeth obsessed about knowing the future. He went back to the witches to find out who would kill him and if Fleance would still be king. Macbeth trusts in that he had control of everything, lead him to his own death. If Macbeth had not known that he would become king, would it have still happened? Macbeth's knowledge of his future was necessary for him to succeed his throne. Through out the novel Macbeth feels that he has had control of the future. This in a way is sort of madness. This also leads to his own self destruction.

Vaulting ambition lead to destruction. This is shown in both Lady Macbeth and Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is a deeply striving woman who yearns for power and position. In the play she gives the impression of being stronger and more ruthless than Macbeth. She urges Macbeth to kill Duncan and to take the crown. "Art thou afeard to be the same in thine own act and valour as thou art in desire? Wouldst thou have that which thou esteem'st the ornament of life, and live a coward in thine own esteem, letting 'I dare not' wait upon 'I would', like the poor cat I'th adage?" (1.7, line ). After he kills him, Lady Macbeth becomes full of guilt and is driven to madness to an even greater extent than her husband. Her conscience affects her to such an amount that she eventually commits suicide. Macbeth is led to impious ideas by the predictions of three witches. After their prophecy that he will be made thane of Cawdor comes true, Macbeth is easily tempted into murder to fulfill his aspirations of achieving the throne. Once he commits his first crime and is crowned king of Scotland, he commits crimes with ease. In the end, Macbeth better suited for the battlefield than for political stratagem. His reaction to every dilemma is bloodshed and murder.

In the end your own greed and desire will lead to your own destruction because power corrupts your thoughts. Every response to a problem will be clouded by your own greed. Slowly your desire and greed will drive you mad because you will always be trying to protect it.

Guidelines for the Case Analysis

The purpose of this assignment is to allow you to apply the material in the course to a real life situation and to give you an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas with your group members. Each group will either write a case analysis or make a class presentation.

Here are some pointers for your case analysis. The following set of guidelines is designed to help you with your assignment. If you make sure and cover the three general areas you are likely to improve your chances of putting together a good analysis. I am here to help you in your efforts to complete an effective analysis (but less likely to help when groups wait until the LAST minute!) Please do use these resources.

A good case analysis consists of these three essential components

I. Description and Identification The analysis should begin with a sharply focused summary of the important issues and problems of the company as you see it. Do not provide a detailed history of the company. Make sure your case analysis report is well organized.

II. Analysis and Evaluation The second part of the presentation consists of analyzing the important issues and problem areas and evaluating their impact on the organization. At this stage, an important task expected of you is to apply some of the concepts, theories and techniques we have discussed in this course to the case. You are expected to conduct outside research on the company to provide input to your analysis. Make sure you note down the citations and remember to mention them in your presentation or report. III. Recommendations and Action Plans Once you have described, analyzed and evaluated the company and its issues, the next step is to present recommendations, action plans and or conclusions depending on the individual case. These recommendations should specifically address the problems or issues that you have identified for the company. Always try to substantiate your recommendations with facts and the knowledge that you have acquired in this course. Make sure that your recommendations follow from your analysis. If what you recommend is different from what the company is currently doing then explain why you believe your recommendations are better. If your recommendations are similar to the actions taken by the company, then explain why other alternatives were not feasible. Finally, you are expected to provide an update on the company and explain what is currently happening.

Written Case Analysis (if applicable)

Written analyses must be 15 pages minimum. Standard MLA, APA, or Chicago Format is required as well as all standard rules of grammar and spelling. Please check with the library for use of referencing and styleguides. Considerable points will be deducted for papers written without proper reference style.

Class Presentation (if applicable)

IMPORTANT

1) Make sure you distribute an outline of your presentation to the class.

) Give me a detailed outline of your presentation (including a list of references you used) before you begin the presentation (10% will be deducted if detailed outline is missing).

• The class presentation should be approximately 0 minutes long. You are expected to lead the class discussion following your presentation. This may include answering questions from the class and/or questions you pose to your audience. This could last anywhere from 10 - 15 minutes.

• Use visual aids and speak clearly and loudly. This is a great opportunity for you to practice and develop the oral presentation and analytical skills that are vital to success in the business world. I encourage you to be creative. Mock interviews, sketches, etc. are fine if they are effective in helping you present your case.

Some points to remember

1. Rehearse your presentation. Remember, you only get one chance to present your case. . Make sure you use overheads and that they can be seen clearly from the back of the room. . Do not read from your notes and do use index cards if necessary. 4. Be on time for your presentation. If you need set up time for your presentation, come to class early and be prepared to begin on time. Delays due to lack of preparation on your part will adversely affect your grade. 5. Let me know at least two weeks in advance if you require special equipment for your presentation.

Time yourself. Have a friend or team member signal when you are running out of time. 6. Speak loudly and clearly. 7. Do empathize with the audience and try to make the presentation as relevant and entertaining as possible. Try to get the class to participate in the discussion. Show enthusiasm for the company that your are dealing with and you are likely to get the attention of the audience. 8. Have a contingency plan! Backup your PowerPoint file! Also, group members need to be familiar with one-anothers presentation segment as a contingency for any members absenteeism the day of the presentation.

Peer Evaluation

Each group member is expected to evaluate himself or herself and every other member of the group. These evaluations need to be turned in on the day of the presentation. You may turn these evaluations directly to the instructor if you are concerned about maintaining confidentiality. You must turn in this evaluation on the day it is due to get a grade for the case analysis. The form for the evaluation is included in your syllabus. Please read the procedure for calculating grades on this form.

William Sidney Porter, the man who created "O. Henry," the most Famous American pen name (second only to that of Samuel L. Clemens' "Mark Twain") wrote many short stories. O. Henry was born in North Carolina on September 11th, 186. It is an amazing that he wrote many of his first stories while in prison. His first short story ever to be published was, in fact, published while he was being tried before he was sent to the federal penitentiary in Ohio. O. Henry is best remembered for "The Gift of the Magi" and "The Ransom of Red Chief." Henry had a "trademark" in his short stories. He was known for his surprise endings, which would jump at the unsuspecting reader. O. Henry applied this trick by not giving away all the information the reader needed to fully understand what is going on in the story. In "The Enchanted Kiss" it was no different. In "The Enchanted Kiss" Henry made use of all his genius to create a story with a surprise ending that almost seemed unreal to what he had built the reader to believe.

"The Enchanted Kiss," a romance with a twist, a one-sided romance, is the story of a single night in the life of Samuel Tansey. The story begins with Tansey playing billiards with several of his friends. As the clock ticked along he dreamed about the many courage's acts he had so many times accomplished in the realms of his imagination. When the clock struck ten he got up to leave. His friends in playful manner joked with him about his leave at such an early time. They said

"What's you hurry, Tansey?" called one. "Got another engagement?"

"Tansey got an engagement!" echoed another. "Not on you life. Tansy's got to get home at ten by Mother Peek's orders."

"It's no such thing," Chimed in a pale youth, taking a large cigar from his mouth; "Tansey's afraid to be late because Miss Katie might come downstairs to unlock the door, and kiss him in the hall."

But had they only known that he had for some time secretly been in love with that young lady, Miss Katie Peek. The other fellows played an d talked with her freely but Tanseys character always seemed to get in the way. He barely said Good Evening or Good night. He lived his life in love; so secretly in love. Dreaming tortures dreams in silence because he was afraid to show his feelings.

But [that night] to-night the gibes of his associates had stung him to a feeling of forward, lawless mutiny; a defiant, challenging, atavistic recklessness. Spirit of corsair, adventurer, lover, poet, Bohemian, possessed him.

That night he felt her as fare as the stars in the heavens above and not an inch closer. He, more than ever, felt his constant companion, loneliness; that dreaded shadow following his tired steps. He walked and found a tavern and he drank. He never drank, but tonight, tonight it was different. He drank his share then walked by his shadow through the dark streets of his town. He walked aimlessly for some time till he bumped into a dead-end. Then he sat on the footsteps of a door. He fell in to the arms of slumber and remained in them for some time.

Then he woke-up and walked to where he had come from. At the door stood Captain Peek with a carriage. They talked for a few moments…

…then a white-clad figure sprung out of the carriage, and a shrill voice Katies voice- sliced the air Sam! Sam! help me, Sam!

He sprung towards her and saved her. Took her in his arms and kissed her…

-violets! electricity! caramels! champagne! Here was the attainment of a dream that brought no disenchantment.

She told him the men that were taking her wanted to eat her. He did not take her seriously. Why would they want to eat her? As he was wondering, still enthralled by that enchanted kiss, he was struck on the back of his head and fell deep into another sleep.

Again he woke-up, back at the door-steps at the dead-end, and wondered through the streets until he came to the market place. There he stopped and carried a friendly conversation with one of his old comrades, a Mexican. They both talked about everything and nothing, then, the conversation took an unsuspecting turn. Tanseys Mexican friend asked him if he would like to live forever. The Mexican went on to tell Tansey that he had to eat young women with chili in a certain way to obtain that immortal life. Then Tansey remembered Katies words Theyre going to eat me, Sam. Just then a women ran out of the Mexicans tent saying I have released her, you will kill no more. Then there was another scream and there stood Katie with her arms still bound. Once again Tansey rushed and saved her…

…and then, for the second time that night he kissed Katie Peek tasted again the sweetness, the wonder, and the thrill of it, attained once more the maximum of his incessant dreams.

Just then the Mexican struck him with a knife between the shoulders and he knew nothing more of what happened.

Once again he opened hi eyes and found himself at the steps of that door at the dark dead-end.

Each excursion that he had made had led to the one paramount finale to Katie and that kiss, which survived and grew strong and intoxicating in his memory. Clearly, Fate was holding up to him the mirror that night, calling him to observe what awaited him at the end of whichever road he might take. He immediately turned, and hurried homeward.

He was hesitant in his going. He thought the Miss Peek would be waiting for him, and he didnt want her to wait for him, she was. She waited for him trying to seem uninterested. Then he got home and…

-a maid with unkissed, curling, contemptuous lips slowly lifted the lamp chimney and allowing the wick to ignite; then waving a scornful and abjuring hand toward the staircase-

Then the unhappy Tansey went up fro the night without that wonderful enchanted kiss.

The way O Henry placed himself as the narrator greatly contributed to the story. O Henry placed himself in an omniscient position in which he new everything. He could have, from the beginning of the story, given more solid clues as to the outcome of his whole plot but that would have ruined the effect he set the reader up in. O Henry only gave very petit hints as to how the story was going to unravel. Surprise endings were of common nature in his writing and The Enchanted Kiss was going to be no exception.

Please note that this sample paper on The Enchanted Kiss by "O Henry" is for your review only. What does New Mexico Architectural Style mean? The early settlers in New Mexico came from Mexico and Spain in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. Don Juan de Onate colonized the area above Espanola in 158, one hundred eight years after Columbus came to the Americas. The early settlers of New Mexico were completely familiar with adobe construction methods, which had been developed six to eight thousand years by Moors, who came to Spain in the fifth century and brought the system with them from Egypt and the Middle East.

According to nineteenth-century descriptions Hispanic New Mexican houses are very similar in character to the Mediterranean house. All the rooms opened into the court, and there was a porch or portal running around all four- court walls.

The "Spanish-pueblo" (10s and 10s) is the earliest form and prevalent in Spain at the time of settlement of New Mexico. This is a style where the walls are in adobe from two feet thick to thirty or thirty six inches thick. The relationship between the wall and his thick depend of the height of the wall. The floor of the early houses were in adobe mud smoothes by hand and often were painted with bloom from animals producing a dark, black brown color.

For the roof structure, pine lays across the walls. A layer of straws was laid over this and then about eighteen to twenty-four inches of adobe mud applied. The surface was almost flat,

The territorial style is a combination of several elements. Walls were of adobe with burned brick firewall. Those walls were plastered with lime-sand stucco, which is much better than the cement stucco used today. Windows in the territorial style was set outside face of the wall. The beams were often square with sawn or split boards laid over The burned clay tile roof, typical of modern Spain and Mexico was not found in New Mexico before about 1880.

The New Mexico Architectural Style is rich in details, when artist form other parts of the country invaded the Taos area in the late 1800s and Santa Fe in the 10s a rich creative force as added to the local craft of building.

First, Windows in Pueblo Style were small, barred with wooden gratings and covered with heavy wooden because of the need for defense against Indians and protection from the elements. Sheets of mica were sometimes used between the bars to admit light in the daytime and protection of the wind and cold during the nighttime.

The coming of the railroad brought new architectural styles such as hardware and clear window glass, in that moment window became larger and more decorative. Fancy iron windows became from Mexico in the early 100s. They painted curtains and other design on glass windows. Some churches painted colorful imitation stained glass on windowpanes.

Second, the Spanish colonists for mission churches introduced wooden doors into New Mexico. Before this, blankets or skins were used to keep the cold out of the house. These heavy doors generally lacked metal hinges an arrangement that allowed rotating; they were made from six to eight panels fastened together. Doors in the early days were quite small, only two feet wide and four to five feet high. Most were undecorated

With the arrival of the railroad in the late nineteenth century, New Mexico Architectural began to change drastically. The true frame and panel doors from colonial times were replaced by doors made of strips molding nailed onto milled lumber boards -1/" thick by 4-10 " wide. The native carpenter became to create new and interesting designs. Doors were decorated with elaborated design.

Local carpenter began to construct beautiful doors for adobe farmhouses they elaborated and create old classical styles, using their own variations with sufficient quantities of tools. Actually these doors are known as Penascos doors and the design vary from village to village, and each doors is different from the other.

Finally, The colors used to paint the decorative details on New Mexico's architectural are similar to the colors of the environment such as the intense blue of the sky, the reds found in the sunset, orange in the mountain and the subtler colors in the desert.

Little is known about to paint during the early colonial years, but with few exceptions wood surface were left with protective varnish made from pine resin. The first documented example was in Village Senteros in where they began making retablos (pictures in wood surface) for the churches, using water-soluble pigments, made from different things. In the same way, some furniture and architectural features were painted during this period but after 1880s paints became available.

During the Spanish- Pueblo period of the 10s and 10s was the beginning of the Santa Fe Style, the use of bright colors on architectural details blossomed. However today, most of the gates and doors are not painted; some are left natural, allowed the beauty of the wood and excelling the design to dominate.

Many different kind of paint are used on the architectural features. In exteriors, weather-resistant oil base house paint is popular. In interior is using anything from weathersoluble tempera or an artist oil paint.

In conclusion, New Mexico Architecture Style has a lot of history and one of the way to know about New Mexico State is to know about his architecture because we can see what happened and happen right know. Each part in the architecture has history, windows, doors, and colors are the most important things during the environment in the New Mexico Architectural Style because they show us all the process of our state. Step by step the evolution of our reality and, in spire of, New Mexico Style was, is and will be important in this moment in our life. We life in New Mexico State and this style is with us.

Teams are the ultimate learning tool. Collaborative work efforts provide each team member with the opportunity to grow both by contribution and by absorption. Team work provides an arena where people are put together, by chance or by design, to work towards a common goal. Teams are often made up of diverse groups of people, each one bringing to the table a plethora of ideas, viewpoints, skills, work ethics, stresses and backgrounds. Diversity can enhance or impair the decision-making process and the outcome of a project depending on the adaptability and willingness of the group.

The University of Phoenix has provided each one of its students with the undeniable benefit of working in Learning Teams. A key distinction that significantly impacts learning teams is that no formal leader is assigned or given authority by the school. While teams frequently rely on individual team members to lead specific tasks and projects there is rarely one single individual who has formal leadership or authority over the team and the other members. Teams are thus managed unilaterally as opposed to the traditional method of top to bottom.

At first the idea of having to meet with a team seems like quite a challenge. A challenge that groups two to five strangers together to work on various assignments, which involve setting a time to meet, discussions, agreements and assignment of individual parts of the task to be completed under a six day time constraint. Talk about stressful.

Each team is asked to fill out a team charter, which outlines the strengths and weaknesses of each member, the duties for the week, addresses, phone numbers and deadlines for all assignments. The team charter is certainly a tool that opens up communication from the very beginning. It allows each member to address issues that could possibly affect the productivity of the team assignments as well as a forum for each member to choose to contribute based on areas of strengths or weaknesses. It also provides the team with guidelines that have been established by the group and for the group and as with any other guidelines, are expected to be adhered to or challenged.

Age

Age seems like a pretty insignificant issue, however, it certainly can influence how people in teams interact and work together. ( Schermerhorn, Hunt, & Osborn. Organizational Behavior, 00) For instance, a twenty year old woman thinks much differently than a sixty year old woman does in regard to various issues. An older person has lived a life filled with responsibility, work, whether in the home or outside of the home, to name only a few things. Obtaining a degree for an older woman may be a much more serious task, demanding more study time, while a woman of twenty, who certainly understands the importance of a degree, may spend less time on assignments and may not have to work as hard. Age also influences opinions, beliefs and viewpoints. It influences how we comport ourselves in a multitude of situations. The beauty of putting people together of different ages is that they can and will learn from one another, as has been our team's experience.

Occupation

Varying occupations have allowed our past and present learning teams to draw from the diverse occupations we each have. (Schermerhorn et al, 00) Each class it seems has called for skills across the board, such as knowledge in the fields of, e-procurement, computer technology, employment law, writing, and math. The diverse members of our team have contributed significantly and even picked up the slack for those who were not knowledgeable in certain fields. This has definitely been a bonus when it came to team assignments.

On a few occasions a certain team member who was not able to contribute equally to certain assignments felt as if his share was not equal to the rest of the team, he needed constant reassurance that his contribution was suitable often times causing frustration within the team.

Personality Traits

Personality traits are probably the hardest thing to deal with in a group setting. Our personality traits define each of us as individuals, they outline our communication preferences, recognition needs, work style and management approach. (Schermerhorn et al, 00) Personality traits can and should be recognized in ourselves first so that we can better understand our own needs in order to better understand the needs of those on our team. Secondly recognizing traits as opposed to behavior allows for acceptance of individual task choices which will lead to a better outcome of the assigned project.

Differences in skills and abilities

At this stage of the game, each one of us has probably been in the working world for some time, lending to a differing set of skills and abilities. Our teams have been comprised of a teacher, an e-procurement manager, secretary, a memorial counselor, a temporary employee, an IT specialist, loan consultant and an auto mechanic, each one able to contribute to each and every assignment in his or her own way. Within our team we have been able to learn from one another, and to form relationships that have often called for advice or even services from one member or another. This vast difference in skills has called up patience, understanding and at times a much needed paradigm shift for each one of us.

All of us at some point or another, depending on the assignment have stepped up to fill the role of leader based on our skills or abilities. Not only have we maximized our existing strengths, but we have been allowed the opportunity to strengthen our weaker skills. This has certainly had a positive affect on our learning team.

Conclusion

Learning, as a discipline, is a way of approaching problems and projects that improves both the process and the outcome. Learning teams allow us to take a more holistic approach to a new situation. It is an approach that applies a diversity of knowledge and experience gained from each member. Learning teams allow for developing remarkable capacities for organized action, for producing better results and for developing individual members faster than would have occurred if they had been on their own. Prediction

I think that as the length of the wire increases so will the electrical resistance. Also I predict that my graph may have a strong positive correlation. I will also try to incorporate the equation y = m x + c. This will help me to find out the gradient of the graph. I predict that my graph my look something like this

Apparatus

ɨ Power pack

Cheap custom writing service can write essays on GCSE Physics SC1An experiment to investigate how the electrical resistance of a wire changes in relationship to its length- preliminary

ɨ Ammeter

ɨ Voltmeter

ɨ Wires

ɨ Metre rule with nichrome wire in following thickness'

1. 0.15 mm

. 0.75 mm

. 0.457 mm

4. 0.55 mm

ɨ Crocodile clips

Preliminary Method

I set up the experiment as follows

Aime Fitzpatrick 10a

I set my ammeter up in series and my voltmeter up in parallel. Then I then turned on the power pack, after my teacher checked my experiment to make sure it was safe, and changed that dial so that the voltmeter was at volts. This was kept constant throughout the experiment. The only thing that I changed was the length of nichrome. I tried to keep the temperature constant by finishing all the experiment on one day because otherwise the particles may move quicker if the temperature is increased. I then recorded the results of the amps in a table. (See below) I recorded the results of the highest and lowest measurement of each thickness of wire and I chose the wire that had the greatest range.

Thickness of wire (mm) Voltage Current (amps) 0cm Current (amps) 1m Range of amps

0.15 0.7 0.14 0.5

0.75 0.5 0.17 0.78

0.457 0.8 0.1 0.67

0.55 0.8 0.44 0.45

Instead of choosing the wire with the largest range I am deciding to use all of them because they all have quite a large range and also they have an irregular pattern.

I think that I could improve this experiment by doing each measurement times and taking an average. I will do this in my next experiment.

An experiment to investigate how the electrical resistance of a wire changes in relationship to its length

Plan

ɨ Set up the experiment as shown in the diagram before.

ɨ Adjust dial until the voltmeter reads volts.

ɨ Record current on ammeter

ɨ Repeat the experiment with all four lengths of wire

I will take recordings at the following measurements

ɨ 0 cm

ɨ 40cm

ɨ 60cm

ɨ 80cm

ɨ 100cm/1m

I won't go any lower than 0cm because sometimes this can cause the overheating of the nichrome. I will need to use the following equation to find out the resistance of the wire against length

RESISITANCE = VOLTS

AMPS

R = V

I

Safety

ɨ Tie back hair- to ensure your hair does not cover your face and get in the way of the accurate readings and the experiment

ɨ Get the teacher to check your plan and that your experiment is safe and not set-up backwards therefore resulting in a small explosion.

ɨ Do not turn the power pack up high because the voltmeter and ammeter can only handle so much current going through them!

Method

I am going to set up my experiment like the diagram above and then record the results in the table below. I am going to try and keep all the possible factors the same except for the length of the wire.

100cm 1=0.46

=0.44

=0.45 0.45 4.44

This table shows the results of the resistance of the diameter of wire 0.55mm

I will now draw a graph of resistance against length for each graph. I will then try to incorporate the equation y = m x + c.

(See attached graph sheets)

Conclusion

I think that from my results I can safely say that my prediction was right. The resistance did change in proportion to the length. This is because as the length of the wire increased the electrons that made up the current, had to travel through more of the fixed particles in the wire causing more collisions and therefore a higher resistance.

Why is John F Kennedy such a Famous and Controversial Figure in History?

Famous- Celebrated in fame or public report; much talked about, renowned

Controversial- subject of controversy; questional; disputed

These are two of the best words to describe John Fitzgerald Kennedy, the 5th president of the USA. There are two sides to his story, one describing him as a famous american hero gunned down in his prime, the other is a corrupt world leader, an adulterer and a fraud. JFK was the first president of the media age, he was on television and constantly in the eyes of the public and would have to work hard to keep a good reputation.

Write my Essay on JFK - famous and controversial for me

JFK began life in a family already hand in hand with controversy. His father had run for president before and would have been set to be the first catholic president but wasnt voted in because of his links to the Nazi party in Germany. He had become rich due to bootlegging alcohol and had strong links to the mafia. This put JKF in an awkward position if the public found out about that his family had dealings with the mafia. Kennedy himself had allegedly paid the mafia to rig the election which put him into presidency. There was also a rumour about his family that they were all cursed. The Kennedy Curse was an apparent curse on the Kennedys meaning that they all died in suspicious circumstances. This was especially true in JFKs case.

America had undergone a change in the early 160s, the media age had begun. JFK had become the first president to be thrust into the media age and it suited him well. This helped him win the election over his republican, radio friendly opponent Richard Nixon. JFK was good with television interviews and this appealled to most of the american public. He became the first celebrity president through this and television cameras were always around the White House which was dubbed Camelot. This was not the only radical thing about Kennedys presidency, he was the first ever roman catholic president which was seen as revolutionary for some but was also frowned upon by alot of americans. They saw having a catholic president as wrong because it had become a tradition to have a protestant president. He was also the youngest ever president which drew headlines. JFK had a wife named Jacqueline Bouvier who added glamour to the White House. This was not enought for Kennedy though as he had an insatiable sexual appetite. He had many mistresses through the years, most famously the actress, Marilyn Manroe. JFK himself said that he had to have sex every day to keep himself satified.

When Kennedy was voted into the White House it was seen as a new era for america. He showed incredible energy and had a large set of radical new policies which appealled to some but shocked and appauled others. Passing new laws was always going to be a huge problem for JFK. He may have won the election but he won it in the closest election race ever. This may have given him a large amount of media attention but it also meant that he did not have the support of a substantial amount of the country to support him. In his domestic policies he raised huge contoversy by trying to introduce civil rights laws. Giving more rights to coloured was seemingly unheard of at that time and it sparked up a huge uprising against him within his own party. Most Americans were outraged by this and african americans felt that he was not doing enough for them. This was part of a new social policy designed to offer protection to the oldest and most vunerable memebers of american society. Another part of this policy was the welfare state. This was highly opposed as the american race tends to be individualistic. They did not want to pay extra taxes in order to fund other peoples welfare as well as their own. Kennedys foreign policy also went horribly wrong in the first year of his presidency. JFK sponsored several assassination attempts including the South Vietnamese leader Diem and Fidel Castro in Cuba. America saw Cuba as a communist threat that had to be eradicated. Kennedy tried to solve this problem by assassinating Fidel Castro. The CIA sponsored an invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs which was a failure, an embarressment and a bad start to JFKs presidency as his popularity was at an all time low.

The attempted assassinations of Fidel Casto were not Cubas only involvement in Americas foreign policy. America was in the middle of the Cold War and JFK found himself caught up in the most dangerous and dramaticevent of the war- the Cuban Missile Crisis. This was a conflict which could have resulted in mutually assured destruction. The Russians had were shipping nuclear missiles to Cuba, within firing distance of every city in America. JFK had to stand strong and not back down to the Russians to gain popularity. The Russian leader, Khruschev turned his ships around and headed back to Russia after Kennedy had not backed down for 1 days in which the slightest sign of aggression could have caused nuclear holocaust. Kennedys popularity shot up as Americans believed that the Russians had backed down to him. The truth was that Kennedy had withdrawn all American missiles from within firing distance of Russia in Grece and Turkey so Russia did not put missiles within firing distance of America.

On November nd 16 John Fitzgerald Kennedy was made infinitly famous on the streets of Dallas, Texas. While on a tour of Texas he was shot dead in his car. His assassin was never discovered although it was thought to be Lee Harvey Oswald who shot himself when he was being arrested. There are hundreds of conspiracy theories of who shot JFK and why. Many fingers point to the CIA who may have seen the president as a threat after he allegidly slept with a spy on one of his many flings and they generally saw him as a liability. Another story is the white Americans who found Kennedy giving coloured people rights as offencive. The military may have feared him pulling out of Vietnam despite the fact he wanted to continue, fundamentalist protestants, cuban exiles, the mafia, the list goes on. Nothing JFK did paralleled how much fame he got after that fateful day in Dallas. John Fitzgerald Kennedy had done many good things in his short term as president but it was what made him controversial which got him assassinated in essentially made him infinatly famous.

The debate on coffee is an age old one, which has been occurring now for centuries. Pope Clements VIII was asked by the Roman Clergy to ban coffee because it was the 'Devil's Drink' in 1600. Fortunately, the Pope enjoyed it so much that he blessed it, and converted it to a Christian beverage.(Hons, caffeine) Caffeine in its multiple forms, is the only drug that is distributed freely across the world. While many people link caffeine with a multitude of health risks including Osteoporosis, heart arrhythmia, as well as several others. In moderation there are no studies which have as of yet which prove these accusation to have any factual evidence, actually the opposite is proving to be true. While many people steer away from caffeine because of the belief in its addictive nature, coffee drinkers, do not require increasing amounts of caffeine over prolonged periods of time (which is the characteristic of an addictive substance), they can also moderate or change there consumption with little difficulty. The actual description of "Addiction is a strong dependence on a drug characterized by three elements 1) severe withdrawal symptoms; ) tolerance to a given dose, or the need for more and more of the substance; and ) the loss of control, or the need to consume the substance at all costs. Addicts may exhibit anti-social behavior or even commit crimes to perpetuate the abuse."(Leviton, Coffee and Health) Evidence shows that coffee drinkers do not exhibit these symptoms of addiction. Which proves that by definition caffeine is shown to be a non-addictive substance.

How Caffeine works

Caffeine, medically known as trimethylxanthine, is a cardiac stimulant as well as a mild diuretic. It operates using the same mechanisms as amphetamines; cocaine and heroine do to affect the brain, although it does so on a more mild level. In side the body caffeine, to a nerve cell appears to be the same as adenosine, and is able to bind to the adenosine receptor. Yet, although adenosine slows down the cell's activity, caffeine blocks the receptors and speeds up the cell. It also causes the brain's blood vessels to constrict as it also blocks the adenosine's ability to open them. This block causes an increased firing of the neurons within the brain, the pituitary gland notices this activity and interprets the information as the occurrence of an emergency. It then releases hormones which tell the adrenal glands to produce adrenaline (epinephrine), this then causes the following effects on the body dilated pupils, opening of the breathing tubes, increased heart rate, blood vessels on the surface constricting to slow blood flow while increasing the blood flow to the muscles.(unknown, How Stuff Works)

Order custom research paper on Effects of Caffiene

Caffeine also increases dopamine levels in the same way that amphetamines do (heroine and cocaine also manipulate dopamine levels by slowing down the rate of dopamine re-uptake). Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that, in certain parts of the brain, activates the pleasure center.(unknown, How Stuff Works)

Advantages and Disadvantages

While caffeine can have both advantage's and disadvantages on the body the primary effect is giving your mind and body a short burst of energy, too much caffeine can be harmful causing fever, confusion, muscle twitching and difficulty sleeping. Aside from the extremely rare overdose however, the effects of caffeine can be fairly beneficial. Recent studies on mice, show that skin lotion containing caffeine can actually reduce the number of cancer tumors from 50 70%, Dr. Allan Conney, a professor specializing in cancer research at Rutgers University found that it can remarkably kill any abnormal skin cells, while keeping normal ones intact.(Leviton, Coffee and Health)

Another Study done by Dr. G. Webster Ross at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Honolulu, found that men who drank 8 ounces of coffee or more per day were 50-80% less likely to develop Parkinson's disease then those who drank no coffee. These results however are only based on Japanese-American men and as of yet it is inconclusive weather ethnicity affected the results.(Hons,Caffeine)

Another advantage of caffeine from the American Medical Association is that men who drink - cups of regular coffee daily, have a 40% less chance of developing gallstones than those who do not drink coffee. Gallstones are lumps of cholesterol in the gallbladder caused by consumption of both heavy and fatty foods. Caffeine protects against these by using stored fat to increase the energy output. It also can absorb the fluid that causes gallstones, increasing the flow of bile through the gallbladder.(Hons, Caffeine) Studies are constantly being done all over the world to discover whether caffeine can protect against similar effects on any other parts of the body.

Caffeine and Exercise Performance

Caffeine can improve both high intensity and endurance in exercise performance, while not produced by the body it is considered to be a nutritional ergogenic aid because it is a natural constituent of several common beverages, especially coffee. In relatively small amounts taken before exercise, caffeine can improve performance in both intense effort and in endurance. This is due to the adrenaline released and the subsequent stimulation of lipolysis in the adipose tissue, increasing the free fatty acid supply to the muscles, sparing muscle glycogen and delaying the point of muscle fatigue. Caffeine is so effective in this form that while it is not banned by the International Olympic Committee its use is regulated and a drug test in which an athlete has a concentration of caffeine exceeding 1 mg/l is considered to have committed a doping offense.(Gleeson, Sports Nutrition)

Anthropologists believe that some cultures began to ingest caffeine-containing plants as early as the Stone Age, in approximately 1100CE, the first coffee plants are suspected to have been planted on the Arabian Peninsula. It was here where it was given the name coffee, coming from the word "qahwa" which means that which prevents sleep.(unknown, How Stuff Works) By 176, the city of Venice contained over 00 coffee shops and today the coffee industry is a multimillion dollar industry. The United States alone consume over one-fifth of the worlds coffee which is equal to 45 million pounds per year. With this amount of caffeine consumed in the world today, there are more then 1,000 scientific studies to date conducted on caffeine, effects according to the National Library of Medicine and it is still "Generally Recognized as Safe."(Hons,Caffeine)

Chinua Achebe's, Things Fall Apart, is a story of an ambitious, determined man, Okonkwo trying to keep his culture alive while the Christian missionaries try to destroy it. Okonkwo works hard as a young man so that he will not end up as his father, Unoka, who had no titles and who was buried in the evil forest with nothing but the debt he owed. But Okonkwo pushes on and becomes an important man in his village. To his astonishment his oldest son Nwoye begins to show many of the same characteristics of Okonkwos father. The relationship between the two was not good and would eventually end in the two never speaking again. Okonkwo sees Unoka and Nwoye both as failures but Okonkwo himself is a failure from being exiled, to coming back to his land and not being able to make a difference, and then finally his final destruction.

" Okonkwo's gun had exploded and a piece of iron pierced the boy's heart" (Achebe 14). The exile begins. It happened so quickly, without any thought. Okonkwo did not set out purposely to kill the boy but it happened. It was a crime against the earth goddess to kill a clansman and Okonkwo's only choice was to flee his village. His family and him would have to leave their home and go to a distant land to live for seven years. After the seven years are up then his family would be allowed to return to their village. Everything Okonkwo had worked hard to build was destroyed. His compound and his barns were burned and even his animals were killed. All of his titles were lost. He was nothing.

All of the years of hard work and Okonkwo had nothing to show for it. Years of him swearing that he would never end up like his father and he was beginning to become more like him little by little. His father had died with no titles and now Okonkwo himself who held many prestigious titles before had none and was stuck in his motherland, Mbanta to start all over again. He had to build a compound for his family and himself and begin preparing the farm for the coming planting season. But work for Okonkwo was not the same. He did not have the passion he once had to work and when there was no work to do he stayed around silent and to himself. With help from his kinsman Okonkwo was able to push the years along and actually establish himself in Mbanta. But as the sun begins to shine just a little in Okonkwos life the hurricane moves back in.

Just as the seven years were ending Okonkwo and Nwoye have a showdown. With the Christian missionaries moving in on all the villages many began leaving the traditional culture and converting to Christianity. Christianity had caught Nwoye's eyes from the beginning but he hid it from fear of his father. Then one-day word was out that Nwoye had converted to Christianity and Okonkwo was not happy. When Nwoye returned home that day Okonkwo began to beat him but Nwoye got away and never returned. To Okonkwo Nwoye did not exist anymore.

The seven years were done and Okonkwo began to return to his village. He was returning with whatever salvage name he still had there, a compound and farm a friend of his put together for him, and most important he was returning a son short. Just as Okonkwo's life was falling apart so was his village. When he returned home it was not the same home that he had left. The missionaries had moved in there and had built churches. There was also a government established. Okonkwo did not like how his people allowed the white men to come into the village and take it over without a fight. When he voiced his opinion on the situation, many seem not to care because they had brought other perks, such as a trading post.

Okonkwo felt his people were acting like cowards and felt ashamed. He knew if he had never become exiled then his people would not be acting like this. If he had stayed in his village and continued to earn titles then they would have kicked the white men out along time ago and never allowed them to become established. His village was not the same and every day it was making him more angry and uncontrollable.

" The clan which had turned false on him appeared to be making amends"(1). A spirit was unmasked at the market during a celebration for the earth goddess and many believed the white man had gone too far. Okonkwo along with some other men went to the church and burnt it to the ground. Okonkwo felt a sense of satisfaction. But again the sun would not shine for long. Six great men from the village including Okonkwo were invited to meet with the commissioner in order to solve issues between the Christians and the clansman. Or that is what the men had thought but they were tricked and taken into custody until there fine of two hundred cowries was paid. By the time it hit the village the fine was two hundred and fifty cowries. The messengers had added on their own fee.

The hurricane in Okonkwos life continued because he knew in his heart that his village would never go to war with the white men. After the men were released and settle down from the commotion, a meeting was thrown in the market trying to plan out what to do next. As the meeting began court messengers approached and Okonkwo sprang to his feet. Without and questions or words he drew out his machete and took the head messengers head off. No one knew what to say. No one knew why he had done it either.

The hurricane had stopped and the sun was not exactly shining. Okonkwo knew no war was to come. His people had given up on being fearless leaders and now ran around as women. The only option left for him was death and that was the route he took. He did not die fighting the war on his own as he had preached previously to his friend. He died an outcast like his father to be buried in the evil forest. Killing of oneself is against their religion and customs and it not looked highly upon. So anyone who kills himself or herself will not get a proper burial and will be thrown with the outcasts into the evil forest.

Okonkwo always judges everyone but never took the time to look at himself. He believed his father to be a failure but his father lived a happy life and enjoyed the choices he made and continued to do whatever he wanted to do, regardless of what others might of thought of him. Nwoye as well is living a better life. He goes to school and can now read and write and make a better future for himself. Okonkwo proves himself as a failure by being exiled from his clan, having to start a new life with a new clan, coming back and his clan being different from when he left, not being able to kick the white men out, and then finally going against traditions which he whole heartedly believed in and took his own life. Okonkwo is the true failure.

The Travellers Story

The dark, vast expanse of the moon and starlit sky stretched ever onward with its ageless grace. Nothing stirred in its vastness apart from one, small outline against the backdrop of the stars behind it. None of the various nocturnal creatures, going about their nightly business noticed the small shape moving through the sky, all that is, except for one. A traveller, moving through the forests below had speid the bird. The small creature had followed him for many miles of his great journey and had not gone unnoticed from his ever-alerted gaze. There was an expression of great urgency etched into the travellers weather-worn face as he treaded onward through the mist-ridden pine forests. Stretching out above the forest canope were several hills from which small lights could be seen, these warm and welcoming lights were a sure sign of civilisation in even these, the most remote of areas.

As the dwindling hours of the night drew to a close, the traveller scurreid away from the beaten track and into the safe seclusion and envelopment of some nearby bushes. The first rays of the dawn were breaking and it was time for a respite from the physical pains of life.

Tell them, tell them the voice rang out before him as he opened his eyes and arose to his feet. He was no longer nestled in the bushel within the forest. looking around now, he found himself surrounded by visions hell itself. Large, grin jawed daemonic beings tortured, maimed and slaughtered all of the men, women and children alike that he saw about him. Their palpable screams of agony resounded off the tall, Granite spires and walls that encompassed the land around them. Tell them, tell them the voice rang out again, though noticably more shrill than before, and in front of the travellers very eyes appeared a knight, clad in brilliant shining mail,a golden crown atop his head and a white cape around his shoulders. this has happened before the knight proclaimed, a sorrofull tone ever present in his voice. A great toll of blood was paid before their banishment finally came, u know of what i speak traveller, it has been foretold, and you must warn them, warn them so that this cannot happen again. Indeed the traveller understood all too well. After all this was not the first time that this had happened to him. The dream had occured many times before and he knew exactly what was to be done. The warnings of the past were reiterated as before. Like always, his nightmare finally departed with the same message do not let any who stand in your way live, you must not be stopped. Finally it ended, allowing him into the peaceful sleep that he so craved.

Awakening with a start, his eyes came into focus and he glanced upwards towards the sun, it was setting, he had slept here for too long. quickly, he rose to his feet and began walking back to the road, the traveller quickly became aware that there were more than his own feet travelling the dust sewn path. Torches in the distance, and shouting. Turning to face the approaching people, he started chanting incantations, drawing runes and cutting strange, twisting shapes into his skin with the knife drawn from its sheath on his hip. These wards would be needed if he were to survive the following moments. Deep inside, the knowledge of what was about to happen haunted him. There he his shouted one voice from amongst the crowd of people that was now fast approaching, hes the one responsible for all this another cried,Kill him many shouted.Hold your ground traveller a dark haired man creid. The ringleader of the mob had pushed his way to the head of the group, and was now standing a matter of feet away from the strange hooded pirgrim. Everyone fell silent in the group as the dark haired man now spoke.Traveller, you came to our town, stopping quickly for supplies four nights before last. There was a short pause while he composed himself and continued, since you stopped there, four people have died of strange illness, never seen by any in this area before. Many of our cattle were found slaughtered, strange, pus filled wounds covering their bloated bodies. Finally, all of the grain in our storehouses appears to have been poisoned. A few people began to jeer and raise brandished weapons, but were quickly stopped and quietened. Therefor, he began we charge you with the crime of murder, as no other can be held responsible for these acts, it is my duty as local magistrate to sentence you to death. Enforcement of these, your crimes, will be done quickly and righteously. Everybody waited quietly, waiting, waiting for the strangers respnse to his charge. I will say only these words lifting his hood back, an evil smile formed on his face. A few people began shouting again, be silent, all of you, i have not gone through so many visions of hell to bandy creed words with witless worms. They hushed, strangely finding themselves unable to reply although nobody knew why. I have seen the many wonders of this world, i have seen the tallest of mountains, the greatest oceans and the farthest reaches of men, and although it pains me, i have also forseen each and every one of your deaths. You cannot be allowed to stop me. the crowd were amazed. How could he dare show insolence in the face of such adversity ?. A few people began to realize something was wrong. somethings in the woods a person towards the back shouted. As people looked around they could see them, eyes, glinting in the fading light of the sun, a breif sight of fur rushing by and the flash of snarling teeth. Everybody forgot about trying to attack the strange traveller, instead beginning to panic and run away, but it was too late, as the plague wolves leapt upon their quarry with savage ferocity, the traveller knew that none of them would escape.

Several hours had passed, the wolves had dragged the bodeis of their victims away, the traveller stood looking at the carnage he had caused. It had to be like this he reminded himself,The darkness that has reached these lands would have claimed them anyway, and i must not be stopped in my task, it is for the greater good of this world that i do it. A whinneying in the distance drew his attention away from the scene. The huge black hoarse rode toward him, stopping by his side. It was riderless, a sure sign that they had sent it for him. After mounting the creature and departing, he speid the raven flying overhead. Why was it following him ?, the traveller was sure he would find out. As the sun set, he turned left away from the main road and up a hill. He was drawing nearer to his goal...

Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

"FAS stand for Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. FAS, a disorder characterized by growth retardation, facial abnormalies, and central nervous system dysfunction (CNS), is caused by woman's use of alcohol during pregnancy" (FAQS, 00). Several studies have found that women, who drink while being pregnant, put their developing fetus at risk of birth defects and spontaneous abortion (FAS, 00). When a pregnant woman drinks alcohol, it passes easily through the placenta to her fetus. The alcohol interferes with the ability of the fetus to received oxygen and nourishment for normal cell development(FAS, 14). "The U.S Public Heath Service has indicated that there is no safe level of alcohol use during pregnancy. All drinks containing alcohol can hurt an unborn baby. A standard 1-ounce can of beer has the same amount of alcohol as a 4-ounce glass of wine"

(Wegmann). The effects of alcohol on a fetus vary, depending on the amount and frequency of the pregnant woman's drinking and the fetus stage of development. The mother's age, time drinking, and food ingested with the alcohol all affect the amount passed to the baby (MSN Health). Babies affected by alcohol can have some or all of the clinical signs of " Fetal Alcohol Syndrome". Children prenatally exposed to alcohol can suffer from mental retardation, physical and behavioral problems.

Most importantly, children exposed to high amounts of alcohol during pregnancy are most likely to be born with mental retardation. As the fetus develops, cells move from one part of the brain to another in pattern. If this migration is interrupted these cells may not grow or function in a properly manner and it can lead to brain damage. Recently, researchers analyzed in more detail the size of the brain in children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and found that they had been born with reduced brain size and displaced nerves. The most affected areas in the brain are the following The "Corpus Callosum". Abnormalities have been linked to deficits in attention, intellectual functioning, reading, learning, and verbal memory. People who have been exposed to alcohol parentally may exhibit impairments on their performances such as the ability to plan and achieve a goal. People exposed to alcohol prenatally, lack of imagination and curiosity, does not understand concepts such as time and money, and have poor language comprehension. Also, the "Hippocampus" is affected causing loss of the ability to store new memories. For example, they cannot remember a doctors appointment. Another area of the brain that is affected by prenatal alcohol exposure is the Cerebellum, which is involved with balance and coordination. People with mental retardation cannot solve problems accurately, and cannot generate rapid responses throughout the entire life. In addition, studies describe children with FAS to perform poorly at all assigned duties (Mattson).

Moreover, children prenatally exposed to alcohol can be born with major birth defects. Exposure during the first trimester damages the facial features, and is born with growth retardation. Birth defects of alcohol exposure can occur in the first to 8 weeks of pregnancy before the woman even knows she is pregnant (FAS, 00). The facial abnormalities are the most common characteristics of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. About 50% of children with FAS have physical deformities such as small eye openings, alterations in nose, an absent of elongated groove between the upper lip and nose, flattened midface, and underdevelopment of the upper or lower jaw. Likewise, prenatal alcohol exposure affects growth at follow up. Studies have found that growth deficits are maintained as the children get older, and it is associated with decreased in birth weight and height. Children with FAS are small for their age (Larkby). As the baby grows and develops, some abnormalities may become apparent. However, some symptoms may be attributed to other condition (MSN Health).

As a result, about 80% of people with FAS commonly exhibit behavioral problems (MSN health). These problems can include poor concentration and attention. Children with FAS cannot live independently because they cannot overcome in life as an adult (Larkby). In addition, children with FAS exhibit higher rate problems; they also demonstrate poor socialization and communication skills because they have antisocial behavior. Behavioral problems can vary depending on the amount of alcohol drinks consumed during pregnancy. In one study, 4-year-old children whose mothers drank one to five drinks per day during pregnancy were less attentive and more active when observed at home, compared with children of control mothers who drank less. At age 7 1/, the children were less attentive and took a longer time to react to a stimulus on a Continuous Performance Task (Larkby). As the affected child gets older is at risk for failure in school because of attention problems. Also, as a teen or adult, he or she is at risk for inappropriate sexual behavior, and substance abuse. In addition, people with FAS tend to have legal problems such as cheating, lying, and stealing (Larkby).

In summary, " Fetal Alcohol Syndrome" is an irreversible life long condition that affects every aspect of a child's life and the life of his or her surroundings. However, FAS is the only birth defect that can be prevented

(FAQS, 00). Unfortunately, women sometimes wait until they confirmed the pregnancy to stop drinking. By then it is too late, the embryo has gone to through several weeks of critical development, a period which exposure to LaterWork Cited

Dead men do tell tales, by William R. Maples, PH.D and Michael Browning, a book about dead men who can still talk to us. This book consists of pages and 16 chapters. This book contains strange and fascinating cases of forensic anthropology. Dr. Maples is a forensic anthropologist who discusses repulsive and mined boggling tales of the world of forensic anthropology. Also, Dr. Maples will describe his intriguing career and up lifting moments of his life.

The first chapter of the book is simply titled, "Every day is Halloween." Dr. Maples begins to describe his seldom nightmares. In his description, he says that he sees "crushed and perforated skulls, lopped-off limbs and severed heads, roasted and dissolving corpses, hanks of human hair and heaps of write bones, all in a day's work at my office". Later on in the chapter Dr. Maples begins to explain how he was first introduced to the world of anthropology. Dr. Maples was a freshmen at the University of Texas. His first goal was to register for the class introduction to biology, unfortunately the class was filled up. His advisor suggested anthropology, and a combination of good luck and bad character he began his career in anthropology. Towards the end of the chapter we hear about Tom Mckern. Mr. Mckern taught his physical anthropology class. He later describes Mckern as a unique born teacher, brilliant lecturer and a charismatic person. He deeply admires Mr. Mckern as an anthropologist.

One month before he accepted his B.A. in 15 he married a girl by the name of Margaret. During his time at the University of Texas he began a job hunt. He undertook many jobs like working at the morgue or his time spent in Africa studying baboons. He said working in Africa is an unforgettable experience due to some good things and bad things. While, in Africa, Dr. Maples got malaria twice not only that he had to face angry Masai tribesmen carrying spears and escaping from charging Cape buffalo. The good news is that he learned a whole lot, developed his relationship with his wife and in Kenya his two glorious daughters were born.

The next chapter is titled "Talkative Skulls". Immediately Dr. Maples describes his feelings towards the television show "Quincy". He say's "Quincy has caused me no end of vexation and amusement." The reason behind this is because he hates it when people call him Quincy. And he says that, he is not Quincy because I am a forensic anthropologist and he is a forensic pathologist. His field of expertise is the human skeleton. In 17, Dr. Maples got his first case. The police asked him and three archaeologists to investigate. But, in the end the whole case was a fiasco, a false alarm. Eventually, he took on more cases through out the years. He describes how anthropology and crime investigation, work very well together. In a unique case, he analyzes a fragment given to him by state attorney's which turns out to be a skull fragment of an adult white female. Later developments showed that the woman was murdered with a carpenter's hatchet.

Write my Essay on Dead men do tell tales

Chapter three is titled "Bolts of Bones". This chapter explains what happens to a dead body. I thought this chapter was incredibly nauseating but on the odd side interesting. Dr. Maples talks a whole lot about dead bodies. He gives us a tour of his office and work place. He then describes in detail what goes on in the laboratories. Certainly, he starts to explain the horrific reek of corpses and the decay process of the dead bodies.

The next chapter "The Enfolding Earth" Dr. Maples gives descriptive information about cute little maggots. He says that maggots are tough, resourceful creatures. He has seen many bodies that are filled with maggots inside hopping around. He then provides information about different burial techniques. The next chapter "Flotsam and Jetsam" Dr. Maples explains what he does in certain situation like dismemberment cases. He tries to put himself at the crime scene, then imagines himself in the same situations as the victims, in order for him to understand what happened.

"When the Sickness is your Soul" Mr. Maples begins to show his feelings towards suicide. He said that suicide is like a deadly disease. He tells some stories that he encountered in his early days. There was this one story that I couldn't believe. An attorney shot himself five times with a .8 magnum and when the police got there he was still alive, able to move his eyes and comprehend responses given to him. It' really sad when you think about suicide. People are so lost and the only answer they can come up with is to take there on life. "Outpacing the Fiend" is the next chapter in the book. Dr. Maples tries to elaborate the sciences of forensic anthropology. He tells us how it was developed and put into play. He explains the importance of the matter and how it can benefit us. The following chapter "unnatural nature" is an explanation of the skeletal system. I was really interested in this chapter because it taught me the difference between male and female skeletal systems. Also the chapter spoke of, aging bones and how are bones are ever growing process.

The following chapters are filled with information but I started to get a little bored. Dr. Maples started to talk about his encounters with Vietnam soldiers. He explained how they had to use dental records to identify bodies that were severely damaged. Reading about dental records, reminded me how I learned about dental records and formulas in class, it was kind of a like a review. Dr. Maples then gives a big history lecture in the following chapters. He talks about the assassination of Tsar Nicholas and his family. Dr. Maples presents dental records to prove the identification of the family. In the last chapter "These Rough Notes and Our Dead Bodies" Dr. Maples begins to show his side of honor and courage. He makes his key point that bones will always tell a story and for a forensic anthropologist is, "to catch their mute cries and whispers, and to interpret them for the living, as long as I am able".

"Dead Men do Tell Tales" is an exceptional book. It was full of information about forensic anthropology. Dr. Maples made the book very interesting to read. He was direct with his explanations which help me better understand his thoughts and experiences. Dr. Maples is a man that has great knowledge of his field. When I started to read the material, I realized that I needed to give great admiration to people like Dr. Maples. I believe that one has to be very tough and intelligent in order to be in this type of profession. Ultimately, I don't really enjoy doing book reports but in this case I didn't mind at all.

Okay, some years ago I was staying at my grandmother's house for the weekend because my parents were going out of town to Newark for a friendly visit with their homosexual friends. They usually take me, but I really didn't want to be around gay guys who conversed openly with others about their sexual habits. It's just not polite, y'know? Anyway, I'm stayin' at granny's house -- And let me tell you Her house was horrible. It had that old people smell, It had ugly furniture with the plastic on it, the floor model TV in the living room didn't work, and the little black and white TV on top ONLY worked when my grandmother's soap operas were on. Since it's the weekend, that means the little idiot box didn't work at all. Worst of all was my crackhead uncle, Tryna, who lived there because he couldn't be trusted. I mean his name is Tryna because he's always Tryna get over on somebody. My granny only let him stay there until he got his life together sounds like a long term deal.

OK, I get over there Friday night. No problems or anything. I just couldn't sleep at first cuz of the geriatric odor emanating throughout the house. My grandmother isn't even that old- She's like a hundred and fifty years younger than the United States, so there isn't really any reason for her to be smelling like day old trash, Right? Well, I fell asleep after a waft of granny's crack-addicted son's feet tickled the inside of my nose. Did I say, "fell"? I meant to say, "painstakingly made Myself GO" to sleep. So Friday was NO problem at all... Saturday is another story altogether.

I get up early because I'm a kid. You know-- the all day cartoons and such. I love it. So I gets up at 7 a.m. which is the proper start time for Saturday marathons. Then I remember the Stupid television doesn't work right on the weekend. So I call a friend of mine to Describe all the crummily delicious shows that were on at the time. Too bad my friend was about as dumb as a pile of dust. He was describing things wrong in the cartoons and starting over. He was also lying about some episodes of Bugs Bunny. I mean C'mon! When has Bugs ever REALLY been shot in the stomach with Elmer Fudd's Shotgun? My friend even went so far as to say Sylvester Caught Tweety, Roasted him alive, and devoured him with a bottle of Open Pit Barbecue Sauce. My friend's Veracity was non-existent. So I got off the phone with him. Besides, he was dumb as a pile of dust. The rest of the day went like this Boredom. Period. Nothing to do. AT ALL.

07 A.M Crackman Tryna is Tryna get me to go to Walgreens with him so he can get some laundry detergent to wash his clothes with since he has an interview with McDonald's on Monday. "Why can't we go tomorrow during the day? Or better yet You go by yourself right now?"--"I need an extra set of hands for these bags"--"grow an extra set". I didn't like Tryna, and he knows I don't like him. My grandmother comes in and asks me to do it as a favor to her. I love my grandmother. Anything she asks from me, I'll do. Cuz, Y'know she might die or somethin'. So I walk to Walgreens with this man, by the way- it's winter outside; with snow and all that good stuff. So I have on my big winter coat and stuff and my uncle, Crackman, won't shut up talkin' to me- tellin' me about how bad he had it as a child and how he killed people for stuff and how If he could lick that little crack habit, he'd be ceo of McDonald's. Whatever. So we get to Walgreens and there is this Squad car outside with this big German shepherd in the back barking it's head off. we get into Walgreens and Tryna buys one box of Gain soap powder and several bars of soap. I say, "don't you think you need to get MORE soap? you may want to take more than one bath." Tryna Was a dirty man, but anyway, everything fit in one bag, so i'm wonderin', "what the hell am I doin' here?" Cruel Fate soon let me know that reason...

It's around 415 in the morning. Crackman hasn't Stopped talking yet. I put my hands inside my sleeves because I was freezing. Lucky thing too, cuz within the next minute, my coat sleeve was ripped off. We turn around and there's a rottweiler. At least I Thought it was a Rottweiler because it had a swastika on its butt and kept calling me "Herr Dinner". I backed up because I thought maybe the Rott would eat my uncle, but the dog made it quite apparent it wanted me. I must've been the feathers that flew from the arm socket of my coat that made the dog think theres a big chicken or something living within my Eddie Bauer. I'm running around in circles and the dog is chipping away my coat; feathers are mixing with snow, foot prints mixing with paw prints, and shrieks of terror are mixing with holiday cheer. I'm all in the streets and halfway on the sidewalk. My uncle is on top of a phone booth throwing soap bars at the dog and asking him why is he attacking his nephew... ASKING THE DOG WHY IS HE ATTACKING ME... That's why I say no to drugs...I see a fence and I hop over it... kinda. I get halfway over and the dog bites my pants leg and tries to pull me back on his side of town. NO THANKS! I pull the gate and swing over. I'm just hoping against hope that the damn dog can't just jump this short fence. He's standing there barking and looking all malicious. My uncle's still on the AT&T phone across the street. I suggest to him that he should go and get the police that was at Walgreens to help us out. He tells me "hell no! i'm afraid of dawgs." OKAAAAY. Well, I'm out here freezing cuz my coat is tattered and battered and chewed up. After a while my uncle decided that he Should go and get the cops cuz I was going to get frost bite waiting for this dog to leave. BIG MISTAKE. As soon as he got down, the dog rushed him. Poor Tryna got it worst than I did for two reasons 1. He fell and . Another Rottweiler came. I figured he was dead, so I jumped the fence and ran to my Granny's house. I tell her that Tryna was dead and that I was tired and wanted to go to sleep. She's standing there SHOCKED while I'm casually putting on my Pajamas. She asked me what happened and I told her two dogs ate him alive. She asked me where and I said outside of Walgreens. She asked me when and I told her to pick any time she wanted to cuz I have no watch.

Tryna gets home about four hours later and says he just came from the hospital and that some nice man beat the dogs off with a bat. Did Tryna go to the hospital because of the dogs? No, the man accidentally breaks Tryna's wrist while swinging the bat. I bet the man was on drugs too... Tryna said the dogs barks were worst than their bites. Yeah right, Poor Tryna died a few months later of Rabies... Moral of the Story? Don't Do Drugs.
