Citizen Kane

Citizen Kane begins with a long shot of Xanadu the private estate of one of the world's richest men, Charles Foster Kane. In the middle of the estate is a castle. Kane is seen examining a winter scene within a crystal ball. As he drops it, it smashes, and one word is heard - Rosebud. What follows are pieces of newsreel footage detailing how Kane amassed his fortune, and how this fortune affected his life and character. Kane is taken from his mother as a boy and made the ward of Thatcher, a rich industrialist. The result is that every significant or self-destructive move he had made during his life ultimately appears to be a reaction to that deeply wounding event . For example, Kane manipulates the life of his second wife, Susan, over-estimating her singing ability in the Enquirer.

It is learned later in the film that Kane's final cryptic utterance "Rosebud" was written on a sled used during his childhood. This sled was used by Kane shortly before his mother allowed him to be taken away by Thatcher an event which marks the beginning of his corrupted life. Kane's last words illustrate his distraught due to his lost innocence. As he became rich, he progressively became more corrupt. A very important thematic concept of the film, as well as a classic situation which has always affected society, involves the many negative effects wealth and power can have on an individual. Kane says himself, "You know, Mr. Bernstein, if I hadnt been very rich, I might have been a really great man."

Perhaps the most significant aspect of Citizen Kane is the manner in which Orson Welles interlinks film technique with key ideas. Welles revolutionized areas of film technique such as lighting, viewpoints, and music, among many others. For example, Kane's face is shadowed as he signs his "Declaration of Principles" prior to printing it in his newly-organized newspaper. An idealistic Kane is depicted here; his principles have to do with printing the truth. Yet, these principles are immediately and essentially overshadowed. An example of Welles' use of viewpoints includes the angle at which Susan's room is shot, symbolizing Susan's turmoil and unhappiness. Welles' choice of music during the scene in which Susan sings helps to define Susan's character. Bernard Herman forced the soprano to sign above range to make Susan sound weak. Welles' techniques are consistently and adequately used.
